Welcome to October 17, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate second chances and perfect pairs.  A mulligan is a do over or a chance to hit the reset button. In golf it's a term that means taking a second shot if things don't go according to plan. No one is exactly sure which Mulligan gave us this term whether it was David Mulligan from Canada, John “Buddy” Mulligan from New Jersey or Thomas Mulligan from Ireland. All three were passionate about the game of golf and all three knew the value of blowing off a bad shot. It's never too late to reframe your thinking with a fresh perspective or a brand new start, on or off the golf course. On National Mulligan Day, give yourself a break and tee up a whole new outlook.  Italians had been enjoying their pasta for centuries before someone came up with the idea for a dried version of the food. This simple innovation allowed the pasta to keep longer and it soon made its way around the world on Italian ships. In the 1500s, explorers brought back tomatoes from the Americas, and you would think that's where the pairing of red sauce and pasta got its start. But people thought tomatoes were poisonous, and it was nearly 200 years before someone incorporated them into Italian cuisine. Since then, pasta and tomato sauce have been forever linked. On National Pasta Day celebrate with your favorite pairing of pasta and sauce. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. Indie singer/songwriter Rorie Kelly has been compared to Joni Mitchell and Sara Bareilles for her catchy-confessional songwriting style, and to Alanis Morissette and Janis Joplin for her raw powerhouse vocals. She checked in with Robin Renée to talk about life as a full-time indie musician, the entrepreneurial drive that makes it possible, and the activist determination that fuels many of the songs as well as challenging conversations on and off the stage. Rorie also shares about her latest single, "Alternative Facts," the hopeful "If You Teach a Bird to Sing," exploring spirituality, and more. The Leftscape takes a breather from the anxiety-filled news cycle this week to report on two happy happenings and positive actions in the world -- the sweet, inspiring Spread the Love! project that is being documented on Instagram, and the wickedly funny activism of Cards Against Humanity Hacks the Election. This Day in History recalls the 1814 London Beer Flood and the OPEC Oil Embargo and subsequent gas rationing in 1973. Birthdays include Ziggy Marley, Gary Puckett, Irene Ryan, Arthur Miller, Evel Knievel, and Eminem. National Spaghetti Day - How it Came to Be: January 4th, Ep4Welcome to episode 4 of the Weird, Wacky, and Traditional Holiday Show: How They Came to Be”. I’m your host, Stephen Carter. With each daily episode, we identify at least one of the official or unofficial holidays celebrated that day and explore how that day came to be. Today’s featured holiday is, well, I gave it away already, National Spaghetti Day!Here are a few fun facts about pasta in general and my favorite food in particular.•There’s evidence that food similar to pasta noodles was eaten in China starting about 5,000 B.C.•The first written record of what we now call pasta appeared in the Jewish Talmud in the 5th Century A.D.•There is evidence a form of pasta similar to today’s spaghetti appeared in Sicily in the 12 Century A.D.•Contrary to popular history, Marco Pollo did not introduce pasta to Europeans. •Thomas Jefferson brought pasta back to the United States when he returned from Naples, Italy in 1789. •Spaghetti became popular in the United States when Italians began immigrating in large numbers in the late 19th Century.•According to the International Pasta Organization, the annual per capita consumption of pasta in the U.S. is close to 20 lbs. Annual per capita consumption in Italy, is a whopping 57 lbs. I can tell you, I’m doing my best to raise that number in the United States! When Was National Spaghetti Day Born? When was National Spaghetti day born? Alas, despite diligent research by many people, we don’t know. We do know there is no Presidential or Congressional declaration. There is also another day pasta lovers should know about. October 17, is National Pasta Day. Unfortunately, the origins of that holiday are also lost in the historical mist. Again, there’s no Presidential or Congressional proclamation about National Pasta Day.Proclamations or not, I for one am happy to celebrate both days by enjoying a heaping helping of spaghetti on January 4th, on October 17th, and on as many other days as possible. If you decide to cook up a spaghetti meal or you simply want to share your love of this delicious pasta on Twitter, use the hash tag  #NationalSpaghettiDay.Speaking of gustatory delights, join us tomorrow, January 5th to learn about National Whipped Cream Day!
