I was listening to the Tim Ferriss Podcast recently as he interviewed the one and only Seth Godin. Between comments, Tim uttered the metaphor of the duck does all of its work under the surface. I literally had to pause the episode and write out this one! In my last episode, Mission 20/20 Accomplished, I painted a picture of team cleaning companies growing through insurmountable odds and I shared my success in 2020. I don't want anyone to think that we had it easy or growing our cleaning businesses come easy to us. Let's learn from the duck and then come back with the goal of encouraging you and giving you truth! The duck appears to always be in control as it glides across the water. It is cool, calm, and collect without a care in the world. Yet, it gets to where it's trying to go. It does change direction and sometimes glides in circles, but it always gets to where it's trying to go. It's easy to see the duck from the side of the lake and say. "Why can't my life be as easy as the duck? They just find the pond or lake that suits them and simply glide across the surface, stick their head under water for a bite to eat, and chill!" Or what if you're thinking this. "I'm watching and listening to Ken build his second solo cleaning business and it seems like he's a duck. He just magically with total calm gets to his destination. He tripled his profits in 2020 during a pandemic. I guess Ken is just a duck!"You were sitting on the side of the pond looking across the water at the duck. It does look easy from that perspective. My son recently bought the GoPro camera and he can stick it under water and capture incredible video. If your lens is looking at the duck, you see what you see. But if you take a GoPro and point it under the water at the same duck, you will see a different image. You won't recognize the duck. It is far from cool, calm, and collect. You see a duck's bottom and a flurry of webbed feet. That creature looks like he is fighting for his life. His legs are kicking and paddling like crazy. Sometimes the leg paddles forward, sometimes backward, and sometimes stops. But most the time it's swirling and kicking and paddling like crazy. If your perspective of the duck was from the GoPro lens, you would think that life is so hard for the duck. How can ducks  even survive at all!? How will he ever get to where he's going? The lens from the side of the pond is the lens that others see you from, while the lens underwater is the one that you see you through. It goes back to the episode I did on "The Four Windows". The lens from the side of the pond is the first window and the underwater lens is the second window. Let's bring this back to my business growth success in 2020. You've been listening to my podcast and watching me from the side of the pond. I've tried to be vulnerable and transparent so you could get a look from underwater, but it's hard. I am living it and I know just how hard I've been kicking this year. Nothing has come easy. My little webbed feet have been fluttering away for 10 months, many times having no idea which way my legs were taking me. I relied on my faith and worked like it was up to me and prayed like it was up to God. I've been in mastermind and coaching environments where I've been beaten and bruised. My webbed feet have hurt all along the way, yet you've seen me glide from $30,000 to $80,000 in revenue in 10 months of a pandemic, riots, wild fires, political unrest, family issues, illness, and deaths in the family. Are you starting to see yet?Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Howdy, I'm Elliot, published by Elliot Billingsley on January 6, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Hi EA community, I'd like to formally introduce myself to this forum, where I've been lurking for a while but have been too timid to post until now, thanks to the encouragement of some. I first heard about EA through the Tim Ferriss Podcast in 2016. I still remember standing on the ferryboat crossing the Bosphorous while listening to Will MacAskill say things that were incredibly obvious, at least after they were heard. In the couple years that followed, I organized a local EA workshop, attended EAGx Berlin, and flew to San Francisco to attend EAG. I got involved with Students for High-Impact Charity, helping out on the periphery. I enjoyed lively conversation with EA Vancouver. And increased the usage of the phrase 'expected value' in daily conversation. That's about it. That was my EA Life Phase I. Half a decade later, I sat down with my wife and child during a Pentathlon in which every day you ask yourself the question: "What is the Most Important Work I can do today?" All of a sudden, it all came back to me. The most important things I can possibly do have quite clearly been described in EA. So I resolved in early 2022 to buckle up and take EA seriously. I honestly wasn't sure what my best option was, so I went with the most inspiring recent topic on the 80k podcast: Andrew Yang's Forward Party. I basically reached out and got named State Lead.I feel my experience with Forward may be a whole 'nuther post so I'll leave it at that. I also engaged in a lot of other ways, in large part thanks to EA Virtual Programs, which I really appreciate. But there's one person who had a huge role in my transition from an EA sleeper cell to a stupidly engaged one. That's Dr. Ben Smith. I swallowed my Ninja Lurker EA Forum personality (Never posts, always votes strongly) in order to write this post, for a specific reason, which I'll share now. Last fall, I launched a coaching practice with the intention of supporting the EA community. I asked some friends and acquaintances to take a chance and try my coaching out, and thank them very much. I now know my coaching helps people. So If I help EAs, I'm helping better, in theory, right? I want to test this theory! I'm going to EAG next month and even have a special cohort designed for attendees. If you're going to EAG, do consider applying, we'd love to have you. So that's my shameless plug. For any of you still reading, I'd like to say thanky (I'm from Texas, that's kind of how my dad used to say 'thank you'). I hope to write here more and learn in this incredible community. Elliot Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org

Richard Koch, a self-made billionaire and prominent proponent of the 80/20 principle, has written profoundly over the years about the effective application of this approach, also known as the Pareto principle. It is remarkable that someone with such a fortune would take the time to write such in-depth non-fiction. This suggests that he not only understands the principle but also applies it masterfully. A recent interview with him on the Tim Ferriss Podcast impressed me. In BrainCandy I have summarised key insights from that podcast. For anyone returning from holiday fresh and motivated, Koch offers valuable inspiration for a more efficient path to happiness and success. At a time when the AI revolution is upon us with its almost limitless possibilities, a little more 80/20 insight could benefit us all. Personally, I'm looking forward to reading Koch's latest book on my upcoming holiday. Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! In this episode we discuss The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter, and how our modern lifestyle and pursuit of ease might be making us miserable, stressed, and anxious.  We cover a wide range of topics including: The connection between boredom and creativity Misogis and how to discover what you're truly capable of Why you don't necessarily want "less phone" How rucking could be a massive exercise hack The proper "dose" of outdoor, tech-free time And much more. Please enjoy, and make sure to follow Nat, Neil, and Adil on Twitter and share your thoughts on the episode. (4:32) How your eyes and body adjust to virtual reality. In general, your eyes dilate differently when you're using a screen vs. not using a screen.  (8:25) In today's episode, we're diving into The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter. The book is centered around the author's caribou hunt in Alaska to challenge the idea of what comfort means to him. (12:51) Good writing is more about helping explain a concept you're beginning to think about in a way that you haven't been able to conceptualize on your own yet rather than teaching you something brand new. (15:19) Boredom is another theme talked about in the book. We tend to favor a highly comfortable life full of entertainment, and we get uncomfortable when we're bored. However, making your life more comfortable isn't necessarily going to improve it in the long term. (17:59) We live in a world where there is always something you can do so you never have to sit in boredom when you're waiting. Because of this constant need to entertain ourselves, we're losing time that we could be spending processing and crafting new ideas. The more that we can train ourselves to be comfortable in boredom, the more we regain our ability to not be so hyper-anxious and reactive all the time.  (20:56) The connection between boredom and creativity is similar to the idea of rest recovery for working out. You wouldn't work out the same muscle every day without a rest day. We're essentially contracting the attention muscle all day long when we're on our phones all the time and not giving it the recovery time it desperately needs. (23:00) So what's the solution? Let yourself get bored. Rather than thinking “less phone” think “more boredom”. Making space for your thoughts and resetting the baseline. (30:58) What's a sustainable way to get your brain rested regularly and how much outdoors time is recommended each month? (33:13) Misogis are challenges that allow you to reframe your perception of what you're capable of achieving. Each year, it's encouraged that you take on a challenge, one that's really hard and one that is unique where you can't compare yourself to others.  (39:42) From Spartan Races, to pushup challenges, to training in the heat of a Texas summer, Nat, Neil, and Adil reflect on some of the harder things that they've experienced. As a species, we're very capable of doing hard things that we often don't push ourselves hard enough for. (49:00) The author's struggle with alcoholism. Everyone self-medicates differently, whether it's alcohol, conflict, or something more positive. It's a matter of what you choose to fill the space with. (54:01) The language we use to approach things is critical. You can always find a way to enjoy a situation that most people would label as “bad”. (1:02:08) How do you reset from a bad mood or from feeling anxiety? Nat, Neil, and Adil talk about the ways they stay active.  (1:04:54) How much exercise should you do and what's the right amount? The more you can do, the better (of course, without injury and overtraining yourself). (1:09:24) Training yourself for long runs and building up your endurance. (1:11:34) “Western laziness is quite different. It consists of cramming our lives with compulsive activity, so there is no time at all to confront the real issues. This form of laziness lies in our failure to choose worthwhile applications for our energy.”  Filling up our time with things that may or may not be meaningful, but we often don't realize that we're doing it. (1:14:36) When you look back over a long period of time, the days where you're outside of your normal routine is what tends to stick out to you.   (1:19:47) Finding the right amount of novelty to live a happy life. Is it possible to go too far into routine or too far into novelty? (1:23:36) Nat, Neil, and Adil share some of their key takeaways and lessons learned from the book. This includes finding more ways to be uncomfortable, embracing that discomfort, and prioritizing physical activity. (1:31:24) That concludes this episode! We hope you enjoyed it. His 2018 psilocybin abuse liability review recommended placement in Schedule-IV upon potential medical approval. He is Principle Investigator on funded studies investigating psilocybin in the treatment of opioid dependence and PTSD. Beyond psilocybin, in 2011 Dr. Johnson published the first-ever blinded human research showing psychoactive effects of salvinorin A, the active constituent in Salvia divinorum. He has conducted seminal and widely cited research applying behavioral economic principles such as delay discounting and demand analysis to decision making within addiction, drug consumption, and risk behavior. This includes research determining delay discounting to be a fundamental behavioral process underlying addiction across drug classes, using economic demand analysis to determine the roles of nicotine and nonpharmacological factors in the abuse liability tobacco and other nicotine products, and using delay discounting, probability discounting, and demand analysis to understand sexual risk including condom non-use in casual sex situations. He conducted the first research administering cocaine to humans in determining that cocaine increases sexual desire and affects sexual decision making. He has conducted similar research administering methamphetamine and alcohol, examining effects on sexual decision making. He has published studies on drugs across nearly all psychoactive classes, including studies of cocaine, methamphetamine, tobacco/nicotine, alcohol, opioids, cannabis, benzodiazepines, psilocybin, dextromethorphan, salvinorin A, GHB, caffeine, and cathinone analogs compounds (so-called “bath salts”).Dr. Johnson was 2019 President of the Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse Division of the American Psychological Association, and is current President of the International Society for Research on Psychedelics, an organization he founded with colleagues.  I am a listener to the Tim Ferriss Podcast and have been for years. I don't relate with every episode, but some of them really move me to action and inspire me. Here are some examples. Kelly Slater taught me to be humble. Hugh Jackman inspired me to utilize the rowing machine in my workouts! Chris Bosh showed me that my problems aren't that big! In this episode, Elizabeth Gilbert taught me the Art of the Simple No. So many of us struggle with the two-letter word no. It's hard to say. We feel that we need to explain ourselves whenever we decide to use it. Statistically, 32% of all people tested with the DISC Profile are the S-Type for Steadiness. An S-Type person is very loyal, a great listener, easy to talk to, even keel, reliable, and generally tends to be a people-pleaser. Therefore, 1/3 of us out there already have a difficult time saying no. I once heard this and it floored me. "No is a complete sentence." This is exactly what Elizabeth Gilbert is talking about in this clip from the Tim Ferriss Show. The full show is linked in the show notes. I highly recommend the video version available on YouTube so you can see Elizabeth's body posture and gestures as she explains the Simple No. Here's my question. How can you implement this strategy into your life? Would it make your relationships strained? Would it give you more time as you'd be saying no more often? I pondered these questions myself and have been more intentional to place a higher value on my time. I hope you do too. Check out my interview with the CBF Founder, entitled "A Buffalo Charges the Storm with Debbie Sardone". Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Will MacAskill Media for WWOTF - Full List, published by James Aitchison on August 30, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Never before have we had the chance to enjoy so much Will MacAskill. He seems to have been everywhere. What a superb and exhaustive job he and his team have done to promote 'What We Owe The Future.' So far I have counted 16 podcasts, 18 articles and 6 other bits and pieces. I have listed all these below with links and brief comments. Podcast Appearances The 80,000 Hours Podcast with Rob Wiblin. A warm and comprehensive three-hour discussion. Making Sense Podcast with Sam Harris. Harris is strongly supportive, MacAskill particularly inspiring on the sweep of history. Mindscape Podcast with Sean Carroll. Carroll asks questions about utilitarianism, metaethics and population ethics which MacAskill handles well. The Ezra Klein Show Podcast. A fine conversation on long-termism. Klein structures the discusion around ‘Three simple sentences: Future people count. There could be a lot of them. And we can make their lives better.' Good discussions about history - the contingent nature of the abolition of slavery and that certain times have plasticity. Tim Ferriss Podcast. A lively discussion with much humour and several gems from MacAskill. Includes recommendation of Joseph Henrich's 'The Secret of Our Success.' Deep Dive with Ali Abdaal Podcast. A relaxed, friendly and wide-ranging three-hour conversation. Covers a lot of ground including EA psychology and MacAskill's work methods. This is a high-quality YouTube production as well as a podcast and is my favourite among the appearances. Conversations with Tyler Podcast . Tyler Cowan's questioning focuses on the limits of utilitarianism. The Lunar Society Podcast with Dwarkesh Patel. Mainly on the contingency of moral progress. Global Dispatch Podcast with Mark Goldberg. Discussion on longtermism and the United Nations. Goldberg enthusiastic about the UN adopting some longtermist thinking. Modern Wisdom Podcast with Chris Williamson. An accessible discussion of longtermism. Conversations with Coleman with Coleman Hughes Includes population ethics, economic growth and moral change. Daily Stoic Podcast with Ryan Holiday. Mainly on altruism and moral change. Kera Think with Krys Boyd. 30 minutes conversation. Freakanomics Podcast with Steve Levitt. Discussion mainly on the economic themes in WWOTF, which MacAskill handles very well. 1a Podcast on NPR. David Gurn discussion on EA as a life changing philosophy. Includes comments from Sofya Lebedeva and Spencer Goldberg. Ten Percent Happier Podcast with Dan Harris. A warm discussion on donations, EA and longtermism. There are transcripts for the podcasts by Wiblin, Carroll, Klein, Cowan, Patel, Goldberg and Levitt. Articles and Book Reviews The New Yorker: The Reluctant Prophet of Effective Altruism by Gideon Lewis-Kraus. A fine 10,000-word article profiling MacAskill and setting out the history of the EA movement. The author spent several days with his subject and covers MacAskill as an individual and the ideas and dynamics of the movement. MacAskill comments on the article in this Twitter Thread Time: Want to Do More Good? This Movement might have the Answer by Naina Bajekal . A beautifully written and inspiring profile of MacAskill and the EA movement. Vox: How Effective Altruism Went from a Niche Movement to a Billion-Dollar Force by Dylan Matthews. A well-informed and thoughtful article on EA's evolution by an EA insider. Wired: The Future Could be Blissful - If Human's Don't Go Extinct First.  It's time for another Tim Ferriss Podcast reference. Oh my. David Blaine the magician was such an entertaining 55 minutes!  There were so many actionable words of wisdom. The one that got me to stop and listen again was this one. David told the story when he was a young magician doing street magic. He was in an airport and he got some bags mixed up because they all look the same. He said I think you've got my bag to a nearby traveler. One of the guys in a business suit said, "No I think that guy over there in the in the white limo has your bag." David had no family left after his single mom passed away. He had nothing to lose, walked over to the white limousine, and knocked on the window. The window rolled down. It was Iron Mike Tyson holding up his fist in the prime of the Tyson era! Iron Mike said, "Hey man, what do you want?" Mike Tyson ended up letting David into the limo and they went back to Mike's hotel where David did a bunch of cool magic tricks. Mike was thoroughly entertained and gave him some life-changing advice. He said. "You know I wasn't supposed to be the heavyweight champion of the world. I was too short. My reach was too short as well. But you know... when you have nothing else to lose, you have everything to gain." I just meditated on that for a while as I was vacuuming an Animal Hospital floor and sucking up gobs of hair. When you have nothing else to lose, you have everything to gain. It's the same concept as hitting rock bottom. A lot of addicts and people with a lot of distress have to hit the worst point in the life before they can truly get better. I know people that start side hustles but yet they never make it work. Do you know why? They have everything to lose and very little to gain. They may have a 6-figure full time job with great perks, but they want freedom. It's hard for them to make it. I love the Rocky franchise. Look at Clubber Lang vs Rocky Balboa in fight 1. Clubber had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Rocky had very little to gain and everything to lose. When I was in my first year of cleaning, I was David Blaine or Iron Mike Tyson or Clubber Lang. I had everything against me and everything to gain. I had already lost it all. I had no where to go but up. This motivated me beyond belief and I worked my tail off for scraps. I kept doing it over and over and over until we started getting some traction. If I go to the other end of my first cleaning business, we had a cushy set up in a nice rental house in a nice cul-de-sac. We made good money and I only cleaned 2 days per week. I had a lot to lose and not much to gain (in my mind). The truth of the matter was this. We weren't making it. I should have kept the same intensity throughout my business instead of letting up. I love this advice from Mike Tyson. Where are you at? Do you have nothing to lose and everything to gain? Go hard. Fight your fears and win. Or do you have everything to lose and little to win? This is dangerous as it causes complacency. If you stay where you're at, you will eventually lose what you have. Trust me!

But first…   The 2 Components of Quality Sleep   For many years I found myself frustrated and confused by my seemingly chronic state of fatigue despite getting the requisite 7-8 hours of sleep.   What I found for me personally was 1/3 of the sleep equation was quality of sleep.   2/3 was the quality of sleep.   What I needed to first understand were the 2 components of quality sleep*:   *(Descriptions below from the Oura Ring sleep tracking app).   Deep Sleep: Deep sleep is the most restorative and rejuvenating sleep stage During deep sleep your muscles grow and repair Immune system is refreshed Brain flushes out toxins Usually, you get more deep sleep during the early stages of your sleep On average, adults spend 15-20% of total sleep time in deep sleep This % decreases with age over time   REM (Rapid Eye Movement Sleep): REM sleep is associated with dreaming, memory consolidation and creativity REM plays an important role in re-energizing your mind and body Typically, you get more REM sleep during the latter half of your sleep On average, the optimal amount for healthy adults starts from 1.5 hours but slightly decreases with age   The punchline was, I had no way of calibrating the quality of my sleep, but I suspected it was trash (turns out, it was).   So, when I learned how to impact the quality of my sleep – and how to measure it with the Oura Ring – naturally my sleep quality increased.   I started feeling more refreshed in the morning, fewer dips in the middle of the day, and fewer crash-landings early in the evening.      The 10 Practices to Enhance the Quality of Your Sleep     #1. Align Your Sleep Schedule with Your Circadian Rhythm (your body's natural sleep cycle)   In Dr. Matthew Walker's book Why We Sleep, he outlines the two biological forces that dictate when your body feels the need to sleep:   Your Circadian Rhythm “Sleep Pressure” via adenosine (more on this in best practice #9 below)   Your genetics determine your circadian rhythm.    In simplest terms, you're either a night owl or a morning person.   If your lifestyle is designed and aligned to support your circadian rhythms, life is good.   If not, it can have tragic consequences.   For example, in Why We Sleep, Dr. Walker talks about how night owl's get the serious short end of the stick based on society's value on “early to bed early to rise.”   Turns out night owls, in an effort to keep up with the societal norms, suffer from higher rates of anxiety, depression and stress related illnesses than morning people. Why? Because they go to bed later, get up earlier, sacrifice quantity and quality of sleep. Over the long haul this has serious consequences on physical, emotional and mental well-being.   #2. Establish a 90-Minute Bed Time Window   Your body wants to know when it's “sleep time” and when it's “wake time.”   If you're going to bed at dramatically different times every night (ie 9:00pm, 1:00am, 10:30pm), your body gets confused.   It eventually rebels and makes you tired when you're trying to do work, and awake when you're trying to sleep.   Establishing a regular 90-minute window – mine is 10:00pm to 11:30pm – which you can aim to hit 4-5 nights a week can train your body to naturally start to wind down on a more consistent basis.     #3. No Food in Your Last 1-2 Hours Before Sleep   It's as simple as this: if your body is expending energy breaking down the rack-o-ribs you just pounded, it's not able to invest its energy in deep sleep repairing your brain and flushing toxins.   Further, if you're eating sugary stuff – wine, ice cream or heavy carbs that get converted to glucose – the sugar spike will also kick you out of quality sleep.   Do your best to eat lighter at night, and to have your last bite of food     #4. Reduce Liquids Last 60-90 Minutes Before Bed.   If you're like me, drinking water before bed is a surefire way to wakeup 2-3 times during the evening. That always knocks me out of deep and REM sleep cycles.   Instead, I hydrate for my last time about 90 minutes before bed, allowing me to sleep straight through the night.   First thing I do when I wake up is drink a quart of lemon water to hydrate myself.     #5. No Screens in the Last 30 Minutes (Ideally 60-90 minutes)   I have 3 years worth of sleep data on my Oura Ring and the numbers don't lie:   On the nights when I'm doing 2 hour Zoom calls between 7-9:00pm, I get 33-50% less deep sleep than on the evenings when I'm not blasting my eye sockets with blue light. Power down the devices in the last 30-90 minutes of your night to increase your odds of getting higher quality sleep.   You can also consider Blue Light Blocker Glasses.     #6. Get a Sleep Tracking Device to Monitor Your Sleep Quality   In my opinion, one of the best investments you could ever make to your long term physical, mental and emotional well-being is in a high quality sleep tracking device.   It's critical to know which of your habits and behaviors are impacting the quality of your sleep.   My recommendation is the Oura Ring, which is $299.   While not inexpensive, I like to think about the impact on the years and decades of my future well-being (ie avoiding the time and financial costs of stress related illnesses).   It's the most respected sleep tracking device on the market (as endorsed by the NBA and used by many of the branches of the US Special Forces).   Note: I am not compensated by Oura in any way.   #7. Sleep in Cool Conditions   According to the NY Times:   Studies have found that in general, the optimal temperature for sleep is quite cool, around 60 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. For some, temperatures that fall too far below or above this range can lead to restlessness.   You can access the article here.   Also, I purchased the ChiliPad, which is like a heating blanket…but in reverse.   I was an over-heater at night, waking up 3-4 times a night in sweat. After buying the Chilipad, I sleep cool throughout the night.     #8. Sleep in Blackout Darkness   To get my full night of sleep, I typically wake at 6:30am. Where I live, the sun rises somewhere around 5:30-5:45am.   If I allowed the sun to wake me up, I'd shortchange 30-60 minutes of my later stage sleep cycle…which is where REM sleep resides.   Some people will install blackout curtains in their room.   I prefer a sleep mask like this $10 version on Amazon.     #9. Caffeine: Educate Yourself on How it Effects Your Sleep Quality   I'm a HUGE coffee guy and that's not changing anytime soon.   But I'm also very well-educated on the impacts of caffeine half-life on sleep quality.   In episode #520 of the Tim Ferriss Podcast, Michael Pollan talks about how the quarter-life of caffeine is 12 hours.   Meaning, if you had a cup of coffee at noon, ¼ of that caffeine is still in your system.   The sleep experts agree that this will mess with the quality of your sleep, specifically deep sleep.   Going back to Why We Sleep by Dr Matthew Walker, the two biological forces that dictate when your body feels the need to sleep:   Your Circadian Rhythm “Sleep Pressure” via adenosine   “Sleep pressure” is caused by a chemical named adenosine.   Here's the crash course on adenosine: From the moment you wake up, your body is producing adenosine The more adenosine that builds up, the sleepier you feel (hence the sleep pressure) Caffeine, however, blocks the adenosine receptor sites, so the adenosine has nowhere to go…but it remains in your system Caffeine has a long half-life (meaning, it takes 5-6 hours to eliminate half of the caffeine in your system) So, if you're drinking caffeine late in the day, you'll have a full day's build-up of adenosine but your body is still breaking down the caffeine   So what do I do about this? I finish my caffeine by 9:30-10:00am.   I know I'm still processing caffeine when I go to sleep, but I'm getting enough deep sleep and love my coffee enough to be cool with the tradeoff ;-)   I also do a quarterly caffeine detox.   Meaning, I'll take a 7-14 day hiatus from caffeine to flush my system of caffeine and all the adenosine that'd been built up in my system.     #10. Read Why We Sleep by Dr. Matthew Walker   Listen, if one of the most important factors for your short and long term physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being is the quality of your sleep…   …shouldn't you invest a few hours into educating yourself on one of the most well-respected pieces of literature on the subject?   If you liked Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, you'll enjoy Why We Sleep.     -DQ

Joe Walton, Cofounder and Managing Partner of London-based Fight or Flight, a dynamic B2B media company helping brands raise the pulse and give people goosebumps, joins Bold Founder, Caleb Parker, to discuss the challenges of growing a business during a lockdown, benefits of remote and why he plans to have an office for his team post pandemic. Enterprise companies make all the headlines, but they employ just 40% of the UK population. 60% of UK employees work for SMEs (small to medium sized businesses). It's time SMEs like Fight or Flight get some airtime.  Joe Walton has a “Challenge the status quo” mindset. He says “building a business used to be synonymous with having an office - not anymore.” "Virtual meetings level the playing field for new companies when pitching" and remote working has enabled Joe to hire senior talent who he wouldn't have considered in a pre-pandemic world. But, Joe still believes the office has tremendous value and will be an important tool for his company's business growth. In this episode Caleb and Joe talk about challenges of establishing company culture, how to engage team members about workplace, testing flexible work policies and how workplace brand plays a role in deciding where to work. The office helps with learning, training and mentoring On return to the office, it will be important that everybody is in at the same time to invest in the culture of the team, whilst retaining flexibility of working from home. The feeling of comdadarie is strengthened when everyone is together When recruiting new candidates for roles, potential talent will gravitate towards the organisations that correspond to their values and the way they want to work Flexibility is key Businesses looking for real estate space value flexibility, shorter lease terms to accommodate team growth Brand has a huge role in deciding on a workplace Brand is not just a logo Brand is intrinsically wound up in the space, the ethos, the experience and the community within the building The workplace you choose says something about you and your brand In commercial real estate right now, there is a much more promiscuous group of customers, who are happy to experiment and happy to try new things The old model of signing a long-term lease and thinking you can sit back as a landlord and just collect cheques for the next 10 to 15 years is over. It's very much hands-on, staying close to the ground with your customer, making sure that you're providing with any evolving your experience with their needs and their desires as they grow, otherwise someone else is going to win them over. In this solo episode, I ran through some of the best ideas from my "Notes" app. Whenever I find an interesting point or lesson from someone way smarter than me, I make a note of it in the app. So I wanted to break down what the idea is, my interpretation of it, and how to put it into action. The 6 ideas I covered: 1) "Emotions are value-neutral. That is, I can be happy for great reasons and I can be happy for terrible reasons. I can be anxious for great reasons and I can be anxious for terrible reasons. The value of the emotion is in the reason for the emotion, not in the emotion itself." - Mark Manson, Author (3:54) 2) (On writing jokes) "If you trim too much fat, you lose the flavor." - Andrew Schultz, Comedian (8:33) 3) "You have to worry some. But after the 18th lashing against yourself, you have to ask "is this useful?" Not: 'I am angry.' Instead: 'There is anger.'" - Dan Harris, on the Tim Ferriss Podcast (18:34) 4) "Over Productivity —> Complacency. Hyperproductive mornings lead to complacent afternoons." - Not sure. (20:44) 5) "True wealth = The health of me and my family. Never feeling rushed." - Khe Hy, radreads.co (28:45) 6) "The problem is... sincerity is not cool. Sincerity does not entertain. Sincerity is lame. It's also incredibly easy to criticize or show to be hypocritical." - Mark Manson, Author (39:52) Connect With Matt: [Free] 30-Day Ultimate Physique Development Manual: https://bit.ly/UltimatePhysiqueDevelopment Hire Matt For Coaching: https://mattmcleod.org/online-coaching Instagram: @mattmcleod6 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/mattmcleod6 Website: https://mattmcleod.org **PS: If you could rate and review the podcast, it would mean the world to me and it would help get the word out to others just like us so we can continue building this amazing, one-of-a-kind community.** ---- Produced by: David Margittai | In Post Media Website: https://www.inpostmedia.com Email: david@inpostmedia.com Social: @_margittai © 2021 Matt McLeod

I was listening to the Tim Ferriss Podcast recently as he interviewed the one and only Seth Godin. Between comments, Tim uttered the metaphor of the duck does all of its work under the surface. I literally had to pause the episode and write out this one! In my last episode, Mission 20/20 Accomplished [Kenny add link], I painted a picture of team cleaning companies growing through insurmountable odds and I shared my success in 2020. When this book came out in 2009, everyone was going wild over it, and when it was re-released in 2019 with current information, people went wild all over again. And with good reason! This is a great book for teaching the fundamentals of living a rich life, not just financially but in every possible way. You’re going to hear about how he is giving in this challenging economy, how you can pivot as a business, what to expect to come, how long this will last, and how you can create products and make money out of any expertise that you have.   Question Highlights:   Why didn’t the advice of most financial experts make sense to you? What’s your message to the financial gurus that want people to cut back? Why do you restrict anyone with credit card debt from joining your programs? What is your definition of rich today? What is your take on what we are facing over the next 3 months as an economy? What should most solopreneurs and small business owners do right now? How do we pivot? What is Earnable and who is that platform for? What is your business doing to stay alive? Why is generosity so important to you?   Guest Bio: Ramit Sethi, author of the New York Times bestseller I Will Teach You To Be Rich, has become a financial guru to millions of readers in their twenties, thirties, and forties. He started his website, iwillteachyoutoberich.com, as a Stanford undergraduate in 2004, and he now hosts over a million readers per month on his blog, newsletter, and social media. Sethi grew up in Sacramento, the son of Indian immigrant parents who taught him the art of negotiating—his father once spent five days negotiating with a car dealer, only to walk away over a set of floor mats. He wasn’t the smartest kid in his class, but he loved building systems, which ultimately earned him over $200,000 in scholarships, which he used to get bachelor’s and master’s degrees in technology and psychology at Stanford. His understanding of human behavior and money led to him creating innovative solutions in self-development. Ramit and his team of dozens of employees build premium digital products about personal finance, entrepreneurship, psychology, careers, and personal development for top performers. The IWT community includes 1 million monthly readers, 400,000 newsletter subscribers, and 35,000 premium customers. He has written about personal finance for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, and been interviewed on dozens of media outlets including NPR, ABC News, and CNBC, and popular podcasts like The Tim Ferriss Podcast.   Follow me on social media @ChrisWHarder on Instagram and check out www.ForTheLoveOfMoney.com

If you have been looking for ways to find more joy in your life and make better choices, this episode is for you! Author and entrepreneur, Tyler Lewke, joins us today to talk about his life and how he has made choices to increase his joy- and how you can increase yours too! Tyler love’s one thing the most- moving people. Their thinking, their hearts, their minds, their points of view and perspectives. Tyler is a son, dad, partner, business guy, and he also runs a Buddhist temple. Clearly, he is a dynamic person! He is obsessed with helping others integrate their inner life and outer life so they can find their joyful life. He is the author of “Empty Empty Happy Happy” and his latest book “Happy With, Happy Without” will be released soon. "I believe there is only one purpose of a goal, and the purpose of a goal is to define your behavior in the present moment. And so I do spend time getting clear about how I want to feel.” “So that’s been really beneficial to me is figuring out how I want to feel and then what are the steps I need to put in place in order to achieve that.” “I’m really concerned about our goal-oriented culture, caring about the wrong definition of a goal. And so it makes it like we are in pursuit of things and objects verses behaviors. And I think that the more we can pursue noble behavior, the faster we will have that joyful life that we’re all, I think, universally seeking.” In this episode, you will hear: - Why Tyler prefers pursuing joy and not happiness (and the difference between the two) - His background and the struggles that he overcame - How to pursue joy and choose it on a daily basis Thank you so much for listening! Do you know the most important part your kid’s education process? In this week’s podcast Billy & Joy discuss one guy’s opinion that the best education focuses on just two things. Check out the quote below and decide if you agree! Seth Godin quote “ Sooner or later parents have to take responsibility for putting their kids into a system that is indebting them and teaching them to be cogs in an economy that doesn’t want cogs anymore. Parents get to decide. I’m a huge fan of public school … But from 3 to 10 those kids are getting homeschooled, and they’re either getting homeschooled watching the Flintstones or they’re getting homeschooled in learning something useful. And I think we need to teach kids two things: one, how to lead, and two, how to solve interesting problems. There are plenty of countries on earth where people are willing to be obedient and work harder for less money than us. So we cannot out-obedience the competition. Therefore we have to out lead or out solve the other people … who want whatever is scarce. The way you teach your kid to solve interesting problems is to give them interesting problems to solve. And then, don’t criticize them when they fail. Kids aren’t stupid. If they get in trouble every time they try to solve an interesting problem, they’ll just go back to getting an A by memorizing what’s in the textbook … We don’t need to have them spend a lot of time getting good grades so they can get into a famous college, because famous colleges don’t work anymore. Famous colleges don’t work anymore. The point is, is there an entity that will have trouble living without you when you seek to earn a living? Because if there is, you’ll be able to make a living. If on the other hand you’re waiting in the placement office for someone to pick you, you will be persistently undervalued. “ Talk about this: What are practical ways we can get our kids to practice leadership? What are my tendencies that might undermine their leadership process? What are interesting problem solving skills we can give our kids this week? What are my tendencies that might undermine their problem-solving process? Flashback to my first podcast!  Powerful Questions w/Jenner The Quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions that you ask. In each episode, Jenner offers a question for you to connect with your own truth. Today’s question is: What is the Most Important Thing to You?   On the surface, this question appears simple and most people have a knee-jerk response. However, this is a perfect example of why I tell my listeners and life-coaching clients to stay with the question. I’ve found that people first, knee-jerk response is rarely ever what the most important thing in their life is true.   I was recently listening to an episode of the Tim Ferris podcast featuring Debbie Millman.  For decades, Millman had thought that the most important thing for her was making it as a designer. But after some self-reflection, she realized that living in Manhattan actually turned out to be a priority that was driving her life. She found herself living in a “decrepit” and “deplorable” little apartment to make this happen.    The answer to this question often changes over time. That’s because I’m not asking, “What is your life’s purpose?” I’m asking you to dive deep on the factors that hold the most sway over your life.   This question became really important for me over the past few years as my husband and I have been on a fertility journey together. At that time I would have said the most important thing to me was “to have a family.” However, when I stuck with the question I came to realized that the more accurate answer would be “to be a stay-at-home mom with a career I love.” Staying with the question has lead me to the best career of my life,  enrolling the help of a nutritionist and opening up a conversation about adoption.   Now, go get BIG!   Links♥   Tim Ferriss Podcast wth Debbie Millman    Debbie Millman    #1 Podcast//Discover Who You Truly Are Free Meditation  Jenner Linden’s Website and Instagram The Wild Ones Website and Instagram Free Awakening Call with Jenner Music provided by Bensound

No one ever grows by staying comfortable their whole life. Life is challenging. It is supposed to be. The best things in life are usually the hardest to get. That’s okay though. Push. If you’re in the gym, push for the extra reps. This will only make you a better athlete, person, employee, sibling, or spouse. You will not grow if you do not challenge yourself. Where there is pain, there is likely going to be some to gain. Even though you may not enjoy it in the moment, realize the best is yet to come and this is all part of the process. In order to do this, you can have the people in life that motivate you, but you have to have the discipline to get it done.Hosts: Ryan Gardner and Nik HallResources:-Joe Rogan Experience #1212: David Goggins [podcast]-Tim Ferriss Podcast #310: Hurry Up and Fail — Tim Kennedy [podcast]-Jocko Willink [Instagram]-Fight Club - Chuck Palahniuk [book or movie]Connect & Subscribe:Website: earnedeffort.comInstagram: instagram.com/earnedeffortFacebook: facebook.com/EarnedEffortTwitter: twitter.com/EarnedEffortEmail: hello@earnedeffort.comSubscribe and listen on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Overcast, Google Play, Spotify, or YouTubeLeave a review on Apple PodcastsFollow Your Hosts:Nik’s Instagram: instagram.com/nikolashallRyan’s Instagram: instagram.com/RyanGardnerCRyan's Goodreads: goodreads.com/RyanGardnerC

In part two of the 300th episode of The Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast Live! Your host, Rob Moore shares his own thoughts on this milestone episode and the lessons learnt along the way. Rob has interviewed a roster of millionaires, inspirational individuals and notable guests. Tune in today, to hear an explosive lightning Q&A round and Progressive Properties manager of innovation and head of Progressive Publishing, interview with the Disruptive Entrepreneur himself, Rob Moore. Listen now, to hear the behind the scenes insights from the UK's number one business podcast. KEY TAKEAWAYS Thom: How does it feel now we've hit 300 episodes? Rob: Bring on 500! podcasters like Joe Rogan have over a thousand episodes and I want to reach that. Podcasts are hard to measure and difficult to track, but it's all of the side benefits and people I've met along the way, the friends I've made, and the amazing things we've done. We've interviewed some great guests and even launched a podcast agency off the back of The Disruptive Entrepreneur and that's done over £500,000 in the last few months. We've now hit around 1.2million subscribers and it feels really good. Thom: What made you start The Disruptive Entrepreneur when you did? I should have started it earlier. I was listening to podcasts about two years before I started The Disruptive Entrepreneur and in property most people have read or listened to ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad' by Robert Kiyosaki, and at the time there was ‘Rich Dad Radio' and Tim Ferris's podcast ‘The Tim Ferriss Podcast' and it inspired me to get started. Thom: Is the podcast what you envisaged it would be now or has it changed over the years? Rob: It's grown its own legs and developed over time. We've learnt a lot from our fans and that's where Rob's Rants and the Caffeine Cast came from. To begin with, I just wanted to give people creative information and an uncensored outlet to say what I wanted. Thom: What does Disruptive mean to you? Rob: Disruptive means finding a unique way to solve a problem and to serve people. Surprising people so they don't get bored or predict your next move. To innovate your market, staff and industry before someone else does. To never be complacent or blindsided by external factors. To control your own factors, to be unique, individual and to control your own narrative. BEST MOMENTS “If you have a good idea, sit on it for three months and if it's still nagging at you, you really want to do it.” “If you're the first you're often the one that fails” “We believe in not editing people and providing information led implementable granular content” “Podcasts are about creating a relationship between you and the listener” “One of the greatest experiences in my life is meeting cool and interesting people” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ https://robmoore.com/podcast/ The Disruptive Entrepreneur Community ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor and property educator. Dom DeLuise, celebrity fat man (and five of clubs), has been implicated in the following unseemly acts in my mind’s eye: He has hocked a fat globule of spittle (nine of clubs) on Albert Einstein’s thick white mane (three of diamonds) and delivered a devastating karate kick (five of spades) to the groin of Pope Benedict XVI (six of diamonds). Michael Jackson (king of hearts) has engaged in behavior bizarre even for him. He has defecated (two of clubs) on a salmon burger (king of clubs) and captured his flatulence (queen of clubs) in a balloon (six of spades). Rhea Perlman, diminutive Cheers bartendress (and queen of spades), has been caught cavorting with the seven-foot-seven Sudanese basketball star Manute Bol (seven of clubs) in a highly explicit (and in this case, anatomically improbable) two-digit act of congress (three of clubs). In this episode of Made You Think, Neil and Nat discuss Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer. It is a fun book episode about how Joshua Foer came from nowhere to win the US memory championship with the challenge and coaching of Ed Cook. In the book Josh shows how to train our brain memory “muscle” and remember everything. We cover a wide range of topics, including: Why and how poetry, religion, and epics are interconnected because of memory Mnemonic techniques to remember numbers, names, cards, everything How to hack our brain to “live longer” Incredible memory stats How to impress your crush and make your dates memorable And much more. Please enjoy, and be sure to grab a copy of Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer! Until books became affordable, there were no easy means to record and keep information. We had to use our brains and information was passed down orally. There is no need of crazy photographic memory or some innate ability, but just training the "muscle". 7:50 – How many phone numbers do you remember? If you don't have to struggle to remember it, you'll not remember it. For efficiency your body doesn't want to do anything more than needed. Poetry and religion and epics are connected to memory training. 11:20 – The story of how Josh learnt the techniques of extreme memory. First technique: remembering names. Associating name sounds with a vivid image. Remembering not westernized names. What names can you remember with these images? Nailing down in front of a Playstation. A lion's son being chased by an gnat. A wizard dealing cards to Freud. When introducing someone to your friends, name your friends a lot so the new comer can remember their names. 19:04 – Practicing these techniques on Twitter or LinkedIn. Challenges in the competition. Remembering participants' attributes in a fake dinner, cards, string of numbers, and a poem. 20:33 – Second technique. Chunking. Remembering in chunks is easier than in smaller bits. In reduces the pieces of information. Example: string of 12 numbers chunked into the two big surprise attacks on American soil. Combining large chunks numbers into bigger images. Keeping the order of numbers by keeping a path to your memory palace. 25:41 – The time you need to dedicate each day is pretty small compared to its ROI. Remembering cards by associating 3 of each each time. These tactics were used for a long long time, even thousands of years ago. The importance of context. A big part of why this works is because we are good at remembering things in context but not when it's random information. Chessmasters examples. 31:03 – Increased perceived longevity. Nuances and quantity of experiences increases perceptual time. Life seems to speed up as we get older just because life gets less memorable, more repetitive. Monotony collapses time and novelty unfolds it. Downside of the idea of flow. Time experience is based on what we can remember. 37:15 – Tips to make a date memorable. Tips for planning parties. Plan 3 phases of a party, for example move the party in different rooms, different drinks, and change activities. It will feel like a longer party even if it took the same amount of time. It's kind of narrative fallacy used to our advantage. 41:05 – Memory images. Creating images for everything. Our brain prefers visual information and novelty. Collect numbers wandering in your house. The funnier, the looter, the more bizarre images, the better. Our brain takes 20% of our energy consumption. We forget dreams because our brain thinks it's junk data. 44:26 – Make images dirty and sexual. Use multiple senses too. Include smells, feelings, multi-sensory experiences. How we can remember songs even if we don't listen them for 10 years. Write your feelings and thoughts at the end of each book you read. Very useful if you are getting into speed reading or want to remember what the book was about, snippents will give you cues to remember it. Nat's book notes are efficient to remember core parts of a book. Neil's tactic to give attention to books’ concepts. 50:53 – Repetition. Nat's 3 layers strategy: pull out all important sections, bold important parts of sections, then highlight the most important part of the bolded part. Layer 4: adding a summary. 53:02 – The Method of Loci. Using memory images based on your environment. If you have to remember a speech, visualize the points you want to talk about at specific places. You can remember your speech by looking at specific parts of the auditorium or walking through the stage. Useful to remember dance movements. Advantages of the memory palace vs the Loci method. 55:59 – Remembering numbers. The PAO system: Person, Action, Object. First, associate an image to numbers going from 0 to 99. Remembering a 6 digit number can be done mixing the person of the first pair of digits, with the action of the second, and object of the third. 1:01:00 – Tangents. Memory training companies. 1:03:20 – Learning advice. How to get further the OK plateau. Experiments on memorizing. How the early University experiments on memory looked like. Reaching the peak of memory training is not about the hours put in, but the quality of those hours. During the first phase, known as the “cognitive stage,” you’re intellectualizing the task and discovering new strategies to accomplish it more proficiently. During the second “associative stage,” you’re concentrating less, making fewer major errors, and generally becoming more efficient. Finally you reach what Fitts called the “autonomous stage,” when you figure that you’ve gotten as good as you need to get at the task and you’re basically running on autopilot. You could call it the “OK plateau”, the point at which you decide you’re OK with how good you are at something, turn on autopilot, and stop improving. Breaking up the OK plateau. When you deliberately want to get better at something, you may get initially worse. Sometimes you need to go down to get at a higher point later. It's not enjoyable in the short term. You have to deliberately make yourself uncomfortable to break the plateau. Changing variables to find where the weaknesses are. The 10.000 hours rule. 1:14:18 – Other books and resources about memory training. 1:18:48 – Get the story part reading the book! Do you see a future where that is possible and how do you stop that? 35:20 – Have you read Sovereign Individual? 35:32 – In Sovereign Individual there is an idea that as wealth disparity grows, eventually the elite will separate themselves from the rest of the population. Do you see any concern for that? 38:54 – Will we see countries trying to attract citizens to move and will VAT be a factor in that? 39:59 – How bad would it have to be before more people left? What’s the threshold? 41:24 – Do you think that Trump getting elected is helpful to someone who’s not a career politician, helping them get elected in 2020? 45:40 – Has communicating a very statistics and quantitative approach been a struggle for you when speaking to audiences? So much of politics is about the emotional appearance. How have you adapted to that? 54:09 – Extra Question that we didn’t get to ask - Would adoption of a VAT accelerate a crypto economy and how does that change the estimates of how we would pay for UBI? Show Topics 1:11 – The main objections to UBI are : How can we afford it? Will it turn people into less happy, lazy wastrels? Won’t it cause mass inflation? 1:44 – Universal Basic Income is affordable but we’ve poorly managed budgets in the past and there is stigma around hoarding money. We need to believe in sense of abundance and possibility. Culture and mental barriers and block around hoarding money. 3:28 – Cost of UBI in the US would cost $2 Trillion. It would be $1000 per month given to each person, we call it the Freedom Dividend. It would cause economy growth due to increased taxes and spending. 4:27 – Benefits of UBI. We would get more out than we put in. It reduces health issues, crime and has many secondary benefits to putting the money into the hands of the people. 05:57 – How the money would be spent. The wealthy vs the majority. VAT taking from those who spend the most and given to the bottom 80%. Money sitting in bank accounts causes a stagnant economy. 07:27 – Basic Income as both appealing Liberals and Conservatives. Most people seem to think it is impossible, shows decline of society and lack of faith in democracy. 10:21 – Video games and the growth of the eSports economy. Parents as an early form of UBI for large groups of young people. Will additional income cause people to withdraw into games more or will it allow them to participate in real life more? 11:03 – Lack of appealing opportunities for men in the real world. The digital world as the cheapest form of entertainment, more money equals more options and less time spent in the digital world. 12:05 – Games used as a sense of accomplishment and emotional highs, which can wear off over time. UBI will give opportunities at a time when people are looking for something new. 13:24 – Social credits as a socially constructive gamification of the real world. Gaming impulse transferred into the real world and other outlets. Current philanthropic trials are small by comparison and Government could apply resources. 20:02 – Yang’s plans as president. Government currently too risk averse. Electing a president with UBI as a main objective would be a huge step towards it. Congress people would have to listen to their constituents. 24:08 – Nothing is as effective as cash to people when talking about control of programs. People losing faith in government programs. Basic jobs as a bad idea, no long term value in unproductive work as more jobs get automated. Unproductive jobs lead to unhappy people. Instead find out what work is inside of each person. The idea of Basic jobs doesn’t value people. Valuing people as stakeholders and not serves. 30:10 – People heading towards reliance on the government. UBI as better way, gives people a higher-level of integrity and self-determination. Any government change to UBI would cause riots and is still a powerful check on the government. Doing nothing will lead to bloodshed and revolution. Antitrust laws and harm to consumers. 32:38 – Defining human success independent of economic or monetary measures. Wealth getting concentrated in ever smaller pools is bad for all businesses. Riots in America looking more likely, how can we prevent that instead of waiting. 37:54 – Enlightened self-interest and lifting others up. Renouncing citizenship for tax reasons. Ad campaigns trying to encourage economic migration. VAT not a powerful factor. 40:17 – Lack of entrepreneurial migrants. Electing Andrew Yang would be a compelling message to immigrants. The opposite of Donald Trump is an Asian guy that likes facts and figures. Clear message through recent politics, people are desperate for change. 44:54 – Using Universal Based Income as a lever to address a crisis. The road to the 2020 election. Challenge of evolving as a person over time. Humanity First and One For Humanity project. Reduction of labor as a central role, the rise of automation and an economy that values people first. 48:36 – Possibility of a follow-up episode. Listeners, send in any questions. Next time we could dive deeper on Venture For America and his other policies. Check out his site Yang2020.com. “It’s this denial of death that is our main psychological challenge.” In this episode of Made You Think, Neil and I discuss The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker. It’s a phenomenal book on how our fear of mortality is the core for our psychological disturbances, our motivation for taking action in life and behaving in certain ways. We cover a wide range of topics, including: The necessity for a heroic purpose to motivate us and the current lack of it Why we do things and behave in certain ways The fear of death being the core of our psychological disturbances How we often take comfort in trivial things to give us the illusion of control Death being a prime motivation for us to do things and take action Breaking down our need for certainty and control in life Balancing the need to reflect with the need to experience And much more. Please enjoy, and be sure to grab a copy of The Denial of Death and to check out Nat’s Notes on the book! Also, some discussion on time, various aspects of human nature, and the differences between everyone’s perspective. 8:49 - Becoming conscious of what we’re doing to earn our feeling of heroism to find out that it’s the main self-analytic problem of life. Some thoughts on this and discussion on how most of the youth today do not have some big heroic ideal that they’re pushing towards. 11:10 - Some more thoughts on the lack of heroic purpose and the lack of meaning in our lives today. How this is related to motivation and depression, as well. “If you don’t have a propelling narrative for what you’re doing with your life, then you will naturally be depressed and feel like your life doesn’t matter.” 12:53 - Tearing down our heroes to give ourselves a sense of control and this happening in society. Some examples of this and then some discussion on mentor/mentee relationships, 16:26 - Discussion on the terror of death and various examples of this theme throughout cultures, societies, and religions. Also how our fear of death influences our view of the world. “It’s this denial of death that is our main psychological challenge.” 19:13 - The problem of us often inventing reasons for anxiety when there are none, some examples of people doing this, and how this relates to our mortality. Also, how we should try to not waste energy worrying about something that may happen, and instead saving that energy for when it might happen. “We all just sort of invent these anxieties and reasons to worry, and they seem really important and serious to us, but to outsiders, they usually seem trivial.” 23:35 - How we need the fear of mortality to motivate us to do things. Also, some thoughts on how we’re trying to extend our lives and live forever, and some thoughts on consciousness and the ego. “We need death to motivate us to do anything in life.” 27:29 - Discussion on empathy and consciousness in animals, the evolution of species, and survival instincts. Also, a bit on how much food we consume, and how much resources it takes to grow something and then when we lose that something, we lose all of those resources that were involved. 33:32 - Various psychoanalytic concepts and the next section on life being this chaos that we get lost in, and hiding behind these shared mythologies to avoid that chaos. Comforting ourselves to hide from the true reality of that situation. 38:22 - Thinking of information having objective value, and some thoughts on how we adopt these beliefs to gain something. Also, when someone challenges that belief, we lash out at them. How noticing ourselves having an emotional reaction when this happens shows us that that belief is most likely crony. How noticing this emotional response in others can benefit you and examples of this, as well. 44:13 - Discussion on how ideologies gain their strength, people getting emotionally invested in them, how we all need something we can cling to really strongly, and how we jump around with clinging to things. Also, some discussion on jumping around from obsessions and how people who feel strongly in certain communities will lash out on others who do or think differently. 53:40 - Some discussion and examples of us doing things more aggressively than we normally would to gain a sense of control that we’re lacking in another area of our life. Doing trivial acts to gain the illusion of control. 55:52 - Thoughts on cryptocurrency and how we will sometimes mess up things on purpose, just to regain that sense of control and do it all over again. How this can lead to loss of control, as well. 1:02:19 - How we’re always going to have various anxieties and how we can use these to trigger personal growth. Also, a bit on finding out what it is that you’re avoiding the most, and how that is most likely what you need to be doing. How taking a small action towards doing that can make it easier to do the rest and some discussion on making compromises with yourself, as well. 1:05:24 - The next section on the spell cast by persons that is transference. Describing transference, and how we deify certain persons to gain more control in our own lives due to following that person. Also, how we get offended when someone ruins our image of something that we have a fixed perspective on. 1:11:20 - How religion has to have had some survival benefit to be so pervasive throughout the world and every culture and some discussion on the shared myth of certain similarities between people. 1:12:50 - Thoughts on how we’ve lost spirituality and mysticism over the years, and how modern man tries to replace that vital awe and wonder with a how-to-do-it manual. Why we prefer this manual and why we need to think that everything is perfectly logical to remove the anxiety from the dreaded uncertainty. Tying this back into the illusion of control. 1:15:57 - How we all avoid this fear of death and dealing with our problems by tranquilizing ourselves with something trivial (celebrities, social media, the news, etc). How we need to face the uncertainty of certain situations and the true reality of situations. 1:17:25 - Feeling the pain of failure, engaging in experience and being fully invested in it to learn from it. Also, not just knowing, but actually living and plunging into experiences. “If you have all reflection without any plunging into experience, you’ll just go crazy. And if you have just all plunging with no reflection, you’re a brute. You have to balance both of them.” 1:19:15 - Some last thoughts and how we have to face up to our need to be heroic. How culture doesn’t really provide opportunities to be heroic and helps us forget it, and how this deprives us of our heroic urge to victory. Also, tying this into universal based income and some thoughts on that. 1:22:53 - The last line of the book and some closing thoughts on the podcast, the book, the newsletter, and supporting the podcast. If you enjoyed this episode, don’t forget to subscribe at https://madeyouthinkpodcast.com The irony of man’s condition is that the deepest need is to be free of the anxiety of death and annihilation, but it is life itself which awakens it and so we must shrink from being fully alive.

What’s up Fitness Peeps! Thanks for checking out my podcast. In today’s episode there’s a moment for gratitude, an inspiration from Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist, Mike Maples Jr.,  a “comedy show” visualization and then 5 minutes of meditation. Here are the inspiring words from Mike: Defining yourself relative to somebody else's accomplishment or how somebody else acts, causes you to not spend the time to discover how you could be your best self For more info, listen to Mike on the Tim Ferriss podcast at: Tim Ferriss Podcast with Mike Maples Jr. About Meditation for Fitness Peeps Podcast: If you’re saying to yourself, “What the heck is this podcast all about?”, here’s the quick version.  I’m into health and fitness and so are a lot of my friends.  I’m also into meditation, but most of my fitness friends aren’t, because they don’t know how to do it, or, they think it’s too hard.  Because of that, I put together a quick and easy meditation practice that can be done in approximately 10 minutes and it includes: a moment for gratitude, an inspiration, a visualization and 5 minutes of meditation using a soundtrack that contains a binaural beat or an isochronic tone.  I’ve made it super easy for you and my fitness friends to start meditating.  YOU’RE WELCOME! :)   By the way, I recommend that you use headphones while you listen to these meditations and NEVER LISTEN WHILE YOU’RE DRIVING If you want to know more about me, check out my website: http://www.philstolaronek.com If you want to check out my Zenabration meditation app: www.zenabration.com https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zenabration/id1140890387?mt=8 Please follow me on Instagram @Zenabration Intro / Outro Music:  “Blank” by Disfigure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7ZsBPK656s http://www.facebook.com/DisfigureOffi... http://www.soundcloud.com/disfigureof... http://www.youtube.com/user/Disfigure...

“Picking a path, even if it’s not the right path, will get you closer to finding the path that will work for you.” “The Power of Myth” is a series of interviews conducted over two years between Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers, originally meant for television, but eventually repackaged into this book covering Campbell’s lifetime of research on the power of mythology to influence our lives and thinking. It made both of us seriously think about the value of mythology, stories, religion, and how historic lessons can be carried across time. If you’re someone who normally prefers actionable information, and reading non-fiction, The Power of Myth makes a strong case for how timeless stories can teach us more than a bulleted list ever can. We cover a lot in the episode, including: How mythology can influence your work and pursuing your passions Using mythology and theology as a guide for your life Finding your path to bliss and maintaining that bliss Promoting growth by welcoming your challenges and enemies Balancing the necessary sacrifices in everything that you do Gaining inspiration from ancient mythology and theology And much more. Do you know the most important part your kid’s education process? In this week’s podcast Billy & Joy discuss Seth Godin's opinion that the best education focuses on just two things. Listen in and decide if you agree! MRS O11 Greg Baugues This episode of My Ruby Story features Greg Baugues. Greg has been on two previous episodes, episode 142 where he discussed mental illness, and episode 258 where he discussed Twilio. Greg has been at Twilio for three and a half years. He worked on the developer/evangelism team for three years. A couple of months ago he became the lead developer of the community team. He lived in Chicago for eleven years, where he first started using Ruby. He moved to Brooklyn, New York a year ago. How did you get into programming? When he was five or six his parents owned a TRS-80 when he was five or six. It had a cassette drive and when turned on it booted into basic. He wrote programs in basic on this computer and it was an instant gratification to him. On a back cover of a magazine, he read there would be a code printed in basic that he would copy line by line. Later, his family bought a PC that had MS-DOS with QBasic, and his friends introduced him to Pascal, C, and C++. When he graduated high school he started PHP and got into web stuff. How did you get from PHP and web stuff to Ruby? In 1999 Greg used PHP to start a dot-com company with which they sold eight months later for all equity. He jokes that he “started and sold a company and all I got was a polo shirt out of it.”  This reinforced that he always wanted to work in programming but that he would never be happy just programming. He wanted to be involved working on the people side of things, too. He got a job at a consulting agency at Table XI where he was a sales guy. He claims that he wasn’t good at sales, so stopped programming for one and a half to two years in order to become better. Then he traveled with his wife in Europe for a while. This showed him that he spent his free time programming. After this he picked up Ruby for the first time. Ruby was his first language of choice because Table XI and most of Chicago was using Ruby at the time. He also fell in love with it. What was it about Ruby that you thought was cool? Greg finds Ruby beautiful and expressive. He believes that it makes more sense than for loop and believes that you can explain it to someone who’s never done coding before and it makes sense to them. Writing Ruby is the closest you can come to writing pseudo code that actually runs. Ruby doesn’t look much different from pseudo code. He thinks it is a joy to write in Ruby. What contributions do you feel like you’ve made to the Ruby community? Greg believes that his biggest contribution would be in the vein of mental health. He has Bipolar Disorder and was on a Ruby Rogues podcast where he spoke about it. Because of his disorder, he failed out of college, had trouble with relationships, getting out of bed, paying bills, and a lot of guilt. He finally got treatment in 2007 where medication slowly helped. Four years ago he had a coworker who overdosed that had been showing symptoms of the same disorder. The next day instead of doing a lightening talk he had scheduled about fantasy football, he gave a talk about mental illness and started giving talks about mental illnesses everywhere in the Ruby community. Charles tells Greg that he heard someone speak about him and said he’d decided to go get help and have a relationship with his family again. He said that Greg’s episode of the podcast had helped him, and others have emailed him about it too. He explains that changing the way someone lives is just as important as writing source code. Greg says that he has learned that we are not alone in this community. There is a value of sharing your story and being vulnerable. It is easy to underestimate the compassion and empathy people have in the Ruby community. What are you working on now? Greg just had a conference called Signal for Twilio two weeks ago. There were 2,000 developers and 100 speakers at the conference. He was part of the team that organized speakers. Two months ago he started a leadership role with the developer community team for the first time. He’s trying to learn how to be in a management role for the first time. There were a million developers that signed up for Twilio so he is trying to figure out how to organize a community of developers instead of just having customers.
