Robert Kuang arrived in the US from Beijing at an early age and often found escape in stories. A trained classical pianist, Robert eventually found his voice as a storyteller, studying Film, Television, & Theatre Production at the University of Colorado and earning his MFA in Dramatic Writing at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Robert has written for Kpopstarz and the Huffington Post. Eventually Robert found that coaching was a place where he could bring his whole self instead of just his musician self, writer self or other parts of himself that were brought in isolation to other settings. After exploring the concept of integration, Robert attended a retreat with the Good Life Project and gained his first introduction to working with a coach. Robert began exploring coach training programs and enrolled in the Accomplishment Coaching training program and went on to launch Robert Kuang Coaching. As a coach, Robert believes that you are alive and present for a reason. Through practical and compassionate examination, Robert will support clients make abundant choices toward uncompromising completion of their goals...to step out of their comfort zone and find possibility. Michelle Ward, aka the When I Grow Up Coach, has literally made a career out of staying true to herself, and helping others do the same. Michelle's dream from childhood was to be on Broadway, but after graduating from NYU's Tisch School and going to audition after audition, she realized to her dismay that it was not likely to happen for her. She decided she needed to find something that worked for her—that was true to her creative spirit and fed her soul—and that she wanted to help others do the same. She joined me to tell her story and how it's led her to something unexpectedly perfect for her, and what she learned along the way, from the power of authenticity when auditioning to figuring out what else might meet her creative goals when acting fell through.

Deborah Kaplan is a bad ass. A true Hollywood veteran writer and director. And how cool! This is the 20th anniversary of “Can’t Hardly Wait”. I’m talking teen-cinema in all of it’s glory. So, what does it take to be able to tap into the teen zeitgeist of the time – decade after decade? Tune in and find out! With her partner Harry Elfont, Deborahcreated Liza On Demand starring the mega-talent Liza Koshy, on YouTube Originals and it’s totally brilliant. Last year I was hooked on MTV’s Mary and Jane about two Eagle Rock pot delivery girls - and oh, you’ll hear about producer Snoop Dogg’s preferred craft service spread of choice (you can smoke it). She’s a single mom, a working boss lady and my beautiful and aspirational expander. Deb is also the funniest person on IG and oh, she can cook like nobody’s biz. But that’s a side note. @deborahkaplan FRESH FROM IMDB where I do all my best stalking! It’s prob out dated and mostly wrong but you’ll get the idea. Writer/director Deborah Kaplan met partner, writer/director Harry Elfont, at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts' prestigious film school. In a strange coincidence, they discovered that their parents were friends and that they both attended neighboring high schools in Philadelphia. Kaplan had spent time abroad in high school at a film production program at Oxford University in England, UK. Kaplan relocated to Los Angeles and was working behind the scenes in the movie business. When Elfont headed to California after college, they joined forces and crafted "The Family Way", a romantic comedy that was purchased by Can't Hardly Wait (1998) producer Jenno Topping, during her stint at The Ladd Company. The writing duo continued working with Topping, writing A Very Brady Sequel(1996). Kaplan and Elfont also lent their talents as contributing writers to Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco (1996) and Jingle All the Way (1996). In her spare time, Kaplan enjoys kick-boxing, photography, and hiking with her Mongolian Ferret Hound. Can't Hardly Wait (1998) was both Kaplan and Elfont's directorial debut. Manny and Lindsay take on a subject that many independent filmmakers are unaware of this week, and that is Development Funds. This area of your budget is not always necessary, and it depends on what your film budget is actually going to be. What are development funds? Where does this money come from? When do you pay it back (if at all)? How does this affect your films budget as a whole? Where do you investors fit into this fund? As part of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Women Filmmakers series, we sat in on the "Working Above the Micro-Budget Level" Workshop with Naomi McDougall Jones and Sarah Wharton where this was discussed. So we got this straight from two sources who have done it themselves, and we are here to share what we learned with you. Catch us at the Severed VHS Trade and Short Film Night, this Saturday May 27th, where we will be premiering our new short film, Knock Knock, and we will have a table for the day. Grab tickets here: www.shermantheater.com/?e=event&eventId=21952&rDate=5/27/2017 And Sunday May 28th, you can see our new film Theta States at the First Contact Film Festival at 2:40pm, along with a full day of other indie horror and scifi films. Tickets are $10 for the day, and you can get them here: filmfreeway.com/festival/firstcontact/tickets Subscribe to us on iTunes, Stitcher, YouTube, Google Play, or your favorite podcatching app. And don't forget to rate and review us! Email us at filmmakingsucks@gmail.com with any questions, comments, or subjects you'd like to hear us discuss. When you're making an independent film, it's like this actor plus this actor equals this funding, this financing. Pull this actor out, this actor is still here but this money's gone. It's this frightening puzzle mosaic that is the world of independent film. - Jill Soloway
In Episode 3 we have a conversation with the passionate, outspoken, and driven Talent Manager, Monica Villarreal to share with you! Monica is an energetic woman on a mission whose desire to make an impact on the entertainment industry started early when she enjoyed watching the TGIF line up, but noticed her Mexican American family wasn't reflected on her TV screen. She started by exploring the world of acting and then made the decision to shift her career to learn the business side, and now her work as a talent manager allows her to marry her love of entertainment with her socially conscious and active voice. In Episode 3, Monica is open and honest with us about her journey thus far. From her days attending NYU's Tisch School of the Arts for acting, to her uncertainty about what would be next, to her big break entering into the world of an agency at WME, to her current Talent Manager position at Authentic Talent & Literary Management, Monica shares how she trusts her instincts, surrounds herself with people she can learn from, and sets goals for herself. Caring, strong, heartfelt and fierce, we learned so much from our conversation with Monica! So much so that someday when we have a budget, there will be t-shirts!
