This week's Say Yes to Holiness podcast 1:1 Conversation is with Jesse Weiler, Host of The Liturgy Guys podcast. The conversation between Jesse and I ran the length and breadth and height and depth of topics concerning the liturgy. Everything from what parts of the Mass we should be singing, to books and online courses we can use to grow in our appreciation and understanding of the Mass to how he ended up being a host of a podcast about the liturgy was all part of our fast paced and enjoyable conversation. The Liturgy Guys podcast is an initiative of the Liturgical Institute, Adoremus Bulletin, and Benedictine College. Christopher Carstens and Dr. Denis McNamara sit down with host Jesse Weiler every week to talk about Catholic Liturgy. At the end of each episode our Liturgy experts take time to answer listener submitted questions. The goal of this podcast is to share the treasures of Liturgy with English speaking Catholics all over the world. Jesse also serves as the Director of The Liturgical Institute, so we spent some time talking about the mission of the Institute that was established in the year 2000 by His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, in order to prepare Catholics for a “new era in liturgical renewal.” It serves a diverse international student population of laity, religious and clergy. Monsignor M. Francis Mannion served as its founding Director, and established the sacramental foundation for the program that it enjoys today. The Liturgical Institute prepares its students in a context of prayer and scholarship with the Church's future priests, deacons, pastors and ministers to bring solid theological knowledge, critical reasoning and practical skills to bear on the challenges opened by the exciting phase of liturgical renewal emerging in recent years. I pray that this conversation with Jesse helps encourage you to continue to do WHATEVER IT TAKES so as to increase your active, full and conscious participation in the Mass and bring greater glory to God. In Episode 16, Bishop Richard speaks with Fr. Don Richardson, Dean of St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. They discuss Church Architecture and Fr Don's new book, Beauty and Light with Faith. Fr Don Richardson has been Dean of St Mary's Cathedral since 2016, but his association with the cathedral goes back further. He regards St Mary's as his spiritual home, a sanctuary where people are given a glimpse of the divine even in the midst of life's worldly cares. As a young working man Fr Richardson worshipped regularly at St Mary's. He became an acolyte there, and in 1985 he worked full-time as the sacristan. It was then that he began to make notes on the cathedral's stained glass windows. A trip to see the great cathedrals of Britain, and his seminary studies from 1986, helped enrich his appreciation for St Mary's. For several years each January, during the seminary summer breaks, he returned to the cathedral to conduct daily guided tours. Ordained a priest in St Mary's in 1992, Fr Richardson went on to serve successively in the Sydney parishes of Mount Pritchard and Menai. Then, appointed Assistant Priest at the cathedral by Cardinal Clancy in 1997, he remained there until the end of 2003. Fr Richardson subsequently took up the pastoral care of the parish of Dulwich Hill until, in 2009, Cardinal Pell asked him to do postgraduate studies at the Liturgical Institute at Mundelein, near Chicago, in the United States. This study further deepened his appreciation of how the cathedral's stained glass windows can draw people towards God. Fr Richardson returned to Sydney in 2010 to serve as Parish Priest of Woollahra and as Director of the Archdiocesan Liturgy Office, and he remained at Woollahra until his appointment back to the cathedral as Administrator and Dean by Archbishop Fisher in 2016. He thinks he has the best job in the whole Australian Church.

Welcome to episode 83, In this episode, I have the honor of interviewing Deacon Taylor Tracy. He is a deacon within the Progressive Catholic Church and, after years of formation with many unexpected and exciting turns, he is slated to be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, February 13, 2021. Deacon Taylor’s love for ministry began at an early age when he began to sing in his church choir at the age of ten. By the time he was twelve, he was composing and conducting ensembles in his community, and by thirteen, he was hired as a church music director. Since that time fourteen years later, he has served as the director of music at churches ranging in size from 60 to 600. In addition to music ministry, he served as the director of divine worship and community at St. Paul University Parish, where weekly attendance grew from 600 to 2,000. His time at St. Paul's was a turning point; he got to see what "healthy" ministry really looks like; he led a staff of twelve and learned far more from them than they probably did from him. He continued his journey by serving as the executive director of a non-profit which served students in some of Wichita's most impoverished neighborhoods. He then moved to Kansas City with his fiancé, where he served in two United Methodist churches as director of music and youth and as the church administrator in another parish simultaneously. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the North Kansas City Symphony Orchestra and has previously served with the National Association of Pastoral Musicians' local chapter. He is also the founding artistic conductor of the sixty-voice chorus, United in Voice, a group composed of nine denominations and counting with an emphasis on celebrating traditional sacred music. In addition to countless hours of church leadership and formation seminars, Deacon Taylor has studied at Wichita State University in music education, at Newman University in theology and philosophy, The Liturgical Institute, and the Sancta Sophia Academy for Clergy Formation in the Progressive Catholic Church, under the direction and mentorship of Bishops Robert Chung and Dr. Marc Morales Del Castillo. Deacon Taylor Tracy is the founding pastor and lead planter for Christ the King Church in Kansas City, Missouri, an independent and affirming Catholic community. He is currently completing an 11-month planting process and will launch on Sunday, February 14, 2021, the day after his planned ordination to the priesthood. His primary vocational interests include; church planting, parish ministry, church health, and evangelism. Links: Convergent Streams: The Premier ISM Magazine. Practical Church Planting Podcast. About our drink: Oppidan http://www.oppidanspirits.com/home/Smoke+Sea.html (Smoke + Sea) is a combination of their 4 Grain Straight Bourbon and Solera Aged Bourbon mash bills, finished in French oak and peated Islay scotch barrels. The French oak adds structure and dark fruit notes while the Islay casks add a layer of smoke, earth, and sea to the already malty and chocolaty bourbon. Bourbon on the nose and front palette with a briny and peaty finish. About the gear: Although the first cufflinks appeared in the 1600s, they did not become common until the end of the 18th century. Their development is closely related to that of the men’s shirt. Men have been wearing shirt-like items of clothing since the invention of woven fabric 5,000 years BC. Although styles and methods of manufacturing changed, the underlying form remained the same: a tunic opened to the front with sleeves and collar. By the middle of the 19th century the modern cufflink became popular. The shirt front, as well as collar and cuffs covering areas of the most wear, were made sturdier. This was practical but when clean and starched, collars and cuffs underscored the formal character of the clothing. However, they could be too stiff to secure the cuffs with a simple button. As a consequence, from the mid 19th century onward men in the middle and upper classes wore cufflinks. The industrial revolution meant that these could be mass-produced, making them available in every price category. About our topic: Auxilium Christianorum has 2 principal aims of the association: 1) To provide prayer for priests associated with Auxilium Christianorum so that their apostolate in driving out demons is efficacious. 2) To provide prayers for the members – priests, laity, family and friends – so that they are not adversely affected by the demonic. About the Auxilium Christianorum: The Church teaches us that it is divided into the Church Triumphant (which includes the members of the Church in heaven), the Church Suffering (this includes the members of the Church in purgatory), and the Church Militant (this refers to those members of the Church who are alive in this world). Because we are part of the Church Militant, we are in a spiritual warfare and this spiritual warfare requires that we recognize, as Saint Paul teaches us “For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places.” (Ephesians [6:12]) The members of the Auxilium Christianorum should always bear in mind the reality of our state as members of the Church living in this world. Despite St. Paul's teaching, many Catholics do not take seriously their obligation to wage war against the demonic forces. It is, for this reason, the Association of the Auxilium Christianorum was founded. Learn more by going to the http://auxiliumchristianorum.org/ (official website.) About our drink: We sipped on a little homebrew from Southeast Oklahoma. We were told it was a Choc beer. There are several discussions of the origin and composition of choc beer, but the one that seems most realistic is that the name was first applied to an alcoholic drink made by the Choctaw Indians from wild plants found in what is now Southeastern Oklahoma. However, by the mid-1930’s, during the depression years, choc generally referred to any homemade, slightly alcoholic beverage. The drink was made from a variety of inexpensive raw materials, depending on availibility, and was usually barely palatable. In the Southwest, the fermenting liquid that dripped from ensilage and collected in the bottom of silos was sometimes drunk. It was also not unusual for people to collect spoiled fruit from grocery stores, put the fruit in a bucket of water, and leave it under their house porch until it fermented. Luckily, the process has been tweaked over the years so it is light, refreshing, and very drinkable. About the gear: https://shop.catholic.com/behold-your-mother-a-biblical-and-historical-defense-of-the-marian-doctrines/ (“Behold your Mother” by Tim Staples) From the cross Jesus gave us his mother to be our mother, too: a singularly holy model, consoler, and intercessor for our spiritual journey. Yet most Protestants—and too many Catholics—don't understand the role that God wants her to play in our lives. In Behold Your Mother, Tim Staples takes you through the Church's teachings about the Blessed Virgin Mary, showing their firm Scriptural and historical roots and dismantling the objections of those who mistakenly believe that Mary competes for the attention due Christ alone. Combining the best recent scholarship with a convert's in-depth knowledge of the arguments, Staples has assembled the most thorough and useful Marian apologetic you'll find anywhere. He also shows how all the Marian doctrines are relevant—even essential—to a salvific faith in Jesus. From her divine maternity to her perpetual virginity, from her Immaculate Conception to her Assumption, the Church's core teachings about Mary are intertwined with the mysteries of Christ. In a word, Mary matters. Read Behold Your Mother and find out just how much. About our drink: https://www.highwest.com/products/american-prairie-bourbon.php (American Prairie™ Bourbon) is named after the American Prairie Reserve, a group working to create the largest wildlife reserve in the lower 48 states. High West Distillery is passionate about the American West's natural beauty. That's why we want to raise awareness of one of the most fantastic projects of our time: the American Prairie Reserve in northeastern Montana. This is an amazing effort to assemble the largest wildlife reserve in the lower 48 states. When stepping onto the plains of American Prairie Reserve, it's easy to imagine the landscape as Lewis and Clark and Native Americans saw it, with thundering herds of bison, racing bands of pronghorn antelope and prairie dog towns dotting the horizon. When complete, the Reserve will be approximately 5,000 square miles; larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Grand Teton National Parks combined. Go to americanprairie.org to learn how to visit and support this worthy cause. Capable of running at speeds up to 55 miles per hour, the pronghorn antelope is North America's fastest land mammal and performs the continent's second longest land migration of more than 500 miles. Because of their love of travel, pronghorn require large areas of open and intact grasslands. Moreover, pronghorn populations have decreased 98% since the 1800's due to habitat destruction. American Prairie Reserve helps pronghorn through its ongoing fence removal efforts and by conserving wildlife corridors. Our American Prairie is a carefully crafted blend of straight bourbons at least 2 years old, (see highwest.com for technical details and sourcing.) making a great sipper and thoughtful person's whiskey. Sacraments of Healing is a Hillenbrand Lecture by Fr. Stice, Director of the Office of Worship for the diocese of Knoxville, and a graduate of the Liturgical Institute. Following the model of rites-based study of the sacred liturgy promoted at the Liturgical Institute, this first volume in a series of three presentations explores two key topics in catechesis on the sacraments of healing. This lecture was presented on March 10, 2016 at the Liturgical Institute.
On April 16 and 17, 2015, The Liturgical Institute hosted nearly 200 attendees for a ground-breaking conference joining the study of catechesis and the sacred liturgy, bringing together an unprecedented group of scholars and practitioners to address the question: What can be done to communicate the possibility that liturgy can be a transformative encounter with God which leads to the deepest levels of joy and missionary awareness? This is a lecture from that conference.
