Star Wars Celebration Japan has come and gone and since there's no new Star Wars comics this week, we break down the key comics news that was made the semiannual event celebrating all thing Star Wars.One thing that was notable was convention-exclusive Star Wars: Beyond Victory #1 by Ethan Sacks, Steven Cummings, Will Sliney and Shogo Aoki, with a cover by Phil Noto. The one-shot was only available at the ILM/Meta booth at Star Wars Celebration in Japan. It serves as prequel story to the Meta Quest experience "Star Wars: Beyond Victory -- A Mixed Reality Playset." So far (as of April 23), four copies are on eBay, with one at $305. We don't have a copy -- it's unclear if it'll ever be released outside of SWCJ -- but when we get one, we'll offer up a review.One thing that drew our attention? Marvel editor in chief C.B. Cebulski, at Star Wars Celebration's Lucasfilm Publishing panel, said the company is doing a Millennium Falcon-focused comic later this year.Comics Discussed This Week:Star Wars: Beyond VIctory #1 Star Wars Comics New to Marvel Unlimited This Week:Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku -- Last Stand #3 (of 4)News: Star Wars Celebration Japan concluded. Hablaremos de los anuncios que nos ha ido dejando este primer día de la Star Wars Celebration en la tierra del sol naciente. De los paneles de The Mandalorian y Grogu, la presentación de la próxima película de Star Wars con el título Starfighter, protagonizada por Ryan Gosling y dirigida por Shawn Levy. A estos platos fuertes les han acompañado otros anuncios: la nueva serie animada Maul: Shadow Lord, protagonizada por el mítico villano que vimos por primera vez en La Amenaza Fantasma. o el panel de Lucasfilm Publishing donde nuestro amigo Kenny Ruiz, que presentó su próximo manga titulado Star Wars: Path of the Lightsaber. También os hablaremos de nuestros encuentros con otros autores y creativos de Star Wars, nuestras impresiones sobre el evento, el ambiente que se respira allí, las diferencias con anteriores SW Celebration en materia de organización y espacio. Back to a more manageable haul of Star Wars comics, with the second arc of the second volume of The High Republic kicking off in issue #6 (of 10) as Jedha City reacts to the infighting and riots and the Guardians of the Whills find renewed purpose.In Sana Starros #2 (of 5), deep family ties and history are revealed in a story that stretches back to the first phase of The High Republic era and includes a referential stop by the Solo: A Star Wars Story film.Finally, Bounty Hunters #32 brings Inferno Squadron to the fore, along with a nod to a species that was first featured in West End Games' Star Wars roleplaying game. October's Star Wars comics started off strong with creepy suspense in the Return to Vader's Castle #1, the first of five weekly issues from IDW Publishing, while in Marvel's Star Wars #72, Luke Skywalker went full farm-boy rube, losing his lightsaber in the process. In Doctor Aphra #37, Chelli finds herself bound to Darth Vader as the new, and likely last, arc takes flight with new artist Caspar Wijngaard and the march toward The Empire Strikes Back increases its steady pace.As for news, we're breaking down Marvel's plans for the third volumes of Star Wars and Darth Vader, which are due for release in January and February, with stories set firmly between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi written by Charles Soule and Greg Pak and illustrated by Jesus Saiz and Rafaella Ienco. This month’s episode of Hyperspace Theories takes us from books to fashion to movies, with plenty in between. Six months out from the release of The Rise of Skywalker, Tricia, B.J., and Kay look ahead to what might come next for Star Wars and its fans. We begin, though, in the present: discussing the recently released novel Alphabet Squadron by Alexander Freed. Taking place shortly after the defeat of the Empire, the book is the first in a trilogy telling the story of a group of pilots, each flying a different type of starfighter, who are tasked with tracking down an elite Imperial starfighter wing. We evaluate the book on its own terms, how it works to kick off a trilogy, and its relationship to Freed’s other work. As big fans of the X-Wing novel series in the Expanded Universe (Legends) era – featuring the tales of Rogue Squadron by Mike Stackpole and Wraith Squadron by Aaron Allston – we also consider how Alphabet Squadron compares and contrasts with those beloved stories. Earlier this month, Tricia and B.J. had the opportunity to attend San Diego Comic-Con as credentialed media for Fangirls Going Rogue, and they share some of their insights and reactions from the convention here on Hyperspace Theories, too. We start with the Her Universe Fashion Show, which Kay was able to follow along thanks to livestreams and social media. The work of the designers was impressive as always! Tricia talks about some of the other geek fashion she covered at the convention, as well. We also talk about the Star Wars panels at SDCC, including the Lucasfilm Publishing panel and a bit of Star Wars comics news, along with several other panels examining the role of women in pop culture and the entertainment industry. One of the SDCC panels Tricia attended gathered a group of experts to discuss how fans and fandoms display their reactions and emotions when long-running stories end. We take this idea as a starting point to look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars, both of which reach highly anticipated endpoints this year. With Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, the MCU drew to close a ten-year, 22-movie epic storyline and resolved the fates of a number of prominent characters from the series. In December, The Rise of Skywalker will conclude a nine-movie, four-decade Skywalker Saga story told in the Star Wars films. We note the similarities and differences in the two franchises, and consider how the reactions to the end of the MCU’s Phase Three may or may not necessarily transpose to the aftermath of Episode IX. In particular, the Phase 4 slate of new films and Disney+ series announced at SDCC keeps the MCU moving forward at a fast pace, and with great strides in improving the diversity of the talent on screen and behind the scenes at Marvel Studios. By contrast, Lucasfilm currently is scheduled to have a three-year break before the next film and has only two Disney+ series announced for that time period; on the other hand, Star Wars tells stories in animation, books, and comics that continue to advance the same singular storyline in a way that Marvel does not. Although both the MCU and Star Wars will pivot in new directions, we expect to see some significant differences in how the franchises and their fandoms react and adapt going forward.
