Welcome back, Part of Us tribe. This week we're exploring a pivotal moment in En Vogue's career with their 2004 album 'Soulflower.' Looking into the background, we discuss the transformations the group went through, including lineup changes and shifts in musical direction amidst the evolving R&B landscape of the early 2000s. With Cindy and Terry taking on executive producer roles, 'Soulflower' marks a significant shift towards a more mature, neo-soul sound, reflecting both the industry's changes and the group's own evolution. Did we like this change in direction? Listen to find out. We also dissect the album track by track, examining how En Vogue blended neo-soul influences with their signature style. From the opener "Losin' My Mind" to "Stop" to the cover of "I Do Love You (Piece of My Love)," and "New Day Calling" each song on the album offers a unique perspective on love, life, and resilience. We also address listener feedback, discussing the absence of Maxine and Dawn and speculating on how their presence might have shaped the album's dynamics. “I just met the second coming of Michael Jackson,” says Frank Gatson, famed choreographer and Dance Dad to the stars, of meeting Beyonce for the first time in 1997 when she was just 15 years old. And Frank would know—his first major job was working with MJ on the 30-day shoot for Jackson's iconic “Smooth Criminal” video. Since then, he's worked with acts such as En Vogue, Usher, Toni Braxton, Brandy, Tyrese, Rihanna, not to mention a young John Corella. For his work, he remains the most nominated choreographer in the history of MTV. He began his career dancing in the long-running “Up With People” tour, staying with local families in each country in which they performed. Navigating language and cultural barriers helped him to hone his people skills as well as a keen intuition which has allowed him to share—and elevate—his artists' visions on an almost psychic level. With each performance, Frank insists, dancers are making history. After all, dancing and music can bring people together like nothing else. This requires that he be unabashedly honest with his artists, even when no one else will be. That honesty has gotten him in trouble, but superstars with the same drive and ambition know he just wants to get it right. And when it's right, he says, it's magical. With the same honesty, he critiques the current state of dance, what this generation is lacking and what needs to change. He reflects on his memories of a segregated American South, racism and homophobia in the dance industry. With a long and illustrious career, which shows no sign of slowing down any time soon, Frank's passion for and fascination with dance remains as fierce as ever. He has big plans—hear the musical he wants to resurrect, what American dancers can learn from K-Pop groups, and the five current pop stars he would like to form into a supergroup. When we share our light, he says, we sparkle brighter. Quotes “Some people might think my gift is to dance or to do what I've done all my life, but I think my gift is to see.” (5:52 | Frank Gatson) “I think musicians, dancers and singers can change the world. It's the one thing that all people love.” (10:10 | Frank Gatson) “You can feel racism, you can feel it when you walk into a room. Especially with my keen people skills. Sometimes, I'll go to a hotel and the elevator door will open. If I see a woman grab her purse, I don't get on the elevator. I don't want to give her that.” (22:20 | Frank Gatson) “It was like the little girl came out. Just imagine, I met Beyonce in ‘97. She was 15 years old, and when she shot up from the air in the Soldier's Field stadium, and said, ‘Is that Frank?!' I could immediately hear her like a little girl, and I looked up, and I started cheesing like a little clown. I was just so impressed that she saw me in the midst of all those people down there.” (26:21 | Frank Gatson) “Beyonce has told me, ‘Frank, your passion is going to get you in trouble.' And it does. A lot of people don't hire me because they think I'm trouble. I'm not trouble, I know I'm not trouble. I just want the greatest. I want history to be made. They just don't get me. Everybody who's worked with me gets me. If they've heard about me, they don't get me.” (27:26 | Frank Gatson) “I have a saying: ‘Share the light; sparkle brighter.” (41:55 | Frank Gatson) “Life is too special to let someone else predict what you need to say. You need to be gracious, you need to be nice, but be honest about this thing called ‘show business.' That's why there's so much mediocrity? What has blown your mind lately about show business? Think about it like that. It's because people are not really in it like they should be in it. They're sugar coating it.” (48:48 | Frank Gatson) “The reason that I was asked to work with Destiny's Child was because they saw my work with En Vogue. And Beyonce, I equipped her with all four En Vogue girls. The classiness of Terry Ellis, the pageantry of Cindy Herron, the soulfulness and spicy part of Dawn Robinson, the soulful, soulful, driven Maxine Jones. Beyonce's all four of those girls in one.” (52:35 | Frank Gatson) “I was in an agent's office and I saw Paula Abdul's number on the desk and I memorized it. I went home and called Paula and said, ‘I'm coming to your audition today, my name is Frank Gatson.' She was pretty mad, but she hired me.” (1:10:53 | Frank Gatson) Links Dance Dance Dad with John Corella on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dancedadwithjohncorella/ John on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/john_corella/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

This week's episode is dedicated to En Vogue's haunting, mid-tempo song 'Whatever.' Written and produced by Babyface and Giuliano Franco, this gold-selling single sees the Funky Divas in uncharted territory. For the first time, the ladies crafted an album not entirely under the supervision of longtime producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy. Sybil Lynch, known simply as Sybil, is an American R&B and pop singer–songwriter. Sybil gained notable success in her career with songs during the mid-1980s into the mid-1990s. She is the cousin of former En Vogue singer Maxine Jones. Sybil signed to Next Plateau Records in the United States (with a licensing deal with Champion Records in the United Kingdom) and began recording in 1986 with the release of her first single "Falling in Love". The record reached the top 30 on the Dance charts and began a successful career for Sybil, releasing her debut album Let Yourself Go a year later, which was a minor hit. Sybil achieved worldwide crossover hits with her cover versions of Dionne Warwick's hits "Don't Make Me Over" and "Walk On By", which were released in 1989 and 1990, respectively. The former became Sybil's biggest hit in the US, peaking at 20, and was a 1 hit in New Zealand. "Walk On By" is still, to date, the highest charting position for this Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic in the UK, peaking at 6 closely followed by Gabrielle (7). Sybil's self-titled second album became her biggest-selling album in the US. She signed with PWL Records for the UK market for this album, where it was titled Walk On By. Sybil would be signed to PWL Records until 1998. #rnb #rnbpodcast #rnbmusic #newjackswing #hiphop #hiphopmusic #DJCassidy #PassTheMic #HalftimeChat Halftime Chat is hosted by Mental Health Psychotherapist Nnamdi E.S. B. Cox briefly looks back at En Vogue's second album 1992's Funky Divas. On the heels of their successful debut 1990s' Born To Sing, the Oakland based R&B quartet (Dawn Robinson, Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron) came out blazing with their 2nd album which eclipsed their debut. Teaming up once again with producers and songwriters Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, the group scored a commercial hit with the album, placing scoring two Billboard R&B and Soul #1 hits in "Never Gonna Get It" and "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and selling 3.5 million copies in the U.S.Upon its release in 1992, the album recieved mixed reviews from the critics, but since then, it has garnered more widespread acclaim and praises for its vocal excellence and production depth. It is the group's best selling album to date.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comLearn More About the "Podcast GPS" BootCamp Course!www.vaultclassicpod.com/podcastgpsSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: Never Gonna Get It: Celebrating 30 Years of En Vogue's "Funky Divas" | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/tribute-celebrating-30-years-of-en-vogue-funky-divasThis is Dig: En Vogue Celebrates 30 Years of Funky Divashttps://www.thisisdig.com/en-vogue-celebrate-30-years-of-funky-divas/Audacy: Run That Back: En Vogue's "Funky Divas" Turns 30https://www.audacy.com/music/hip-hop-r-b/run-that-back-en-vogues-funky-divas-turns-30Music Musings and Such: Free Your Mind: En Vogue's Funky Diva's at Thirtyhttps://www.musicmusingsandsuch.com/musicmusingsandsuch/2022/2/9/feature-free-you-mind-en-vogues-funky-divas-at-thirtySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Historical accounts say there were four lynching deaths in Leon County between 1897 and 1937. Those tragedies will be formally recognized with the placement of a memorial near the site of the old county jail on Saturday, July 17. To talk about that and the hope that awareness will lead to deeper understanding and empathy are Remembrance Project members: Byron Greene, Blan Teagle, Maxine Jones, Brant Copeland and Penny Young.

Dreams of Black Wall Street (Formerly Black Wall Street 1921)
In America, citizenship implies the ability to enjoy the full rights of freedom. This question of who belongs to American society, who is a real American citizen, has been a central problem since the time of the Revolution.Rosewood is but one example of the enormous cost African Americans have had to pay for pursuing the promise of full citizenship in America. Those who terrorized Rosewood did so with impunity largely because Black people in America simply were not counted as full citizens. Their existence was one of second or third class citizenship. This is why those who escaped the Rosewood Massacre and lived to talk about it rarely did. They understood that many members of the mobs who hunted Rosewood residents like animals during the first week of January in 1923 were alive and well in the years that followed. Some were even neighbors in communities some of the survivors had relocated to. And as second or third class citizens - those who escaped the Massacre felt their survival depended upon their silence. For nearly 60 years - Rosewood remained buried in the memories of those who escaped, witnessed or caused the massacre until a journalist named Gary Moore who worked for the St. Petersburg Times, which is now the Tampa Bay Times, started looking into the Rosewood Massacre in early 1982. His investigative expose was published in the paper on July 25, 1982. Since then the story of Rosewood has been brought into clearer focus through hours upon hours of further investigations and research and media coverage. Eventually a number of elderly Rosewood survivors decided that the time had come for them to seek justice in the form of a claims bill in the Florida Legislature that produced the nation's only government compensation payments to Lynching Era victims. In this episode, listeners will hear from journalist and author, Michael D’Orso, who is the author of “Like Judgement Day:” a detailed account of the Rosewood Massacre as well as the lives of the survivors in the decades that followed and their years long fight for justice and compensation. Guests on this episode also include Gregory Black, Director of the Rosewood Heritage Foundation; Stephen Hanlon, lead attorney in the Rosewood claims bill and St. Louis University School of Law Professor; and University of Florida Professor, Dr. Maxine Jones, who worked as principal investigator for the Rosewood Academic Study. In 1990, En Vogue released their debut album "Born To Sing" which yielded the #2 hit "Hold On." As talented as these ladies (Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones) were, it wasn't clear if they had staying power. Two years later that question was answered with the release of "Funky Divas" which yielded three top 10 hits "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", and "Free Your Mind." There was no doubt, these ladies dominated. With expectations running high, they finally released their third album "EV3" in 1996 which generated the top ten smash "Don't Let Go (Love)" but then dropped off shortly after. It's possible that the long lapses between releases had a lot to do with their decline in popularity. I truly believe that the Clive Davis philosophy played a big role as well. That is to remix their hits for the dance floor to extend their presence in all facets of popular music. We'll see the same with another superstar all-girl Hip Hop group in a couple of days. The remixes were and still are a vital marketing tool for artists to reach as many fans as possible. It's not they didn't have any, but remixes appeared to be commissioned for non-hits off their albums. Regardless, En Vogue has sold 20 million records worldwide and ranked as the 2nd most successful female groups of the 1990s with "Don't Let Go (Love)" and "Hold On" ranking as the #12 and #23 most successful girl group songs of all-time. ¹ In 2017, En Vogue (now consisting of Terry Ellis, Rhona Bennett, and Cindy Herron) released "Electric Cafe" and is still touring in support of their current and previous work. After the wildly successful dance-pop debut by Expose in the late 80's, commercial music began taking a detour right when Hip Hop started to mainstream to a wider audience. That is to remix their hits for the dance floor so as to extend their presence in all facets of popular music. We'll see the same with another superstar all-girl Hip Hop group in a couple of days. The remixes were and still are a vital marketing tool for artists to reach as many fans as possible. It's not they didn't have any, but remixes appeared to be commissioned for non-hits off their albums. Regardless, En Vogue has sold 20 million records worldwide and ranked as the 2nd most successful female groups of the 1990's with "Don't Let Go (Love)" and "Hold On" ranking as the #12 and #23 most successful girl group songs of all-time. ¹ In 2017, En Vogue (now consisting of Terry Ellis, Rhona Bennett, and Cindy Herron) released "Electric Cafe" and are still touring in support of their current and previous work. Maxine Jones , a former lead singer and original member of the multi platinum top selling female group of all times EN VOGUE. Maxine Jones (born January 16, 1962 in Paterson, New Jersey) is one of the original members of the R&B singing group En Vogue. She originally left the group in 2001 to spend time with her daughter. Jones rejoined En Vogue on a permanent basis in the third quarter of 2004. In July 2012 she left the group along with Dawn Robinson. She also appeared as a judge in Paramount Idol, alongside Bruce Flohr and Andy Waldeck. As a member of En Vogue, Maxine was credited as the member with the "Motown" voice. It seemed as perfect reasoning, since she stated in many interviews that her musical influences: Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Tina Turner, and Gladys Knight all had musical careers although some were not Motown artists. Maxine has a wide vocal range, spanning between 3-5 octaves, making her quite versatile within the group.
