British actor and comedian Russell Brand has been formally charged with multiple sexual offenses by the Metropolitan Police Service. The charges include one count each of rape, indecent assault, and oral rape, along with two counts of sexual assault. These allegations involve four separate women and pertain to incidents that allegedly occurred between 1999 and 2005 in locations such as Bournemouth and Westminster, London. The investigation was initiated in September 2023 following reports by Channel 4's Dispatches and The Sunday Times. Brand has consistently denied these accusations, asserting that all his relationships during that period were consensual. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 2, 2025.In addition to the charges in the United Kingdom, Brand is facing legal challenges in the United States. An anonymous woman, identified as Jane Doe, has filed a civil lawsuit in New York, alleging that Brand sexually assaulted her during the filming of the 2011 movie "Arthur." The lawsuit also names Warner Bros. as a defendant. Brand's legal team has expressed concern about the potential for criminal charges in the U.S., citing the overlap between the U.S. civil case and the U.K. criminal proceedings. Despite these legal issues, Brand is scheduled to speak at Florida's New College on April 12, 2025, discussing topics related to free speech and cancel culture. The college's decision to proceed with his appearance has sparked debate, given the serious nature of the allegations against him.to  contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Russell Brand hit with five sexual assault charges | Fox News

Check out a secret "icebreaker" interview with Jackie at patreon.com/hkpodcasts. In this conversation, Jackie Malton shares her experiences working in prisons and her insights into the psychology of criminals, particularly focusing on masculinity, addiction, and the impact of childhood trauma. She discusses her interviews with a serial killer and the complexities of rehabilitation, self-discovery, and the importance of storytelling in understanding human behaviour. Malton emphasizes the need for self-reflection and the role of mentorship in personal growth, while also addressing the challenges faced by individuals in the prison system. Jackie and Hugh also discuss various aspects of policing in London, emphasizing the need for geographical restructuring, rebuilding public trust, and understanding gang culture. She explores the role of direct entry in policing, the challenges faced by officers, and the importance of rehabilitation in prisons. --- Jackie Malton is a UK-based television script consultant and former senior police officer. Born in 1951, she made history as one of the first openly gay women to rise through the ranks of the Metropolitan Police Service. Malton's remarkable career spanned multiple areas, including the Flying Squad, Murder Squad, and Fraud Squad. Malton is perhaps most famous for being the inspiration behind the iconic character DCI Jane Tennison in Lynda La Plante's Prime Suspect drama series. Her experiences as a woman detective in a male-dominated establishment, combined with her bravery in speaking out against police corruption in the 1980s, made her a compelling figure for La Plante's character. In recent years, policing in England and Wales has appeared to be trapped in a cycle of crisis. From high-profile scandals to criticisms of operational standards, concerns about the police's role and conduct have intensified. Perhaps most shockingly, a serving police officer was convicted of the murder of Sarah Everard, a tragedy that underscored the urgent need for accountability within the force. A subsequent review by Baroness Louise Casey highlighted deep-seated issues within the Metropolitan Police Service, pointing to "institutional racism, sexism, and homophobia" within the organization. Meanwhile, there's a growing perception that the police have deprioritized certain types of crime, like shoplifting. Political figures, too, have weighed in, accusing the police of double standards in their approach to protests and civil unrest. All of this has contributed to a significant decline in public trust. So, what exactly are the root issues? What realistic solutions could address these complex problems? And how might the current political climate impact the feasibility of any reforms? To explore these pressing questions, we are joined by three experts in crime and policing: Ben Bradford – Professor of Global City Policing in the Department of Security and Crime Science at University College London Jonathan Jackson – Professor of Research Methodology in the Department of Methodology at the London School of Economics Emmeline Taylor – Professor of Criminology in the School of Policy and Global Affairs at City, University of London Together, Ben, Jon, and Emmeline have edited a new special issue of The Political Quarterly titled Policing the Permacrisis, which dives into these challenges and potential solutions. Over the past few years as professionals we have seen startling increases in problematic use of crystal methamphetamine (including injecting), dependent GHB/GBL use requiring medically supported detoxification, and use in highly sexualised contexts including a high level of risky sexual behaviour, which has become known as chemsex. Engaging in chemsex can be managed by some. This can mean that there is minimal impact on an individual's general wellbeing, work, relationships with partners, friends, and family. For others though it can prove problematic. This episode explores the crimes, risks and vulnerabilities associated with chemsex, which is so very often a taboo subject. Talking about chems and chemsex is extremely important to ensure that those who need it get the help support they deserve as well as know they are not alone!

fWotD Episode 2546: Death of Blair Peach Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Wednesday, 24 April 2024 is Death of Blair Peach.Clement Blair Peach (25 March 1946 – 24 April 1979) was a New Zealand teacher who was killed during an anti-racism demonstration in Southall, London, England. A campaigner and activist against the far right, in April 1979 Peach took part in an Anti-Nazi League demonstration in Southall against a National Front election meeting in the town hall and was hit on the head, probably by a member of the Special Patrol Group (SPG), a specialist unit within the Metropolitan Police Service. He died in hospital that night. An investigation by Commander John Cass of the Metropolitan Police's Complaints Investigation Bureau concluded that Peach had been killed by one of six SPG officers, and others had preserved their silence to obstruct his investigation. The report was not released to the public, but was available to John Burton, the coroner who conducted the inquest; excerpts from a leaked copy were also published in The Leveller and The Sunday Times in early 1980. In May 1980 the jury in the inquest arrived at a verdict of death by misadventure, although press and some pressure groups—notably the National Council for Civil Liberties—expressed concern that no clear answers had been provided, and at the way Burton conducted the inquest.Celia Stubbs, Peach's partner, campaigned for the Cass report to be released and for a full public inquiry. An inquiry was rejected, but in 1988 the Metropolitan Police paid £75,000 compensation to Peach's family. In 2009 Ian Tomlinson died after he was struck from behind by a member of the Territorial Support Group, the SPG's successor organisation; the parallels in the deaths proved to be the catalyst in the release of the Cass report to the public. The Metropolitan Police commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, released the report and supporting documentation. He also offered an official apology to Peach's family. The policing of the demonstration in Southall damaged community relations in the area. Since Peach's death the Metropolitan Police have been involved in a series of incidents and poorly conducted investigations—the 1993 murder of Stephen Lawrence, the death of Jean Charles de Menezes in 2005, the botched 2006 Forest Gate raid and the death of Tomlinson—all of which tarnished the image of the service. Peach's death has been remembered in the music of The Pop Group, Ralph McTell and Linton Kwesi Johnson; the National Union of Teachers set up the Blair Peach Award for work for equality and diversity issues and a school in Southall is named after him. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:37 UTC on Wednesday, 24 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Death of Blair Peach on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Salli Standard.

IfG LIVE – Discussions with the Institute for Government

Fraud is the UK's most common crime. But despite 3.5 million incidents reported in 2022/23, 40% of all reported crimes, only one in a thousand results in a charge or summons. So why is there such a huge gap between preventing, detecting and prosecuting this crime – and what can be done to fix the problem? A wide range of organisations have responsibility for tackling fraud, including the Home Office, National Crime Agency, Serious Fraud Office, City of London Police, Metropolitan Police Service, Financial Conduct Authority and the National Cyber Security Centre. However, there are problems with coordination, capacity and capability. So what can government and others do to help prevent fraud? How can coordination among the various agencies responsible for tackling fraud be improved? And what steps could be taken to help increase detection and prosecution rates? We were joined by an expert panel, including: • Francesca Carlesi, CEO of Revolut UK • Adrian Searle, Director of the National Economic Crime Centre • Nick Stapleton, Co-Presenter of BBC Scam Interceptors • Rt Hon Emily Thornberry MP, Shadow Attorney General The event was chaired by Nick Davies, Programme Director at the Institute for Government Learn more about your ad choices. Prospective financiers believed that Landis' script was too frightening to be a comedy film and too humorous to be a horror film. After achieving success in Hollywood with the comedies The Kentucky Fried Movie, National Lampoon's Animal House and The Blues Brothers, Landis was able to secure financing from PolyGram Pictures to produce An American Werewolf in London. An American Werewolf in London was released in the US by Universal Pictures on August 21, 1981. It was a critical and commercial success, winning the 1981 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film and the first ever Academy Award for Best Makeup. Since its release, it has become a cult classic. A sequel, An American Werewolf in Paris, was released by Hollywood Pictures in 1997 and received mostly negative reviews upon its release. Filming took place between February and March 1981 because director John Landis wanted the film to take place during poor weather. The moors were filmed around the Black Mountains in Wales, and East Proctor is in reality the tiny village of Crickadarn, about six miles (9.7 km) southeast of Builth Wells off the A470. The Angel of Death statue was a prop added for the film, but the red phone box is real, though the Welsh road signs were covered by a fake tree. The pub shown in the film known as the Slaughtered Lamb was actually a cottage located in Crickadarn, and the interior scenes were filmed in the Black Swan, Old Lane, Martyrs Green in Surrey. An American Werewolf in London was the first film allowed to shoot in Piccadilly Circus in 15 years. Landis accomplished this by inviting 300 members of London's Metropolitan Police Service to a screening of his new film The Blues Brothers. The police were so impressed by his work that they granted the production a two-night filming permit between the hours of 1 and 4am. Traffic was stopped only three times for two-minute increments to film the automobile stunts involving the double-decker bus. Other filming locations included Putney General Hospital, Chiswick Maternity Hospital, Redcliffe Square in Earl's Court, the area around Tower Bridge, Tottenham Court Road Underground station, London Zoo, Putney High Street, Belgravia, Hampstead and Southwark. Filming also took place at Twickenham Film Studios in Richmond Upon Thames. #anamericanwerewolfinlondon #werewolf #review #retrospective #horror #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic #trivia #childsplay #creature #spooky #johnlandis #shakira #shewolf

Women shared stories of male violence whilst the Metropolitan Police downplayed Couzen's as an unfortunate ‘bad apple' and declared he ‘was not a police officer.' Since Sarah we've heard nonstop about police officer's including David Carrick perpetrating abuse and violence towards women. More recently Wayne Couzen's extensive indecent exposure history was revealed, and the fact women reported him but the Metropolitan Police Service failed to act. Henry shares his investigation into PC Terry Melka, a police officer convicted of indecent exposure who is still a serving Metropolitan police officer. Laura details her experience of working in the Metropolitan Police and how police perpetrators were dealt with. Following on from a request from a local West London group for blind and partially sighted people to join a series of self defence classes run by the Metropolitan Police in West London the Met decided to look into how accessible their crime prevention material was for visually impaired people. After initially contacting the RNIB for help and advice around how to make their crime prevention material more accessible, the Met and the RNIB started to forge a closer partnership to help make the Met's services more accessible to blind and partially sighted people. The next steps in this on-going partnership between the Met and the RNIB was the recent roll out of the RNIB visual awareness e-learning training course for Officers and staff.  RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was joined at the Met's headquarters, New Scotland Yard in Central London by Stephen Weymouth RNIB Partnership Development Manager, Chief Inspector Karl Spour and Police Constable Lisanne Rice from the Metropolitan Police Service, West Area Devision. Toby began by asking Lisanne about that first connection with the local blind and partially sighted group came about and how things progressed to the RNIB visual awareness e-learning training. With Stephen then talking more about what is covered in the e-learning course and how the course helps businesses, organisations and service providers better meet the needs of their blind and partially sighted customers, clients and service users. Karl and Lisanne then talked about some of the feedback they have had from Officers and staff who have been through the first round of the RNIB visual awareness e-learning training course with some really positive comments on how the course has made a real difference in so many ways including how best to communicate with blind and partially sighted people. Karl then highlighted one piece of feedback from a Detective Sargent who has been in the Met for over 26 years who lost his own sight in 2014 who is still involved in live investigations and he said ‘taking the knowledge that is provided from the training and applying it to the community that we police, this will go a real long way to build trust and confidence within the community' and his hope is that the training will  be spread across the whole of the Met. This is a great partnership between the Metropolitan Police and the RNIB with the hope that in the near future the RNIB visual awareness e-learning training will be rolled out for all Met Officers and staff with the hope that more Police forces will not only take up the e-learning course but also work with the RNIB like the Met has done to implement other services to in a way better meet the needs of blind and partially sighted people. If you work for or know of an organisation like the Metropolitan Police who would like to find out more about working closer with the RNIB and maybe rolling out the visual awareness e-learning training course or other ways of helping to make their services more accessible for blind and partially sighted people, do either make contact with Stephen Weymouth, RNIB Partnership Development Manager via emailing Stephen.Weymouth@rnib.org.uk or either call the RNIB helpline on 0303 123 9999 or visit the RNIB website for more information - https://www.rnib.org.uk (Image shows RNIB logo. An American Werewolf in London is a 1981 horror comedy film written and directed by John Landis. An international co-production of the United Kingdom and the United States, the film stars David Naughton, Jenny Agutter, Griffin Dunne and John Woodvine. The film's plot follows two American backpackers, David and Jack, who are attacked by a werewolf while travelling in England, causing David to question whether he will become a werewolf under the next full moon.  The film made $62 million worldwide against the budget of $5.8 million and At the 54th Academy Awards, it won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Makeup.Landis wrote the first draft of the screenplay for the film in 1969 and shelved it for over a decade. An American Werewolf in London was the first film allowed to shoot in Piccadilly Circus in 15 years. Landis accomplished this by inviting 300 members of London's Metropolitan Police Service to a screening of his new film The Blues Brothers. The police were so impressed by his work that they granted the production a two-night filming permit between the hours of 1 and 4 a.m. Traffic was stopped only three times for two-minute increments to film the automobile stunts involving the double-decker bus.An American Werewolf in London was released in the US by Universal Pictures on August 21, 1981. It was a critical and commercial success, winning the 1981 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film and the first ever Academy Award for Best Makeup. Since its release, it has become a cult classic. In December 2017, Max Landis confirmed on Twitter that he had completed the first draft of the script for a reboot of the film. But beginning in late 2017, accusations by a number of women that Landis had abused them emotionally or sexually began to emerge publicly. In the wake of those allegations, it remains unknown if Landis will be replaced or if the project will be put on indefinite hold.In November 2019, Variety reported that Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead comic book series, was in consideration to serve as a producer for a new reboot.$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$ Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. The head of London's Metropolitan Police, Cressida Dick, said she is resigning Thursday after a string of controversies that undermined public confidence in the force and prompted a falling out between her and the capital's mayor.Mayor Sadiq Khan had recently threatened to oust Dick from her role, saying she wasn't doing enough to reform the Metropolitan Police, Britain's largest police force, and tackle growing accusations of misogyny and racism within her ranks.Khan said late Thursday it was clear the only way to overhaul the force urgently was to have "new leadership right at the top of the Metropolitan Police.”Dick, who has headed the force since 2017 and is the first woman to lead Scotland Yard, said it was with “huge sadness” that it has become clear that Khan "no longer has sufficient confidence in my leadership to continue.”“He has left me no choice but to step aside as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service,” she said in a statement.Dick, 61, added that she will stay in her role for a short period to ensure the force's stability while a replacement is found.A report last week by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the police watchdog, condemned misogyny, bullying, discrimination and sexual harassment among a dozen officers, most of them based in central London's Charing Cross police station. The report cited officers joking about rape and using other offensive language in social media messages, and said the incidents were part of a wider culture that can't be blamed on a few “bad apples.”Khan said last week he was “not satisfied” with Dick's response to calls for change following scandals including the killing of a woman by a serving police officer and the behavior of officers cited by the police watchdog.“Last week, I made clear to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner the scale of the change I believe is urgently required to rebuild the trust and confidence of Londoners in the Met and to root out the racism, sexism, homophobia, bullying, discrimination and misogyny that still exists," Khan said.He thanked Dick for her 40 years of policing service.Dick faced intense pressure to quit last year after a police officer, Wayne Couzens, was convicted of kidnapping, raping and murdering a woman, Sarah Everard, who was walking home at night in London. Everard's slaying by a serving officer shocked the nation, and the police force's subsequent handling of vigils and protests against Everard's slaying also came under heavy fire.Dick acknowledged Thursday that the Everard case and others had “damaged confidence” in her force.- By Sylvia Hui, Associated Press
