What are some of the significant contributions that Greece has made to the world of wine? How does the Greek volcanic island of Santorini produce wines of stunning depth and freshness at the same time? How are Greek wines shifting the perspective on what's possible for warm climate wines? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Master of Wine Konstantinos Lazarakis. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of his terrific book, The Wines of Greece. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights What are some of the significant contributions to wine made in Greece? What are some of the unique and complex terroirs found in Greece for wine production? How do Santorini's wines achieve both incredible depth and freshness? What are the hallmark characteristics of Assyrtiko grapes, and how does the wine pair with food? How does the tasting experience of Moschofilero compare with that of Assyrtiko? What should you know about Greece's flagship red grapes, Agiorgitiko and Xinomavro? Which regions are a must-try in your exploration of Greek wines? How was Retsina developed, and why does Konstantinos think it's one of the greatest hopes for the Greek wine industry? How did the Greek financial crisis impact and improve the Greek wine industry? What are some of the opportunities and challenges in the future of Greek wines?   Key Takeaways As Konstantinos observes, Greece was not the first to make wine or even the first to have a God that is dedicated to wine, but we did a lot of things for the first time: the first appellations or regions, sommeliers, wine writers and tastings. For the Greek symposia, the whole format of consuming wine was essential in making sure that symposia were an amazing celebration of the human intellect, and the bringing together of ideas. Konstantinos explains that because Santorini is a volcanic island it has a young soil that's coarse. The vines grow on their own roots, but above ground, it's very windy, extremely hot, so the vines have to kept low on ground to capture a little humidity and be protected from the wind. They trained these vines as baskets by weaving the vine canes over years. Everything that is on the periphery is torn apart by the wind, but then you have only the middle that survives. Every about 30-40 years, the basket gets too bulky, so it's chopped apart and a new cane from the old root system starts a new basket. The root system is four hundred years old. For context, he adds, four centuries ago, Bordeaux was a swamp. Konstantinos says that many people believe that a cool climate wine is superior to a warm climate one. But warm climates can produce amazing wines. Greece has a lot of places that are cold, even more so than the Loire Valley in France. Over the years, the Greeks selected grapes with full flavors at lower levels of alcohol.   About Konstantinos Lazarakis MW Konstantinos Lazarakis MW is the first person in Greece to have passed the notoriously difficult Master of Wine exams. He is the author of Wines of Greece, published by Academie du Vin. As well, he serves as the President of Wines & Spirits Professional Center, General Manager of Aiolos Wines and CEO of Wine Wonders.   Bonus Interview Highlights – Matt Cauz How do I distinguish between sexist, sexy, and sexual writing? What are some strategies you can try to avoid using wine as a coping mechanism? What trends are emerging around generational differences in wine consumption? Why is it important for us to vote with our dollars when it comes to producers accused of misconduct? What memorable moment happened to Konstantinos while delivering a presentation to wine buyers in Russia? How did Dominus wine end up making an in-flight splash for Konstantinos? What sparked Konstantinos' initial passion for Greek wine? Why did Konstantinos want to become a Master of Wine when no others were in Greece? Where can you find Greece on the map and what are the key geographic features? How much wine does Greece produce annually? What unexpected insight did Konstantinos discover while writing his book on Greek wines? What might surprise you about the dynamic nature of Greek wines and winemaking? What does it mean for Greece to have a large number of endemic grape varieties?   Key Takeaways As Konstantinos observes, when you're a fan of Barolo, or since we're talking about wines of Greece in here, Xinomavro, then these wines are not immediately appealing but hugely rewarding once you pay attention to them and calibrate your idea about what wine can be. Looking beyond the instant is rewarding. Konstantinos says that many people, even wine professionals, have widely different expectations of what Greek wine is. Some are surprised that Greece is producing any wine at all and others believe that Greek wine is a commodity produced in bulk. But the Bordeaux region of France produces twice the wine that the entire country of Greece produces. Konstantinos explains that the great thing about Greek wine is that we have no idea what Greek wine is all about. New grape varieties and regions emerge regularly. For example, Malagousia is a grape variety produced by about 200 vineyards. It is extremely forthcoming yet very complex and intense. On the nose, it can range from Muscatine to minty to tropically. On the palate, it's quite round, even creamy, without the need of extended lees contact or oak, but still, it has amazing freshness. One of the most important Greek grape varieties has been around for only 30, 40, years. That's bound to happen again and again. In Italy, almost every area that can make wine does or is verified. They have all their grape varieties identified.   About Konstantinos Lazarakis MW Konstantinos Lazarakis MW is the first person in Greece to have passed the notoriously difficult Master of Wine exams. What inspired me to write Wine Witch on Fire? How did the events of 2012 kick off my no good, terrible, very bad, vintage, personally and professionally? Have there been any lasting effects from these traumatic events? How has the Canadian wine industry evolved over the past 20 years? #Bitcoin In the interview with CJK, we explored the dynamics of Bitcoin's potential exponential price increase due to growing institutional and state involvement. CJK discussed how significant investments by entities like MicroStrategy, led by Michael Saylor, could catalyze a sharp rise in Bitcoin's fiat price. The conversation delved into scenarios where nations might establish Bitcoin Strategic Reserves, potentially signaling a rapid price ascent through increased demand and market liquidity. CJK highlighted that if multiple institutions and nation-states signal accumulation of Bitcoin, it could lead to heightened market volatility, possibly triggering an exponential price surge due to the perception of Bitcoin as both a safe-haven and "speculative" asset. This would be influenced by the market's reaction to such clear signals of confidence in Bitcoin's value. Regarding market sentiment, CJK predicted that an announcement from a major nation-state about creating a Bitcoin reserve could significantly sway global investor behavior, acting as a strong catalyst for Bitcoin's price surge due to increased legitimacy and demand. The interview culminated with a forward-looking question on how Bitcoin-backed bonds might reshape global monetary policies and financial stability. CJK's insights touched on how these bonds could force central banks to adapt their policies, potentially leading to new frameworks to manage or leverage the high yields and stability offered by Bitcoin-backed securities. His primary research interests are lung cancer and novel therapies. He is the Coordinator of the Thoracic Malignancy disease-oriented committee (DOC). “They say it takes two to tango.” Recognizing the value of the mentoring relationship means understanding both sides have their own perspective. Join us in a discussion on the Medicine Mentors with Dr. Konstantinos Arnaoutakis and his mentee, Dr. Arya Mariam Roy, as we dive into the specifics of mentorship from both sides of the coin. Tune in as we chat about how important it is for mentees to initiate mentorship and how a mentor can help their pupils in more than one way, as Dr. Arnaoutakis says, “successful physicians never became successful on their own.” Pearls of Wisdom:   1. A self-made man is a flawed concept based in ignorance. Just so, successful physicians never become successful without a mentor.   2. A mentor wears many hats. They should be invested in your professional as well as your personal development. In such a long-standing relationship, they should invest time into the work you've put in as well as giving honest feedback.  3. The mentee should  take the first step into the mentoring relationship and be able to follow through with expectations of working hard, being trustworthy, and caring.  4. Trustworthiness comes from caring well for your patients, for yourself, and for the community in general. Don't worry about your capability, as long as you're hardworking, honest, and care, capability will come along with that.

Steve is in conversation with quantum computing expert Konstantinos Karagiannis. Konstantinos is the Director of Quantum Computing Services at Protiviti, where he helps companies prepare for quantum opportunities and threats. He talks to Steve about how this nascent technology is already a security concern and what security leaders can do now to prevent problems down the road. He also offers ideas for overcoming the skills shortages that both the security and quantum computing fields face. If you're interested in discovering more about the technological implications of automation, machine learning and quantum computing, download the ISF's Threat Horizon 2025:  Scenarios for an uncertain future report, available to members on ISF Live. Not a member? Get in touch with your regional director today at https://www.securityforum.org/contact/. Research: Threat Horizon 2025:  Scenarios for an uncertain future - full report (ISFLIve) Key Takeaways: 1. It's a big year for compliance. Per NIST, companies are asked to start their plans for migration in 2024. 2. Konstantinos sees a need for quantum programs at the university level. 3. Where quantum is today is just a glimpse of where it's going. Tune in to hear more about: 1. The future is now! (4:38) 2. What can be done at the university level to resource the industry (7:45) 3. Quantum computing speeds as an advantage (12:17) Standout Quotes: 1.  “It'll be time for companies, starting in 2024, to start their plans for migration. In the US, the White House has already telegraphed what's going to be expected of federal agencies. They published the NSM-10 memo, which states that once the finalists are out, you have to have a plan for migration, the timeline for deprecation of ciphers, all these steps are going to kick in.” -Konstantinos Karagiannis 2. “I don't see any university have that set for a quantum program. Like, you can't just go, come out, and like, we know that we can hire you to like, implement algorithms. There's no such thing. And I'd like to see that kind of preparation, so within a few years, we've got a whole crew of folks ready to at least implement algorithms. They might not be able to create a brand new one, but there's only a few dozen of them in the world anyway.” -Konstantinos Karagiannis 3. “Quantum works well on simulations. You could simulate up to like, 50 qubits, let's say, and you can make sure your algorithm works right. And you could torture test it. And then when you're ready to actually run it, that's when you pay for what we call shots, which is just runs on a quantum computer. So yeah, you might work on this, tweak it all month, and then you spend $1,000, let's say, and you do your runs, and you're good. You're done.”  -Konstantinos Karagiannis Mentioned in this episode: Threat Horizon 2025:  Scenarios for an uncertain future – executive summary ISF Analyst Insight Podcast Chicago Quantum Exchange Recent work on Quantum Portfolio Optimization Read the transcript of this episode Subscribe to the ISF Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts Connect with us on LinkedIn and Twitter From the Information Security Forum, the leading authority on cyber, information security, and risk management.

In A Synthesis of Time: Zakat, Islamic Micro-finance and the Question of the Future in 21st-Century Indonesia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020), Konstantinos Retsikas has anthropological investigation into the different forms the economy assumes, and the different purposes it serves, when conceived from the perspective of Islamic micro-finance as a field of everyday practice. The book is based on long-term ethnographic research in Java, Indonesia, with Islamic foundations active in managing zakat and other charitable funds, for purposes of poverty alleviation. Specifically, the book explores the social foundations of contemporary Islamic practices that strive to encompass the economic within an expanded domain of divine worship and elucidates the effects such encompassment has on time, its fissure and synthesis.  In order to elaborate on the question of time, the book looks beyond anthropology and Islamic studies, engaging attentively, critically and productively with the post-structuralist work of G. Deleuze, M. Foucault and J. Derrida, three of the most important figures of the temporal turn in contemporary continental philosophy. Through doing so, the book impressively untangles the complex relationship between Islamic economics, divine worship, and time. Konstantinos Retsikas is Reader in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at SOAS, University of London, UK. His work focuses on temporality and personhood, and he has written extensively on issues of embodiment, place making, violence, and religion. He is also the author of Becoming: An Anthropological Approach to Understandings of the Person in Java (2012). Yadong Li is a PhD student in anthropology at Tulane University. He conducts ethnography among ufologists in China. His research interests lie at the intersection of the anthropology of the paranormal, hope studies, and post-structural philosophy. Welcome to GIVE ME THE FEAR - the Britflicks Podcast, Frightfest 2023 preview series. Hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright, these brief, spoiler free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don't teach at film school. After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience (alive or dead, famous or personal to you) for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits. This episode features PIPER (Anthony Waller), MINORE (Konstantinos Koutsoliotas) & PAREIDOLIA (Aaron Truss)CreditsOutro music is COME ON BABY by Tokyo Dragons (www.instagram.com/slomaxster/)Podcast for www.britflicks.com https://www.britflicks.com/britflicks-podcast/ Written, produced and hosted by Stuart WrightSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/britflicks-com-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
