There's immersive art… and then there's FOSO — the Fiber Optic Symphonic Orchestra now glowing at Sensorio in Paso Robles. In this episode of The Pour, Adam goes behind the glow with two world-class creators: internationally acclaimed light artist Bruce Munro, and Emmy-winning composer Nainita Desai. This is the first time Bruce has created a piece where light is fully synchronized to an original orchestral score. And Nainita? She didn't write this music for film or screen — she composed it for a landscape. For movement. He created and produced, ‘The Cork Dorks'. The show was hosted with Adam and his good friend Jeremy West. It was the first of its kind. It began focusing on central coast wineries but as the show grew, so did their ability to travel and meet other winemakers they found everywhere from Napa to Bordeaux that adopted that same Central Coast quality of people willing to share their wines, and their stories. As the area's producer's grew, soon Adam's interview's covered everything from spirits, craft beer, cider, cuisine, hospitality, and more. Fast forward to today, the spirit and enthusiasm cultivated with the award winning show, is reborn as The Pour with Adam Montiel, this time independently, and unfettered by corporate authority leaving it even more free to share the journey of making wine more approachable and fun for everyone. My guest today is Nainita Desai, the British composer for film, television and video games. Born and raised in London by her Indian parents, she earned a degree in mathematics, then studied sound design at the National Film and Television School. She started her career as a sound designer on the films Little Buddha, Lessons of Darkness and Death Machine, before branching into composition for television, including, among hundreds of others, the Oscar-nominated For Sama, the hit Netflix series American Murder and the BBC drama series Unprecedented. In 2022 she won the Emmy for ‘Outstanding Music Composition' for her work on The Reason I Jump, a film that explores the experiences of non-speaking autistic people around the world. More recently she has entered the world of video games, composing the scores for Telling Lies, Immortality, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and, most recently, Tales of Kenzera: Zau for which she has been nominated for a World Soundtrack Award. Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode, Michael speaks with Alex Smalley, an expert in Environmental Psychology and researcher at the University of Exeter. Alex's research program explores, in his words, “the cognitive and emotional impacts of virtual encounters with the natural world”. He has collaborated extensively with the BBC in the UK, including in the creation of a wonderful podcast entitled “The Healing Power of Nature”. An important take-away from Alex's work is that virtual experiences with nature can have a positive impact on our well-being, and that this effect is stronger for those with previous experiences with the natural environment itself. This undelies another important lesson, that virtual experiences in nature should be seen as an important complement of but not a substitute for the real world. But with many of us spending most of our time indoors, such a complement can prove to be very important, as Alex explains during the interview. Nainita Desai is an award-winning composer whose work has spanned creative formats, from documentaries like The Reason I Jump where she won an Emmy for Outstanding Music Composition, to TV series like Funny Women, to video games like Telling Lies and Immortality. With over 150 credits to her name, Nainita is nothing short of prolific. In the following interview, Nainita talks about her journey into becoming a composer and how Peter Gabriel impacted her career. While we don't touch on her education in mathematics, it plays a vital role in her career as a composer, guiding her interest in sound design as well as composition. From here, our discussion leads into talking about the role of nature in her work, as heard in films like The Deepest Breath, and the 2024 Sundance award-winning film Nocturnes. In both of these films, the role of the ocean and the mountains is as important as the world of the people we are following, and Nainita talks about the way that she reflects those characters journeys in her compositions.Equally important is the role that silence plays in her work. Nainita talks about the role that silence plays as the unspoken instrument for a composer, and how important it is to relinquish the score to amplify the drama of a scene. As a flow on of this discussion point, Nainita talks about the difficulty of knowing that not all aspects of her score will end up in the final film. This wonderfully insightful conversation flows between creativity and personal journeys, with Nainita giving us an in depth look at the mind of a composer. This conversation was recorded ahead of Nainita's upcoming appearance at the Australian International Documentary Conference, which opens in Melbourne on 3 March 2024. Nainita will be presenting a discussion called The Art of Composing for Documentary with Nainita Desai, alongside moderator Emma Bortignon. As we close out this interview, I asked Nainita about the importance of being accessible for interviews and panel discussions, which leads Nainita to reflect on the role of being a mentor for emerging composers, particularly women composers. Born in Coventry but evacuated to Preston during the Blitz, Delia cites the sound of air raid sirens as inspiring her interest in electronic sound. She went on to study Maths and Music at Cambridge University and launched her career at the BBC in 1960 as a trainee Studio Manager. She moved to the Radiophonic Workshop in 1962, where she spent the next 11 years developing experimental sounds and music for their TV and radio shows, in addition to working as a freelancer on film, theatre and other live projects. Her most famous work is her electronic arrangement of Ron Grainer's Doctor Who theme, created in 1963.Delia composed and produced electronic music using tape, plus early synthesis and sampling methods before specific instruments were created for these purposes. Her work has influenced and inspired many modern artists including The Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Portishead, Nainita Desai, Amon Tobin and Cosey Fanni Tutti, while Pink Floyd, Orbital and Hannah Peel have reinterpreted her work.Mark Ayres BiogMark Ayres is a composer, arranger, sound designer, mixer and mastering engineer. Mark wrote incidental music for Doctor Who in the 1980s. More recently he wrote the music for, sound-designed and mixed the reconstructed 'lost' Tom Baker adventure, “Shada”, and a celebratory feature length version of the original 1963 “Daleks” serial transmitted on BBC4 on 23rd November 2023, Doctor Who's 60th birthday. He has also composed for television and film including scores for 1996 feature "The Innocent Sleep" and the more recent "Scar Tissue".Mark was involved in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's final days and went on to become their archivist. A personal friend of Delia Derbyshire, he was entrusted with her personal archive after her death in 2001, which is now on permanent loan to the University of Manchester John Rylands Library and accessible for study. He is a Trustee of the Delia Derbyshire Day Charity. His devotion to the Workshop after Doctor Who ceased broadcasting in 1989 proved vital in regenerating interest in their work, and he is now the driving force behind their live revival on the festival circuit and in the creation of new works including the score for Matthew Holness' disturbing psychological horror film, "Possum". He has produced and mastered many recordings for Silva Screen Records and others, and his work remastering classic television programmes including Doctor Who, Quatermass, and the films of Ken Russell and Alan Clarke for broadcast, DVD and Blu-ray, including 5.1 remixes of many titles, has been highly acclaimed.David Butler BiogDavid Butler is a Senior Lecturer in Drama and Film Studies at the University of Manchester. He helped to bring the Delia Derbyshire Archive to the John Rylands Library, Manchester in 2007 and is one of the archive's lead researchers and curators. David is the chair of trustees for Delia Derbyshire Day and helped set up the charity in 2016.Cosey Fanni Tutti BiogCosey Fanni Tutti is a musician and writer, best known for her part in experimental electronic bands Throbbing Gristle and Chris & Cosey. Cosey interacted with the Delia Derbyshire Archive when she composed the soundtrack for Caroline Catz's film 'Delia Derbyshire: The Myths And The Legendary Tapes' and in the writing of her book Re-Sisters: The Lives and Recordings of Delia Derbyshire, Margery Kempe and Cosey Fanni Tutti published by Faber in 2022.https://www.coseyfannitutti.com/Caro C BiogCaro C is an artist, engineer and teacher specialising in electronic music. We finally get to talk about a video game score for the first time in the podcast's history! And yet, we're still intimately connected to the realm of moviemaking considering the subject material: Immortality, the new game from Sam Barlow, who made Her Story and Telling Lies. Keeping with the interactive-movie brief of those previous games, Immortality is a time/genre-spanning mystery that tasks you with poring over the raw footage of three films starring a young actress named Marissa Marcel, who disappeared without a trace. By jumping from clip to clip between these films -- late-'60s erotic religious thriller Ambrosio, 1970s detective film Minsky, and 1999 showbiz tragedy Two of Everything -- you peel back the layers of Marissa's fate, and explore the very nature of media as a means to achieve eternal life. For this project, Barlow enlisted the aid of twice-Emmy-nominated composer Nainita Desai, who also scored Telling Lies, to build the musical world of Immortality. Rather than scoring to genre specificity, Desai built three major themes exploring unique ideas spread among the three films: religion, life, and art. And, of course, she finds ways to subvert and play with those ideas, giving her lush, suspenseful orchestrations a feeling of cohesion while guiding the player through the emotional journey we share with Marissa. I was delighted to have Nainita on the show to talk about her journey, her influences, her unique working relationship with Barlow, and the cinematic influences she drew from as she stitched these three celluloid worlds together. (Plus, stay tuned for track commentaries breaking down these motifs in greater depth.) You can find Nainita Desai on her official website here. Immortality is available to play on Steam, Netflix Games, and Xbox (free on Day One if you have Game Pass) You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Lakeshore Records.

In this episode, our host Anna Smith takes the feminist film conversation to new heights by climbing into the world of sport. We take a look at the empowering documentary The Wall - Climb for Gold, which centres on the lives, perseverance and determination of four female athletes, as they prepare for and compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. While the focus is on climbers, this is a human story that everyone can relate to. To unpack this inspiring story about endurance and overcoming obstacles, Anna is joined by climber Shauna Coxsey MBE, composer Nainita Desai and editor Emily West. Shauna discusses her experience of watching the film for the first time and seeing the audience reactions to it. Having grown up watching sports with her dad, Shauna reveals that a French film about a climber inspired her to take up the sport. Following on from that, Nainita delves into the creative process behind her score as a microcosm for what it means to be human and the ways in which her score reflects the different personalities of all four women. Editor Emily West reveals when she got involved in the editing process and the importance of having a female gaze to tell a story about women. The Wall - Climb for Gold is available now on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video. The soundtrack is available on Spotify as four separate singles - each one reflecting the personality and journey of the four athletes in the film: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6yyzlTFjuZqptozK4Q9wHO Become a patron of Girls on Film on Patreon here: www.patreon.com/girlsonfilmpodcast Follow us on socials: www.instagram.com/girlsonfilm_podcast/ www.facebook.com/girlsonfilmpodcast www.twitter.com/GirlsOnFilm_Pod www.twitter.com/annasmithjourno Watch Girls On Film on the BFI's YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLX…L89QKZsN5Tgr3vn7z Girls On Film is an HLA production. Nainita Desia has achieved so much in the last few years that I don't even know where to begin. So let's just start with 2019 - she was the IFMCA's Breakthrough Composer Of The Year, nominated for Best Score at the British Independent Film Awards, and was the composer for Oscar nominated and BAFTA, Cannes, BIFA and SXSW winning documentary “FOR SAMA” which features some of the most complicated subject matter a composer will ever encounter. My talk with Nainita was so enlightening; I hope you take away as much from the interview as I did. Nainita Desai is a British composer and sound designer who has scored countless bespoke scores for film and TV including: BBC, HBO, ITV and C4. She has studied the sitar, piano, guitar, tabla and violin. She has worked with artists such as Tori Amos, Peter Gabriel and Sinead O'Connor. Some of her recent scoring projects include the WWII thriller, ENEMY WITHIN, the psychological horror film DARKNESS VISIBLE and THE LIFE AFTER. Another recent project is for the 2018 film UNTAMED ROMANIA, the most successful non-fiction film in Romania. It premiered at the Transylvania Film Festival 2018.UNTAMED ROMANIA is a film that reveals the beauty of the European country as it is, raw, magical but fragile at the same time. The film focuses on the beautiful unspoiled lands tucked within the country but moreover on the numerous forms of wildlife that live there and how their lives are dictated by the seasons. It is a never ending battle for survival and Untamed Romania tells their stories. The film will made its international debut on 18th of March in Washington, at an ecological film festival and on 12th of April in London, at the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) gala. In this episode, Nainita Desai talks about the unique challenges and opportunities afforded to her through UNTAMED ROMANIA - writing her first score for a large scale orchestra. Desai discusses in detail how she reveals the characters of the animals through her musical themes and, in contrast, how the music she wrote for the various landscapes depicted was directly influenced by those landscapes themselves. Finally, she reveals which piece was the most difficult and how Untamed Romania was different from all of the other documentary scores she has written before.ANNOTATED TRACKS / SEGMENTS02:59 - Main Theme06:00 - Fire Salamander08:21 - Bear Mischief09:20 - Catch the Mayfly10:36 - Wild Boar and Wolves13:43 - A Chrysalis Awakens15:47 - Golden Eagle18:06 - Autumn ApproachesSOUNDTRACKA soundtrack release is imminent, but an official release date has yet to be announced.MORE ABOUT THE COMPOSERYou can find out more about and hear more music by Nainita Desai at their official site http://nainitadesai.com/ or follow her on Twitter @nainitadesaiABOUT THE ANNOTATORProduced by Christopher Coleman (@ccoleman) and you can Find more episodes at THEANNOTATOR.NET or you can subscribe via iTunes, Stitcher Radio or wherever you find quality podcasts.FOLLOW USTwitter @audioannotatorFacebook @TheAnnotatorEmail theannotatorpodcast@gmail.comSUBSCRIBEiTunesSpotifyStitcher RadioRadioPublicGoogle Play PodcastsRSS Feed
