The real risks of psychedelics, explained by Johns Hopkins professor Dr. Matthew Johnson. A pattern emerges when you compare the harmfulness of different types of psychoactive drugs: alcohol and hard drugs like heroin and crack cocaine rank as the most harmful, while psychedelic substances like psilocybin and LSD score as the least harmful. It's perhaps not too surprising. After all, psychedelic substances are generally non-toxic and medically safe to consume. The drugs do not come with the same kind of overdose risks that substances like alcohol and heroin do. Still, psychedelics can have profound effects on the psyche. Bad trips are a real phenomenon. But bad trips are sometimes the result of an interplay between the drugs and the user's environment. As explained by Dr. Matthew W. Johnson, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins, the conditions under which someone experiences psychedelics can significantly influence the trip — for the worse or the better. About Matthew Johnson: Matthew W. Johnson, Ph.D., is The Susan Hill Ward Endowed Professor of Psychedelics and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins. Psychedelics: Can they solve the ‘hard problem' of consciousness? | Matthew Johnson

Can psychedelics solve the ‘hard problem' of consciousness? Johns Hopkins professor Matthew Johnson explains. It seems safe to say that you have subjective experiences of what it's like to exist. But things get complicated when you try to prove that phenomenal experiences, or qualia, extend to every human being that you see around you. And things get even more complicated when you try to scientifically explain how the physical matter in your brain gives rise to consciousness, and why such experiences exist in the first place. This is known as the hard problem of consciousness. It has yet to be solved. Could the mind-altering power of psychedelics offer a solution to this longstanding problem? Dr. Matthew W. Johnson is leaving open the possibility. As a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Johnson is one of the world's most published scientists when it comes to the effects of psychedelics on the human brain. In this Big Think interview, Dr. Johnson explains why we should be both open and careful about the prospect of psychedelics helping us crack the hard problem of consciousness, which remains one of the world's most puzzling questions. 0:00 Defining consciousness 0:47 The ‘hard problem' of consciousness 1:44 Psychedelics & consciousness About Matthew Johnson: Matthew W. How a ‘heroic dose' of psychedelics can be therapeutic, explained by a Johns Hopkins professor. Psychedelic research is enjoying a renaissance. Recent studies have shown that psychedelic drugs like LSD and psilocybin seem to be a safe and effective method for treating conditions like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. And unlike common antidepressants, some people report long-lasting improvements in their mental health conditions after taking just one dose of psychedelics. What makes these substances so unique and powerful? That's one of the driving questions behind the research of Matthew W. We'll never be able to answer that question, but the exciting thing is that we are currently living through the renaissance of psychedelic science, and today's podcast is with one of the leading experts of this movement. Dr. Matthew W. Johnson, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins. He is one of the world's most published scientists on the human effects of psychedelics, and is on the front line of resurrecting psychedelic research. In today's episode, we dive into the current state of psychedelic research, and we posit potential upcoming applications for a variety of psychedelic compounds (DMT, Psilocybin, MDMA, Ketamine, etc.). More generally, this discussion was a beautiful merger between my experiential knowledge and Dr. Matthew Johnson's scientific findings. He is someone who I admire for his curious attitude (true to the original understanding of science) towards topics that most people dismiss. Stigma around psychedelics appears to be fading in this country. Interest in evidence-based ways to enhance treatment is on the rise - including research into the potential found by adding psilocybin–otherwise known as magic mushrooms–as well as MDMA, Ketamine, LSD, and Ayahuasca, especially with the expansion of mental health needs brought on by the pandemic. Studies are showing exciting results about the possibility for psychedelics to help people with treatment-resistant mental health disorders, including chronic depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder.   “This is what makes psychedelics unique as potential medicines: they sort of open a window of opportunity, and we know biologically, there seems to be more mental flexibility. And based on animal research more–what we call–neuroplasticity.” - Dr. Matthew W. Johnson, Ph.D.   But there is still much to learn about what these medications do, how they work, how to administer them safely, and how to mitigate the risks they may pose, especially as recreational use of psychedelics may increase as a side-effect of their increasing visibility.    Our guest, Dr. Matthew W. Johnson, is the Susan Hill Ward Professor in Psychedelics and Consciousness, and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins. He is one of the world's most published scientists on the human effects of psychedelics, and has conducted seminal research in the behavioral economics of substance use , and risk behavior.    If you enjoy this podcast, be sure to follow or subscribe wherever you are listening, and share the show with your colleagues and friends. welcome to the nonlinear library, where we use text-to-speech software to convert the best writing from the rationalist and ea communities into audio. this is: AMA: Tim Ferriss, Michael Pollan, and Dr. Matthew W. Johnson on psychedelics research and philanthropy, published by Aaron Gertler on the effective altruism forum. We're excited to bring you an AMA with three people who have done a lot to increase the profile and prospects of psychedelic research. Effective altruism has a history of engaging with psychedelics (see these posts, for example) as a promising intervention for mental health issues — one which could sharply reduce the suffering of tens or hundreds of millions of people. Between Tim, Michael, and Matt, we have many kinds of expertise here — nonprofit investing, journalism, medicine, and more. We hope the discussion is interesting, and useful for anyone who's thought about working or giving within this area. We'll gather questions for a couple of days. Michael and Matt will answer questions on Sunday, May 16th. Tim will answer questions on Tuesday, May 18th (we've pushed his original date back by one day). Author introductions Tim Ferriss Hi, everyone! I'm Tim Ferriss, and I'll be doing an AMA here. More on me: I'm an author (The 4-Hour Workweek, Tools of Titans, etc.) and early-stage investor (Uber, Shopify, Duolingo, Alibaba, etc.). Through my foundation and since circa 2015, I have committed at least $4-6 million to non-profit scientific research and clinical treatments of “intractable” psychiatric conditions such as treatment-resistant depression, opioid/opiate addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and others. I believe (A) this research has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of mental health and addiction, which the data from studies thus far seem to support, and (B) I'm a case study. Psychedelics have saved my life several times over, including helping me to heal from childhood abuse. Projects and institutions include the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London (the first such center in the world); the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (the first such center in the US); MAPS (Phase 3 studies for MDMA-assisted psychotherapy); divisions and studies at UCSF (e.g., The Neuroscape Psychedelic Division); The University of Auckland (LSD microdosing); and others (e.g., pro bono launch of Trip of Compassion documentary on MDMA-assisted psychotherapy). I evaluate non-profit and scientific initiatives in the same way I evaluate for-profit startups, and I believe some bets in this nascent field represent high-leverage, low-cost opportunities to bend the arc of history, much as Katharine McCormick did for the first birth control pill. Here is one blog post with more elaboration. I am happy to answer any questions through the AMA. Dr. Matthew Johnson is no doubt better qualified to answer the scientific (and more), and Michael Pollan is no doubt more qualified to answer the journalistic (and more), but I will do my best to be helpful! Michael Pollan I'm a journalist and author who focuses on ways that the human and natural worlds intersect — including within our minds. In 2015, I wrote a New Yorker article on psychotherapy, "The Trip Treatment", which profiled a number of cancer patients whose experiences with psilocybin had reduced or entirely banished their fear of death. This led me to embark on a two-year journey into the history of psychedelic policy and its potential for modern medicine, and to write a book: How to Change Your Mind: The New Science of Psychedelics. My forthcoming book, This is Your Mind on Plants, covers the strange contrast between the human experience with several plant drugs — opium, caffeine, and mescaline — and how we choose to define and regulate them. I'd be glad to answer questions about anything I've written on the subject. Particular topics of interest: The history of drug regulatio...

In this episode, Kyle and Joe interview Dr. Matthew Johnson: Professor at Johns Hopkins, writer of the recent paper, "Consciousness, Religion, and Gurus: Pitfalls of Psychedelic Medicine," and researcher (with others) on several trials through Johns Hopkins involving psilocybin: for smoking cessation, anorexia, mood and effects of early-stage Alzheimer's, opioid addiction, post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome, co-morbid alcoholism with depression, and soon, LSD for chronic pain.  Johnson talks about his paper, which largely deals with the ambiguity of the term "consciousness" and how it applies to David Chalmers' hard problem, and asks many philosophical questions: What is consciousness? What is phenomenal consciousness? Are things that seem like you actually similar? Do they have similar experiences or agency? How would you even know? If you built a robot that displays perfectly human-like qualities similar to yours and appears to have agency and experience, does it? Can you prove that it doesn't?  They also talk about how clinicians and investigators bringing their own religious and spiritual frameworks to psychedelic and breathwork sessions can create unnecessary expectations and narratives and make many people think the experience isn't for them, the theory that the default mode network decoupling just makes you feel not quite yourself and that this action can be observed with other non-psychedelic drugs, access consciousness, how it’s ok to feel things that can’t be proven scientifically, shamans, gurus, and the idea of enlightenment, the nuance in everything, and the beneficial sense of ownership people feel after getting through a challenging psychedelic session. Notable Quotes “It may very well be that the default mode network is a key or one of the keys that explains quintessential psychedelic effects, although it’s also possible that it’s not so special- that it explains maybe some of the effects sometimes, and that these aren’t so quintessentially psychedelic.”  “You don’t have to pretend like you have the answers. I don’t know, frankly, I think we’d all be better off if physicians had more humility. …There’s a whole lot about the human body we don’t know.”“Whether we’re talking about a Richard Dawkins style- you know, kind of a hard atheist who might be inclined to be of the spaghetti monster variety-appreciating person, or whether it be [a] Muslim- like, do we want a statue of a Buddha to tell either of those people that ‘this is not for you’ if they’re incredibly suffering from end-of-life anxiety, if they’re suffering from a decades-long addiction, if they’re depressed and are at risk of suicide? I don’t know, it just seems like we really need to think: how is this going to play out in the world and how are we really going to help people? Do we really want someone to think, ‘Oh no, this stuff is for hippies or new age folks’? They might be a political conservative, they might be a veteran, they might be someone who would never touch an illicit drug in their life. Do we want those types of people saying, ‘This is not for me’? I just see these as human experiences.” “One of the reasons why psychedelics and probably breathwork can be so effective is that people are doing their own heavy lifting. ...At least in the type of work that [I do in] clinical research with psychedelics, people come out feeling they have done (rightfully so) the heavy lifting. It’s not like, ‘Oh, I took some pill, and thanks to Pfizer, who was able to figure out a way to manipulate my serotonin system, I’m feeling better. Thanks to Doc So-and-so who knew that I needed Lexapro rather than Prozac.’ It’s like, ‘No, you faced your own demons, dude. You did the hard work. You cried your heart out about that thing you did you don’t feel good about and you came out with a laundry list of what you need to fix with your life, and with this renewed sense because you feel like you’ve earned it.’”   Links "Consciousness, Religion, and Gurus: Pitfalls of Psychedelic Medicine," by Matthew W.
