3:00pm- According to a report from journalists Devlin Barrett and Perry Stein of the Washington Post, federal agents are in the process of investigating Hunter Biden—the son of President Joe Biden—and believe they have acquired enough evidence to “charge him with tax crimes and a false statement related to a gun purchase.” Will Hunter Biden actually face prosecution? 3:35pm- According to a Bloomberg report, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has voted to cut oil production by 2 million barrels per day—despite the Biden Administration's numerous attempts to persuade the intergovernmental organization to produce more oil. In response to OPEC's decision, the Biden Administration announced it would release an additional ten million barrels from the strategic petroleum reserves. In September, Forbes wrote that the nation's petroleum reserves were already at their lowest level since 1984. 4:05pm- While speaking at a seminar hosted by University of Southern California's Center for Health Journalism, Dr. Anthony Fauci defended the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) continued funding of gain-of-function research—specifically research conducted by the non-governmental organization EcoHealth Alliance. EcoHealth has been accused of failing to report an experiment in Wuhan which resulted in the creation of a bat virus that, according to Science.org, “made mice sicker.” 4:30pm- On Wednesday night's Late Night Show, host Stephen Colbert and Dr. Anthony Fauci went shopping for Halloween candy. Colbert asks the hard-hitting questions, like: “What's your favorite candy?” 4:40pm- Pastor William Devlin—International Human Rights Advocate—joins the show to talk about an upcoming rally he has organized to support Mark Houck. Houck, a pro-life activist known for peacefully protesting outside of abortion clinics, recently had his home raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice. He was arrested for violating the “Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act.” 5:05pm- On Wednesday, CBS Evening News aired a segment decrying the removal of several children's books from a school library in Jamestown, Michigan. According to those supporting their removal, the books contained sexual content inappropriate for children. 5:10pm- Assistant Producer Daniel reveals that Neumann University recently decided to remove Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from its school's library. What did Willy Wonka do to offend people??? Actually, there might be a few controversial things… 5:20pm- According to the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board, “more than a dozen environmental outfits, including Greenpeace and the Union of Concerned Scientists, wrote to big tech companies to blame them for ‘amplifying and perpetuating climate disinformation.'” Recently, Melissa Fleming—the Communications Undersecretary for the United Nations—bragged about partnering with Google to manipulate search results on climate change. 5:40pm- Paul J. Larkin—Senior Legal Research Fellow in the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at the Heritage Foundation—joins the show to discuss President Biden's announcement to issue a blanket pardon for people convicted of simple marijuana possession. Is this an abuse of the President's pardon capabilities? 6:05pm- During Supreme Court oral arguments for Merrill v. Milligan and Merrill v. Caster—cases which will determine whether Alabama's new congressional map is a violation of the Voting Rights Act—Alabama Solicitor General Edmund G. Lacour argued that his state's redistricting was made in a “race neutral manner.” Based on her questions, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson seemed to believe that the 14th Amendment was not meant to be “race neutral or race blind.” In his retort to Justice Jackson, Lacour stated: “the 14th Amendment is a prohibition on discriminatory state action…it is not an obligation to engage in affirmative discrimination in favor of some groups...” 6:35pm- Alexandra Wilkes—Communications Director for New Jersey GOP—joins the show to talk about an investigation into the National Women's Soccer League which concluded players experienced sexual misconduct and emotional abuse. One of the teams in the league, Gotham FC, is owned by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and his wife Tammy. https://www.njgop.org 6:50pm- Who Won Social Media? + Rich Zeoli's Final Thought!

The censorship system involves tech platforms that are consulting with federal government agencies. Meanwhile, Melissa Fleming, the U.N.'s under-secretary-general for Global Communications, has declared that “we own the science” when it comes to climate change. She spoke on a World Economic Forum panel, where she also detailed how the United Nations is training and deploying its own “influencers” to spread its narratives. In this live Q&A with Crossroads host Joshua Philipp, we'll discuss these stories and others, and answer questions from the audience. ⭕️ Stay up-to-date with Josh with the Crossroads NEWSLETTER

It's not often that we have the opportunity to welcome a living composer into our midst, but that's indeed the case as Emmy-nominated composer Kareem Roustom joins us to talk about his clarinet concerto Adrift on the Wine-dark Sea. Inspired by Homer's classic epic The Odyssey and Melissa Fleming's A Hope More Powerful Than The Sea (a harrowing story from the Syrian Refugee Crisis), Kareem's concerto is a meditation on the nature of survival and hope in the face of despair. Local concert-goers have a chance to hear it live from the Toledo Symphony and "intensely soulful" (NY Times) clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, in a program which also features Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade and another modern work, Errollyn Wallen's Mighty River - which is based in part on the hymn tune New Britain (familiar as the melody of Amazing Grace).

This time we have a special guest host! Travis' wife, Melissa Lynn Fleming shakes things up a bit and puts Travis in the hot seat in a deep conversation. They discuss everything! What does it mean to water your world in a world that is divided, confused, and overwhelmed? How do we water our faith when it seems that everyone and everything is fighting for our attention? Melissa and Travis talk about how to live as Christian in a world that isn't. They talk about the stuff that we have forgotten and the world seems to push back on: hospitality, real discipleship that isn't a program! It's a fun and insightful conversation that cuts the trends out and focuses on the timeless truth of God's Word and how we can anchor ourselves into it in a world that seems to be tossed back and forth on the tumultuous waves of our ever-changing culture! It's a great look into the heartbeat of Apollos Watered and how it can help you water your faith so that you can water your world! Help support the ministry of https://apolloswatered.org/support-us/ (Apollos Watered) and transform your world today!
There is no word to describe the loss of a child. I believe it's too painful to describe. In 2016, Melissa Fleming and her family were given the worst news imaginable. Their son, Brock, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Not quite 7 at the time, Brock couldn't understand why he was the only kid in school with brain cancer. Yet, Brock wasn't deterred. He wanted to “kick cancer in the nuts!” Click on the link to watch how this brave family dealt with the loss of a child, and how they are continuing Brock's desire to kick it in the nuts!

How did a boy raised in a small village in Barbados become one of the top United Nations officials tackling climate change? In this episode of Awake at Night, Selwin Hart takes us on his inspiring life journey -- from growing up in a home without electricity to being at the centre of global negotiations to tackle the climate emergency. The first person in his family to attend university, Selwin talks about the transformative power of education. He also explains how determination and a sense of community have served as driving forces in his career. “If we give up, it means that my people in Barbados, my neighbors in the Caribbean, my friends in the Pacific, my friends in Africa, my friends in the developing world, and even folks in rich countries, we would seal their fate… So I refuse to give up.” Selwin says during his conversation with podcast host and UN Global Communications chief Melissa Fleming.
“How obscene it would be for a country…that still has poverty, that still has all these problems, to spend billions in nuclear weapons. What for?” IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has specialized in non-proliferation and disarmament issues for more than 35 years – ever since he began his career as a diplomat in his native Argentina, when the country's then military dictatorship announced that it had mastered uranium enrichment. For many, nuclear is a feared technology. But Rafael argues that it's also a beneficial one. In his conversation with podcast host Melissa Fleming, he explains how advances in nuclear technology have led to pioneering medical treatments and smarter agriculture. He cites the launch of Rays of Hope, a new initiative to harness nuclear technology to scale cancer treatment for women across Africa. Rafael also shares how meeting atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki drives his work at the helm of the IAEA, known as the world's ‘nuclear watchdog.'

And in this week's interview - with UN communications chief Melissa Fleming – why it's crucially important that the Organization should do more to listen to what young activists are saying, for everyone's sake.

“I've seen horrible things. I've seen massacres. Human suffering. These are not easy sights to see. The best way I found to deal with that is just to be determined to fix it in some fashion.” UN Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Coordinator for Yemen David Gressly has seen some of the worst of man's inhumanity to man during a career of more than 40 years in peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance and development. In this episode, he talks with podcast host Melissa Fleming about what has driven him to devote his life to helping the most vulnerable in some of the most fragile places on earth. With more than 20 million people in need of assistance and a seven-year ongoing war, Yemen is among the world's worst humanitarian crises. But it's not just conflict that threatens the Yemeni people. As David explains, every three days someone is injured or even killed by landmines or unexploded ordnance. During this eye-opening conversation, David shares his concerns about the dire situation in Yemen and the likelihood of being able to sustain the humanitarian response in the year ahead.
"Every trafficking story is a story that can shake you to your core. We're talking about children sometimes, about babies… We're talking about women at very vulnerable ages. We're also talking about men that desperately seek employment and find their hands into criminal gangs that would exploit them for sexual purposes to any other purposes." Ilias Chatzis heads the team fighting human trafficking and migrant smuggling at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. In this episode, he joins podcast host Melissa Fleming to talk about how a man who grew up on a Greek island came to have a burning sense of justice and a crime-fighting career of more than 25 years. In this conversation, Ilias describes how reports about online abuse of children and sexual predation of women have surged during the COVID-19 pandemic and how criminals are always adapting to new technologies to exploit their victims. Ilias also shares his concerns over the lack of resources worldwide to fight trafficking and smuggling and why we must learn from history if we are to ever overcome these scourges.
As the severity of the Covid-19 pandemic was realised throughout the year, plans and events were cancelled around the world. The Olympics and Expo are only two examples of the cancelations that organisers from all walks of life announced in 2020. One major milestone the world was meant to celebrate was the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. World leaders were slated to descend upon New York to mark the important occasion. Instead, travel was halted and heads of state gave their brief pre-recorded speeches to a largely empty General Assembly Hall. Mrs Fleming spoke to The National of the role of the international organisation as a guest of the “My 2020” podcast. Global cooperation is needed to tackle the challenges brought about by the pandemic. In addition to combatting the health and economic fallout from Covid-19, the United Nations has declared an “infodemic” that must be tackled. Mrs Fleming said that disinformation and fake news "in a public health crisis, is public harm. It makes people anxious, it leads them astray". The UN has launched an initiative called "Verified" to face this infodemic Next year, a major task for the UN and governments will be getting Covid-19 vaccines to people around the world - a logistical and resource challenge, complicated by disinformation campaigns against vaccines. Mrs Fleming warned: "We need to make sure that everybody has access, and even if it's only in our enlightened self interest, you know, nobody is safe until everybody is safe". “My 2020” is a seven-part series, hosted by Mina Al-Oraibi, The National's Editor-in-Chief, speaking to leaders on how their lives and industries have been changed by Covid-19.

The second episode of Future-Proofing Media Freedom looks at how media organisations are responding to the ongoing crisis of disinformation. As landmark elections loom in, among other countries, the US and Myanmar, the role of the media as a source of trusted, accurate information is under renewed scrutiny. Social media-driven disinformation campaigns have been regular features of many recent electoral events, from the UK’s referendum on Europe to the 2016 US presidential election, and countless other local and national elections around the world. How can media organisations counter the spread of fake news, and support informed, transparent elections? Have new strategies emerged since 2016 to address disinformation campaigns? What should governments be doing to support the media sector in these endeavours? To discuss these questions Ben Horton and Dr Julie Posetti are joined by Mevan Babakar (Deputy CEO of Full Fact), Melissa Fleming (United Nations Under-Secretary General for Global Communications), Sonny Swe (Founder of Frontier Myanmar) and Dr Ethan Zuckerman (Founder of the Institute for Digital Public Infrastructure). Mike Ryan, Executive Director of The Health Emergencies Programme for the World Health Organization (WHO), is leading the team responding to the international containment and treatment of COVID-19. He tells Melissa Fleming how he had to give up on dreams of becoming a trauma surgeon, after he broke his spine in a car crash in Iraq. He was held hostage there while working in an Iraqi hospital during the first Gulf War. That experience set him on the path that led him to the WHO, with a specialism in infectious diseases. "It was very clear to me that you were either a surgeon or a good infectious disease doctor, because that seemed to be the two things a doctor could make a difference with, in many developing country environments". From SARS to Ebola to Avian Flu to Covid-19, Mike Ryan has committed his life's work to fight the spread of infectious diseases. He says "The info-demic can be just as damaging as the pandemic itself, because if people aren't getting the right information, if they're not able to trust that information, and then we have a problem. There's no point having solutions to offer people if they don't hear about them, or they don't believe in them."
In this episode, host Melissa Fleming speaks with Neil Walsh, Chief of Cybercrime and Anti-Money Laundering for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. He describes the horrific surge of criminals exploiting and abusing children online while they are in lock-down and what he is doing to stop it. He speaks about his belief that “COVID-19 is the great reset button.” He also describes the scene he witnessed of a deadly terrorist bombing as a child in Belfast, Northern Ireland and how “that was the moment where I decided I’m going to do something to stop this stuff.” He also speaks candidly about his continuing 14-year battle with bowel cancer and why he is so vocal on social media about his struggle with the disease. “There were four occasions where he was told by a doctor, ‘you may not survive tonight.’ He reveals that he was diagnosed on the day of his second date with his wife and the notes he writes to his four children in case he doesn’t make it out of surgery alive.
In this opening episode for Season 3 of Awake at Night, host Melissa Fleming speaks with David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme, about his own experience being sick with COVID-19 and why people should listen to the science. He also explains why the pandemic is causing an spiraling epidemic of hunger. In Mr. Beasley's words, should the world fail to come together and invest in people everywhere, we may face a "famine of biblical proportions." From his home in South Carolina, to Yemen, to Sudan and Ethiopia, Mr. Beasley shares candid moments of his journey in the world of humanitarian work, and his thoughts on why the UN is needed now more than ever.
How are health workers, humanitarians and peacekeepers racing to protect the world’s most vulnerable populations from the impact of the COVID-19 virus?
