Terri Trespicio is the author of the fabulously helpful and hopeful book, Unfollow Your Passion: How to Create a Life That Matters to You, which was named one of the best feel-good reads of the year by the Washington Post. Her book is based on her TEDx talk, which is called Stop Searching for Your Passion and has been viewed 8 million times. Terri opens that talk recounting the day she got fired from Martha Stewart's Whole Living magazine, which is where I was lucky enough to meet, work with, and become friends with her. Today, Terri is an in-demand speaker, a brand strategist, a writing teacher, a standup comedian, and always a writer whose work can soothe you, crack you up, and crack open possibilities in your mind all at once. If you can't tell, I love her. In this first part of her interview, we unpack: - The thought process on whether or not you should stop working for yourself and go get a job - How creativity is more like a butterfly than a workhorse - One of the best things you can do to promote creativity (hint: it's not what you think) - Terri's morning routine in detail - Writing in your robe For detailed show notes, with links to everything we discuss--plus bonus photos!-- visit katehanley.substack.com. And.... we're back!FINALLY.I had no intention of being gone from the show for so long, but sometimes life is mess. Perfect is nowhere to be found within a million miles of my life right now, but then again, can't all of us say the same?Season 1 of Let Perfect Burn was some of the strongest medicine I've ever taken because it made me feel so renewed every time I got to have intimate, rewarding conversations with my guests. These women on the show were real, they were vulnerable, they were raw, they were gracious, they were funny, they made me laugh (hard) and they made me feel so very alive every single time I stepped in studio. And now... I get to do it again. Only it feels a little different this time. Season 1 I was still on the high of my inpatient psychiatric hospitalization— because I had advocated for myself for the first time in my life, I felt like my life was destined to only go up from there. YEAH. NO. Season 2 feels like landing back on Earth. And even though being on Earth doesn't have any of the self-actualization euphoria I felt before, I feel more grounded. Grounded in reality. Grounded as a woman speaking the truth— and as the great Ruth Bader Ginsburg would say, "Even if your voice shakes."I feel honored that you are still with me and that you want to take the chance on a second journey around the sun. Welcome back to Season 2 of Let Perfect Burn. Here we go.

What should we do when science and spirituality conflict? Should we follow our intuition on what and how to eat, or should we only make evidence-based food choices? And can we truly make evidence based food choices when the science often seems to be contradictory or constantly changing? In today's episode I speak with best selling author and inspirational speaker Victoria Moran, about how she navigates making healthy and ethical food choices as both a spiritual yogi and ethical vegan. Victoria is the bestselling author of thirteen books, including Creating a Charmed Life, The Love-Powered Diet, and the iconic Main Street Vegan. She is also a holistic health counselor, the founder and director of Main Street Vegan Academy, a podcast host, and film producer. Only 9 months ago now, I was leaving a psychiatric hospital, the moment in my life that inspired me to create this podcast. The laughter and the joy during these months on Let Perfect Burn were moments where my depression lightened, because I felt full- I was having these intimate, rewarding conversations with my guests. These women on the show were real, they were vulnerable, they were raw, they were gracious, they were funny, they made me laugh (hard) and they made me feel so very alive every single time I stepped in studio. And while we say goodbye (just for now) I want to leave you with every guest from Season 1 reminding us that when you let perfect burn, what's left can be really, really, beautiful.

In this episode, I speak with Joanna Silverman, of Early Parenting Partners. Joanna was a teacher, and when she got sick, she was forced to look at her life and figure out what she could do to continue working with children to make their lives better. Joanna founded Early Parenting Partners, a company geared at supporting parents to better care for their children. I personally used Joanna's services when my youngest son was born. I was terrified of falling back into post-partum depression and I needed someone skilled and passionate about childhood development to guide me through my son's attachment needs and how each phase of development shaped his sleep. I kid you not when I say, “SHE SAVED MY LIFE.”When you listen to Joanna speak, it is so clear that she knows who she is, what she stands for and what she has shed: “Aren't we all just tired of pretending? I don't want to spend time with someone that I'm pretending with anymore. Like, you know, this is me. And if it's too much for you, that's okay. But when you come to me in a crisis, I have got space for you.”We talk about being blessed by breaking points. And not blessed in that we are happy they happened, but in this way that the breaking has taught us something and attuned us to pieces of the world we had never been able to hear: “Breaking points are not easy, right? And they don't get fixed up into a little box. And if they do, then you're going to have another breaking point. And if we can all be honest with each other, about how incredibly difficult being human can be. I think there will be less shame.”Some highlights in this Episode from Joanna:" Letting perfect burn allows me to find my personal authority. I get rid of all the stories of what I picked up on what I should be. And I get to come home to what it is I want to be."" And that's how I feel about people I work with. I'm very upfront with people that this is what I stand for. And if that doesn't align for you, there's somebody who can work with you who aligns with your values. My values are not right, they're just mine."" And so when I think about the little guys that are challenged right now, or the students I work for, they're giving us a deep message about challenges and change. And if the system is working, you're not questioning the current narratives and I personally believe our current narratives need to be questioned."Don't Miss a Beat. This episode came at the perfect time as I've been on my "social lie detox" for about 5-6 months and was finding myself leaning into old patterns. Fortunately, this conversation was the perfect fix to get reinvigorated to continue with a practice that has been personally transformational. If you are someone who tries to "make everything right" and avoid rocking the boat, i think you will find this episode useful and inspiring. Highlights of our conversation: The disconnection between the theory of honesty and the day-to-day practice of it. What we misunderstand about honesty. How telling the truth about your relationship with alcohol can guide you into alignment. Jennifer Louden (JenniferLouden.com) may be a best-selling author, but she is no stranger to asking herself the question, "Why bother?" She says that this common turn of phrase, which is typically used as a sort of signal to indicate that we're giving up before we really try, is actually a real question that deserves answering. Her book, Why Bother? Discover the Desire for What's Next, turns the rhetorical question into a literal one and a personal invitation to figure out what we really want, what our stake is in trying, and how to access our desire to pursue it. The sequel, Get Your Bother On: A Guided Journal to Discover What's Next, features 200 bite-sized exercises and unique journaling prompts to help you access your desire and explore what you want to “bother” with, deep down. For 30 years, Jennifer has been an author, teacher, and leading voice on self-care and creative transformation. She has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show; she's a former columnist for Whole Living, a Martha Stewart magazine, and her work has been featured in People, USA Today, CNN, and two of author Brené Brown's best-selling books, Daring Greatly and Dare to Lead. With close to a million copies of her books in print in nine languages today, her 1992 book, The Women's Comfort Book, is attributed to helping begin the modern self-care movement. We recorded our interview in February 2020.Jen shares wisdom including...What it's like when, even after years of being a best-selling author, your latest book-in-progress "just isn't working"How Jen's lifelong fascination with understanding why people give up motivated her latest projects How we can summon curiosity, joy, desire, and more to help us reconnect with what we want from life Thank you to Jen for joining us on The New Story Is!If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review our show wherever you listen—it helps others find and enjoy our show.Send your feedback or nominate a guest for a future episode at TheNewStory.Is/Podcast.Want to become a sponsor of our show? If you have gone through a traumatic experience and/or living in a pandemic with restrictions, then this is an episode to listen to. I reflect upon the movie and book by P.D. James 'Children of Men' that depicts the year 2021, where the world is facing extinction. It does send one into a complex desire to sustain and nurture our very existence. A common theme for us presently is that we wish to go back to the way things were and having lived through that desire over years following trauma, it is something that can never happen. What we can do is move forward and embrace what I have named as whole living. Four key steps to guide us towards who we can be tomorrow.

Tammy suggests the following for good posture and alignment:The top of your head, where the soft spot on a baby is, faces the skyThe middle of your chest falls direct below thatYour center of gravity is what follows, at three fingers below your belly buttonthen finally your feet! The majority of the people that Tammy works with do not hold their hips forward enough, you want to push those forward just enough to engage your buttock muscles.Every single time you go to stand up, make sure you are standing, aligning with your self and having your buttocks engage before taking your first step.Tammy suggests that the next time you go and have a nice warm shower you stretch out your calves and the bottom of your feet. The bottom of your feet contains something called the "Gushing Spring"."Gushing Spring" is believed o be the spot where you bring the energy into your body.It is mentioned to start allocating your focus as 80% on the task at hand, and 20% on your body and what it is telling you that current moment. Many women are hesitant to pitch themselves to be on podcasts because they fear they may not be welcomed, or that they don’t have the right stories to share, and this is especially true for women of color. Let’s face it, it’s difficult to compliment ourselves, so how can we overcome that? And for those of us who do have a platform, how can we encourage more women to feel more comfortable with pitching us? On this episode, Visibility Strategist and Relationship Facilitator, Amelia Roberts shares why it’s so important for everyone to share the information within themselves, and how to pitch our stories. 3 Things You’ll Learn in This Episode Do the mindset work So often, we hold back from sharing our ideas because we aren’t sure they’re enough. A great way to combat this is by hiring a coach, someone who can help us sort through good ideas and those that need tweaking, and who can hold us accountable to taking action. Do the research To be featured on a podcast, do some research on the audience. Understand what they’re struggling with, and pitch with that in mind. If we know we have a solution to a common problem, we’re the perfect candidate to share our stories. Create an inclusive environment For those of us who do have a platform to share stories, it’s important to create a culture where everyone feels comfortable pitching to us. Do some research to find out how to serve those who aren’t pitching to us. Guest Bio Amelia Roberts is a Visibility Strategist and Relationship Facilitator, and Founder of Solutions by Amelia. You may recall that a few months back, I interviewed Dr. David Cox (@davidjcox_). In our discussion, we spent a fair amount of time talking about the literature on the use of psychedelics for the treatment of a variety of behavioral and mental health challenges. I recently got the opportunity to extend this conversation with Dr. Matthew Johnson (@Drug_Researcher). Matt Johnson is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at John Hopkins University, and he's been a leading figure in this area of research for over 15 years. His expertise in this area is so well regarded that he's been sought out by media outlets such as (takes deep breath): The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Globe and Mail, Daily Mail, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Denver Post, Baltimore Sun, CNN, CBS News, NBC News, The Atlantic, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Vogue, Whole Living, The Washingtonian, Scientific American, Nature, Vice, Insider, Inverse, Healthline, Psychology Today (pause to inhale...) 60 Minutes, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Situation Room, Fox Business News’ Kennedy, the Dr. Oz Show, PBS’ Retro Report, Labyrint (television show in the Netherlands), Spectrum News NY1, the BBC World Service, NPR’s Morning Edition, NPR’s Kojo Nnamdi Show, New Zealand Radio, and Newstalk Radio Ireland... just to name a few. Matt has also been featured in a special episode of The Tim Ferriss Show on this very topic. As such, I'm a little more than humbled to chat with him on Behavioral Observations! In our chat, we did a quick overview of Delay Discounting, talked about decision making with condom usage, and the behavioral economics of cannabis. As an aside, we've done quite a few shows on Behavioral Economics. Here's a quick list of them if you want to get really up to speed: Session 17, A Behavioral Economics Primer, Derek Reed. Session 114, The Behavioral Economics of Toilet Paper, Derek Reed. The aforementioned David Cox episode. Session 11: Obesity, Food Insecurity, Behavioral Economics, and Mindful Eating, Erin Rasmussen. Session 2: Science and Pseudoscience, Steve Lawyer. Back to this show, Matt and I spent a large part of our chat discussing his groundbreaking work in the area of psychedelics. We really get into the weeds, as it were, of how these studies are done, and discuss everything from recruiting participants, the timing of these trips, how participants are supported through their experiences, bad trips, transformative experiences, hypothesized mechanisms of action, what these treatments will look like in five years, and much, much more. And before I forget, here are some links to additional readings that we referenced: MacCorquodale and Meehl (1948). Article on Hypothetical Constructs. Rasmussen and Newland (2009). Quantification of the Anti-Punishment Effect in Humans Using the Generalized Matching Equation. Hopkinspsychedelic.org, a clearing house of all the cool research that's being done at JHU. We close with a fun discussion of the concept of impulsivity. In Matt's view, as a psychological construct, the term isn't very useful, and we get into how he came to that conclusion. I have a membership program for the podcast; think of it as a DIY Patreon… It’s been running for a few years now, and it costs the princely sum of $9/month. Members get access to a private FB group in which they are able to get nearly instantaneous access to the videos of these podcast interviews. The best part is that members get the raw feed. That means no ads, and none of the introductory comments. You just get right to the interview. Another cool thing we do is hold Zoom Hangouts with former guests. We do this about 6 times a year, and it works like this: we schedule a Zoom call, a former guest comes on and joins us, and the members have the opportunity to ask them questions directly.
A year ago, my wonderful friend, Nicole, NPT, created a program called "30 Days of Whole Living". I know that stress is slowing me down in my own ideals and practices. I thought it would be encouraging to all of us to talk about a healthy lifestyle today. Nicole has a plan, "7 Days of Whole Living", that helps women make a plan that fits into their lives for healthy rhythms and practices.. Today, we talked about her plan for whole living and what we both do to try to keep ourselves as healthy and strong as possible as a rhythm of life, all the time, every day. The purpose of her own program is to help women and moms, especially, learn different practices of self-care or what both of us call, “Whole. Living”

Joel Glanzberg - the sequel I was fully stoked to have this second chat with Joel Glanzberg where we continue exploring his journey with living systems thinking and working within a regenerative paradigm (after first talking in episode twelve). Same topic yet very different energy as the previous episode with Joel's long-term colleague Carol Sanford. As we discuss Joel is heading to Melbourne in July 2019, where in addition to running some Regenerative Practitioner training he'll be giving a free talk July 17 and a one-day workshop on Regenerating Place July 27 - both in Brunswick, Melbourne. He'll also be tagging along with me to some of my current projects so I look forward to reporting back on those adventures and conversations in due course :-). Check out Regenisis Group here, the Regenerative Practitioner training here, and Joel's personal site Pattern Mind here. Here is the full text from Joel's open letter to the permaculture movement (please share any thoughts you have about this or the episode in a comment - I always so appreciate hearing how this stuff is landing out there): First of all, I want to thank you, not only for your good efforts, time, and energy but for your caring…your caring not only for this living earth but for the people and the beauty of life. Thank you. Many of you may know of my work from the example of Flowering Tree in Toby Hemenway’s excellent book Gaia’s Garden and the video 30 Years of Greening the Desert, others from my regenerative community development work with Regenesis. In any case I know that you share my concerns for the degrading condition of the ecological and human communities of our biosphere and I am writing to you to ask for your help.We are at a crisis point, a crossroads and if we are to turn the corner we need to use everything at our disposal to its greatest effect. My concern is that we are not using the very powerful perspective of permaculture to its greatest potential and that we need to up our game. We know that the living world is calling for this from us.I often feel that permaculture design is like a fine Japanese chisel that is mostly used like a garden trowel, for transplanting seedlings. It can of course be used for this purpose, but is certainly not its highest use.Permaculture Design has often been compared to a martial art such as Aikido because at its heart it is about observing the forces at play to find the “least change for the greatest effect”; a small move that changes entire systems. This is how nature works and is precisely the sort of shortcut we desperately need. The lowest level of any martial art is learning to take a hit well. Yet this is where so much of our energy seems to be directed: setting ourselves and our communities up to be resilient in the face of the impacts of climate change and the breakdown of current food, water, energy, and financial systems. The next level is to avoid the blow, either through dodging, blocking or redirecting it. Much of the carbon farming and other efforts directed toward pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and developing non-carbon sources of energy fall into this category. At their highest expression practitioners track patterns to their source, shifting them before they take form, redirecting them in regenerative directions. This is what is behind principles like “obtain a yield” or “the problem is the solution” and the reason for protracted and thoughtful observation. We learn to read energies and to find the acupuncture-like inoculation or disturbance that changes the manifestation by changing the underlying pattern. Problems are turned into solutions and provide us with yields if we can stop trying to stop or block them. This is the pattern of Regeneration.Every permaculture technique is a small disturbance that shifts the underlying pattern and hence the system. Water-harvesting structures, rotational grazing, chicken tractors, mulching, spreading seed-balls,

About the book: If you’ve been diagnosed with prediabetes, you are by no means alone. 79 million Americans share this diagnosis, and the numbers only seem to be rising. And while we’ve all heard that a healthy diet and exercise can help reverse this disorder, there may be other factors at play in your prediabetes—namely, toxins. Numerous studies have shown that there is a direct link between toxins in our food and type 2 diabetes. In The Prediabetes Detox, primary care physician and naturopathic doctor Sarah Cimperman will show you how to reverse prediabetes by eliminating unwanted toxins from your diet and home. You will learn to balance your blood sugar levels, increase your energy, and end your unhealthy cravings once and for all using a safe, effective at-home cleansing program that is both practical and manageable. By disrupting hormones, altering cells in the pancreas, and interfering with energy production, toxins can cause insulin resistance, fat accumulation, and high blood sugar associated with pre-diabetes. Using the detox regimen and recipes outlined in this book, you will start feeling healthier, have more energy, and stay firmly on the path to conquering this ubiquitous disease. About the author: Sarah Cimperman, ND, is a naturopathic physician and an expert in natural medicine. She received her degree in 2002 from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. NCNM is the oldest accredited college of naturopathic medicine in the United States and trains holistic primary care physicians as practitioners of the most comprehensive of alternative medicine disciplines. Dr. Cimperman is the author of The Prediabetes Detox: A Whole-Body Program to Balance Your Blood Sugar, Increase Energy, and Reduce Sugar Cravings. Her articles and expertise have also been featured on Fox News and Huffington Post and in Natural Health magazine, Whole Living magazine, and the Well Being Journal.
