On this episode Ariel is joined by Kim Rahir to talk about her amazing journey from being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis to winning a European Masters Weightlifting Championship. KEY TAKEAWAYS One day I started seeing double, which is so scary. My immune system started attacking the muscle that keeps the eye in place. While I was in hospital undergoing lots of tests my legs started to lose sensitivity and in 2 weeks I was paralysed from the hip down. In the moment I was scared, but right now, I'm grateful for what happened because it put everything into perspective, you wouldn't believe how much stuff I don't care about anymore, like being late or your child getting a bad grade, I really know now what's important and what's not.  My doctor said my reflexes in the knee would never come back, but it came back with a vengeance, everything came back. I got so fit that I really didn't have the mindset of a sick person. You could call it denial, but I really just wanted to live my life. I kept training and lifting and did some fun stuff I'd never dared to do before, like mud racing. I was in my 50s and I would never have dared to do these things when I was in my 30s, I was having a hell of a time! My personal trainer suggested I try Olympic weightlifting which I remembered watching on TV as a girl, and I loved it right away because it's a mix of skill and strength and it's explosive. I'm convinced that becoming muscular saved my life and my health helped me to get out of this illness. When I work with clients everything gets better in their life when they get stronger. Science has been catching up really quickly over the last few years, we know now that muscle mass and muscular health is responsible for metabolic health (blood sugar management), functional independence – which helps you to have more fun and a more fulfilling life, and improved mental health.  BEST MOMENTS “Exercise is great for MS because MS comes with a lot of fatigue and exercise makes your body fatigue resistant.”“The common wisdom is that, when you're older, don't do dynamic stuff, don't do explosive movements, go do your yoga class and hold yourself quietly in a corner.”“One of the leading causes of accidental death is tripping and falling. When you're 60-70 and have a fall there's a 50% chance of dying the next year.”“The muscle-mind connection sounds like a woo-woo concept but it's actually science.” ABOUT THE GUEST Kim Rahir is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, PN Level 1 Nutrition Coach, Buff Bones Osteoporosis Exercise Instructor, and RKC Certified (Kettlebell Training) who helps middle aged family women lose belly fat, gain mobility, vitality and longevity - sustainably. https://kimrahir.com/  ABOUT THE HOST Ariel is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, Empath and Psychic who has been involved in holistic healing since 1988. Weight, often an emotionally charged topic, is more than just a number on a scale. In a world consumed by discussions of GLP-1 inhibitor drugs, intermittent fasting, and extreme caloric deficits for rapid weight loss, we risk losing sight of the importance of sustainable lifestyle habits and the underlying reasons for pursuing health. In this episode of Hilary Topper on Air, Hilary speaks with Imei Hsu, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Registered Nurse in the State of Washington, about Health at Every Size (HAES). About the Interview Imei introduces herself and her background as a mental health counselor and registered nurse. She sheds light on the concept of Health at Every Size (HAES), which challenges the traditional weight-focused approach to health and wellness. HAES promotes the idea that individuals of all body sizes deserve respect and care and emphasizes the importance of adopting sustainable lifestyle habits rather than pursuing weight loss for its own sake. Learn the connection between health at every size and chronic illness. Discover why it's important for healthcare professionals and counselors to strike a compassionate balance between promoting body acceptance and addressing the health risks associated with excess weight. About Imei Hsu Imei Hsu (she/her) is a versatile and compassionate counselor, nurse, and master health coach with an exceptional background in treating eating disorders and body image issues. MOMENTS when Death Looms: Heartbreaking Conversations and Finding Strength in the Face of Cancer Our interview today with Casey, an award winning Cancer-fighter and Survivor! Checkout what Casey has to say, My name is Casey Kang Head. I am a 3x survivor of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. I am an Author, personal trainer, Yoga instructor, Yoga for oncology certified, Cancer Exercise Specialist, PN Level 1 Nutritionist, Restorative Yoga, Trauma Trained and lifelong learner. I am dog mom to Lily. A 3x cancer survivor from a rare children's cancer I had at 31 years old. Here is the short story version. At 31 I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (a rare childrens' cancer). 4 months into treatment I had a stroke & seizures went into a medically induced coma for 3 days. I had to relearn how to use the entire left side of my body(yes, walk, talk and function) while still going through treatment. My treatment protocol was 18 months long. During this time I settled affairs. Had hard conversations with friends and family about dying. Sat with them in tears, just holding space. I waited 4 months…..before the letter of compassion that we had to write to the FDA & drug manufacturer was approved, because it was an immunotherapy not yet approved to use or for my cancer. I had 4 rounds and by some miracle worked. .After that I had a stem cell transplant. Yes, I have two different types of DNA now. Yet about 6 months later I relapsed again. Another 4 rounds of immunotherapy and we waited to see if it would come back. This interview is a must-watch for anyone who has experienced struggling with cancer and leukemia or suffering in this long journey! See ya' over there! In this episode, we have a great discussion about the questions we feel help answer so many struggles surrounding food and our relationship with it. Questions like: Why do we eat when we aren't hungry? Why is food more than just fuel? How do you start “relaxing” around food when you're scared of gaining weight? What can you do to start listening to your body better? Can you listen to your body AND make changes to it at the same time? My guest is an incredible woman and coach, Gillian Bennett, who is a PN Level 1 coach as well as IIN Health coach and CrossFit Level 3 trainer. She loves: travel, eating (obviously!), spending time in nature, and is currently living in Barcelona Spain. You can follow her at: @bitesizenutri or visit her website at : http://www.bitesize.es/en And for those of you who speak Spanish, she also offers most of her content in Spanish and has a podcast that is in Spanish as well! The power of doing the work and loving yourself is far more important for weight loss and body change than the foods we put in our mouths, according to Krista Scott-Dixon, Ph.D. If you've experienced trouble losing weight, improving body composition or just generally are interested in discovering tips for boosting your health and happiness, then definitely check out my podcast with Krista.   Krista is the Director of Curriculum at Precision Nutrition, one of the top online nutrition coaching and coach certification programs in the world. She is also the creator of the PN Coaching Program and it's offshoot ProCoach and co-author of the PN Level 1 certification textbook The Essentials of Sport and Exercise Nutrition Certification Manual. In her 20+ year career teaching a coaching, she's helped thousands of students and clients change their lives for the better.   Additionally, Krista is published widely in both academic and popular presses and is a sought-after speaker on the topics of nutrition, emotional well-being and behavioral change. Her latest book, Why Me Want Eat: Fixing Your Food F*ckedupitude, tackles the subject of disordered eating in an informal, simple and humorous way.   Krista's journey into the world of fitness is an unconventional one. A self-proclaimed unathletic person, Krista was often picked last for teams and used to hide out in the locker room to avoid gym class. Then, in college, she had her 'aha' moment when she gained 50 pounds. It was then that she realized she had to do something different and began educating herself about nutrition and weight training.   Prior to joining Precision Nutrition, Krista was a researcher and faculty member at York University in Toronto.   As if that's not enough, Krista is also the creator of the groundbreaking women's weight training website, Stumptuous.com.   This is an incredibly uplifting conversation chalk full of amazing information. We talk about the coaching process, establishing awareness with those looking to create change in their life, the power of action and the importance of loving your body. I guarantee you will come out of this podcast with a new understanding of what it truly takes to accomplish your goals, whether it's weight loss, improved health or something else.   In This Podcast We Also Discuss:   - The best predictor of success in any program [4:28]   - Why compassion is so vitally important for the process of change [6:54]   - 3 simple changes you can make TODAY to lose weight [12:36]   - The main drivers for people to want to lose weight [19:27]   - Why the weight-loss process is more important than the end goal [23:39]   - Tools to measure self-love [26:56]   - The most important question every coach should ask his/her clients [29:57]   - The power of community [39:16]   - Why every gym should consider having a dog [41:27]   - Krista's latest book and how being f*cked up doesn't determine you [45:11]   Follow Krista Scott-Dixon Here: Precision Nutrition Facebook Instagram Twitter Stumptuous.com   Click here to get your copy of Krista's newest book Why Me Want Eat: Fixing Your Food F*ckedupitude.   If you enjoyed this episode, head on over to iTunes and subscribe to The Smart Nutrition Made Simple Podcast if you haven't done so already.   While you're there, leave a rating and review.  It's the best way that we can help more people ultimately make Smart Nutrition SIMPLE!
