History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 85: Mistah F.A.B. has been at the center of the Bay Area hip-hop scene since he splashed on the scene as the Crown Prince of Hyphy in the early 2000s. Growing up in North Oakland, FAB's parents were in the street life but pushed him towards a different route. This led him to developing his talent as a rapper, putting out his first album "Nig-Latin" through Straight Hits Entertainment with Jazzy Jim and Gary Archer. This eventually led to him catching the attention of Mac Dre, and FAB's debut album "Son of a Pimp" dropped on Thizz Entertainment. This conversation about FAB's early career is like a history of Bay Area rap in itself, touching on artists like Andre Nickatina, The Jacka, Souls of Mischief, Too Short, Messy Marv, and many more. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Introduction 05:13 Fab's parents in the street life 14:52 Choosing not to get in the streets 20:10 North Oakland history 24:00 Starting to rap 31:59 Gary Archer & D-Ray 34:09 “Nig Latin” album 38:53 Meeting Mac Dre 46:37 Andre Nickatina 49:40 “Super Sick Wid It” 56:39 “Son of a Pimp” album 58:58 Kanye West, Wake Up Show 1:02:48 “Backpack rap;” Souls of Mischief 1:10:20 The Freestyle King 1:16:12 Freestyle battles 1:21:25 The New Bay & the Hyphy Movement 1:26:54 Messy Marv 1:33:02 Hyphy era hits 1:36:27 Getting banned from KMEL 1:46:07 Ghost Ride It video 1:49:57 The Jacka 1:57:45 Community work --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

The fiercely independent nature of the Bay Area music scene has proven to have both positive and adverse effects on the creativity and overall commercial success of the Hyphy Movement. In episode 5 of Remember the Time, titled, Is Hyphy Dead?, host Branden LSK speaks with artists and label executives about why the movement was somewhat short-lived—from the politics of competing radio stations to other regions capitalizing on the hyphy sound, and thus diluting its aural authenticity. Expect to hear from Mistah F.A.B., Too $hort, LaRussell, hip-hop journalist, Eric Arnold; No Vultures podcast host, Lord Rab and more.
Although E-40 is the mainstream face of the Hyphy Movement, Northern California residents view another rapper as the anchor of Hyphy. He went by Mac Dre. This episode of Remember the Time breaks down the larger-than-life persona of the late rapper—from his pre-and-post incarceration sound to his Thizz Entertainment empire.Host Branden LSK speaks with rapper LaRussell about Mac Dre's cultural impact and speaks with Steph Curry about his forthcoming documentary on the artist. Expect to hear from Hyphy pioneer E-40; rapper, Keak Da Sneak; hip-hop consultant, Wendy Day; radio personality, Big Von; rapper Mistah F.A.B, producer Droop-E and more.
Steiny & Guru chat with 3x Platinum Artist & Oakland Native Fabby Davis Jr. aka Mistah F.A.B. about how the Warriors have been such an amazing story, to start. Plus, Fab shares the work he's doing with his local community and the greater Bay Area.
Been gone for a minute but we are finally back with another new and funny episode of the podcast. We kick things off with LL Cool J's comments on rappers retiring on Sway In The Morning. Before kicking a freestyle on the show, he talks about how rap isn't a sport and calls out those who flirt with want to retire as a way of being bored with their careers. The marauders give their take on LL's words on retirement and why we shouldn't fall for it. After that, we talk about ageism in hip hop today after rapper Asian Doll wrote in a now deleted post on Twitter/X that people who are trying to make it in rap at/over the age of 30 is crazy. With the word going around thanks to DJ Akademics, other rappers sounded off on the post through social media as well. Nick and Jared give their thoughts on Asian Doll's post and also comment on Gillie Da Kid's comment on stop rapping past the age of 35 months ago on his podcast. Plus they ask if there should be an age limit on people trying to rap and make it in the rap game. Later, after celebrating 50 years of rap/hip hop on August 11th, many publications from Rolling Stone to Complex have made lists on the best rappers/groups/songs of all time by celebrating. Rappers have also voiced their opinions on some lists and some have even ask people on why certain rappers haven't made these lists and ask why they were overlooked. California rapper Mistah F.A.B. asked while watching the Hip Hop 50 concert from Yankee Stadium why MC Hammer wasn't a part of the show due to his contributions in the early 90s. Producer Pete Rock, asked why his late cousin Heavy D didn't get his name onto any lists after what Pete Rock said Heavy D did for the genre. We ask who should have been recognized more out of the two legends on these lists. All that a brand new game with hip hop videos, laughs, album recommendations, shout outs and more!! The end of the year invariably means lists upon lists of best-ofs.. “Best music” could mean songs you kept on repeat, those best-selling tracks you couldn't avoid, or the tunes that touched your heart in ways nothing else could. For some, it was the mega-hits such as Bad Bunny's “Titi Me Pregunto,” Harry Styles' “As it Was” or Beyonce's “Break My Soul.” For other listeners, it was local stars like Zyah Belle, Mistah F.A.B. or Brijean. We'll take a beat to appreciate the music that tickled our eardrums in 2022. Guests: Nastia Voynovskaya, associate editor, KQED Arts Suzy Exposito, music reporter, Los Angeles Times Adrian Spinelli, new music columnist, San Francisco Chronicle; staff writer, Uproxx
