One-Act Play Collections - Book 3, Part 2 Title: One-Act Play Collections - Volume 3 Overview: This collection of ten one-act dramas features plays by Edward Goodman, Alice Gerstenberg, Arnold Bennett, John Galsworthy, Anton Chekhov, Frank Wedekind, Moliere, Theresa Helburn, John Kendrick Bangs, and Harold Brighouse. A one-act play is a play that has only one act and is distinct from plays that occur over several acts. One-act plays may consist of one or more scenes. The 20-40 minute play has emerged as a popular subgenre of the one-act play, especially in writing competitions. One-act plays make up the overwhelming majority of Fringe Festival shows including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The origin of the one-act play may be traced to the very beginning of recorded Western drama: in ancient Greece, Cyclops, a satyr play by Euripides, is an early example. The satyr play was a farcical short work that came after a trilogy of multi-act serious drama plays. A few notable examples of one-act plays emerged before the 19th century including various versions of the Everyman play and works by Moliere and Calderon. One act plays became more common in the 19th century and is now a standard part of repertory theatre and fringe festivals. "Spring Awakenings" bréngt dem Frank Wedekind säi "Frühlingserwachen" aus dem Joer 1891 an eis Zäit - also vun enger Zäit, an där Sexualitéit fir Jugendlecher een Tabu war an eng Zäit, an där am Internet eng ganz Enzyklopädie zum Theema ee Slide mam Fanger ewech ass. Wisou d'Stéck nawell esou aktuell ass, wéi sech den Originaltext mat neie Geschichten, déi a Workshoppen an der Zesummenaarbecht mat Jugendlechen entstane sinn a wisou et befreiend ka sinn, eng Textvirlag ze hunn - dat hunn d'Metteure en scène Anne Simon an de Schrëftsteller Antoine Pohu dem Jeff Schinker wärend sengem Besuch am Kapuzinertheater verroden.

Duncan Sheik & Steven Sater's 2006 rock musical magnum opus is adapted from Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 novel of the same name. The music, however, is adapted from another time. As is most of the slang use. But hey since it's so popular, we might give it a pass. Let's talk about "Spring Awakening"!

The Play Podcast - 055 - Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Professor Karen Leeder The Play Podcast is a podcast dedicated to exploring the greatest new and classic plays. In each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Frank Wedekind's dark, expressionist play Spring Awakening is a cautionary portrait of adolescent angst and rebellion against oppressive social strictures and family pressures. Its frank depiction of sex and violence remains shocking more than 130 years after it was written, and it is the unlikely source of the award-winning modern musical of the same name. I'm delighted to be joined by Professor Karen Leeder to explore the contemporary controversies and enduring relevance of this extraordinary play.
Pandora's Box by Frank Wedekind audiobook. Pandora's Box (1904) (Die Büchse der Pandora) is a play by the German dramatist Frank Wedekind. It forms the second part of his pairing of 'Lulu' plays (the first is Earth Spirit [1895]), both of which depict a society "riven by the demands of lust and greed". G. W. Pabst directed a silent film version (Pandora's Box), which was loosely based on the play, in 1929. Both plays together also formed the basis for the opera Lulu by Alban Berg in 1935 (premiered posthumously in 1937). In the original manuscript, dating from 1894, the 'Lulu' drama was in five acts and subtitled 'A Monster Tragedy'. Wedekind subsequently divided the work into two plays: Earth Spirit (German: Erdgeist, first printed in 1895) and Pandora's Box (German: Die Büchse der Pandora). It is now customary in theatre performances to run the two plays together, in abridged form, under the title Lulu. Wedekind is known to have taken his inspiration from at least two sources: the pantomime Lulu by Félicien Champsaur, which he saw in Paris in the early 1890s, and the sex murders of Jack the Ripper in London in 1888. The premiere of Pandora's Box, a restricted performance due to difficulties with the censor, took place in Nuremberg on 1 February 1904. The 1905 Viennese premiere, again restricted, was instigated by the satirist Karl Kraus. In Vienna Lulu was played by Tilly Newes, later to become Wedekind's wife, with the part of Jack the Ripper played by Wedekind himself.

Is your lederhosen wrinkled or are you just happy to see us? This week, Dan and Joshua offer up a podcast about the legendary rock musical Spring Awakening, surely fulfilling what Frank Wedekind imagined of his legacy. The topics vary as aggressively as the population count of Melchior's friends, touching upon the advent of teenage fandom on Broadway, the smash-hit Ben Franklin in Paris, and whether we learned all the wrong lessons from Spring Awakening. Cast aside that spell of anemia and tune in! Tune in to next week's episode when we discuss Aida; specifically, the Broadway production's performance from March 29th 2000! If you've ever found yourself wondering how in the world the 2011 Lou Reed/Metallica album Lulu came into existence, here's your answer, fish-bulb! This isn't quite a full episode, so we'll call it a mini-sode and it's all about the roots of the aforementioned collaborative endeavor. Included in this discussion (or maybe it's more along the lines of a monologue) is information about the original author of the Lulu plays, Frank Wedekind, as well as Alban Berg, the composer of the operatic adaptation of the Lulu stories. Interspersed within the narrative are excerpts of ensemble readings from Wedekind's “Earth Spirit” and a sample of Berg's Lulu opera, featuring Evelyn Berg. For those who stick it through to the end of the episode, there's a special, once-in-a-lifetime contest featuring a prize for one lucky listener. All this is prologue for our next full-length episode in which we will be joined by the illustrious and insightful Arianne for a thorough discussion of the Lulu album itself! Watch for it! So zumindest Frank Wedekinds Theorie. Remfry and Steve cross-examine one of the most derided collaborations in modern music history, that of Lou Reed and Metallica's conceptual double album based on German playwright Frank Wedekind's two Lulu plays. (Originally released on https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/99-justice-for-dizzie/id1417888519?i=1000479694990 (Riot Act #99) 26th June 2020). The album, released somewhat fittingly on 31st October 2011, seemed somewhat doomed from the start, with most people too busy laughing at 'I Am the Table' memes to pay all that much attention to the album's content or concept. We make the case for the defense of Lulu, as there is plenty of interesting ideas and concepts to delve into if you can put aside the troubling lyrics about 'a colored man's dick' (easier said than done perhaps).

Frank Wedekind The German dramatist, cosmopolite, and libertarian Frank Wedekind (1864-1918) was a foe of middle-class hypocrisy and a moralist eager to reform the world through sexual emancipation. Frank Wedekind was born Benjamin Franklin Wedekind on July 24, 1864, in Hanover, Germany. After working as a freelance journalist, an advertising copywriter, and a secretary for a circus, and spending long sojourns as a painter in England and France, young Wedekind moved to Munich, joining the staff of the satirical magazine Simplizissimus, in which his first political poems appeared. He remained in Munich until his death, occasionally making guest appearances in his own plays, giving public readings, and reciting and singing his ballads in a famous cabaret called Die Elf Scharfrichter (Eleven Executioners). About the Play. In a Prologue, the characters in the drama are introduced by an ‘Animal Tamer’ as if they are creatures in a traveling circus. Lulu herself is described as “the true animal, the wild, beautiful animal” and the “primal form of woman”. When the action of the play starts, Lulu has been rescued by the rich newspaper publisher Dr Schön from a life on the streets with her alleged father, the petty criminal Schigolch. Dr Schön has taken Lulu under his wing, educated her and made her his lover. Wishing however to make a more socially advantageous match for himself, he has married her off to the medic Dr Goll. In the first Act Dr Goll has brought Lulu to have her portrait painted by Schwarz. Left alone with him, Lulu seduces the painter. When Dr Goll returns to confront them, he collapses with a fatal heart attack. In Act Two, Lulu has married the painter Schwarz, who, with Schön’s assistance, has now achieved fame and wealth. She remains Schön’s mistress, however. Wishing to be rid of her ahead of his forthcoming marriage to a society belle, Charlotte von Zarnikow, Schön informs Schwarz about her dissolute past. Schwarz is shocked to the core and “guillotines” himself with his razor. In Act Three Lulu appears as a dancer in a revue, her new career promoted by Schön’s son Alwa, who is now also infatuated with her. Dr Schön is forced to admit that he is in her thrall. Lulu forces him to break off his engagement to Charlotte. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/qplayers/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/qplayers/support

American author Jonathan Franzen's interest in the Austrian satirist and journalist resulted in him publishing The Kraus Project. He joins Philip Dodd, novelist Lawrence Norfolk and literary historian, Heide Kunzelmann for a programme exploring the writing and politics of Karl Kraus (1874–1936) - whose artistic achievements include 700 one man performances of works by Brecht, Goethe, Shakespeare and others - plus performances of Offenbach's operettas, accompanied by piano and singing all the roles himself; whose magazine Die Fackel published Oskar Kokoschka, Adolf Loos, Heinrich Mann, Arnold Schönberg, August Strindberg and Oscar Wilde and whose support for other artists included assisting Frank Wedekind in staging his controversial play Pandora's Box. In 1915 Kraus began writing a satirical play about World War One called The Last Days of Mankind which mixes dialogue drawn from contemporary documents with fantasical expressionist scenes of apocalypse. A dramatisation featuring actors Giles Havergal and Paul Schofield was broadcast by BBC Radio 3. Part of Radio 3's Breaking Free series of programmes exploring music and culture in Vienna. Oh, and speaking of Groffsauce, here he is chatting about totally blanking during “Left Behind.” It's the bomb. Here’s the marvelous Deaf West performing the revival of “Spring Awakening” at the White House with an interesting interview from Duncan Sheik. You get a great glimpse of how they use the blend of hearing and deaf actors. This is a great article from The Guardian which features opinions from five deaf New Yorkers and a hearing ASL interpreter. They give a great insight as to what the experience is like for a deaf audience member. And of course, JIMI'S NEW VIDEO! GO WATCH IT! MY CAPS LOCK IS BROKEN NOW! Steven Sater is an American poet, playwright, lyricist, television writer and screenwriter. Him and Duncan Sheik worked together on Spring Awakening, a musical interpretation of German playwright Frank Wedekind's play of the same name. In 2007, Sater won two Tony Awards for his work on Spring Awakening. He won the Tony for Best Book and Best Musical Score, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics, and the Outer Critic Circle Award for Best Lyrics. The pair received the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album and, in addition, The Dramatists Guild Hull-Warriner Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk, the Lucille Lortel, New York Drama Critics' Circle, the Drama League Award, and the 2008 London Critics' Circle and Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Musical. Just wait until you hear some of the poetic truth bombs he drops about writing for the theater, about Spring and about living life in general. His story could be a musical itself, with the number of dragons he slayed in order to get where he is today. And we talk about everything, including: Publishing his first novel . . . at age five. How he turned an almost fatal accident into an opportunity to master ancient Greek. Why he prefers writing lyrics and book, rather than just the book . . . and why. Why he writes on yellow pads with a pencil rather than on a computer. Where he got the idea for Spring Awakening in the first place and what he thought when the curtain went up on the very first production. An open discussion about the content and subject matter of Tony-Award winning musical, Spring Awakening. Spring Awakening is a Rock Musical adaptation of the controversial 1892 German play by Frank Wedekind. It features music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. Set in late-19th century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of human sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany for a while due to its portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score. Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Tonys for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, while its London production won four Olivier Awards. Panel Guests (subject to change) Pat Addiss, Broadway Producer of the original Broadway production; Dorothy Berloni, Former Head of Programming, Bushnell Center of the Performing Arts, Hartford, CT; Father Jerry Ryle, Director of Campus Ministry; Mary Jo Mason, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, Director of Wellness Facilitator, Jerry Goehring, Executive Director, Edgerton Center
With her Tony-winning costume designs for the hit musical "Wicked" virtually circling the globe, costume designer Susan Hilferty describes the detailed process by which the show's creative team conceived their own vision of Oz, and the level of work required to execute the show's distinctive costumes. She also talks about her initial interest in both fine art and scenic design, even as she worked in costume shops as an artisan; the lucky break that got her professional design credits while still an undergraduate; her decision to go to the Yale School of Drama after several years of working in New York and how that led to her 30-year collaboration with South African playwright Athol Fugard; her quick takes on the varying directorial styles of her most frequent collaborators, including James Lapine, Des McAnuff, Carole Rothman, Robert Woodruff and the late Garland Wright; her counsel to students, as the head of the graduate design program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts; and why she felt she was going to have to protect Frank Wedekind when she began work on the musical "Spring Awakening". Original air date - September 8, 2009.
