I'm not entirely sure what this show is erasing, be it psychics or witches, but I do know they messed up by erasing Kim Cattrell and Art Hindle.
CANADA! DIVORCE! Are there any two sweeter words in the English language? I can think of one: CRONENBERG! On this episode of FURTHER REEDING we're getting personal with the 1979 David Cronenberg-directed horror classic THE BROOD starring Art Hindle, Samantha Eggar and - of course - OLIVER REED! It's a film full of complexity, autobiographical elements, (possible) misogyny and killer mutant kids so you know it's right up our alley. Listen and hear some THOUGHTS! The post Episode 258 – Further Reeding – The Brood (1979) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

Send us a textDavid Cronenberg's cathartic exercise on film, a result of a personal custody battle, is not all body horror. There is genuine child and family trauma at its core. And because of that, The Brood (1979) is not always a pleasant watch. Perhaps Cronenberg's most personal film, it still packs quite a punch some 45 years later.

This week Bryan and Dave take in David Cronenberg's digest of divorce horror, The Brood. Samantha Eggar spawns killer munchkins, Art Hindle isn't very good at anything he does, Oliver Reed is a condescending jerk. It's a movie possessed of a terrible anger and frustration as Cronenberg, emotionally exhausted and unable to process his feelings put it all on the page and the result is the hard divorce horror movie that meant to spit in the face of Kramer vs. Kramer. Not for the faint of heart, The Brood is often like looking into the affairs of a person who chose to confide in you specifically in order to get something heavy off their chest but are you up to the task? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message

It's late one night in America, and two men are chasing tweakers from a local meth den. One escapee, James, gets away. The other, a girl, is set on fire by the men before they drive off. Meanwhile, local police chief Daniel Carter is asleep on the job, again, when he spots James crawling out of the woods, and transports him to the nearest medical facility, Marsh General, where he estranged wife Allison works as a nurse. The hospital is on the verge of closing after a fire took out most of it, and they're working with a skeleton crew: besides Allison, there are two nurses, Kim and Beverly; one doctor, the mysterious Richard Powell; and only two patients, Cliff and pregnant Maggie. It's upon Daniel's arrival that the world tilts on its axis: strange robe-clad figures emerge from the forest, Beverly is caught performing impromptu surgery on Cliff, and Maggie goes into labor. What happens from here defies logic, description and expectation, but as Daniel and Allison determine to face down the wickedness that comes their way, they soon find themselves enmeshed in a plot that goes way beyond medical science, and maybe, beyond the reaches of time and space itself. In this latest episode host Kat Ellinger explores the concept of monstrous motherhood and feminine rage in chthonic form for two incredibly complex subversive films. Previously banned in the UK under the heading of video nasty, Andrzej Żuławski's Possession tackles the subject of gothic hysteria and mad love in his usual beautifully excessive melodramatic mode. When Anna (Isabelle Adjani) tries to leave her husband Mark (Sam Neill) for not one, but two lovers, their marriage becomes an ugly battle ground. Meanwhile David Cronenberg's The Brood looks at internalised rage and trauma birthed into murderous children by a bizarre form of alternative therapy (starring Oliver Reed, Samantha Egger, and Art Hindle).
I don't think you can go wrong with an evil children theme. For this episode we watched two 70s takes with very different approaches: The Brood (1979) and Devil Times Five, aka People Toys, (1974). Spoilers start around xx The Brood (1979) The Brood is a 1979 Canadian psychological horror film directed by David Cronenberg. The film stars Oliver Reed, Samantha Eggar, Art Hindle, and Karen Black, and tells the story of a woman named Nola Carveth (Eggar) who is undergoing psychotherapy for severe postpartum depression. While in therapy, she begins to have strange dreams and hallucinations, and her "children" begin to exhibit violent behavior. As her condition worsens, her "children" begin to attack and kill people. The film explores the themes of motherhood, violence, and the nature of evil. The Brood was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $10 million at the box office. The film was praised for its atmosphere, Cronenberg's direction, and Eggar's performance. The film has since been recognized as a classic of the psychological horror genre. Devil Times Five - aka People Toys, aka The Horrible House on the Hill, aka Tantrums (1974) A group of four sociopathic, homicidal children, accompanied by a mysterious nun are in a car crash and seek refuge with a vacationers at a lakeside chalet, only to systematically murder them. The film was directed by Sean MacGregor and David Sheldon, and stars Sorrell Booke, Gene Evans, Shelley Morrison, and Leif Garrett.
Returning guest Kevin witnesses Art Hindle asexually reproduce in the TV movie/failed pilot for The Clone Master.

It's Christmas at a college somewhere in North America, and the girls of a campus sorority house are welcoming the season with boys and libations. For Clare, Jess, Phyl, Barb and their house mother, Mrs. Mac, it's an especially sweet time, as the house welcomes kids from the neighborhood for a party and the spirit of giving is in the air. But soon, giving turns to screaming as one of them finds herself confronted by a mysterious stranger who has seemingly entered the house via an upstairs window. Soon, the case of one missing girl draws in the residents of the house, the local police, and the town, and an oddly hard-to-locate killer initiates a game of hide-and-seek, sororicide, and some truly awful telephone etiquette. Adam and Zands explore Bob Clark's seminal 70s sorority slasher. Adam's "all-time-scariest-film." They explore the films feminist themes, its unapologetically pro-choice message, its stacked cast (including Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, Andrea Martin and Art Hindle) the way it blends burgeoning slasher horror with psychological drama and surreal sounds/colors to create a fully chilling experience. Hello again film chums. Today we finish off a big batch of rare 70's gems, mostly. Please reach out if you want help acquiring any of them. First off we review the film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's (Happy birthday Wanda June 1971) Rod Steiger and Susan York star in yet another in a very long line of 70's movies based on plays. Also with this one as my English professor used to say “If it gets deep, start swimming.” Next we have (Sandcastles 1972) Which was a made for tv film that sadly sounds a lil more trippy than it is. It is weird though and does have Jan Michael Vincent, and Mariette Hartley from that one episode of Star Trek where Spock gets into primitivism. Travel with us now to (OZ 1976) later called 20th century oz. This is definitely trippy and quite fab n magical in bits. Features the whirlybird pilot in the road warrior. Next up is (A circle of children 1977). Jane Alexander stars as Mary who takes on the treatment of disabled children, bringing us along for the ride. Far from perfect but it does look right at it which was a definite positive step. Willis from different strokes is here, as well as Rachel Robert's as Helga. Movin right along to (Thieves 1977) Marlo Thomas and Charles Gordin, Star in this sadly out of print dark comedy directed by John Berry (Claudine- podcast coming very soon) Would you believe that this film is based off a play. Wow. Finally today we review (Before and after 1979) This is another made for tv film that gets a lot of once taboo stuff out there, so we can talk about it and deal. Here it's weight loss, anorexia, body image, shitty husbands etc. May be the first film to mention anorexia. Omg Betty White plays quite a sadist in this. stars Patty Duke, Barbara Feldon, Art Hindle, and is directed by Star Trek director Kim Friedman. Written by Hindi Brooks. Thanks for listening everyone.
This week, I was so pleased to welcome a new friend to the podcast. An actor and an acting teacher in his native Canada, Robert Bellissimo has appeared in numerous television shows, feature films, commercials, and plays. Two recent credits include PRIVATE EYES starring Jason Priestly and ROBBERY, which starred Art Hindle as well.A passionate cinephile for twenty years, in his late twenties, he realized he wanted to explore storytelling in a more in-depth way. When the Covid-19 lockdown began in March of 2020, he took advantage of his free time and created his high-quality YouTube Channel Robert Bellissimo at the Movies. Reviewing and introducing viewers to some of cinema's greatest films, over the past two years, he's interviewed many industry professionals who work in and around theatre, TV, and/or film, including yours truly who's been honored to appear on the channel twice - the first to discuss Scorsese's GOODFELLAS and more recently, returning to tackle Hitchcock's NOTORIOUS as well.Joining me to discuss the life and career of his favorite filmmaker John Cassavetes, in this in-depth feature-length episode, we focus on the beginning, middle, and end of Cassavetes' oeuvre in the form of SHADOWS, A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE, and LOVE STREAMS. Additionally sprinkling in throughout our conversation some of the director's thoughts on filmmaking, acting, men, women, and life in general, this is an episode that I hope Cassavetes devotees will love.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveLogo: Kate Gabrielle - KateGabrielle.comOriginally Posted on Patreon (8/17/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/70659691

Full episode of my second appearance on https://www.projectionboothpodcast.com/ is now available through WUH. "THE BROOD is the story of the Carveth family and how the sins of the past visit the children of the next generation. Frank (played by Art Hindle) and his wife Nola (played by Samantha Eggar) have separated. She’s under the care of Dr. Hal Raglan (played by Oliver Reed). He’s the head of the Somafree clinic and has mastered the art of psychoplasmics where negative thoughts and feelings are manifested physically. These come in the form of rashes or lesions or, in the case of Nola, a group of odd creatures who go on a murderous rampage when her ire is raised."

The Brood (1979) stars Samantha Eggar and Art Hindle as a couple whose acrimonious divorce is worsened by a group of murderous monster children. What woman hasn't wished for a rage-projection to attack a romantic rival? Chick Flicks is a film review podcast hosted by McKenzie Chapman and Bridget Hovell. This week we're talking about some of the favorite actors of a certain co-host of Werewolf Ambulance: Jeff Goldblum and Donald Sutherland in the 1979 sci-fi/horror film remake "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." Special topics for your consideration include a money-making enterprise to capitalize on our punk rock fame, the new mascot of Werewolf Ambulance (spoilers: it's Art Hindle), Leonard Nimoy's accessory choices, the wisdom to never trust an old guy with weed and Santa: the ultimate snitch. If you can't get enough Goldblum (and who could?), check out Episode 103- "The Fly" and Episode 146- "The Sentinel." Is Donald Sutherland more your jam? Then you may like Episode 47- "Don't Look Now." Have you seen this one? What did you think? Listener favorite Arden returns with more kung fu! He joins Chris and their fellow movie buff Geraldine on a special episode recorded during the summer break. While Paul slumbered in his hyperbaric chamber, the 3 intrepid friends attempted to sit through a Chuck Norris film, The Octagon. Arden gives a shoutout to star & martial artist Ernie Reyes Jr. who joined our chat room in a previous episode. Should we watch The Big Brawl some time? Chris & Geraldine recently went Turkey Shoot to watch Snakes on a Plane. A very bad film featuring Farrah Fawcett and disgustingly old Kirk Douglas as lovers in space? Ew, just ew, Saturn 3. The Octagon also came out the same year as Xanadu. What’s exactly going on in this film? Arden wonders if we’re watching Naked Lunch. Geraldine is pretty sure that Chuck Norris wrote the Wikipedia page for The Octagon. Master of picking up ladies, the character A.J. is played by Canadian actor Art Hindle. Chuck’s fighting style lacks, style. “I hit you. You fall down now.” Chris is missing Jet Li. Oh hey! Look it’s The Master, Lee Van Cleef! And there’s a very brief Ernie Hudson. It’s Seikura, not Shakira, Chris. What a great character actor, Tracey Walter. Seikura’s main bro is like an imperial royal guard from Star Wars. Ninja ranking in the film seems to be based on flair? By this rationale, Liberace is a grand master. It’s like an episode of America’s Funniest Home Videos, all Chuck does is hit people in the privates. Look out! Shakira has Kusarigama! Arden wants to watch Caveman. Chris watched Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films and wants to see Invasion U.S.A.. Arden recommends The Delta Force and Geraldine says listeners should check out Barbarella. It was a lot of fun to get together in the same room, watch the film and record the show. Though, we missed Paul’s trademark hilarity! Be sure to check out one of Arden’s projects, Prairie Noodle Shop. When the restaurant is complete it will be worth the trip to Edmonton. Trust us!
