From Startup to Multi-Million Dollar Brand with Matt McLean   What does it take to turn a backyard business into a nationwide brand? How do you scale profitably while staying true to your mission? And what are the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make when growing their companies?   This week on The Profit Answer Man, we dive deep with Matt McLean, founder and CEO of Uncle Matt's Organic, America's top-selling organic orange juice brand. With distribution in 20,000+ stores nationwide, including Walmart, Whole Foods, and Kroger, Matt has mastered the art of scaling a business while staying profitable.   But it wasn't always easy. Matt's journey is one of resilience, adapting to economic downturns, market competition, and supply chain disruptions while keeping his company thriving. If you're an entrepreneur looking for real-world lessons on business growth, financial discipline, and staying ahead in a competitive market, this episode is for you.   In This Episode, You Will Learn: How Matt McLean grew Uncle Matt's Organic from 3 acres to a national brand. The profit-first strategies he uses to maintain financial stability. The #1 mistake most businesses make when trying to scale. Why competition can destroy your margins—and how to fight back. How to stand out in an overcrowded industry and build a loyal customer base.   Key Takeaways:    Why Every Business Needs a “Day One” Mentality. Even after 25 years in business, Matt still thinks of Uncle Matt's Organic as a startup. He believes that success comes from constantly innovating, staying lean, and never becoming complacent—a mindset Amazon's Jeff Bezos also champions.   The Hardest Part About Scaling? Profitability. Most entrepreneurs believe that more revenue = more profit. WRONG!. As Matt explains, when you create a highly profitable niche, competitors swarm in, driving down margins. The Biggest Mistake That Kills Businesses. Matt shares how many businesses fail because they don't plan for market fluctuations. After surviving industry downturns and major economic shifts, his advice is clear: “Always have a financial cushion. If you don't manage your cash flow, you won't survive long enough to see the next big opportunity.   The Secret to Standing Out in an Overcrowded Market. Organic food brands are everywhere. So how did Uncle Matt's Organic dominate? Matt attributes their success to: Brand authenticity- Their commitment to real organic farming builds trust. Consistent quality- Cutting corners kills brands. Consistency wins, and Customer education- They don't just sell juice; they educate consumers on health benefits.   Want to Grow Faster? Master These Profit First Principles. Matt credits financial discipline as the key to staying profitable.   About Matt McLean: Matt McLean is a pioneer in the organic food industry, an entrepreneur, and an advocate for sustainable farming. A 7th-generation Floridian, his citrus-growing heritage inspired him to launch Uncle Matt's Organic in 1999—before the USDA even had an organic certification.   Today, Uncle Matt's Organic is the #1 selling organic orange juice brand in America, with products available in over 20,000 stores nationwide. Matt is passionate about organic farming, sustainability, and helping other entrepreneurs navigate the challenges of growing a business profitably.   Conclusion: Matt McLean's journey is a masterclass in resilience, smart growth, and financial discipline. If you're looking to scale your business without losing sight of your bottom line, his Profit First approach is a game-changer.   Links: Website: Uncle Matt's Organic – Organic Juices and Beverages | Love at First Sip Media Kit: Matt McLean - Kitcaster Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/# Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/unclematts Twitter: www.twitter.com/unclematts   Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@profitanswerman Sign up to be notified when the next cohort of the Profit First Experience Course is available! And that makes A LOT of sense when you realize that my favorite childhood pop growing up was Squirt or Sprite…and that I probably ate my weight in orange and lemon Starburst. Even as an adult kid…my go-to powdered supplements, hydration beverages, or energy drinks usually center around citrus flavors. I'm mentioning all this because you'd think, a citrus lover like me, I would be acutely aware of Matt McLean and his company Uncle Matt's Organic (the largest organic orange juice company in the United States). But with the decadelong massive proliferation of products and brands across the different functional CPG categories that I deeply analyze…it unfortunately creates blind spots (or the inability to dig deeper across the entire CPG business landscape). Though that's the great thing about these conversational content pieces…because I get to find those fascinating individuals that are indirectly related (but pivotal) to my core functional CPG categories. And I think you're going to love hearing Matt's story that spans a quarter-century…from a family farm side hustle to national CPG brand that exits to Dean Foods in 2017 until he buys Uncle Matt's Organic back several years later during the Dean Foods bankruptcy. There are lots of great/bad/ugly moments from the Uncle Matt's Organic journey, but we talk through how everything made the company's strategic approach, mission, and vision stronger…including his passionate commitment to lead from the front and push the citrus industry forward. Whether that's involved with overcoming the extremely impactful citrus greening disease, regenerative and organic farming practices, and philanthropy. We end the conversation with another area that Matt likes to lead from the front…and that's product innovation (even creating performance nutrition products with orange juice as the vessel). But these are just some of the interesting topics we chatted about in this episode... Orange juice from Florida is as ubiquitous as peaches from Georgia and almonds from California. However, it has been a bumpy ride of late. Urbanization, uncooperative weather, and an insect-spread disease in the groves have dropped estimated production at its lowest level since the Great Depression. The McLean family has persevered through this major industry challenge, through their innovative growing approach and finding a niche in the marketplace.Benny McLean in Lake County is joined by numerous generations of family members who help their business in a variety of ways. His son, Matt, launched and runs Uncle Matt's organic juice company, which is sold nationwide through Whole Foods. Launched in 1999, Uncle Matt's is the oldest and largest organic orange juice brand in the nation. Despite their busy schedule, they consistently devote time to enrich others, including bringing many smiles during grove tours with the disabled. “I'm living the dream,” Benny said. “I've got all my grandkids growing up here, working with us, and I'm working with Ben, Matt and my daughter, Martha Sue. … It has been a tremendous blessing to my wife and I.”

It was Ash Wednesday evening and the phone rang. I was walking by just as it rang. And so, I picked it up. And a little voice on the other end of the phone said, "Is that you, Uncle Matt?" I say, "Yeah, this is me." It was my niece, Zoe. She said, "Hi, Uncle Matt, it's Zoe." I said, "Hi, Zoe. How are you?" She said, "I'm good, Uncle Matt." I said, "Zoe, how did you know it was me?" I got seven brothers. I say, "Zoe, how did you know it was me?" She says, "Oh, Uncle Matt, you sound like an American." I said, "Thank you, Zoe." I ask her, "How was your day, Zoe?" She said, "Oh, Uncle Matt, I had a busy day. I went to school, and then I came home, and I did some homework. And then I went to volleyball practice, and then I came home. I did some more homework. We had some dinner. Then I went to church, and I got ashes." "What do you mean you got ashes?" "Yeah, Uncle Matt. Father, he made a big mess on my head with those ashes this year." I said, "Really?" She said, "Yeah." I said, "Well, what did Father talk about?" "What do you mean, Uncle Matt?" "Before communion, Father normally talks a bit." "Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, Uncle Matt, I remember. He talked about giving up stuff for Lent. Guess what I'm going to give up, Uncle Matt?" "No idea, Zoe. What are you going to give up?" "Coca-Cola." I said, "Zoe, you really like Coca-Cola." She says, "Yeah, I know, Uncle Matt, but Father, he was talking about giving up something that's really difficult. So, for me, Coca-Cola." I said, "Well, that's great, Zoe." Two days later, Friday evening, I'm out at the basketball. I'm out at the basketball with my two nieces, Emma and Zoe. Emma's the elder. She's playing in the basketball game. Zoe's the younger. And she's sitting next to me with five or six of her little giggling friends from school. So, I look across halfway through the second half, and Zoe is guzzling down a large bottle of Coca-Cola. She is guzzling down a large bottle of Coke. I don't say anything. I just sort of smile to myself. Turned back to the game. About five minutes later, there's a tug on my shoulder, "Uncle Matt, Uncle Matt, I forgot." I look at her, I say, "You forgot what, Zoe?" "Oh, Uncle Matt, I forgot. I gave up Coca-Cola for Lent, and I just drank a bottle of Coca-Cola." I didn't say anything. I just looked at her and smiled. She said, "It's all over now.
