Artist as Leader
Shayok Misha Chowdhury on the bracing success of his "Public Obscenities"

Artist as Leader

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 5, 2024 26:12

One of the bona fide theatrical hits of 2023 was a play titled “Public Obscenities” by director-turned-playwright Shayok Misha Chowdhury. It opened at Soho Rep in Manhattan in January of 2023 to the kind of glowing reviews and audience responses a playwright can only dream of. The same production was remounted that fall at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington D.C., and as of this writing, it is currently running at Theatre for a New Audience in Brooklyn. A New York Times Critic's Pick from its first outing, the play continues to draw raves in its latest iteration. Helen Shaw of The New Yorker calls it a triumph. A few days after this interview, Misha won an Obie for his direction of the play, this after the play's cast received a 2023 Drama Desk Award for best ensemble. What makes the success of “Public Obscenities” so remarkable is that that there's nothing about the play that screams “Guaranteed Surefire Hit!” For one thing, with its relatively large cast of seven and with its multimedia elements, it's not cheap to produce. Then also it is bilingual, partly in English, partly in the playwright's native Bangla. Granted, Bangla is the sixth most spoken native language in the world (thank you, Wikipedia), but it is not a language familiar to most Americans. Plus, though sections of the play in which Bangla is spoken are supertitled, there are other scenes without any translations at all. Also, the play is very queer. It follows an Indian-American PhD candidate as he returns with his Black American boyfriend to a family home in Kolkata, India. There he plans to interview sexual minorities for his dissertation. The play is therefore very frank about sexuality and features two non-gender-conforming characters. And it's three hours long. But despite these details — or maybe exactly because of them — the play is an unqualified hit. Here Misha details how he hewed to his vision for the play no matter its evolving demands and hints at a road map for struggling theaters and the artists who wish to create work for their stages.https://www.shayokmishachowdhury.com/https://www.tfana.org/current-season/public-obscenities/overview

You see, Rose's father, the late ghost hunter Vincent Dooley, has imbued Rose with certain ‘talents' to divine and chat up ghosts that are giving people a hard time. That's when she's approached by one Martin Martin, a woodworker whose late wife has been making his life hell for the past several years, constantly berating him and his choices from beyond the grave. Martin's daughter Sarah is growing up and has ideas of her own.  At the same time, determined to sell his soul for a revived career, washed up American pop star Christian and his wife Claudia have been picking out virgins to sacrifice, and soon set their sights on Sarah Martin. On today's show we have, 'Yum Yum, Get Yourself Some', founder of Dan-O's seasoning, Dan Oliver.  Dan-O's Seasoning is changing the world one table at a time by offering the best all-natural, low-sodium seasoning products on the market.  Good things are born out of necessity, and the origins of Dan-O's seasoning are no different. Back when Dan Oliver, founder of Dan-O's, was in college, his mom gifted him a few cuts of bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs. Being a young and inexperienced cook, he was not sure what to do with them. The next day he and his buddy started throwing some spices on them and the next thing Dan knew, Dan-O's was born.  To keep up with all things Dan-O's Seasoning and to 'Yum Yum, Get Yourself Some', go to: www.danosseasing.com Up next is actress and singer Zoe Van Tieghem. Zoe is starring in the cabaret show: City Sounds on Monday, June 6, 2022, at BIRDLAND NYC at 8:30 PM. With a style that's reminiscent of the emotions we felt from the early 90's R&B, Jasmine Jordan spreads messages of self-love, love of others, and women empowerment. With incredible range, storytelling, and passion, Jordan captivates audiences with relatable narratives that convey love's enthralling and heartbreaking dynamics. Jordan grew up in Lacy Washington, where her love of music was influenced by R&B and POP sensations Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Tamia, and Alicia Keys. She released her first EP in January 2015 and has since then gone on three west coast tours, opened up for Grammy-nominated R&B singer Joe and released another EP called 'Things Change', followed by consistent releases of new singles. Her first single of 2018 was a female empowerment anthem for every woman's Summer playlist titled 'Beloved'. This R&B track embodies and emotes the superhero strength every woman has: the power of discernment. Followed by: 'Forbidden Fruit' and the latest single 'Choose Wisely', both R&B tracks that embody and emote the human in all of us. Jordan is now gearing up to release this new project 'Innermission'. Influenced by POP, HipHop, Soul, R&B, and Groove. These elements can all be heard in her newest project which walks us through the self-love journey she has been on. A journey that has helped her embrace imperfection, heartbreak, hope, passion, sensitivity, love, and the complexities that come with being on a journey with the goal of becoming her most whole version. 'Innermission' is her most honest project to date.  To keep up with all that she's doing, follow her on the web at: www.jasminejordanmusic.com Thank you for listening and follow our show on IG at: The Big Fat Joey Show.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Harris about her career as a playwright and how her passion for telling stories about black people shines through all of her work. Aleshea Harris' play Is God Is (directed by Taibi Magar at Soho Rep.) won the 2016 Relentless Award, an Obie Award for playwriting in 2017, the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award in 2019, was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and made The Kilroys' List of “the most recommended un and underproduced plays by trans and female authors of color” for 2017. What to Send Up When It Goes Down (directed by Whitney White, produced by The Movement Theatre Company), a play-pageant-ritual response to anti-Blackness, had its critically-acclaimed NYC premiere in 2018, was featured in the April 2019 issue of American Theatre Magazine and was nominated for a Drama Desk award. Harris was awarded a Samuel French Next Step Award in 2019, the Windham-Campbell Literary Prize and the Steinberg Playwriting Award in 2020 and the Hermitage Greenfield Prize in 2021. She has performed her own work at the St. Mary's College, Edinburgh and Orlando Fringe Festivals, REDCAT and as part of La Fête du Livre at La Comèdie de Saint-Étienne. Jillian Walker writes and often performs contemporary sacred texts for the now times. Her work creates space for healing and liberation; embodying remembrance for our ancestors and legacies. Often taking the form of plays, musicals, sacred lecture-sermon-concert gatherings, and self-reflective space, Jillian’s work pushes what we think of as genre and blurs the perceived boundaries between performer, audience and self. She draws deeply on her training as a dramaturg (MFA Columbia), Black Spiritual wisdom, and the ongoing work of black feminist thinkers to bring process-driven performance to life. Some of her works include: Sarah’s Salt. (developed at MCC Theater, Roundabout Theater Company; Honorable Mention for the Relentless Award; finalist for the 2019 Bay Area Playwrights Festival). Songs of Speculation, presented at JACK; and “Blue Ink: A Night with Jillian Walker” performed at Joe’s Pub. Her ancestor-revering work, SKiNFoLK: An American Show (co-presented by The Bushwick Starr and National Black Theatre) was a NY Times Critics’ Pick. Some of her collaborations and dramaturgical works include: co-writing for Common’s 2019 international tour, “Let Love Tour”, dramaturgy for the award-winning musical, Rags Parkland Sings the Songs of The Future and dramaturgy for Dave Malloy’s Moby-Dick, directed by Rachel Chavkin. She is currently developing work with the High Line, The TEAM, Musical Theater Factory (MTF Makers), Ars Nova (Makers Lab), and Soho Rep., where she is the 2020-21 Tow Playwright-in-Residence. Sometimes it’s hard to know whether a statement should be taken literally or not. For instance, the Nature Theater of Oklahoma is not from the Sooner State, it’s based here in New York.  On the other hand, its current show, Life and Times: Episodes 1-4 could hardly be more literal.  One member of the experimental theater company (named from a reference in a Kafka) told her life story over the phone and that conversation – not the story told in the conversation, but the conversation itself – has been turned into a four-part theatrical presentation totaling some eight hours by presented by Soho Rep at the Public Theater. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood shares his impressions of what is, by any measure, a most unusual theatrical event.

Our guests -- Jonathan Bank, Artistic Director of The Mint Theater, Sarah Benson, Artistic Director of Soho Rep., Susan Bernfield, Artistic Director of New Georges and David Van Asselt, Artistic Director of Rattlestick Playwrights Theater -- all share the distinction of running theatres that are quite different from Broadway...venues with 99 seats or under. They discuss their mission statements and how each of their companies got started; making sure they are able to balance new voices in playwriting with more established writers when choosing and presenting plays; how, instead of competing with one another, their companies serve as resources for each other; the wealth of material, and talent, available to them; who their base audiences are and marketing strategies for broadening that base; funding challenges, particularly in difficult financial times; the pros and cons of subscriptions for their companies; how pricing structure for their smaller theatres affects the bottom line; and their goals for expansion beyond their current theatre size.
