What happens when traditional Catholic theology clashes with modern interpretations in the liturgy? Join us as we embark on an enlightening exploration of the Novus Ordo Mass and the implications it has on our faith. We'll compare it with the Traditional Latin Mass, known for its fervor and reverence, challenging our listeners to experience both and feel the stark contrast. As we journey through this discourse, we'll spotlight how changes in the English liturgy have induced a shift in doctrine, a trend that seems to be ominously surfacing today. We'll also delve into the intricate details of the TLM's rubrics and the significance of altar placements, reflecting on how these dimensions can shape the faith experience. Our exploration will reveal how the Novus Ordo Mass, with its flexible rubrics, has led to considerable variations in Church services. This, we fear, may lead to a de facto schism, with Catholics 'church hopping' akin to Protestant traditions. As we traverse these discussions, we'll also share insights into the Eucharist as a communal meal, reminding us of our place in the Father's family. Finally, we'll journey through traditional Catholic theology, exploring the theology of Sacrosanctum Concilium and its relevance to the Novus Ordo Mass. We'll discuss the concept of sin and justice against God, reflecting on the importance of the sacrificial system. Engage with us as we share our passion for the traditional Latin Mass, its profound impact, and the beauty of our faith. We promise this episode will challenge your perspectives and deepen your understanding of Catholic liturgy.********************************************************https://www.avoidingbabylon.comLocals Community:  https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comStore:  https://avoiding-babylon.sellfy.store/RSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssSpiritusTV:  https://spiritustv.com/@avoidingbabylonRumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-1626455Odysee:  https://odysee.com/@AvoidingBabylonBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! This shall give us hope that we can do this," said Bishop Athanasius Schneider, O.R.C., the auxiliary bishop of Astana, Kazakhstan, and author of "The Catholic Mass: Steps to Restore the Centrality of God in the Liturgy" (Sophia Institute Press). “These bishops and priests who are against the Traditional Mass, and persecuting it, they are the new Pharisees and scribes who are forbidding the simple one, the little one — as you mention, the Traditional Mass is packed with young people — they are prohibiting them to glorify Christ in such a worthy and respectful manner as it is the Traditional Mass.” Follow Bishop Schneider at his website, Gloria Dei, and @BishopAthanas1 on Twitter.

This week's Say Yes to Holiness podcast 1:1 Conversation is with Jesse Weiler, Host of The Liturgy Guys podcast. The conversation between Jesse and I ran the length and breadth and height and depth of topics concerning the liturgy. Everything from what parts of the Mass we should be singing, to books and online courses we can use to grow in our appreciation and understanding of the Mass to how he ended up being a host of a podcast about the liturgy was all part of our fast paced and enjoyable conversation. The Liturgy Guys podcast is an initiative of the Liturgical Institute, Adoremus Bulletin, and Benedictine College. Christopher Carstens and Dr. Denis McNamara sit down with host Jesse Weiler every week to talk about Catholic Liturgy. At the end of each episode our Liturgy experts take time to answer listener submitted questions. The goal of this podcast is to share the treasures of Liturgy with English speaking Catholics all over the world. Jesse also serves as the Director of The Liturgical Institute, so we spent some time talking about the mission of the Institute that was established in the year 2000 by His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, in order to prepare Catholics for a “new era in liturgical renewal.” It serves a diverse international student population of laity, religious and clergy. Monsignor M. Francis Mannion served as its founding Director, and established the sacramental foundation for the program that it enjoys today. The Liturgical Institute prepares its students in a context of prayer and scholarship with the Church's future priests, deacons, pastors and ministers to bring solid theological knowledge, critical reasoning and practical skills to bear on the challenges opened by the exciting phase of liturgical renewal emerging in recent years. I pray that this conversation with Jesse helps encourage you to continue to do WHATEVER IT TAKES so as to increase your active, full and conscious participation in the Mass and bring greater glory to God. Before we begin our first episode of 2022, we want to take a moment and ask for your vote on the best of Ministry Monday episode in 2021. From Gregorian chant to live streaming, the Exsultet to the liturgical prayers, improvisation to the public domain and everything in between, it's been a busy year for Ministry Monday. This year we produced 47 episodes of topics on music, ministry and liturgy, and we'd love to hear your feedback. What did you like the most in last year's Ministry Monday programming?Vote for your favorite 2021 topics and/or episodes from Ministry Monday here. Deadline to vote is January 24, 2022. We will feature the “best of” episode in Ministry Monday on January 31, 2022!Well, I hope this episode finds you rested and at least partially recovered from the joy and stress of the Christmas celebrations! We find these weeks in Winter Ordinary Time to be those of restoration and recovery when it comes to pastoral music. It's a moment of breath before we pivot and, yes, start to think of Lent. But let's not begin that journey just yet! Today starts a month-long focus on continuing education opportunities. As we begin this new calendar year, it's important for us to take time for renewal, education and formation. It's at the center of who we are and what we do at NPM. This year we are committing to learning and formation opportunities, and invite you to join us! The first opportunity of learning we'll be featuring is The Essentials of Catholic Liturgy. Liturgy, Life and Discipleship, the third track of the Essentials of Catholic Liturgy, begins this month and is developed in partnership with NPM and LTP. These six weeks of courses emphasize the celebration of the Eucharist as our source and summit of Christian life, and will help pastoral ministers—musicians and liturgists, notably—discuss and break open how liturgy interacts with the modern world, evangelization, mystagogy, social justice, and spirituality. And so I sat down with Timothy Johnston to dig deeper. Until very recently, Timothy served as an Editor and Liturgical Training Consultant for Liturgy Training Publications. Timothy joins us today from the Archdiocese of Washington, DC.

We'll finish our discussion from last week, all leading to the main question – how can the Church, which is indefectible, give us a rite of worship which is defective? Last week we looked at how the Church could, in fact promulgate errors through an ecumenical, non-dogmatic Council. Then we saw how the Church is not always infallible in its disciplinary laws – so today we'll continue on that same track – looking at Liturgy. Have there been errors in Catholic Liturgy in the past? Were they corrected? What can history, and logic, tell us about the infallibility of the Church in its Liturgy? And can we be 100% certain about any of this, or does prudence have a role to play?

His professional Schola Cantorum is renowned for keeping very much alive the “Church’s treasure of sacred music” for the worship of God in the sacred liturgy. James also shares his perspective and advice on how priests and music directors can take steps to build up the sacred music programs at parishes.   James’ Biography James D. Wetzel is the Director of Music and Organist of the Parish of Saint Vincent Ferrer and Saint Catherine of Siena on Manhattan’s Upper East Side where he directs the professional Schola Cantorum in over 70 services annually. He is the sub-dean and chairman of the programming committee of the New York City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, a board member of the Catholic Artists Society, and a member of the New York Purgatorial Society and the Society for Catholic Liturgy. Born in Pittsburgh, James earned a bachelor’s degree in organ performance from The Juilliard School where he studied with Paul Jacobs and was the first person ever to graduate with a master’s degree and a professional studies certificate in choral conducting from Manhattan School of Music under Kent Tritle.
