This is the second of two episodes focusing on Film Phenomenologies, a new collection of essays from Edinburgh University Press edited by Dr Kelli Fuery (Chapman University).Host Dr Pasquale Iannone is joined by Professor Lucy Bolton (Queen Mary University of London) and Dr David Sorfa (University of Edinburgh) to discuss their essays, both of which explore recent star biopics from phenomenological perspectives.Lucy discusses her piece 'The Posthumous Phenomenology of the Star Biopic: Kristen Stewart as Jean Seberg in Seberg (2019)' while David tells Pasquale about his chapter 'The Assassination of Marilyn Monroe by the Coward Andrew Dominik' which takes a Sartrean approach to the controversial 2022 film Blonde. While this episode is stand-alone, the previous episode features editor Kelli in conversation with Pasquale. She unpacks the concept behind the collection, provides an overview of all 13 chapters and takes a closer look at her own essay, 'The Khôra-Screen: Responsibility as a Precarious Intimacy in Agnès Varda's One Sings, the Other Doesn't (1977).
This is the first of two episodes in which host Dr Pasquale Iannone and guests discuss Film Phenomenologies, a ground-breaking collection of essays from Edinburgh University Press which explores work by filmmakers such as Céline Sciamma, Agnès Varda, Bill Viola, Alex Garland and Barry Jenkins through a phenomenological lens.In this first episode, Pasquale is joined by the collection's editor Dr Kelli Fuery (Professor of Creative and Cultural Industries at Chapman University, California). Kelli discusses her interest in feminist film-phenomenology, provides an overview of all 13 chapters and then takes a closer look at her own piece - on Agnès Varda's feminist musical One Sings, The Other Doesn't (1977).The next episode of Edinburgh Film Podcast (EFP 50) includes conversations with Professor Lucy Bolton and Dr David Sorfa, who discuss their respective chapters.

In the penultimate episode of the Agnes Varda series, THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE, Carter and I discuss her 1977 film, ONE SINGS, THE OTHER DOESN'T. In this episode, we talk about abortion, Agnes' personal history with having an illegal abortion and being one of the 343 women who signed The Manifesto of the 343, which would pave the way for the legalization of abortion in France in 1975. Based on Paul's One Sings, The Other Doesn't (1977), Corey also wanted to keep it in Paris. And so... Charade (1963). Famously known as "the best Hitchcock movie Hitchcock never made," Charade was actually directed by another movie god: Stanley Donen. (Look at his filmography and deny it.) Charade is a romantic screwball comedy mystery - about as 1960s as a film can get. Gorgeous locations (Paris), gorgeous costumes (Givenchy), and gorgeous stars (Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Walter Matthau)! Audrey Hepburn plays Reggie Lampert, an unhappy wife who longs for a divorce from her secretive husband. When she finds out he's been murdered, the thrills...I don't know, man. These '60s comedies are so boring... Paul and Corey talk about what works and what doesn't in the film, the incredible careers of all involved, and only barely talk about the CIA! Enjoy, or as the French would say "Enjoy." (This was a French person who knows English.)
Based on Corey's The 15:17 to Paris (2018), Paul wanted to keep it in Paris. And so... One Sings, The Other Doesn't (1977). The film is directed and written by "one of the Gods of cinema" Agnès Varda - preeminent member of the Left Bank/French New Wave film movement. Varda's style wove documentary and narrative storytelling in an intuitive and overtly feminine way. One Sings, The Other Doesn't tells the story of two friends - Pomme/Apple (nee Pauline) and Suzanne - as they make their way into and through adulthood. It spans the course of 14 years of their lives together, following the Women's Liberation movement and the legalization of abortion in France. As Varda put it, "My message sounds better when it's sung," and the film is sort of a dreamy musical, with lyrics also written by Varda. You should absolutely watch this film.

Rolling Stone magazine put out the "Top 200 Singers of All Time" list, and someone isn't happy with her placement! Who could it be?
Director Agnès Varda leads the viewer through over a decade in the lives of two friends, Apple and Suzanne, as they seek fulfillment and freedom, struggling against the demands of conservative French society over their bodies and presumed gender roles. An emphatic and highly pragmatic celebration of liberal attitudes toward sex and abortion rights, the film sets itself the lofty task of trying to set an example for women struggling against similar political and societal restrictions in the twentieth century. *Come support the podcast and get yourself or someone you love a random gift at our merch store. Czech director Juraj Herz takes us on a dreamlike journey into madness of an employee at a Prague crematorium both before and during the German invasion leading to the Second World War. Or is he really trying to account for the madness of collaboration in a nation struggling with its own involvement with the holocaust? Well, we certainly can't say, but this film certainly seems to ask that question. *Come support the podcast and get yourself or someone you love a random gift at our merch store. This week we reviewed the posthumous cover album by the late, great, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave fame entitled "No One Sings Like You Anymore". Released in December 2020 it garnered Chris his first number 1 Billboard Rock single with his Guns N' Roses cover of their song Patience. A fantastic experience to listen to a man with so much talent.
The latest episode in our Criterion series finds Ashley, Matt and Ryan talking about the 1977 classic Agnes Varda film, about two women who form a bond that stretches from youth into adulthood. There's a lot of ground to cover in the rich tapestry woven by Varda, and we dove right in.

This week, we throw on our tap shoes, movement clothing, and break out the vocal exercises to talk musicals! Specifically, we're talking movie musicals that are remakes of movies that weren't musicals to begin with. Will Taylor be able to justify his dislike for Ellen Greene's performance in Little Shop of Horrors? Will Greta go with her head or her heart when it comes to which version of Hairspray she likes better? 60s pastiche, corny costumes, and stories about Taylor's 8th grade school musical and MORE! Join us next time for One Sings, The Other Doesn't (1977) and Vagabond (1985) We're on Instagram and Twitter, too.
This episode we’re discussing the “godmother of the French New Wave” herself, Agnès Varda, and her two films: Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) and One Sings, the Other Doesn't (1977). We discuss Varda's incredible ability to make you empathize with her subjects, her approach to depicting women and their relationships, and unfortunately butcher the pronunciation of a few French names and words... Varda passed away recently in 2019 and we miss her presence dearly, but at least her incredible films will live on forever. SPOILER WARNING for both films.

Chris Cornell’s estate gave fans a special surprise before 2020 came to a close - a posthumous album of covers titled “No One Sings Like You Anymore, Vol. 1” recorded in 2016 with producer Brendan O’Brien. So what does the late Soundgarden / Audioslave singer sound like covering songs initially made famous by John Lennon, Guns N’ Roses, Prince, Janis Joplin, Electric Light Orchestra and more? Find out what Matt and Zach think in Epic Footnote Productions’ “2 Minutes to Review,” a podcast that’s part album review and part competition. In each episode, both hosts are given two minutes each to review a newly released album, a recent reissue, a record they’re revisiting after years of going unlistened, or in this case a collection of new singles. Whoever gives the longest review in under two minutes wins.
