Today episode is probably one of the most important shows I have released in some time. On the show is filmmaker Naomi McDougall Jones the writer, actress and producer behind the indie film Bite Me, a subversive romantic comedy about a real-life vampire and the IRS agent who audits them, directed by Meredith Edwards. The filmmakers of Bite Me have decided to take a radical approach to distribute their film: they're doing it themselves. For 3 months, they traveled in an RV around the U.S. and screening the film wherever they can – be it a theater, a bar, or someone's living room. Not only did they tour around the country like carnies they also documented their entire process with a docu-series.EVERY FILMMAKER NEEDS TO WATCH THIS SERIES. It is mandatory for every IFH Tribe member. I've never said this before so take it seriously. It will save you a ton of pain and suffering. Naomi is so open, raw and honest about her experience. Get ready for one heck of an interview. Enjoy!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

The Wrong Kind of Women: Inside Our Revolution to Dismantle the Gods of Hollywood (Beacon, 2020) by Naomi McDougall Jones is a brutally honest look at the systemic exclusion of women in film—an industry with massive cultural influence—and how, in response, women are making space in cinema for their voices to be heard. Generation after generation, women have faced the devastating reality that Hollywood is a system built to keep them out. The films created by that system influence everything from our worldviews to our brain chemistry. When women's voices are excluded from the medium, the impact on society is immense. Actor, screenwriter, and award-winning independent filmmaker Naomi McDougall Jones takes us inside the cutthroat, scandal-laden film industry, where only 5% of top studio films are directed by women and less than 20% of leading characters in mainstream films are female. Jones calls on all of us to act radically to build a different kind of future for cinema—not only for the women being actively hurt inside the industry but for those outside it, whose lives, purchasing decisions, and sense of selves are shaped by the stories told. Informed by the journey of her own career; by interviews with others throughout the film industry; and by cold, hard data, Jones deconstructs the casual, commonplace sexism rampant in Hollywood that has kept women out of key roles for decades. Next, she shows us the growing women-driven revolution in filmmaking—sparked by streaming services, crumbling distribution models, direct-to-audience access via innovative online platforms, and outside advocacy groups—which has enabled women to build careers outside the traditional studio system. Finally, she makes a business case for financing and producing films by female filmmakers. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. I truly believe we are in an apocalyptic culture shift ; truly, an historical, multi-century, multi-millennial shift and in the last gasp of the white-supremacist patriarchal society. We are living through that moment...So, what I focus on these days more than railing against what has been we had to tear the scales from people's eyes: 'Hey, wake up everybody! This is what's been happening and you need to look!' But the moment has shifted now and now we have to build on what's going to happen next. And what is already happening. And that is what I spend my days doing. Naomi McDougall Jones is an award-winning storyteller and thought leader for bringing gender parity to cinema. A long-time advocate for bringing parity to film, both on and off screen, she has spoken at film festivals and conferences around the world and written extensively on this subject.

I have a creative crush on Naomi McDougall Jones. She's just the kind of creative that Brian Breaks Character celebrates; she's an award-winning filmmaker, actress, author, speaker, and diversity in film activist. What we see in movies matters: it affects our hobbies, our career choices, our emotions and even our identities. Right now, we don't see enough women on screen or behind the camera – but waiting for Hollywood to grow a conscience isn't going to fix the problem, says Naomi McDougall Jones. Naomi stops by to tell us all about her time as an indie filmmaker, her journey as an actress, and how her experience catapulted her into speaking out against the misogyny, gender inequality, and sexism in the film industry.    In her viral Ted Talk What It's Like to Be a Woman in Hollywood and follow up book The Wrong Kind of Women: Inside Our Revolution to Dismantle the Gods of Hollywood she outlines a four-point plan for a total representation revolution in Hollywood and shows us how we can be a vital part of the change we want to see.    Plus Naomi gives us a front row seat to how she makes her own projects happen: how to get feedback (that's actually helpful), how to get meaningful meetings with producers, innovating distribution, pitching your project without wasting your time, and how her viral TED talk came to be. Naomi has had quite a journey in the world of film and is here to give us a peek into the difficulties women face in the industry, how to be creative and have your voice heard, adjusting your strategy when approaching systemic issues in the film industry. Tune in to this episode to learn more about the change that needs to happen in film and how our guest is tackling this lack of representation head on!    CLOSER LOOK & TAKEAWAYS How to fundraise for your next film What it looks like to truly speak out on misogyny and gender inequality in the film industry Behind the scenes of Naomi's viral TED talk Naomi's revolution to support women, POC, and underrepresented voices A 4-step revolution to make and distribute films more equitably How to mentally prepare yourself to work inside the “system” (while also dismantling it!)   Watch the uncut behind-the-scenes video of this episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/brianpatacca   CONNECT WITH NAOMI Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/naomimj/  https://www.naomimcdougalljones.com/ https://www.ted.com/speakers/naomi_mcdougall_jones Naomi's Twitter   CONNECT WITH ME Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/briansaysthat/  FREE TRAINING www.MakeAgentsWantYou.com   Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! If you loved this episode, please subscribe and leave an honest review. Hollywood is a multi-billion dollar industry. That wealth, and the power that comes with it, is tied up in a largely stale, pale, and male decision-maker landscape. In this interview with actor, screenwriter, author, activist and 51Fund co-founder Naomi McDougall Jones, we discuss the relationship between off- and on-screen representation, and why now, more than ever, is the time to build a system that makes sure all stories get told -- to equal monetary benefit. ---Twitter: @NaomiMcDougallJWebsite: www.naomimcdougalljones.comBio:Naomi McDougall Jones is a storyteller and changemaker. Naomi's first film didn't give her the validation and acceptance that she sought. Naomi felt crushed. So for her second film, she set out to be accepted by the "System" and chose to play by their rules. Naomi encountered very powerful 'gatekeepers' that feel they define the success and happiness of film makers, such as herself. Once she realized that she had been empowered all along, she took a refreshingly different approach. Naomi recentered with her own value system and courageously decided to distribute her film herself. She rented an RV and embarked on her "Joyful Vampire Tour of America", which provides screenings, Q&A with the film makers and ends with a fun ball. Naomi looks forward to connect with her end consumers and independent cinema owners. She shares these powerful nuggets of life wisdom: - your acceptance, validation and happiness is measured by your values, not those of others - do not chase external recognitions that are, in reality, meaningless - get centered with your values, what is truly important to you and go after it - sometimes you just need to challenge the norm - learn by doing - listen to your gut Naomi McDougall Jones is an award-winning actress, writer, producer, and women in film activist. The film is now available to watch on Seed&Spark, Amazon, GooglePlay, and iTunes. She is currently at work on her third feature screenplay, Hammond Castle, a magical realism film that explores themes of identity, legacy and gender through a modern-day seven-month pregnant woman's unexpected interaction with the brilliant, eccentric and deceased inventor John Hays Hammond, Jr., for which Naomi received the honor of being the first artist-in-residence at Ernest Hemingway's final home in Sun Valley, Idaho. Naomi's first book, The Wrong Kind of Women: Inside Our Revolution to Dismantle the Gods of Hollywood, will be published by Beacon Press on February 4, 2020 and is now available for order on Amazon, Barnes&Noble, IndieBound, and Beacon Press. Especially in Hollywood, but actress and filmmaker Naomi McDougall Jones is proving them wrong. She reveals to Margaret E Ward how she not only crowdfunded but created an an engaged and loyal audience for her very first film. It's a 'how to' that can be translated to any industry. Naomi also shares her New York backstory, auditioning relentlessly for two years, while not letting the rejection get her down. But most importantly, Naomi reveals the mental gearshift that took her from struggling actress to empowered filmmaker and venture capitalist, while blazing a feminist trail through patriarchal Hollywood. It's another translatable 'how to', no matter your industry. And lastly, she tells Margaret about the mental gymnastics that took place in her own mind right before standing on that revered TED stage to tell the world what it's really like to be a woman in Hollywood. "It's dicey trying to take down the industry you're also trying to be a part of," she says. But Naomi rolled that dice, took the risk and here she tells her story of how it's all paying off. Manny and Lindsay take on a subject that many independent filmmakers are unaware of this week, and that is Development Funds. This area of your budget is not always necessary, and it depends on what your film budget is actually going to be.  What are development funds? Where does this money come from? When do you pay it back (if at all)? How does this affect your films budget as a whole? Where do you investors fit into this fund? As part of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Women Filmmakers series, we sat in on the "Working Above the Micro-Budget Level" Workshop with Naomi McDougall Jones and Sarah Wharton where this was discussed. So we got this straight from two sources who have done it themselves, and we are here to share what we learned with you.  Catch us at the Severed VHS Trade and Short Film Night, this Saturday May 27th, where we will be premiering our new short film, Knock Knock, and we will have a table for the day. Grab tickets here: www.shermantheater.com/?e=event&eventId=21952&rDate=5/27/2017 And Sunday May 28th, you can see our new film Theta States at the First Contact Film Festival at 2:40pm, along with a full day of other indie horror and scifi films. Tickets are $10 for the day, and you can get them here: filmfreeway.com/festival/firstcontact/tickets Subscribe to us on iTunes, Stitcher, YouTube, Google Play, or your favorite podcatching app. And don't forget to rate and review us! Email us at filmmakingsucks@gmail.com with any questions, comments, or subjects you'd like to hear us discuss. When you're making an independent film, it's like this actor plus this actor equals this funding, this financing. Pull this actor out, this actor is still here but this money's gone. It's this frightening puzzle mosaic that is the world of independent film. - Jill Soloway
