Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (1997) and its sequel, Abe's Exoddus (1998), are quirky platformers by Oddworld Inhabitants that blend sinister corporate plots with fart jokes. In these 2d fixed / flip-screen platformer games, Abe, a Mudokon with a knack for trouble, stumbles upon his bosses' evil plan to turn his people into snacks and brews (literally). Armed with nothing but his wits and the ability to chat up and command other creatures through "GameSpeak," Abe embarks on a mission to sabotage RuptureFarms and SoulStorm Brewery. Hosted on Acast. You didn't think we would, but we came back! We can't stop! And you can't stop. Let's not stop. Let's just go around and around on this circular ride, talking and listening and grooving... forever... Oh, sorry! We got lost in our thoughts there. But we mean it. Join us on this crazy, nonstop, circular, music ride. Right now! In this episode of Video Game Grooves, special guest Kevin Schulz joins us from Black Screen Records to discuss what brought him into the game music game! And it just so happens, what brought him into the game is our first feature pick! We begin with Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, from Oddworld Inhabitants. The vaguely disturbing and sometimes tribal/percussive sounds of Abe's odyssey set the backdrop for a true rags-to-more-rags hero's journey centered around a meat packing plant. After a thorough exploration of the dark and meaty dystopia, we hit the highway with OutRun from SEGA. The smooth sounds of Hiroshi Kawaguchi evoke a coastal city drive, calming your nerves while the game beats your face into the pavement. We also cover the news and releases that have happened since our last show, helping to keep you in-the-knew for your next record chase! So pay attention! Finally we talk with Kevin about the process that records labels go through to curate their catalog. On the consumer side, what impressions do we get about the "personalities" and identities that record labels project to the market. Plus, somewhere in all of this we make a pact to create an Outrun-covers-only band. Bread. You love it. We love it. Some of us have been baking it. In Episode 41 you'll find out who the master bakers are and who puts the "ass" in "fougasse". If bread isn't your thing, maybe hard sci-fi is? If so, there's a breakdown of The Expanse and why the Netflix show is basically Babylon 5 for the noughties. Oddworld: Soulstorm is a big topic too, on account of our special guest knowing a thing or two about the upcoming game. It's sounding absolutely fascinating, especially for long-time fans of the series. We also talk about launching video games in today's market, which might be of interest, but if it's not don't worry, because pretty soon we also get on to talking about the fake obituary for Sean Connery one of us had to put together, plus whether or not a baby actually knows the difference between Shrek 1 and Shrek 2. And yes okay there's more golf chat in this episode and, spoilers, there's probably going to be some golf chat in the next episode too, but this time it's a three-way battle between Everybody's Golf, Golf Story, and FIFA 17's The Journey mode... it makes sense on the show, trust us. So join the usual group of Kris (@DigitalStrider), Sam (@MrSamTurner), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero), plus ultra lovely special guest Peter Chapman (@ColossalBlue) from Oddworld Inhabitants, for strong tea and light-to-medium geek bants. As always, if you feel like you want to help us out, do leave a review on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you downloaded this episode, as it really is the best way to tell other people about the show. Apart from, you know, telling people about the show. Do that too, if the fancy takes you. For links to topics covered - http://stayingin.podbean.comFind us on Twitter - @StayingInPod
