Science and the Sea podcast

The parrotfish is like a house cleaner who does a great job of keeping things tidy, but sometimes breaks a glass. You want to keep them around, but you just wish they'd be a little less destructive. For the parrotfish, the “houses” are coral reefs. They clean tiny organisms off the coral, keeping the coral healthy. But they also chip off pieces of the coral. If they chip away too much, they can damage the coral.Parrotfish have strong teeth. They grind up the coral they chip off, then poop it out as grains that can wash up on the beach as white sand. The scraping can scar the hard coral—the “skeleton” created by the living organisms inside, known as polyps. In many cases, the coral heals as new polyps move in. But in others, the coral can collapse. And if too many corals are destroyed, an entire reef can suffer.Researchers spent a decade studying the coral-parrotfish relationship in four regions of the Caribbean Sea. They looked at individual corals, complete reefs, and wider areas that encompass many reefs. They also studied the parrotfish populations. They found that more parrotfish generally meant more damage to the corals—but not always. Parrotfish prefer some species of corals over others. So in regions where those species weren't as common—or where there was less variety of coral species—the damage was less severe. The results may help managers control the parrotfish catch—perhaps improving the health of coral reefs across the Caribbean.

My guest today is Dr. Karlisa Callwood. Dr. Callwood is the director of the community conservation education and action program for the Perry Institute for Marine Science, and an expert on the coral reef fisheries of the Bahamas, and has a PhD in Ecosystem Science and Policy from the University of Miami in Florida.Today we talk about about the coral reef systems of the Bahamas, how they function, their overall health, and a couple important species that call the reefs home - spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) and parrot fish.In fact, Dr. Callwood's research and expertise goes well beyond these animals and their ecology, and into the social and cultural impacts of policy and fishing at the reefs. Dr. Callwood tells us how an emerging Parrotfish fishery adds new pressures to the coral ecosystem. And how the spiny lobster fishery, driven partly by few regulations for Bahamian citizens, has evolved to include new forms of fishing that are more productive for the fishers, but also put fishers in conflict with each other. And these new methods have unknown long term ecological impacts, as Dr. Callwood explains. As you'll hear, Dr. Callwood combines ecological knowledge with building trusting relationships with the people on the islands, allowing her to deeply understand the motivations and rationale of the fishers. This understanding allows her to assess and recommend policy responses that strike a balance between reef health and the needs and motivations of the people on the islands. You can find Dr. Callwood on twitter @Sci_in_Color and instagram @science_in_color.It's a fascinating set of topics today - please enjoy!FULL SHOW NOTESSupport the show

Science and the Sea podcast

Parrotfish and surgeonfish are among the many colorful residents of Caribbean coral reefs. They mainly eat algae and a type of bacteria off the reef. But they also nibble on other things, including sponges and the living coral. And one item that may be an important part of their diet is decidedly unappetizing: the poo of other fish.Researchers studied these fish in the waters around an island near Venezuela, in 2019. They followed nine species of parrotfish and three species of surgeonfish. And they paid careful attention to what the fish ate. They found that one food source was the poo from a smaller fish. Known as Brown Chromis, the fish eats organisms known as plankton near the surface. It then poops out small pellets, which drift toward the bottom. The researchers followed the pellets and found that about 85 percent of them were gobbled up on the way down.Parrotfish and surgeonfish consumed almost all of these pellets. There were differences between individual species, but most species ate at least some of the pellets. The scientists grabbed some of the pellets as well. Their analysis showed that the poo was highly nutritious. It contained lots of proteins and carbohydrates, plus important nutrients such as iron and phosphorous. So the fish poo may act as a fish “multi-vitamin.”Coral reefs offer limited nutrients, but this study suggests that fish eating the poo of other fish may be an important way to recycle nutrients on the reefs.

Man O'War and Sea Creature Facts, with Cory McCarthy

What a treat! In this episode, author and recovering bluebottle Cory McCarthy joined us to talk about research holes from his latest novel Man O'War, a coming-of-age YA about a trans swimmer growing up near Sea Planet, a marine life theme park in small-town Ohio. I fully expected us to mostly talk about sea creatures, and then we had a heart-to-heart about the nuances of writing queer YA, parallels between growing up trans and animals in captivity, and who coming out is really for (*cough dinosaurs cough*). But don't worry—there are still sea creature facts! Cory gave us tidbits about the inherent plurality of Portuguese man o' war, upsetting shark sex, and joyful penguin interactions, and more. Bonus game: count the times Cory and I laugh semi-maniacally about queer kidlit writer stuff, or the amount of times I say “that's so real.” Remember, kids: it's not that it gets better; it's that straight people get less important. SHOW NOTES: The New York Times article “Boys Don't Cry' 20 Years Later: For Trans Men, a Divisive Legacy” gives an overview of the many complex responses to this movie. I personally like the piece “Fighting to Thrive: Reflecting on Boys Don't Cry 20 Years Later” by William Horn on Bitch Media, which reminds us that the project of the movie is educating straight, cis people, and was not necessarily made for queer and trans people. Here's a quote from Horn: “Boys Don't Cry is powerful, but it's traumatizing. The movie is intentionally designed that way: It pulls you into Brandon's story so that you feel his fear and his pain. Good movies do that, and Boys Don't Cry remains important viewing for a cis audience. For people like me, it's a fear and pain that we already innately know.” The other trans YA novels I mentioned (published before 2011) were Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger and Luna by Julie Anne Peters. The two documentaries Cory mentioned are Blackfish and My Octopus Teacher. I asked Cory where he got his sea creature facts. He said many of them were from the science tomes of his youth, but he is also a lifelong fan of National Geographic for inspiring random research holes to go topple down into. [pic of preorder perk] From “Jean-Michel Basquiat's Enduring Fame: Why the '80s Art Star Remains Relevant Now” by Tessa Soloman in ARTNews: Jean-Michel Basquiat was a Neo-Expressionist artist who was famous in the 1980s, before dying of a heroin overdose in 1988 at 27 years old. He started as a graffiti artist, spray-painting walls around SoHo and the East Village with his friend Al Diaz, under the pseudonym SAMO, short for “same old shit.” He blew up after displaying work at a “New York/New Wave” show at P.S. 1, when viewers called him the new Rauschenberg.” His iconic works include Dustheads (1982), a seven-foot-tall canvas featuring two vibrantly colored, chaotic figures against a black background, and the sculptural painting Ten Punching Bags, a collaboration with Andy Warhol. The article Leah sent me was also from ARTNews, titled “The FBI Seized 25 Contested Basquiat Paintings from the Orlando Museum of Art.” I can't really summarize it because it seems to deal with issues of authentication and theft specific to the high art world. But I'm glad it lead me to learn a bit about Basquiat! Some of the unique fish caught in these waters are Parrotfish, Rouget, Scorpionfish, Jumbo Squid, John Dory and Grouper. Spheres! Round things! The Moon! Bubbles! Planets! This week's perfectly circular, spherical, round show is all about things of similar shapes. As usual we're answering brilliant questions from children. This week we have Dotty, Ahmed and Evelyn, they would like to know:Why do we only see one side of the moon? Why do planets have cores? Why do parrotfish sleep in bubbles made of snot? To find about the moon I turned to Doug at the Science Museum in London. Find out why we only see one side of the moon, how MUCH of the moon we can see – it isn't half! Plus, find out how big the moon and earth would be if they were scaled down to the size of balls. Discover things about Buzz Aldrin's name and find out where Neil Armstrong's boots that took One Small Step or One Giant Leap onto the moon are now. Our second expert is Brother Guy Consolmagno who is the director of the Vatican Observatory, I met him outside of Rome at the Pope's summer home and he showed me the Pope's collection of meteorites and pieces of the planet Mars! So he's the perfect person to answer Ahmed's question. Last up we have bubbles! Find out why parrotfish make snotty bubbles to sleep in, how they make them and what they're useful for. Plus discover what lovely sand beaches in the Maldives are made of – parrotfish poop!I hope you enjoy the show!I'll be back next week answering more questions from children around the world in another episode of EUTS. Do send in your questions, there's info about how to do that on the show's website, everythingunderthesun.co.uk. These are the teeth that are responsible for all the beautiful white sandy beaches out there. Parrotfish eat coral and grind up the skeleton and excrete sand. How is this possible? A team of scientists subjected parrotfish beaks to a Berkeley X-ray machine known as the Advanced Light Source (ALS). The ALS can image organic crystals at a microscopic level. And the analysis revealed a unique woven structure in the crystals in a parrotfish's mouth that could open new frontiers for materials science, the researchers said. - http://bit.ly/2RGa3xT Peter: More evidence of sunscreen causing damage to coral. - http://bit.ly/2HrsBxl Listener Calls: Greg from Arizona with a question about water changes and his new sump. Dr. Jeanette welcomes Dr. Richard Barager, M.D. to share his new novel The Atheist and the Parrotfish.  Dr. Richard explores the crossroad challenges of religion, medicine and transgender in the world today.  Can a transplant patient take on the energy of the person from which the organs may have come from?  Is medicine just a cut and dry practice of moving body parts and making sure they work and then moving on to the next patient?  What is the spirituality of a soul and how does it show up to challenge us to go deeper into our beliefs of the world around us and how we play a part in the whole existence.  Did medicine miss the boat when not opening a discussion on the inner force we have within our body and how it is the force that is keeping us on this earth?
