Amanda and Steve are enjoying the BEAUTIFUL weather. Their recommendation is to get out and enjoy it while you can - it might be your last opportunity before the weather turns! This week, Amanda and Steve are drinking Hazadelic Juice Grenade from Grist House (via Whole Foods South Hills). Want to know where you should be this weekend? It looks like OTB at the Boat House is your hot spot for food this week. As for where to drink, BOLD suggests anywhere with a patio! This weekend is packed with some fun and exciting things to check out, too. At the top of the list (because Amanda will be there and has helped organize the event) is PodCamp Pittsburgh at Point Park University. Phantom Fright Nights opens this weekend at Kennywood. If you're a Will & Grace fan, 5801 has a watch party for the new season (TONIGHT at 9pm). You can also catch Cocktails and Comedy with a Cause at the Allegheny Inn, Juicy Brews Festival at Dancing Gnome, and free kayaking at the Aspinwall riverfront park for Customer Appreciation Night. As usual, Amanda and Steve wrap up the show with their He Said/She Said segment! This week they're talking about scheduling sex and how to get over a break-up with someone you know is bad for you. This week Marta Napoleone Mazzoni stops in between her worldly travels to join us on the big purple couch! All settled in, she’s ready to talk some tech with Sorg and Chilla, including: Chilla is giving some tips to fix trucks parking in front of the studio street cam. Marta is sharing some info about what she’s up to with HER podcast at the top of the show. Chilla is campaigning hard for that brick wall. He may start a new Patreon level for it. Marta is sharing her Awesome Thing of the Week – a home drive-in option. Chilla is telling us all about the new Intel v2 chip as his Awesome Thing of the Week. Will everything be Quad Core and higher now? Looks like the first Quad Core machines will drop this fall. Good question from our guest Marta – should you wait or not to get that new Quad Core machine? Are you a fan of Dungeons and Dragons? There’s an official digital tool set just for you! Speaking of Dungeons and Dragons character development, we may be spinning a new podcast for the network. Marta must have broken the internets with her awesomeness, as we faced a momentary hiccough mid-show. Harmar Township makes the news with an Offer Up meet-up space. Marta and Chris Whitlatch share a new haunt option in Orlando for this Halloween season. Marta gives a shout out to Enter The Imaginarium and how it compares to escape rooms around the world. Our in-house gamer Rizz shared some news that the Olympics committee is considering gaming. We’re realizing The Wizard may be closer to reality than we realize. How about a group VR game for a zombie escape? Speaking of our soon-to-be robot overlords, there’s a room service robot, guys! Can’t get enough of your iPad as a 2nd display? There’s another option out there for you. Imagine your Mac as a touchscreen. Marta is calling for a Tech School for 30-somethings. We may or may not have just gotten some breaking news on air about this year’s PodCamp Pittsburgh. Chilla is closing out the show with some Samsung updates. WHEN: Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM WHERE: Work Hard Pittsburgh, 744 E Warrington Ave, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15210 Evening with Podcamp is a presentation/discussion session where we invite a panel of guest speakers to share insights and thoughts about a variety of topics. These events are community-based and are meant to facilitate conversation and education. Following the discussion led by our moderator, the floor is opened for questions and comments from the crowd. Politics and social media have run hand in hand over the past decade or so. We saw an uptick in the acceptance of political figureheads communicating with their constituents via Twitter and Facebook during President Obama’s terms in office. With the social media surrounding the most recent presidential campaign, President Trump’s inauguration, and the various social justice campaigns arising as a result of the political landscape we wanted to sit down with a team of community specialists to talk about usage and impact of social media in politics. Panelists for this discussion include: We are super excited to announce that Ashleigh Deemer will be joining us on Wednesday as a panelist! Twitter: @ashleighdeemer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ashleighdeemerforcouncil/ Website: www.ashleighdeemer.com Ashleigh is running for Pittsburgh City Council District 4 to replace outgoing Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak. As a staffer for Rudiak for the last six years, Ashleigh has worked on everything from potholes to vacant properties, as well as the City budget and complex policy issues. She has successfully fought for South Pittsburgh’s fair share of infrastructure improvements, like park makeovers, the reconstruction of Brookline Boulevard, and a soon-to-open Beechview Senior and Community Center. She has also worked on legislation to make government more transparent, support workers in Pittsburgh, lay the groundwork for universal Pre-K in the city, and promote gender equity. Prior to her career as a Council staffer, Ashleigh was a campaign organizer in the non-profit world, working primarily on campaigns for clean air on the local and national levels. A native of the Pittsburgh region, Ashleigh is a 2005 graduate of Chatham University, where she focused on sustainability and environmental policy. She lives with her husband and son in Pittsburgh’s Beechview neighborhood. Brian Crawford will be part of our panel discussion, bringing his perspective and insight to the conversation. Twitter: @RiverTalkPGH Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brian.m.crawford Website: http://www.riversedgepgh.com/ Brian, Pittsburgh’s moral compass, guides folks down the righteous path with commentary on politics and current events through his show River Talk on The River’s Edge. David DeAngelo will also join us as part of the panel. David has been a regular part of the Podcamp community sharing information and discussions at previous Podcamp Pittsburgh events. His presentations offer an outside-the-box commentary regarding political blogging. As part of the panel, David will bring his knowledge, experience, and insight to help foster a great discussion. On August 14th I had the pleasure to speak at the 11th Podcamp Pittsburgh. As you have seen, System Smarts had a long period with no new episodes from March 2016 until August. I call this this my “dark period,” and I was eager to start publishing episodes again. The topic of my talk was fitting for me, restarting your podcast after an absence. This gave me two targets to hit by the same date: preparing a conference talk and actually relaunching System Smarts. Hoo boy! Nothing like accountability. Happily, I accomplished both which allows me to give you a peek behind the scenes of System Smarts and its recent relaunch. This episode is the audio from my talk. I’d like to thank Mike and Missy Sorg and their cadre of helpers for organizing Podcamp Pittsburgh, the longest running podcamp conference. You can catch replays of all the talks at podcamppittsburgh.com, including Melinda Helt and me pinch-hitting for the Blogging 201 session. Podcamp also had a lot of great sponsors including Point Park University who hosted us, BigBig, LibSyn, BluBrry, Pair Networks, Stream Pittsburgh, Work Hard Pittsburgh, Sorgatron Media, Bold Pittsburgh, Lyft, and Commonwealth Printing. It wouldn’t have happened without their support, so thank them if you get a chance.

Today shares his thought on Podcamp Pittsburgh, the death of blab.im, and what geese, Ringo Star, and Michael Phelps can teach podcasters. Comments 888-563-3228 The Messengers Are Coming! If you live within driving distance of Akron, Ohio you might want to make a trip this Saturday the 20th of August as the Film Crew of The Messengers (a documentary about podcasting) will be joining our Northeast Ohio Podcasters Meetup group from 3-4:30. They are going to share their story, some cool footage, and film out meeting as well. For more information go to www.neohiopodcasters.com If you haven't heard the behind the scenes podcast about the making of the movie, check out www.themessengersdoc.com/podcast Here is a recent write up about the podcast and movie (and it's not done yet). Attention Podcasters' Hangout Family... I'd like to take a moment and recognize Dave Jackson from The School of Podcasting for spending what has to be an ENORMOUS amount of time editing and producing a podcast that highlights "behind the scenes" for an upcoming film called The Messengers: A Podcast Documentary. The film is the brainchild of Executive Producer Chris Krimitsos and I also serve as Executive Producer myself. This film has taken us and the crew - Director , D.P. Willie L. Harper, and Lead Film Editor Saulo Zayas - literally into other countries to highlight the stories of how podcasters have used this medium to make a MAJOR impact in their communities and/or through their audience. This episode chronicles the back-story of our experience flying down to Guatemala to support and film mobile podcaster Shawn Smith's Now Is The Time Mission, where the organization serves villages living in extreme poverty through building and installing high efficiency stoves, laying down concrete floors inside homes, donating *tremendous* amounts of clothing, school supplies and other goods as well as lead a daily VBS program for all the kids of the villages they serve in... Shawn has been doing this every single year for over TEN years. At the end of each day, Shawn sits down to interview the volunteers about their experience and as you can imagine, these conversations get raw and emotional. These podcast episodes are then uploaded and shared with loved ones back home. This episode of our podcast for The Messengers: A Podcast Documentary highlights this trip and some our own experiences -- and emotions. I hope you take the time to listen to it and enjoy it, and also enjoy the level of production podcasting PRO Dave Jackson has poured into this. Thanks Dave, you are freaking amazingly talented. Join the email list and get access to behind the scenes footage by going to www.themessengersdoc.com Podcamp Pittsburgh In a slide show of the previous 11 years of Podcamp Pittsburgh, you could see where this event was well attended in the past. This year they had approximately 50 people. NOW HOLD ON, before you judging things just by numbers. For me, my goal is to find individuals who want to launch a podcast. I started off my opening keynote speech asking the intimate crowd how many of them already had podcasts. Very few hands went up. When I asked how many people didn't have a podcast yet, TONS of hands went up. So while this was an intimate group, it was a perfect group for me. So judging things by numbers only goes back to people looking at producers who love to share their huge numbers. They might think, "I wish I had those numbers" but what you don't know is how engaged that audience is. While there is no spam in podcasting, some people may not be that engaged with the host. For example, I get very little interaction from my Weekly Web Tools podcast. I love the show, and I love my listeners, but it's a fact that my School of Podcasting Audience is more engaged than the Weekly Web Tools audience. As always I go to events to network with some folks, Saturday night I got to meet some very cool people. I also got to hang out with some of my awesome Libsyn people (Elsie Escobar from Shepodcasts.com and Krystal O'Connor the mind and voice behind all the libsyn tutorials. Sometimes Different is Better Than Better In talking with someone at Podcamp Pittsburgh, they asked how not to sound monotonous. The person explained how they did a show where they asked the same questions to each guest. Now I could be wrong, but my knee-jerk reaction was to think that this person might be trying to follow in the steps of John Lee Dumas (who wouldn't? He makes millions of dollars with his podcast), but (and I've said this before) you will never out "John Lee Dumas the actual John Lee Dumas." You see, it comes to him naturally. I live in an apartment complex with a few lakes. Because of the lakes and the lovely surroundings, we have hundreds of geese. I see them all the time as I walk around my neighborhood getting some exercise. Last week I saw a goose where it looked like they ran out of black paint when they were painting his head. Typically a goose's head is black, with some white coming up from their neck. This goose looked like his head was white, and someone had sprinkled some black on his head (instead of the other way around). I don't know if the geese do this on purpose, but this goose is also separated from the rest of the geese by about 10 feet. When I ran into tonight, they were all by the lake; he was 30 feet away walking down the sidewalk. Now I see these geese every day. They all look identical. I could see the same goose day after day, and I wouldn't know it because they all look the same. That goose with the different paint job may be thinking to itself, "I wish I had more black on my head. I don't look like the other geese. I'm ugly. I stand out. " My point is because this goose is different and it DOES stand out. Embrace your uniqueness. There may another goose in that flock that can fly better, honk louder, and swim faster and I would never know because it looks like all the other geese. I do not notice them. Sure they may be "better" geese, but I don't remember them. The goose with the different paint job I will remember. I have one more example. Ringo Starr is probably one of the most famous drummers of all time. He has a specific style. These are due to a couple of things. One, he was born left handed but his Grandmother "made him" right handed. He still plays the drums with his primarily with his left hand. Meanwhile he plays drums that are designed for a right handed person. He also plays (as he describes it) with his "shoulders" and this often causes his snare drum to be just a shade late on hitting the beat. Many people say they can tell when he is behind the drums because his "wrong" style of playing delivers a unique style. In Ringo's case, different is better. So you may be thinking, I'm not like the other podcasters. I can't publish a daily show, I don't have a Heil PR40, I can't, I don't, etc. To this I say, It's not the tech. If you have nothing to say but have a great microphone, it won't matter. For the record, when John started HE looked DIFFERENT. Nobody had done a daily show for entrepreneurs. Michael Phelps Competition I didn't watch much of the Rio Olympics, but what I saw was very inspirational. Michael Phelps is the best swimmer of all time. The media was preparing for his final swim meets, and they were talking about who he would be up against. Different athletes were coming from different countries with different ages and speeds. These were Michael's competition. This was when I thought about swimming. It's not like his competition is in his lane blocking him from swimming. They weren't going to be grabbing his arms, or legs. The only person Michael Phelps had to beat was Michael Phelps. Podcasting is very much the same way. You are only as good as you last episode (for the most part), and we shouldn't shouldn't measure ourselves against other podcasters. We never have the full story, of what is going on behind the scenes of someone's podcast success. Obsessing over other podcaster's success takes your focus off your audience. Blab.im is Dead Here are some comments from their farewell letter We took a hackathon project that we built in 3 weeks and grew it from 0 users to → 3.9 million users in less than one year. The average daily user spent over 65 minutes per day on Blab The problem? According to their farewell letter, "Of the 3.9 million total users, only 10% (~400,000) came back on a regular basis." This is really stupid part of this statement is they provided a download link to the audio and video. People then took these files and put them on YouTube, and their Media hosts like Libsyn (use the promo code sopfree to get a free month). They also said, "Because the off-the-cuff, unpredictable nature of live streams make for terrible replays." You mean average untrained people are not masters of improv entertainment? They said, "But the majority of usage came from everyday people “just hanging out”. They weren’t making content; they were making friends." The best ‘content creators’ used it ~once a week, for ~2 hours. The people who were hanging out with friends used it 5–6 hours per day, every day. My team is here for one reason. To build a product that millions of people will use everyday. Another classic line which I respect is "For us; we would rather fail to try to achieve our mission than succeed at someone else’s mission." Here is another example of someone shooting for perfection (a life changing social network like Facebook), they missed the mark, and ended up on pretty good. Well, that wasn't their goal. To that, I can say I understand, but people hanging out and making friends will be much harder to monetize. Dave has been hearing about all the great things you can do with targeting on Facebook to really get to your target audience. No matter what service you use, be careful and have a specific action you want people to take (as it can get expensive pretty quick). Jim's business uses Google Ad Words. 17:15 Crowdfire Targeted Twitter Tool Mike explains a tool to follow people who are potentially like you and then later you can do some automatic follows. Its more of a target follow than a blanket follow. Incredibly complex Wordpress installs. A solution might be to install Wordpress in a subdomain and keep it super simple (and embed the podcast on the main site). Jim used this strategy on the Average Guy website. Mike has done this with a few people. Nobody cares that its coming from a secondary site. When someone pushes play, the average listener doesn't look at the address to see where the files are located. 53:00 Plugins that Cause Problems Wishlist member causes issues that can be fixed. Today I share a story about getting outside of your comfort zone, and we talk with the Real Brian about how his podcast has lead to him getting paid to host two more. Donnie Pushed Publish On His Podcast. I got this email in my inbox: Hello Sir, I am writing this to simply introduce myself and say a big Thank You! Not long ago I was inspired to begin a daunting task of creating a podcast. I have listened to numerous ones over a varied topic span ever since the beginnings of the podcast. So I decided to bite the bullet and give this a go. With thoughts of what fun this could be and eager to learn some new skills I ventured forth into the "glamorous" world of podcasting. Your show has been a go-to for every topic I can imagine. I glean over past episodes for the struggles I am currently facing and words of encouragement along the way. Simply put, it has been indispensable in this process. With that said, I do need to mention that I already belong to JLD's Podcaster's Paradise and the information there has been helpful also, albeit a little pie in the sky- esque. I am a loyal listener now of your show along with the Podcasters Studio and Roundtable. This week I listened to the Glen the Geek almost everyday on the long drives between day job customers. All I can say is WOW. That episode really hit home. The show I have created focuses on the Craft Beer community. I am based out of Knoxville, TN so my main goal was to break into the local scene. I am around 5 episodes deep in the editing process and have just released my first show to my website and submitted to ITunes this week. I have broken the procrastination mold of not releasing due to trying to 'make it perfect'. I realize we all have to start somewhere and I have finally made that big step. Now to grow and promote, along with get much better every time I am behind the mic. -Donnie InebriatedWisdom.com My Reply Donnie, Awesome. You have done what so many people have failed to do, you hit publish. No matter what people say from this point forward, you put it out there, for better or for worse, you hit publish. I'm so glad I inspired you because this email may have just inspired me for my next episode. Do you mind if I read you e-mail on the show? Some steps you can take are to go find your beer peeps. See if there are local brewers (guessing here, not my niche), etc. Be sure to make friends before you start pimping your show (or they won't care). Congrats, and do everyone a favor and put a link to your in your signature. Dave Keeping My Integrity at Podcamp Pittsburgh. So I attended a session on basic audio editing. I could see that the audience at this event were brand new to Podcasting. At the end of day one, I asked if there were any open slots (as they just filled one) and they stated they didn't At dinner that night with Krystal, Nick, and Kim, they said I should do a session. It turns out at Podcamps, anyone can speak anywhere. I resisted. As the former director of podcasting for the new media expo, I know what goes into planning and running a show. I just pictured some guy coming up and saying I'm speaking tomorrow at 11 and my brain exploding. Chris Brogan (one the creators of PodCamps) and I asked him if adding sessions was allowed, and sure enough it was. In fact, it was encouraged. But still I resisted. There I was standing on the edge of my comfort zone. I mean that seems like such an ego move. "Hey, I'm here and I'm going to speak!." This is the wrong attitude. It's valid, based on my experience, but I needed to be open for new information. I had just seen with my own eyes how this group desperately needed a podcasting 101 type of talk. Nick continued to nudge, and I thought of my email to Donnie. This meant believing in myself (I've been doing this 10 years, and as a computer instructor I have to be light on my feet and go with the flow on a regular basis), and of course... Nobody was going to punch me in the face.  (thank you Ryan K Parker of foodcraftsmen.com ) So I did it I had a group of 7ish, and Krstal from Libsyn parascoped it to another 50ish. I had 9 words on a piece of paper and just used my knowledge. Was I nervous? Sure. I did zero rehearsal. At the end of day two I was thanked by the founders for doing that session. International Podcast Day is September 30th International Podcast Day is coming September 30 and you can help celebrate the day-long event by purchasing the first ever #PodcastDay shirt. And because the celebration happens every year on September 30th, your shirt will be good for years to come. Go to: http://internationalpodcastday.com/shirt and start the conversation. Question from Ahmad I'm struggling to get rid of "hiss". Here is my setup: - Audio-Technica AT2005USB mic or Rode Procaster dynamic mic into the Mackie Onyx Blackjack audio interface connected to MacBook Pro via USB. I record in Adobe Audition. I start with the gain at "0" then go up tell I start hearing hiss then I go down a little. When I raise the gain, it introduces hiss, so I keep it down. But when I record and try to add just a little normalisation or compression, just a little, I start hearing a background hiss. If I keep it without post processing, the sound is too low. The hiss is definitely NOT from the room, I'm in a very quiet room. How can I fix this? Thank you very much. A: What you describe sounds like a ground loop hum or a noisy preamp for the mic. I’m not familiar with with the Mackie interface you are using but for the most part, Mackie makes a very good (and Quiet) preamp. One thing you could try is isolating the ground to the power supply to the interface (if it has one). In the US, and I’m not sure where Ahmad is, we have 2 prong AC plugs and 3 Prong AC power plugs. In the hardware store, there are these little adaptors that you can plug a 3 prong plug into and it allows you to plug it into a 2 prong outlet. This will remove the ground from a 3 prong cord. Maybe you could send in an audio clip so I can hear what you are talking about. In the mean time, you can use Noise Removal tool in Audition. You leave some quiet space in your recording and in the tool you highlight the noise and click on “Capture noise Point”. Then select the whole recording and apply the “Noise Reduction Process. You may have to experiment with the settings a few times to get it just right. ------------------ Paul Colligan came up with a perfect statement about Apple iTunes N&N. "Starting A Podcast To Hit iTunes “New And Notable” Is Like Launching A Business To Get Into The Phone Book" I’m going to give Paul a SMALL amount of crap for getting the name wrong. it’s new and NOTEWORTHY. Amanda Narcisi makes me believe that I can do anything. I can absolutely relate to her busy schedule and always wanting to do more. She created the online magazine BOLD Pittsburgh and is a major organizer for Podcamp Pittsburgh and is a designer and artist herself.  Recently, she covered the NKOTB, TLC, and Nelly concert that rolled into town as well at the Jenny Lewis concert—getting some really rad snaps of the latter in her dreamy jumpsuit. She's got a lot going on and I look forward to following her around town and maybe even working with her in future. I learned a a lot from Amanda and hope y'all do as well!
