Meet my friend Jason Naylor, a celebrated and creative artist, designer, and author who lives his life in Brooklyn through the beautiful lens of his electric color palette. His style and humble demeanor are contagious and uplifting with the messages he conveys of love and positivity. After earning a BFA in graphic design from Brigham Young University, he moved to NYC to immerse himself into the life, color, and magic of New York. Beginning his professional career working in the Creative Department of M·A·C Cosmetics is where he learned about the business of art and design, and developed his taste for spreading life and color into any and every project he could get his hands on. Six years later, Jason set out to start spreading his own message into the world. Jason's work has received global recognition, including the Golden Novum Design Award and two CLIO Bronze medals. It has been featured in numerous publications and blogs, and he has been featured on HGTV and the Discovery Channel. In 2018, Jason was named by BUMBLE as one of the 100 Most Inspiring New Yorkers, and his upbeat, colorful creations have found partnership with a range of brands such as Coach, Pepsi, Guess, XBOX and Maybelline. Undeniably, Jason has the innate ability to create beautiful street art on different walls in New York City that uplift and illuminate the trajectory of the community that occupies that space. Watching Jason in action at the South Street Seaport for his "You Are Not Alone" mural, I was smitten with the vibe and passion of his work and the community that came to support the project! Thank you Jason for being on the episode! Absolutely loved chatting with you! Thank you for sharing your heart and hope for beautiful lights of positivity and kindness! The world surely needs your large specs of beautiful color to unite the many voices and communities that are not represented! You may be one type of person. You may be the type of person who, you are currently working in a job and you have that side hustle that you really enjoy, but it just kind of supplements whatever you do for a living right now, and you’re happy where you are. Or, you might be the person who is currently working a job and you have that side hustle, but you have a bigger dream, and you are pushing towards that bigger dream, and you just want that bigger dream to come true, and you are just paralyze. Maybe it’s by fear, or by second guessing your talents or yourself, and you’re just not quite there yet. You’re not quite at the point where you feel like you can take that leap, to pursue that dream full time. At what point do you think you’ll be ready? At what point do you feel like, ‘yes, this is the time, this is the day that I’m going to take my dream full-time, I’m going to turn my side hustle, into my main hustle,’? My guest this week is Kelly Parker Smith. She is the Founder of Hello World Paper Company. She is a rubber stamp designer, and manufacturer, who lives just outside of St. Louis in Belleville, Illinois with her husband, three boys, and rescue kitten Katniss. She has grown her shop, Hello World Paper Company, with the idea that great products become even better when paired with top notch customer service, a little surprise and delight, and of course the perfect packaging. But here’s why I loved Kelly’s story so much: she had a dream, and she set out with a goal to build a school with Pencils of Promise, a school through her business. Today we’re going to dive into her business, and her purpose behind her business, which is building this school and providing education for other kids. ON GIVING BACK FROM THE BEGINNING From Kelly’s own wedding gifts, to her very first client’s charity of choice, giving back has been a foundation of Kelly’s business from the very beginning. However, it was her career as a teacher that truly sparked her love for providing education to all children. Hello Paper Company has pledged to build a school with Pencils of Promise, donating a percentage of profits every month. ON BECOMING AN ENTREPRENEUR FULL TIME Kelly talks the difficulties of balancing a full time career, while having such a passion for her side hustle. Taking a leap of faith in making her business full-time allowed her to make more time for her family, while also making an impact. However, becoming an entrepreneur did not come without sacrifice, hard work, and a lot of faith in the vision for her company. ON CREATING QUALITY OF LIFE Sometimes it’s worth sacrificing a higher paying salary to have better quality of life. Kelly talks the importance of examining your happiness and well-being to decide if your career path is truly benefitting you. Investing in others to bring onto your team, others who may do certain tasks better than yourself, not only frees up space in your day, but also in your mind. ON BUILDING A SCHOOL WITH PENCILS OF PROMISE Pencils of Promise is an organization that builds, and staffs schools, in third world countries. Hello World Paper Company has pledged to raise $35,000 to build and staff a full school. Kelly talks about her passion for Pencils of Promise and how children in these countries are craving the education that we often take for granted. On this episode of Positively Creative, I talk with Katie Salmon of Katie Does Marketing about how to create a promotional calendar, why it's important to your business and how to know what and when to post. Katie also shares her thoughts on Instagram, email marketing and how to engage without feeling like you are constantly self-promoting. Be sure to grab Katie's free guide in the links below! About Katie: Hi, I’m Katie! I help shop owners and makers sell their products. When I was a pre-teen I decided to be a fashion designer. I bought a sketchbook, learned to sew, and spent my babysitting money on a “Teen Vogue” subscription. I was sure I was just a few years shy of my “Project Runway” debut.…But it only took me a few weeks as a fashion merchandising student at the University of Georgia to conclude that I would, in fact, be a horrible fashion designer. (Turns out loving soft, pretty things doesn’t mean you’d be great at creating them.) The creativity I lacked to design a dress, though, found full expression in Marketing 101 and I fell in love with the strategies that help creative people like you sell their “stuff.” Because business isn’t exactly an “If you build it, they will come” scenario, right? Your target customers are ready for your unique brand to meet their needs. But it’s not always easy to let them know you exist. I started Katie Does Marketing to help shop owners and makers develop a marketing plan that gets their product in front of the right people at the right time to make a sale. So whether your brand has been around for decades or you don’t even know where to start, I’m eager to help you take the next strategic step. Let’s get started! On today’s episode of Positively Creative, I chat with Emily Kerr-Finell about the mission of Wholesale In A Box and we really dig deep into wholesale: how to know if you are ready for wholesale, how to get started, and how to find retailers. This is such a candid conversation about wholesale, tradeshows, and how to pitch to retailers, that you won’t want to miss! About Emily: Wholesale In a Box was started by Etan and Emily, a husband-and-wife team. We're traveling homebodies with a love for station wagons, the Catskills, cooking, and brainstorming on our porch. Between the two of us, we have worked in high-powered management consulting, managed ops at startups, and helped artisans of every size create a business they love. But in 2015, we kept noticing makers who struggled to grow wholesale, sometimes closing their businesses when they failed. So we started tinkering with solutions -- at the time, nothing like Wholesale In a Box existed. Once we struck on the method, we started super-small, working with just 4 makers from our kitchen table. As we watched them thrive, we knew it was time to develop the software and training materials, and take the company full-time and nationwide. Today, Wholesale In a Box has worked with more than 400 makers, artists and designers around the world. We’ve helped makers quit their day jobs, triple revenue, and stay small when it was right. But everything we do today is as passionate and personal as it was from Day One. And we still work from our kitchen table most of the time. On this episode of Positively Creative, Evelyn Henson shares about developing products & figuring out how to ship them. Evelyn also talks about the pros of dropshipping products, how she leverages her shopify store, and the trial and error of being a business owner and how she uses her mistakes to grow! About Evelyn: Brushed with a love for all things creative, I grew up in Columbus, GA. After my 3rd grade teacher pulled me aside for writing "too small" (I had just made tiny handwriting the classroom trend), I probably should have known I would be an artist of some sort, but it took me about a decade after that day to finally pick up the paintbrush. I first discovered my love for painting when I attempted a floral still life as a Mother's Day gift in 2012 after two friends kindly gave me an old box of paints they didn't want. I honestly haven't been able to put down the paint brush since---there's something about art that brings out my happiest, brightest self. I started selling my work in May 2013 following my college graduation. At the time, I didn't know what I was going to do with my life, so let's just say I'm very thankful that my art business turned out to be more successful than my post-grad job hunt. It started with just a few art prints on Etsy, and has slowly evolved into a colorful & happy brand that has been seen in Glamour, Domino, Redbook, People, and more. I'm currently based in Charlotte, NC. Led by the mantra "painting is a celebration of life" I seek to create stylish art that's uplifting & bright. My happy palette finds inspiration in the colors and patterns within everyday life. Picasso said that "inspiration exists, but it has to find you working," &, thanks to countless hours spent with a paintbrush in hand, art's taught me to recognize appreciate the little things. Through this colorfully inspired lens, I hope to create pieces that brighten your day and bring sunshine to your home. On this episode of Positively Creative, Maggie Covert LeBlanc of Walking Man Studios talks with us about being an artist in New Orleans, keeping her business going while experiencing a family tragedy and how her art helped her heal after the loss of her niece. We also chat about her custom work and her adorable dog series! About Maggie: Maggie Covert received her Bachelor’s degree from Maryland Institute College of Art in Interdisciplinary Sculpture with a Concentration in Book Arts. She was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her home has made a huge impact on her art, as the culture, vitality, and architecture are hard to escape. Since Hurricane Katrina, Maggie has been exploring the ideas of losing the contributing factors that make a place home. She has been drawn to the repetitive nature of disastrous events along with the governmental, social, and geographic reactions to these. Her most recent work channels the whimsical nature of New Orleans’ architecture and characters. She continues to be drawn to details in the buildings and landscape of her hometown. Seeing the beauty and tireless work in each structure, She creates a connection to each establishment through the recreation of these in architectural drawings and paintings. Maggie currently works with multiple local realtors and real estate companies providing personalized illustrations and paintings for them to gift to sellers or buyers at closing. Creating connections with others who love architecture and real estate is continually inspirational to Maggie’s craft and business growth. With her studio on Magazine Street in New Orleans, Maggie continues to work on Custom Home Portraits - for locals and many from other states such as Maryland, New York, Oregon and even receiving requests from the UK. Gaining experience with multiple commercial property drawings as well as album art and wedding invitations, she has branched out to stationary work allowing her to create custom notecards, postcards and custom wedding invitations. In addition to the architectural work, Maggie has begun a series of "Walking Illustrations". Each walking piece is meant to provoke a feeling of movement (physical, emotional, spiritual, mental)- growth in one's life and development. With these illustrations, Maggie hopes to portray a joy that much art, culture and people are missing in modern times. Focusing in on joy with a little whimsy and maybe even some historical or spiritual undertones, Maggie aims to show that "everyone walks the same path." On today’s episode of Positively Creative, Taylor Lee walks us through her struggle with an eating disorder, her experience with art therapy, and finding community and her voice through art. We also talk about how to learn from others without copying and how developing your style is an ongoing process. About Taylor: Taylor is a self-taught artist who inherited her love for painting from her grandmother. She was born in North Carolina, but is currently on a road trip across the United States with her husband and their pug, Frida. Her second love is writing and she is currently working on a book to release in 2018. She struggled with an eating disorder for over ten years, and surviving it has made her strong in ways that she never imagined were possible. Body positivity is a major theme in most of her work, especially her portraiture and floral pieces. Her paintings evoke emotions that we feel every day and each piece has a story and is created specifically to awaken the soul within. Today's Positively Creative podcast episode, Dorothy chats with Katherine Corden on how she grew her painting hobby into a side hustle while being a full time physical therapist, how she has learned to say yes and no to live the life that she wants, and how she batches her work to prioritize her time. "Saying yes to something means saying no to something else, and it goes vice versa, so saying no to something means that you're making room to say yes for something else. So unless something is exactly what I need, have time for, or want in the present moment, I've said no to it." -Katherine Corden To see Katherine's Work: http://katherinecorden.com/ For more Positively Creative: www.positivelycreative.net On Today's Show: (7:00) how she started just a year ago (11:00) lack of art business education in the university setting (12:00) Skillshare (19:00) her sketching and painting process (19:00) Golden Paints and how she has a limited palette (21:30) her commission process (22:00) Honeybook (29:00) Jenna Kutcher's Goal Digger Podcast (30:00) Present Over Perfect, Big Magic, Essentialism (33:00) prioritizing saying yes and no (38:00) Katherine's typical day - batching her work (42:00) Randolph Street Market (43:00) Raw Art Show & Conception (48:00) overcoming hurdles while painting at night after her full time job (52:00) J. Erin shares all about her shop Amelia and the recent shop move from Oxford to Water Valley, Mississippi, where the shop has grown to house a gallery as well as classes and workshops. Erin discusses her new book, How to Make It, a look into 25 creative entrepreneurs and makers and their creative processes. They also discuss Erin's writings for Design Sponge, her own photography, and much more! "It's been a real lesson for me on what people want...It's also an education process, educating people why things cost what they cost, why handmade is so important, why we need this kind of movement in our country and world because it's important to know where your items are coming from and to gift things that are more special than something you could pick up at a Black Friday sale." -Erin Austin Abbott For more Erin Austen Abbott & Amelia: https://ameliapresents.com/ Amelia Presents Instagram For more Positively Creative: Positively Creative Website Positively Creative Instagram On Today's Show: (7:30) Amelia - shop, gallery, and classes (11:30) From the 187 square feet on the Oxford Square to all under one roof in Main Street in Water Valley, MS (16:00) The Living Room Gallery, Glennray Tutor , Jonathan Kent Adams , A Study in Color (20:00) One Night Stand Show that Erin curates (25:00) How to Make It book , Chronicle Books (26:30) Studio Stories on Instagram (31:00) on photographing and writing for the book (34:00) going on tour for the book (36:00) on traveling, Field Trip blog (36:30) working for Design*Sponge (43:00) Erin's typical day and how she organizes (45:00) Dorothy blabs on about Trello (47:00) on when and what to post on Amelia Presents Instagram (53:00) Sarah, Occasionette, Girls Can Tell , Storehouse in New Jersey (54:00) Elizabeth Suzann, Jojotastic (55:00) Shopkeep Facebook Group (1:00:00) on finding artists to carry in the shop (1:05:00) Up & Vanished Podcast (1:06:00) On how she got the name Amelia Presents
On today's show, Dorothy sits down to talk with Amanda Campbell of Amanda Louise Interiors, from Greenville, South Carolina. Listen along as Amanda shares how she built her client list through social media, works with clients to create their ideal styled space, and talks about recent and upcoming collaborations. "I really think that the biggest part of style and figuring out your home is just buying things that you really love. Collecting things that really mean something to you and you're really drawn to, and not worrying about if it's on trend or really even what will look best in your space. There's something for just buying things that speak to you." "Trello is my best friend in the whole world...it has seriously changed my whole life." "Some of those big hurdles that I've gone through has really been one of the best things." "My husband says that i rearrange our living room every time there's a really good football game on, because I just sit there and rearrange furniture in my head and have to get up and start moving things, or start hanging art around the television...haha...but in the beginning it was really a laboratory for what I was trying to learn and do and it was where I really didn't have any restrictions on what I could play with and what I could do, like mixing colors and patterns. There were no stakes on if people were happy or going to like it, because it was just for me so I think I was able to try a lot of things and work through what worked for my brand and for my own home and now because I put that out there in the world, now people are allowing me to put that in their own homes and trusting me with that." Hey Rebels! We are so excited to have Dorothy Collier on the show this week! Dorothy Collier is the mixed media artist of Dorothy Art and the host of Positively Creative, a podcast for creative entrepreneurs. While growing up in the south, running around her grandmother's antique shops, she quickly found a love for all things unique...and antique. By painting oil on canvas, using backgrounds of paper from weathered books, Dorothy's pieces become narrative. She paints to create a sense of whimsical beauty and in some pieces, hopes to prompt the viewer into a child-like happiness. She uses simplistic elements to mirror her folk art influences and enjoys using quick gestural lines to give the vintage subjects a strong, soulful voice. Dorothy received her B.A. in Studio Art and Psychology from the University of Mississippi in 2009 and her MAT in Art Education at the University of Memphis in 2011. She resides in Memphis, Tennessee with her husband, John, their new addition, Johnny, and their yorkie, Oxford. Dorothy's work appears in private home collections and gift retailers throughout the southeast. Quote Love from Dorothy Hiring Creatives is the best thing! Meredith works in oil, acrylic, soft pastels, and creates her beautiful wooden framed encased weavings. Listen along as Meredith describes her studio in Downtown Greenville and all about how to juggle a retail space while painting. Meredith also clues us into how she creates a painting at a live event. Dorothy found another bestie! The two artists have too many things in common to count! And those things were just discovered with this first conversation that was recorded! "Being one of the earlier (pieces of art)...I feel like that always takes longer because you don't know what you're doing, you're just exploring, which is awesome but those are some of the most beautiful sweet moments...that exploration of the unknown if you have not done it before, you have no idea what's going to happen or how it's going to turn out.
