1983 proved a pivotal year in violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky's life. That was the year the Azerbaijan-born musician became a U.S. citizen, married his wife, and bought the Stradivarius violin he still plays to this day. It was also the year he discovered Glenn Gould's final recording of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations. That album inspired Sitkovetsky to arrange the Baroque keyboard masterpiece for string orchestra — a project that would forever change the trajectory of his career as a musical artist. "My transcription gave me a whole other life parallel to my performing career," Sitkovetsky says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "I'm the fourth generation of professional musicians [in my family], so it was pretty much determined I should play violin and become a concert artist. But that year changed that a great deal. I diversified." Now, 40 years later, Sitkovetsky has become a multi-hyphenate to the nth degree. In addition to his work as a solo violinist and transcriber, he's a sought-after conductor, music director, and educator; founder of the New European Strings Chamber Orchestra; and host of Medici.tv's interview series It Ain't Necessarily So — where he's sat down with some of the greatest musicians of our time, including Yefim Bronfman, Barbara Hendricks, and Sir Neville Marriner. In this episode, we discuss how being a student of history informs Sitkovetsky's music-making and what's in store for his final season as music director of the Greensboro Symphony, an ensemble he's led for 20 years. Plus, he shares the earphones he can't live without while traveling, his favorite New York City restaurant for feasting on sturgeon and caviar, and how he sees his career as being "a keeper of the flame" for classical music. — Classical Post uncovers the creativity behind exceptional music. Thinking Cap Theatre's Artistic Director Nicole Stodard Ph.D talks with Matthew Sturgis, author of biography Oscar Wilde: A Life. MATTHEW STURGIS BIO Matthew Sturgis is an historian and biographer, the author of Acclaimed Lives of Aubrey Beardsley and Walter Sickert, as well as Passionate Attitudes, a history of the English Decadence of the 1890s. He has also written a study of Biblical archaeology – It Ain't Necessarily So – and a history of Hampton Court Palace to tie in with a Channel 4 series. He has contributed to the TLS, Daily Telegraph and Independent on Sunday. He is a member of the Oscar Wilde Society and contributes reviews to their journal The Wildean. His major biography of OSCAR WILDE was published by Head of Zeus in 2018. ABOUT THE BOOK The fullest, most textural, most accurate—most human—account of Oscar Wilde's unique and dazzling life—based on extensive new research and newly discovered materials, from Wilde's personal letters and transcripts of his first trial to newly uncovered papers of his early romantic (and dangerous) escapades and the two-year prison term that shattered his soul and his life. "Simply the best modern biography of Wilde." —Evening Standard Drawing on material that has come to light in the past thirty years, including newly discovered letters, documents, first draft notebooks, and the full transcript of the libel trial, Matthew Sturgis meticulously portrays the key events and influences that shaped Oscar Wilde's life, returning the man "to his times, and to the facts," giving us Wilde's own experience as he experienced it. Here, fully and richly portrayed, is Wilde's Irish childhood; a dreamy, aloof boy; a stellar classicist at boarding school; a born entertainer with a talent for comedy and a need for an audience; his years at Oxford, a brilliant undergraduate punctuated by his reckless disregard for authority . . . his arrival in London, in 1878, "already noticeable everywhere" . . . his ten-year marriage to Constance Lloyd, the father of two boys; Constance unwittingly welcoming young men into the household who became Oscar's lovers, and dying in exile at the age of thirty-nine . . . Wilde's development as a playwright. . . becoming the high priest of the aesthetic movement; his successes . . . his celebrity. . . and in later years, his irresistible pull toward another—double—life, in flagrant defiance and disregard of England's strict sodomy laws ("the blackmailer's charter"); the tragic story of his fall that sent him to prison for two years at hard labor, destroying his life and shattering his soul. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thinking-cap-theatre/support

It Ain't Necessarily So". --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/radioflowok/message

The Francis-Lee Duo conclude our Spring Series with a diverse and engaging programme spanning 150 years of wonderful music. They are Dr Charlotte Francis (violin) and Gemma Lee (piano). Beginning with Beethoven’s energetic 4th Violin sonata, they take us into rather unfamiliar territory with “L’Addio” by New Zealand composer Raffaello Squarise - or 'Old Square Eyes' – one of 'Dunedin's chief musical assets'. The 100th anniversary of Debussy’s death is acknowledged with his colourful and vibrant violin sonata and the programme concludes on a flashy and brilliant note with Jascha Heifetz’s arrangement of “It Ain’t Necessarily So” by Gershwin. Formed in 2016, Francis-Lee Duo consists of University of Auckland School of Music graduates, violinist Dr Charlotte Francis and pianist Gemma Lee. Both have gained individual successes in chamber music throughout New Zealand and overseas, and are rapidly gaining recognition locally as an exciting upcoming chamber ensemble.

It Ain't Necessarily So Our nation lives in a perpetual wrestling match with might opponents. Individually and collectively we are called to engage our personal, social, political and religious communities to bring about transformation for the common good of humanity. Really is this what we are called to? If so, how might the arts support us in the divine project of becoming fully human. Trust me, there is hope. Before becoming Minister for Faith in Action and then Parish Minister of the First Unitarian Church of Oakland, and before graduating from Starr King School for the Ministry, Rev. Duhart served as a social worker and military chaplain. She is exchanging pulpits with Rev. Buehrens. Rev. Jacqueline Duhart, Guest Minister Kat Liu, Worship Associate Larry Chinn, piano Asher, song leader Howard Oringer, Welcome Jonathan Silk, OOS, Sound, Worship Archives/Podcast

Peter Singer, atheist, author and Princeton professor, who is considered the world’s leading ethicist, joins us for an illuminating discussion on his book, “The Most Good You Can Do: How Effective Altruism Is Changing Ideas About Living Ethically,” and his newest book, “Ethics in the Real World.” We celebrate FFRF's winter solstice “equal time” displays now up in the Wisconsin State Capitol and Daley Plaza (in conjunction with our Chicago chapter), and report on a state/church victory to remove an unconstitutional nativity display in Michigan. In honor of the 120th anniversary of the birth of lyricist Ira Gershwin, we play Ira’s irreverent classic about the bible, "It Ain’t Necessarily So.”
Long standing member of the Philadelphia music scene and partner in Grammy Award winning MorningStar Studios, Lizanne Knott released a great new album earlier this year – the bluesy and jazzy “Excellent Day”. A smoky and sultry delight, it features eight original songs and four well-chosen covers… The Gershwins’ “Ain’t Necessarily So”, Springsteen’s “Stolen Car”, Janis Ian’s “Sometimes” and Jef Lee Johnson’s “Excellent Day”. Lizanne Knott joined us on Folk Roots Radio to chat about her music, the new album and, the fact that, despite critical acclaim, she’s still generally better known in the UK than North America. It’s time we change that! For more information, visit http://lizanneknott.com.
Episode #19: When people hear about the Recording Academy, some scratch their heads in wonder, while others immediately recognize them as the organization that puts on the Grammy Awards every year. However, both of these responses bely the true effort and intent behind the organization, as they are just as involved in awards shows as they are in advocacy for musicians on Capitol Hill and beyond. After several successful years of doing the music industry lobbying day, "Grammys On The Hill," the Recording Academy decided to take the model that they had developed for Washington, D.C. and bring that back to musician's home districts. This year represents the second time that "Grammys In My District" has happened, and we speak with three different players inside the organization about what's different about this year's event, and catch some soundbytes of the event that took place in Seattle on October 14. GUESTS Kris Orlowski (Musician) Daryl Friedman (The Recording Academy) Brandon Bush (Musician) MUSIC Gospel Music "Automobile" Xiu Xiu "Chocolate Makes You Happy" Kris Orlowski "It Ain't Necessarily So" Sugarland "Stuck Like Glue" Kinski "Flight Risk" Delta 5 "Mind Your Own Business"
