For his first episode of 2023, Dennis is joined via Zoom by visual artist Warren Wright (AKA Warrencito) whose affectionate, witty and incredibly-detailed Dollmation videos have been delighting fans on YouTube and Instagram since before the pandemic. Warren talks about what went into creating his most popular videos, like Barbra Streisand's “Don't Rain On My Parade,” Barry Manilow's “Copacabana,” Cher's “Dark Lady” and Madonna's MTV Awards performance of “Vogue.” He also talks about the amount of time and effort that goes into creating his videos, how he shoots everything on his iPhone, finding treasures on Ebay, thrift stores and cake decorating shops, why G.I. Joe got smaller and what “flocking” means in doll lingo. Warren also talks about how his late mother's love of musicals inspires his current work and how creating the videos keeps her spirit alive. Other topics include: getting reactions from people who are in the videos he pays tribute to like Julie Brown and Donna McKechnie, his dream of having his videos played in gay bars, creating his own mini-me doll, his dream of laying his hands on a 12” Judy Garland doll and how getting sober a few years back has made his current creative renaissance possible. www.warrencito.com

Will Joshie swipe his dance card to find out he was rated Looks: 3, Hips: 2? Will Dan's knees give out in the middle of the audition? Why is Colorado Senator Michael Bennett such an unentertaining disgrace to the legendary Michael Bennett name? (I mean he didn't even stage a coup de théâtre or at least give us a double pirouette at that Democratic Presidential Primary. What the hell was that? Couldn't even pop the head to call attention to himself. Shande!) Oh yeah...we have topics...um....Topics include the revolutionary nature of A Chorus Line, the goddess Donna McKechnie, Buddhism and it's influence on Musical Theatre, the nature of perfection in art, and how the show has aged over the years. One of my all-time favorite movie musicals is Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe's adaptation of THE LITTLE PRINCE in 1974. It starred such legendary performers as Bob Fosse, Richard Kiley, Gene Wilder, and Donna McKechnie. It may not have done well at the box office or with many critics, but there's a lot to love about this star-studded film. So today's episode is going to be slightly different from most episodes of Why I'll Never Make It. That's because it was born out of a collaboration between myself and another podcast called The Industry, hosted by Dan Delgado. In some ways it's like the movie version of this podcast, focusing on the challenges and failures that go into film production and takes a closer look at some of the lesser known and sometimes forgotten stories of Hollywood. So I reached out to Dan with the idea for an episode about this film adaptation of LITTLE PRINCE, I am so grateful that he ran with this idea. Ultimately, it became a two-part miniseries, covering not only that Lerner and Loewe movie musical but also the recent Netflix movie adaptation and a couple of Broadway productions as well. So today you'll get to hear our examination of The Little Prince movie musical, as I introduce you to Steven Warner and what went wrong with one of my favorite movie musicals of all time. This episode only features about 20 min of my interview with Steven about The Little Prince. Listen and watch our full interview by subscribing to Why I'll Never Make It. Listen to "Two Princes" on The Industry (hosted by Dan Delgado), which goes on to talk about the other Little Prince film from Netflix and two Broadway productions.
Donna McKechnie received the Tony Award for her performance in A Chorus Line. The musical features a book by Thomas Meehan, lyrics by Martin Charin, and music by Charles Strouse. At the closing performance of Annie 1, lyricist Martin Charnin stood onstage and told the audience that the story of Annie was not over and that a sequel to the musical was already in the works. Six years later, hundreds of little girls in their red velvet dresses pilgrimaged to Washington D.C. with their parents to get a first look at what was excepted to be one of the biggest hits on Broadway the following season. Little did they know that Annie 2 would feature very little Annie at all and, instead, would tell the misguided redemption story of the first musical's villain. The entire project was a manifestation of the creative team's own insecurities of now being best-known for writing a fluffy kids musical and not their more-serious previous works... so, they set out to prove to the industry that they could follow it up with something more complex and grown up. The happy endings we see at the end of Annie 1 we find out were short lived. Daddy Warbucks discovers that he can't legally adopt Annie as a single father, so he must find a wife and because of that, Annie's future is uncertain. Grace, who has genuine feelings for the billionaire, must balance her career and personal life as she is passed over for other candidates. And Hannigan must come to terms with her quest for revenge and money as she confronts her own past and humanity. The creative team had hoped that fans of the original musical had grown up with them and would appreciate their cynical take on what happens after "tomorrow". Sadly, "something was missing", and what that was what attracted so many fans to the original piece - the absolute charm of Annie and her orphan friends. Throughout the run in D.C., desperate changes were made to the show to fix that tonal issues, including adding more Annie and additional orphan characters from the original, but a major financial backer decided to leave the show and it's scheduled Broadway run (the marquee was already up!) was cancelled. Annie 2 would then go through a process of rewrites and restructuring at the Goodspeed Opera House that would not only remove Miss Hannigan from the show's title, but from the show completely... eventually evolving into a different sequel titled Annie Warbucks! Original Washington Cast Dorothy Loudon as Miss Hannigan Fiely Matias as The Asp Gerry McIntyre as Punjab Lauren Mitchell as Grace Farrell Harve Presnell as Oliver Warbucks Danielle Findley as Annie Warbucks Beau as Sandy Marian Seldes as Mrs. Christmas Ronny Graham as Lionel McCoy Terrence P. Currier as Drake Raymond Thorne as FDR Ellyn Arons as Eleanor Roosevelt ABOUT ANNIE WARBUCKS Another attempt at as a sequel to the hit Broadway musical Annie, Annie Warbucks begins immediately after Annie ends as Daddy Warbucks learns that he must marry within sixty days or else Annie will be returned to the orphanage. The musical features a book by Thomas Meehan, lyrics by Martin Charin, and music by Charles Strouse. Annie Warbucks was developed in a workshop at the Goodspeed Opera House, directed by Charnin and choreographed by Peter Gennaro and under the direction of Michael P. Price, Executive Director. The musical played several out-of-town tryouts, starting at the Marriott Lincolnshire, Chicago in February through April 1992 and then the Drury Lane in Oak Brook, Illinois, followed by a five city United States tour, including San Diego in October 1992. It was originally planned that Annie Warbucks would open on Broadway, but a "major investor pulled out". Some characters were cut and the budget reduced, leading to delays. The Off-Broadway production opened on August 9, 1993, at the Variety Arts Theatre. The cast included Harve Presnell as Warbucks, Donna McKechnie as Sheila Kelly, and Kathryn Zaremba in the title role. The show broke all off-Broadway box office records for the time, running for 200 performances. The producers considered moving the show from the Variety Arts Theater to Broadway, and they secured $2.5 million from an investor for a move to Broadway, but discovered they couldn't make the move in time to be eligible for Tony Award consideration, which was a big part of the reason for moving in the first place. A provision in the Tony rules required that a show had to transfer to a Tony-eligible theatre within 30 weeks of its original opening in order to qualify for any nominations. The investor pulled out, ending the plans. Original Off-Broadway Cast Kathryn Zaremba as Annie Warbucks Harve Presnell as Daddy Warbucks Donna McKechnie as Mrs. Sheila Kelly Alene Robertson as Commissioner Harriet Doyle Marguerite MacIntyre as Grace Farrell Kip Niven as Drake Raymond Thorne as FDR Cindy Lou as Sandy

Michael James Scott is an actor and singer who originated the role of Genie in the Australian production of Disney's musical Aladdin, which opened in Sydney in August 2016. He received a Helpmann Award in 2017 for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for his work in this production. Michael reprised his role as the Genie on the North American tour, The West End, and most recently, Broadway (where he will return when theaters reopen). He also originated the role of The Minstrel on Broadway in Something Rotten!, as well as Dr. Gostwana in the original Broadway company of The Book of Mormon. Other Broadway credits include Mamma Mia, Tarzan, All Shook Up, The Pirate Queen, Elf, and Hair. Off-Broadway, he co-starred in Here’s to the Public! opposite Donna McKechnie and was also part of the concert cast of Jerry Springer: The Opera at Carnegie Hall. Michael can be seen in the new Showtime TV series Black Monday, and recently released his first studio album, A Fierce Christmas, available now on all music platforms. Michael was born in Baltimore, MD, but moved to Orlando, FL with his family when he was five years old. As a child he “just wanted to sing and dance” no matter where he was - the grocery store, the doctors office, etc, and according to his mom, Michael sang before he spoke. Recognizing his creative energy and talent, one of Michael’s elementary school teachers helped guide him towards the world of auditioning for TV and commercials, and participating in children's singing groups, and he “was hooked”. Michael later earned his BFA from The Conservatory of Theatre Arts program at Webster University in St. Louis, MO; and while in college, he went on to be the standby for Ben Vereen on the international tour of Fosse. While Michael might now be well known for his role as the Genie, in our conversation he admits that the role was never even on his radar. He opens up about the preconceived notions that came along with the role, the pressure - and shares that once the creative team behind Aladdin gave him permission to just be himself, he was able to bring his inner singing and dancing child from youth onto the stage with him. Michael also talks to us about the inspiration behind his brand new debut studio album, A Fierce Christmas, which is out now. Citing the current pandemic, as well as the “racial awakening” in the country, Michael says of his album, “this was my protest… I’m gonna protest with joy.” In this episode, we talk about: The year 2020 being the year of the “pivot” The impact of the theater community on society as a whole Having parents who just said “yes” The inspiration behind and production of his album, A Fierce Christmas His “Ah ha” moment while playing the Genie The advice Ben Vereen once gave him Connect with MJS: Get his album and visit him online: https://www.michaeljamesscott.com/ Twitter: @iammjscott Instagram: @iammjscott Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. This long-lost documentary about the original cast album recording of "Company" is finally available, and not only features a smoldering Stephen Sondheim (that smile!), the oddly alluring Donna McKechnie, Pamela Myers struggling to find the "bubi," Beth Howland perfecting the patter, and Barbara Barrie's sunglasses, but the indomitable Elaine Stritch. Proving that some women do still wear hats with that white "dump hat," she conducts from the chorus, drinks with the men, smiles in the ensemble, and fights to nail "Ladies Who Lunch" all the way till breakfast. We also discuss our own spotty histories with Sondheim, which number we'd like to see performed by drag queens, our feelings on Patti LuPone as Joanne, and the strange batch of Tony nominations this show got. In the words of Susan Browning, it could drive a person crazy.... I love whenever I get a moment to hang out with Tony Award© Nominee, Andrea McArdle, because I know that we will always have laughter over something as ridiculous as a video game and Twizzlers. However, she and Tony Award © Winner, Donna McKechnie team up to bring a night of great singing with the songs of Sondheim and Hamlisch. She sits and chats with me about the show and more. In anticipation of his own upcoming solo concert debut, award-winning musical theatre writer Joel B. New sat down with three respected artists in the cabaret world to ask them about the impetus for getting into cabaret, what they’ve learned, and what inspires them. Nikki MacCallum is an actress, writer, and cabaret artist living in New York City. She’s originally from the Boston area and holds a BM from NYU. As a cabaret artist she’s performed at venues throughout NYC including 54 Below, The Metropolitan Room and Lincoln Center. Last fall, Nikki was a featured artist at Birdland along side Donna McKechnie and Jerry Mitchell. She recently attended the Eugene O’Neill Cabaret Conference directed by John McDaniel where she started developing “Familiar Things,” her most recent cabaret, which earned her second MAC nomination. Melanie Kann earned her BFA in Drama at NYU'S Tisch School of the Arts where she concentrated in Musical Theatre at CAP 21 Conservatory, and also double majored in Broadcast Journalism. When she isn't singing a showtune, odds are she is either out running an inappropriate amount of miles in prep for her next marathon, coaching young runners with Run4Fun youth running club, or slingin' sneakers at Jack Rabbit Sports in Park Slope. Her show “Songs for Square Pegs” just enjoyed its second incarnation at the Metropolitan Room. A jack-of-all trades theatre person, Thomas Honeck built sets for HBO, earned his Equity card playing Harry McAfee in “Bye, Bye Birdie, " designed lights for various theatres throughout the city, taught at the Yale Cabaret Conference, and toured the country with The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Thomas made his cabaret debut in 2004 with “Going On Faith… ” for which he was nominated for a MAC Award. He won two years later for his follow-up show “Dreaming Wide Awake.” Thomas has been an integral part at the Duplex for 19 years and has been the proud Program Director for its Cabaret Theatre since 2006. He has recently collaborated with his creative partner & director, Lisa Moss, on their 3rd show together, “Dancing With Death,” which can be seen at the Duplex on May 27th & July 12th at 7pm. All proceeds go to the ALS Association and JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). For the song portion of the episode, Joel performs "Somebody Else" at Actoria In The Astor Room, a new weekly musical theatre series in Astoria Queens, created by Josh Bardier and David Bryant Johnson. "Joel B. New In Concert" is on Friday, April 24th at 9:30PM at the Duplex Cabaret Theatre in New York. Directed by Justin Daniel. Tickets are $12 in advance ($15 at the door) plus a 2-drink minimum.
