Chris had to go to space again this week. This time, he takes us to a galaxy kinda far away and sort of a while ago (or maybe now? or in the future?) because our Patron Miles requested Black Moon Rising for his Patron's Choice this year. Miles wrote to us saying, "Since I requested two books in a row that were both deeply political, I figured I'd instead give you guys something lighter: published Star Wars fanfiction. The book I'm referring to is Black Moon Rising by Frankie Rose and Callie Hart...to give you an idea of how egregious it is, it starts with a prologue that feels designed to be turned into a Star Wars text crawl. It then jumps directly to [the protagonist] who[se] name is literally Reyza, having a graphic sex dream involving the main antagonist, Jass Baylar." We hope you enjoy the episode, Miles! Thank you for your support for TBC throughout the vast spacetime continuum. Remember that if you, too, would like to have us read and review a book of your choice on the show, you can gain that power by joining our Patreon at the appropriate tier. Today's episode includes our usual barnyard language plus some sexual content, Star Wars violence, and weaponry. Links & References: Other commentary on this book: Jenny Nicholson: This is DEFINITELY not a published Reylo fanfic novel

On Episode 151 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis continues the celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE! This film is a 1979 American science fiction drama directed by Robert Wise. It is based on and stars the cast of the 1966–1969 television series Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, who serves as producer. In the film, set in the 2270s, a mysterious and powerful alien cloud known as V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of the recently refitted Starship Enterprise to lead it on a mission to determine V'Ger's origins and save the planet. Along with special guest co-host Stan Woo (of Yorktown: A Time to Heal fame), assisting Curtis in this endeavor in an exclusive interview is TODD RAMSAY, the editor of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Ramsay previously worked as assistant or associate film editor on MGM's That's Entertainment! (1974), Paramount Pictures' Lipstick (1976), and The Car (1977, featuring James Brolin, Kim Richards, Kyle Richards, and music by Leonard Rosenman). After Star Trek, he edited such classics as Escape from New York (1981), The Thing (1982), and Black Moon Rising (1986). In this interview, Todd talks about his career in and out of Star Trek. He also debunks several urban legends about the making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It's a wonderful trip down memory lane filled with minutia and obscurity which you'll only hear right here on RetroZest! Incidentally, you may help the RetroZest podcast by purchasing a unique T-Shirt or two (many different designs and colors!) from our store at store.retrozest.com/home. For this episode we take a look at strange John Carpenter written film that stars Tommy Lee Jones and Linda Hamilton. Like three films in one this is both a product of it's time and a stand out oddity.
Black Moon Rising (1986) synopsis: “A thief, Quint, is hired by the Justice Department to steal incriminating tapes from a corrupt corporation. It's a car movie starring a young Tommy Lee Jones as a sex symbol. And it's not Black Moon Rising. We already did that one. No, this movie is MUCH MUCH WEIRDER. The Betsy pretends to be a car movie, but it's possibly got the least car content of any movie we've covered here on Reels and Wheels (and we include Spaceballs in that tally). Joining us for this podcast is Joe Ligo. Joe is a filmmaker working on a documentary about American Motors... and that's how he discovered The Betsy. In a rare moment, AMC allowed the cameras to roll at their headquarters and everyone he interviewed for the documentary talked about it. But... but... this movie. It's all over the place. It's an attempt at a dramatization of Henry Ford's life, with a lot more sordid details added in (and given Henry Ford's life, adding more sordid details is an accomplishment). It's just bizarre. And bad. Find out more about Joe's documentary here: https://www.facebook.com/AmericanMotorsMovie and consider helping out Joe's production at their GoFundMe page here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-last-independent-automaker-a-documentary

In episodes 72-75, love is in the air. Love for Usagi, that is. Our klutzy crybaby has grown up and become the Sailor Moon we all knew she could be. But Chibiusa seems to think otherwise, as the obvious expert in all things silver crystal (insert sarcasm here, Usagi is clearly more than worthy). But Usagi isn't the only one turning over a new leaf, looks like there are some new Black Moon baddies who have decided to show up, along with a new Sailor Scout. The trajectory of Austin-based band Black Pumas has seen a phenomenal rise since the duo formed in 2017. Grammy-winning producer and guitarist Adrian Quesada was introduced to Eric Burton, a powerhouse songwriter and street performer, by a mutual friend. The two musicians connected and the first day they got together in the studio, they recorded what would become the Black Pumas’ first two singles, “Black Moon Rising” and “Fire.” 2019 saw the band selling out tours in the US, EU, and UK and receiving a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The following year, their critically acclaimed self-titled debut for ATO Records was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2021 Grammys, and its lead single “Colors,” which has surpassed 150million streams, was nominated for Record of the Year.

Carpenter Month hits its first true speed bump, which goes by the name of "Black Moon Rising" (1986). Only tangentially related to Carpenter himself (who received a story credit), this awkward heist film has a smattering of clever sequences, but never really coheres into a solid story. With this in mind, listen along as Nick attempts to regale Lewis with anecdotes from his teenage years when he would climb on top of local arcade buildings for the thrill of it. The big finale!
How's this for a change of pace: this week, we're talking about two films that John Carpenter didn't direct! However, both 1978's Eyes of Laura Mars and 1986's Black Moon Rising began their existence as Carpenter screenplays (both, eventually, re-worked by other writers), and we'd be missing out on a lot of Carpenter completionist cred if we didn't check them out! In a discussion that somehow ends up winding its way through early 80s west coast punk rock, the recent Suspiria remake, and the magnificent (and persistent!) uni-brow of Mr. Tommy Lee Jones, Chris and Nick seek out the nuggets of quintessential Carpenter in these two VHS-era movies -- and consider whether they're essential viewing for the filmmaker's fans.
Born September 26, 1956 in Salisbury, Maryland, Linda Hamilton is an actress best known for her portrayal as Sarah Connor in the Terminator movie franchise. When Linda was just five, her father, Carroll Stanford Hamilton, passed away. Her mother later remarried a police chief. Linda is one of four siblings in her family- with one older sister, one young brother and a twin sister named Leslie Hamilton Gearren. After attending high school at Wicomico High School in Salisbury, Linda studied for two years at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, before leaving for New York to attend acting workshops given by Lee Strasberg.Linda had her first acting credit in the indie drama Night-Flowers (1979), but began to make a name for herself on the soap opera Secrets of the Midland Heights (1980-81), playing Lisa Rogers. She would continue to build up her resumé on television with the TV movies Reunion (1980), Country Gold (1982), Wishman (1983), and Secrets of a Mother and Daughter (1983), as well as guest appearances on TV series such as Shirley, King's Crossing and Hill Street Blues. In 1982 she starred opposite Robert Carradine in the action thriller Tag: The Assassination Game, as Susan Swayze. Her first big break came in 1984 when she starred in James Cameron's The Terminator alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Biehn. That same year she also starred in Fritz Kiersh's adaptation of Children of the Corn. The following years would see her split time between TV and Hollywood with TV movies Secret Weapons, Club Med and Go Toward the Light and big screen projects like Black Moon Rising (1986) and King Kong Lives (1986). Linda reached a new career high in 1987 when she was cast in a starring role on the contemporary TV adaptation of Beauty and the Beast. In the crime drama set in Manhattan, Linda starred opposite Ron Perlman's Beast as Assistant District Attorney Catherine Chandler, a role that earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination as well as two Golden Globe nominations.Following Beauty and the Beast's three season run, Linda returned to the big screen in Mr. Destiny (1990) opposite Michael Caine, and a return to Sarah Connor, the role that made her a household name in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). The following years saw her split time again between TV films and Hollywood movies while also expanding her repertoire by lending her voice talents to animated shows.Linda joined the DC Animated Universe by lending her voice talents to the animated series The New Batman Adventures, as well as Batman Beyond and its film Batman Beyond: The Movie (both 1999). Furthering her voice acting career she joined Disney animated series Hercules and Buzz Lightyear of Star Commandas a recurring character. The rest of the 2000s would see Linda take a step back, taking supporting roles in lower profile projects before again returning to TV with the 2009 crime series The Line. On the film side she made an uncredited return to the Terminator franchise by recording new dialogue for McG's Terminator Salvation sequel. Longtime fans finally found a new beloved role for Linda as she starred in a recurring role for the hit series Chuck as the titular character's mother Mary Elizabeth Bartowski.Linda would continue her resurgence, appearing in recurring roles on TV series such as Air Force One Is Down, Defiance, and Lost Girl. Finally, Linda fully embraced a return to the Terminator franchise with a substantial role as Sarah Connor in Tim Miller's Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), which would provide proper closure for the character that has helped define her career.Linda has a son with her first husband, actor Bruce Abbott to whom she was married for seven years (1982 to 1989). She also has a daughter with second husband, director James Cameron, but the marriage ended after only two years, in 1999, although they'd been together for many years before they were married.ABOUT EASY DOES IT, IN THEATERS AND ON DEMAND JULY 17THDirected by Will Addison and featuring: Linda Hamilton (The Terminator), Bryan Batt ("Mad Men"), Dwight Henry (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Ben Matheny (Assassination Nation)Best buds, Jack and Scottie (Ben Matheny and Matthew Martinez) are going nowhere fast in their crumbling, Mississippi hometown. They have big dreams and no prospects. When the friends learn of hidden loot in sunny California, they decide to take their shot at the American Dream. However, when their hometown criminal matriarch "King George'' (Linda Hamilton), hears of the windfall, she sends her personal bounty hunter/daughter, "Blue Eyes" (Susan Gordon) to chase them down. Broke and out of gas, Jack and Scottie attempt to drive off with "borrowed" fuel... and wind up staging an impromptu hold-up. The bungled job saddles them with a whiney, accidental hostage named Collin (comedian Cory Dumesnil) and lands them in the crosshairs of a cocky Texas cop and world-weary sheriff (Bryan Batt and Dwight Henry). With no turning back and two thousand miles to go, they have no choice but to rob their way across the Southwest... with the reluctant assistance of Collin. Now the good times are rolling as the ragtag trio's anti-heroics bring about an unlikely friendship with a blossoming Collin. All the while, Blue Eyes and Johnny Law are closing in. It's gonna be a guns-blazin', car-chasin' race to the finish!Check out the trailer here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVDNuISP_m0&t=
After attending high school at Wicomico High School in Salisbury, Linda studied for two years at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, before leaving for New York to attend acting workshops given by Lee Strasberg. Linda had her first acting credit in the indie drama Night-Flowers (1979), but began to make a name for herself on the soap opera Secrets of the Midland Heights (1980-81), playing Lisa Rogers. In the crime drama set in Manhattan, Linda starred opposite Ron Perlman's Beast as Assistant District Attorney Catherine Chandler, a role that earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination as well as two Golden Globe nominations. Following Beauty and the Beast's three season run, Linda returned to the big screen in Mr. Destiny (1990) opposite Michael Caine, and a return to Sarah Connor, the role that made her a household name in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). The following years saw her split time again between TV films and Hollywood movies while also expanding her repertoire by lending her voice talents to animated shows. Linda joined the DC Animated Universe by lending her voice talents to the animated series The New Batman Adventures, as well as Batman Beyond and its film Batman Beyond: The Movie (both 1999). Longtime fans finally found a new beloved role for Linda as she starred in a recurring role for the hit series Chuck as the titular character's mother Mary Elizabeth Bartowski. Linda would continue her resurgence, appearing in recurring roles on TV series such as Air Force One Is Down, Defiance, and Lost Girl. Finally, Linda fully embraced a return to the Terminator franchise with a substantial role as Sarah Connor in Tim Miller's Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), which would provide proper closure for the character that has helped define her career. Linda has a son with her first husband, actor Bruce Abbott to whom she was married for seven years (1982 to 1989). She also has a daughter with second husband, director James Cameron, but the marriage ended after only two years, in 1999, although they'd been together for many years before they were married. ABOUT EASY DOES IT, IN THEATERS AND ON DEMAND JULY 17TH Directed by Will Addison and featuring: Linda Hamilton (The Terminator), Bryan Batt ("Mad Men"), Dwight Henry (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Ben Matheny (Assassination Nation) Best buds, Jack and Scottie (Ben Matheny and Matthew Martinez) are going nowhere fast in their crumbling, Mississippi hometown. We’re Talking: Crazy cat! Pa TANK in! Unrequited loves… “They didn’t make a Robocop TV show” … “I think they did.” “Are you calling me a liar!?” … “No, you’re deluded.” Transparency isn’t needed during a police investigation. Why a slave culture in an advanced alien culture? Because the robot mine slaves would get filled with gunk. “Black Moon Rising” is the name of the Linda Hamilton movie we mention with Tommy Lee Jones that features The Terminator tunnel and the same Linda Hamilton sex scene from The Terminator. A game of chicken where you might as well kneel before Zod. TNG Q! Consume the last of the designer drug in a movie with designer drugs and there’s no way you’re going to die. This guy’s divorce ain’t real, look at him jacking off! The final nail in the tensor bandage of a sprained ankle. Is this Ray Charles? No, it’s The Commodores… But it isn’t The Commodores, it’s the Neville Brothers… But it isn’t the Neville Brothers, it’s the Four Tops? The boys are dead!
The eponymous debut record from Austin-based Black Pumas has been a KEXP favorite since its summer release. The uniquely raw and soulful delivery of singer Eric Burton paired with producer Adrian Quesada's instrumentals, which nod to 70s soul and 90s hip hop, give them a sound that's simultaneously nostalgic and of the future. DJ Cheryl Waters chats with the duo about how they formed the project, what messages they want to convey through their music, Burton's nomadic past and bringing their distinctive spirit to live shows. Recorded 10/18/2019. 4 songs - Black Moon Rising, Fire, Colors, OCT 33. Support the show.

Did you know that a young, often shirtless Tommy Lee Jones starred in a 1986 heist movie with Linda Hamilton where they had to steal a Knight Rider-esque concept car? Neither did we! Thanks to our friend and guest from Plaid Dad Blog, Christian Lee for turning us on to this obscure movie that's so packed with 1980's tropes you'll automatically grow a mullet while watching it. Once we get past all the bizarre casting choices and plot contrivances, there's a hell of a story to tell about the hero car, the Wingho Concordia II. Listen to this one. It's good.
