Send us a textJoin me this week for a special Father's Day episode featuring my seven favorite songs about fathers. While rock music is abundant with songs about mothers, tracks about dads are less common, and often less flattering. I'll share the range of songs about fathers, exploring stories of regret, resilience, and the complexities of fatherhood through songs by legends like Bruce Springsteen, The Temptations, Paul Simon, and more. Tune in for a heartfelt tribute to the men that shape our lives, for better and sometimes for worse. What the Riff?!?
1989 - November: Bad Religion "No Control"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2023 32:33

While the late 80's were the high water mark for overproduced hair bands, there was an undercurrent flowing below the mainstream popularity which would surface in the 90's as the punk revival.  Los Angeles-based Bad Religion is a group which would not only benefit from that revival, but many consider the band to be a founder of the movement.  The band formed in 1980 and released a couple of albums before going on hiatus in 1983 and splitting up shortly thereafter.  After a slowly getting back together in 1986, they released their third album entitled "Suffer."  While on tour promoting that album, the band began work on their fourth album, No Control.The band for this album was Greg Graffin on lead vocals, Greg Hetson on guitar, Brett Gurewitz on guitar and backing vocals, Jay Bentley on bass and backing vocals, and Pete Finestone on percussion.  Building this album while on tour gave it a fast and high energy feel, with the band reverting to a hardcore punk style.While undeniably punk, Bad Religion has a more melodic sound than many of their punk predecessors.  They also exhibit solid, significant lyrics, and utilize three-part vocal harmonies that are not normally associated with the genre.  The idea of this group is to emphasize action, and living in the moment.Friend of the show (and John Lynch's better half) Heather Lynch brings us this hallmark of the punk revival because it is the album that introduced her to punk rock. Change of IdeasThe lead-off track for the album clocks in at 55 seconds, making it onto Loudwire's top ten list of "Greatest Songs Under One Minute Long."  The concept in Graffin's lyrics is that we need to get away from ideas that trap us in fear and theory.Big BangThis song was penned by guitarist Brett Gurewitz.  The lyrics are about how folks are searching for something in science or religion without really living their lives.  "Big bang, big crunch.  You know there's no free lunch.  Kneel down and pray, here comes your judgment day."No ControlThe title track is a sonic trip to the mosh pit.  We think we have things in hand, but everything fades away very soon, and we are powerless to control it.I Want to Conquer the WorldWe all have thought at times that the world would be a better place if we could just take over for a while.  Gurewitz reflects on this in this piece, and wonders what we are doing here and now to make things a little better.  "I want to conquer the world.  Give all the idiots a brand new religion, put an end to poverty, uncleanliness and toil.  Promote equality in all of my decisions."YouThis is a fast, angry song. "And you! painted my entire world but I don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled.  And I won't forget it." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Two Step Mamau by Wayne Toups & Zydecajun (from the motion picture "Steel Magnolias" )This southern film was had an all star cast and showcased the talents of a young Julia Roberts. STAFF PICKS:Sold Me Down the River by the AlarmWayne's staff pick reminds us of Power Station's "Bang the Gong."  It made it to number 50 on the Billboard charts, but it was prominent on rock stations at the time.  It is about a lovesick guy who got his heart broken.  The Alarm is from Wales, but is often compared to Ireland's U2.Let the Day Begin by The CallRob brings us the title track from the Call's sixth studio album.  It is a positive song with a shuffle beat.  It was used as the campaign theme song for Al Gore in 2000.  The band formed in 1980 in Santa Cruz.The Living Years by Mike & the Mechanics John Lynch's staff pick is Mike Rutherford's (bassist from Genesis) band, formed in 1985.  The song is a wistful tune about missing the opportunity to truly connect with a father while he was alive.  This is the title track from their second album, released in 1988.We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy JoelHeather features a song with 118 historical references in this fast-paced song.  The idea of the track comes from a conversation Joel had with Sean Lennon about how difficult it is to be a young person in the times.  Joel thought about how each generation has its issues, and pointed out some of the troubles from earlier decades. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Proliferous Souls by PestilenceWe haven't covered this Dutch death metal band, but we remedy that with this instrumental out at the time.

And that’s where all cybersecurity regulation basically resides.” – Craig Watanabe “In the Fortress Model, the idea is you create this fortress. Everything on the inside of the fortress, all the interior is safe and you try to keep all the unknowns (all the bad stuff) out. That model works really well when you have a centralized work environment and you have a centralized IP. It’s a perfectly reasonable, very usable, and a very functional model. That model, however, doesn’t work as well in a remote or hybrid work environment.” – Craig Watanabe “I think there has been a paradigm shift at Microsoft and other big vendors, with an emphasis on security. That’s clear to me. I don’t think Microsoft would have done these things prior.” – Craig Watanabe Resources: Compliance in Context Contact Form Compliance in Context, LinkedIn Twitter: @compliancepod

Paul Carrack joins Music Journeys to reflect on his career and his latest release One on One. From Ace to Squeeze to Mike + The Mechanics, Carrack has been a part of some magical music. The 70-year-old talks about his humble beginnings, how Ace enjoyed soccer as much as music, the lasting power of songs like How Long and The Living Years, his lack of repair skills, and why he's okay with the fact that most people recognize the songs he's been a part of more than his name.

“Precious Time" The Sheffield born Paul Carrack's voice is one of the worlds great superpowers. Carrack got his start at 19 playing keyboards in Warm Dust for a handful of albums. From there, he formed ACE who had the massive international hit "How Long." After they broke up in 1977 he played with Frankie Miller and joined Roxy Music as their keyboardist. He put out a solo album in 1980, then joined Squeeze who had a rather massive hit with “Tempted" that featured Carrack on lead vocals. Around the same time he had a band called Noise to Go with Nick Lowe. That band became Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit who not only put out two albums, they were John Hiatt's backing band for Side Two of his Riding With The King record. Carrack did session work for the Pretenders and The Smiths for their debut album then he joined Mike and the Mechanics, logged a few seismic hits with them—you know, "The Living Years" and "Silent Running." He became a member of Roger Waters' touring band, put out another solo record, had a hit with "Don't Shed A Tear"—then formed a band with Rupert Hine, rejoined Squeeze for the Some Fantastic Place record, had a song he co-wrote with Don Felder and Timothy B Schmitt of The Eagles covered by the Eagles and that track ended up being the most played song in the United States in 1995. Carrack kept up his solo career, but still had time to join Ringo Starr's All Star Band, collaborate with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and join Eric Clapton's band. Over the years he's also played with Simply Red, BB King, Elton John and the list goes on and on. There's actually a great BBCFour documentary about Paul called "The Man With The Golden Voice.” Paul's new album One On One is his 18th solo album and it's fabulous. A stirring collection that's about as soulfully precise as it gets, Carrack's voice is filled with a timeless blend of warmth and groove and this album proves that time can't touch him. He sounds as effortless and as affecting as ever. It's yet another winning entry into a pretty flawless discography. In this conversation, Carrack talks to Alex about staying creative during a pandemic, what he learned about leading his own band from watching Clapton, and why his son think he's cool for playing on The Smiths' debut. He also talks about his new album, wanting to make a country record, and how Elvis Costello had the idea for him to sing “Tempted.” www.paulcarrack.net www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Mike and the Mechanics will release their first album since 2011's The Road this spring. Let Me Fly, out now, is the eighth studio effort from Genesis co-founder Mike Rutherford's other hit-making band. “In 1985, we were having the best time in Genesis,” Rutherford says in a press release announcing the album. “But after 28 years, myself [and fellow Genesis members] Phil [Collins] and Tony [Banks] wanted variety, so we ran our band and our solo careers side by side happily for many years. To be honest, it saved Genesis. The fact I'm still doing it with the Mechanics just makes me smile.” Let Me Fly is the second record to feature the current Mike and the Mechanics lineup, which coalesced around singers Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar in 2010. Keyboardist Luke Juby, drummer Gary Wallis and guitarist Anthony Drennan round out the band. Vocalist Paul Young (who sang the hit singles “All I Need Is a Miracle” and “Taken In”) died in 2000; Paul Carrack (“Silent Running,” “The Living Years”) left in 2004, around the time the band took a break. They returned with a 2014 update of “Living Years,” which went to No. 1 25 years earlier. An advance single from Let Me Fly, “Don't Know What Came Over Me,” is expected on Feb. 28. Look for a complete track listing for the album below. Mike and the Mechanics will tour the U.K. and Europe into March; after that, things are up in the air, Rutherford admitted. “I've never had a long-term plan, even with Genesis,” he said. “I'll put Let Me Fly out and I'll see where it goes. What happens this year will tell me what to do next. I like that!” Mike and the Mechanics ‘Let Me Fly' Track Listing “Let Me Fly” “Are You Ready” “Wonder” “The Best Is Yet to Come” “Save the World” “High Life” “Don't Know What Came Over Me” “The Letter” “Not Out of Love” “Love Left Over” “I'll Be There for You” “Save My Soul” #Mike+theMechanics #SlackerMorningShow101theFox #Genesis

REFLECTION QUOTES Every generation Blames the one before And all of their frustrations Come beating on your door I know that I'm a prisoner To all my Father held so dear I know that I'm a hostage To all his hopes and fears I just wish I could have told him in the living years You say you just don't see it He says it's perfect sense You just can't get agreement In this present tense We all talk a different language Talkin' in defense So we open up a quarrel Between the present and the past We only sacrifice the future It's the bitterness that lasts Say it loud, say it clear You can listen as well as you hear It's too late when we die To admit we don't see eye to eye ~“The Living Years” by Mike & the Mechanics (1989) “We live in a time when high self-esteem is encouraged from childhood, when young people have more freedom and independence than ever, but also far more depression, anxiety, cynicism, and loneliness… More than any other generation in history, the children of Baby Boomers are disappointed by what they find when they arrive at adulthood.” ~Dr. Jean Twenge, professor of Psychology at San Diego State University in her book Generation Me: Why Today's Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled— and More Miserable Than Ever Before “…[U]nderlying all this parental angst is the hopeful belief that if we just make the right choices, that if we just do things a certain way, our kids will turn out to be not just happy adults, but adults that make us happy.” ~Lori Gottlieb, “How to Land Your Kid in Therapy” (The Atlantic, July/August 2011) “We're [parents] always bluffing, pretending we know best, when most of the time we're just praying we won't screw up too badly.” ~Jodi Picoult in House Rules SERMON PASSAGE Selections from Proverbs 7The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
 Fools despise wisdom and instruction. (1:7) 1My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; 2 For length of days and years of life, And peace they will add to you. 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. (3:1-2, 5-6) 27Cease listening, my son, to discipline and you will stray from the words of knowledge. (19:27) 1A wise son makes a father glad,
 But a foolish son is a grief to his mother. (10:1) 3A man who loves wisdom makes his father glad, But he who keeps company with harlots wastes his wealth. (29:3) 1A wise son accepts his father's discipline,
But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. (13:1) 32He who neglects discipline despises himself,
 But he who listens to reproof acquires understanding. 33The fear of the Lord is the instruction for wisdom,
 And before honor comes humility. (15:32-33) 12There is a way which seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death. (14:12) 24He who withholds his rod hates his son,
 But he who loves him disciplines him diligently. (13:24) 15The rod and reproof give wisdom, But a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother. (29:15) 15Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline will remove it far from him. (22:15) 17The eye that mocks a father, And scorns a mother, The ravens of the valley will pick it out, And the young eagles will eat it. (30:17) 18Discipline your son while there is hope,
 And do not desire his death. (19:18) 5Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse; He who guards himself will be far from them. 6Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. (22:5-6)
