Over the last two decades, Shachar has helped to build and scale global brands, including Meta Reality Labs, Bumble, Snapchat, and Apple. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Shachar turned to women's politics, and helped to legalize emergency contraception through Planned Parenthood with John F. Kerry. That led her to develop the brand for the century-old women's organization, NCJW, the group responsible for Head Start, Meals on Wheels and Benchmark - preserving our Pro-Choice Bench. From there she went to Columbia University in New York, where she led marketing and communication for student services while getting her Master of Science in Strategic Communications. She spent six years leading digital and marketing strategy at several media and creative companies in New York, including Digitas, Deep Focus, and StrawberryFrog. In 2011, Shachar was recruited by Apple Inc. to lead market development strategy for Apple's digital advertising platform. She left Apple in 2014 to become a Managing Director at a venture and creative capital firm, West, where she ran the company's portfolio in New York before joining Snap Inc in 2017 to lead Global Brand Marketing. During her time at Snap, she defined the role that marketing plays in driving growth and revenue for the company. At the end of 2020, she joined Bumble as Vice President of Global Marketing, overseeing brand marketing, product marketing, community marketing, brand partnerships, and their expansion into 150 markets. At the end of 2021, she joined Meta's Reality Labs. Today, as Vice President, Marketing she leads brand and integrated marketing team across VR (Meta Quest), VR content (Oculus Studios, Beat Saber), AR (Ray Ban Stories), Metaverse (Horizon Worlds, Avatars) and Work (Meta Work Portfolio, Quest for Business). In addition to her professional marketing leadership, she serves as the Chairwomen of the Board of Directors for SAY.org and as an Independent Board Director at TouchTunes. She lives in Venice, California with her husband, Jason, and is the proud mom of Morgan + Riley, her 10-year old twins. She is originally from Israel and immigrated to America in 1985.

In recent days, it has become clear that the future of reproductive justice in the United States is at risk. With the possibility of Roe v. Wade being overturned, many organizations are speaking out publicly, to ensure continued access to safe abortions around the country. From abortion, to birth control, to LGBTQ+ issues, the Jewish faith informs many advocates, leaders, and believer's work on sexual and reproductive health and rights. Rabbi Danya Ruttenburg, Scholar in Residence at the National Council of Jewish Women, sits down with us to talk about the ways Judaism and reproductive health and rights intersect. Judaism teaches that abortion is permitted and is often required if the life of the pregnant person is threatened. Some stories in Jewish texts make it explicitly clear that, if the head has not emerged from the body, the life of the pregnant person takes precedent. Other stories in ancient texts describe the permitted use of medication abortion. In Jewish communities, these are the stories that inform conversations relating to conception, personhood, and the question of when life begins. In the more patriarchal communities in Judaism, many practitioners approach Rabbis for permission to use birth control and continue to tie birth control usage to marriage status. Still, while Judaism has threads of pro-natalism and patriarchy within it, contraception is a much less hot-button topic than in Catholicism. In fact, when it comes to birth control, many methods are described in the Talmud. These methods include the mokh (an absorbent, wool insert) as well as the kos shel ikkarin (an herbal mix made up of roots).  Many scholars argue that mentions of LGBTQ+ issues in Jewish writings are consistently up to interpretation. The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) has been attacking common sense life protections for unborn children and their moms in a pro-life bill in the Kentucky house. We share an opinion piece written by a NCJW state lobbyist published in the Courier Journal. The distorted lies and propaganda in this opinion piece were repeated in house debate, so we reached out to the sponsor of the bill and the director of Kentucky Right to Life to offer our educational materials to help them respond to Jewish pro-abortion attacks on life and state representatives in the house. During the episode, we share Bonnie Chernin's rebuttal published in Renew America (her submission request to the Courier Journal was declined.) We also share the letter that the JPLF created to submit to the Journal; however, after learning that the editor has a history of declining pro-life pieces and submissions by out of state authors, we sent the letter to Kentucky Right to Life to educate Assembly members and to submit to the Journal, if possible. We share our March Flyer sporting Mordecai's appeal to Queen Esther to show courage and stand up for Jewish lives against state sponsored genocide. We welcome our friend and colleague, Sheila Katz, to the show. Sheila Katz is the CEO of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), a network of 180,000 advocates across the U.S. and Israel advancing the rights of women, children, and families. This week's podcast features Profiles in Leadership Community Award Winner, Suzi Greenman! Throughout a distinguished career in public relations, real estate, and as development director and executive director for nonprofit organizations; Suzi has always made time to take on and excel at various leadership roles as a volunteer: During her tenure (1999-2001) as one of the few women board presidents of Dallas' Temple Emanu-El, Suzi led successful measures to improve accessibility. She also initiated and recruited leadership for Temple's Jacob's Ladder project whose goal was to help low income, middle-aged women without high school diplomas obtain their GEDs and find employment. In 1992, Suzi was recognized as a JCPenney Golden Rule Award finalist for her leadership in the Junior League's and National Council of Jewish Women's (NCJW) Paths to Prevention program, featuring a city-wide conference, with representation from every sector of the community as participants, aimed at combatting substance abuse among Dallas County youth. From 2007-2009, for NCJW and in partnership with TRAC (Transition Resource Action Center of City Square), Suzi co-initiated the WACHS (Women's Access to Comprehensive Health Services) program which developed and delivered a sex education curriculum for teens aging out of foster care. Suzi excelled at fundraising for organizations and charities she believed in during a time when women were not typically welcomed in these roles. As a National Board member of Girls, Inc. and chair of its Development Committee (1990's), she brought in a record amount in contributions and grants. Suzi is a visionary leader who motivates organizations to identify community needs and then implement ways of addressing them. While living in NewYork and serving as public affairs chair of the Junior League, a top issue was efforts to pass the Equal Rights Amendment for women. Suzi led delegations to lobby for the ERA with state legislators. As a woman who has successfully and consistently juggled career, community service and family obligations, Suzi is a role model for future generations.
