David Norman began his career in 1985 as a specialist in the field of Impressionist & Modern Art at Sotheby's. He became director of the department in 1999, a World-wide Chairman for the division in 2008, and then a Vice Chairman of Sotheby's North American. From 2019-2022, he was Chairman of the Phillips auction house in America. David directed sales of art works from such institutions as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Los Angeles County Museum as well as numerous other public and private foundations. In the early 1990s, David pioneered and directed Sotheby's first sales of 20th Century German art, staging the first international auction in the then unified city of Berlin. In 2004, David oversaw the auction of the first painting to ever break the $100 million barrier, Pablo Picasso's Garçon a la Pipe. In 2010, he curated Sotheby's first private selling exhibition of Modern Art in Hong Kong and Beijing. Under his leadership and tenure, Sotheby's not only sold the first $100 million painting, but also the first sculpture to exceed $100 million (Giacometti's Walking Man) and the first work on paper to pass that same mark (Edvard Munch's, The Scream). In 2017, David acquired an early pointillist painting for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. As a leading industry expert, David has been frequently quoted in publications such as the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, ArtNews and Art at Auction magazine. He has appeared on television networks such as CNBC and foreign outlets including CNN Asia, podcasts interviews for the Financial Times, China, and is a frequent contributor of articles for several online journals. One of the most recognized auction experts in the field of Impressionist & Modern Art and a trusted advisor to private collectors for over 35 years, Mr. Norman launched David Norman Fine Art, llc, to continue to advise and assist individuals and institutions worldwide. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/noah-becker4/support
Podcast Maisam: Civil Society can do the Change ... most of the people - Palestinian and Israeli people - are people who really want to live in peace. ... They want to fight for the future of their children, but we are still the silent minority. ... And while the extremists are really ruling our lives here, we should be the alternative.Maisam Jaljuli Maisam Jaljuli is the unofficial Ambassador of the civil society in Israel. Born as Arab Palestinian with an Israeli citizenship, she is living and working in the triangle region of Taybe in central Israel. Maisam is married with three kids and she seems to have endless energy engaging in various organizations in the civil society. Maisam is a true believer in the power of grassroots. She initiated and was leading NGO's to change the lives of people for the better. Her main goals are to gain social justice, gender equality and to end the occupation. This is the announcement of her latest engagement. I am very proud to be engaged with a lot of civil society organizations and being an active part of the civil society .... it really works on the grassroots level in Israel ... I think in the civil society, we are doing a great job and we are really making changes.Maisam Jaljuli Maisam grew up in an environment with strong values of equality, social justice and personal involvement. These values keep driving her to seek changes especially for women in the workplace and in politics. Maisam has been elected for three periods as chairwoman of Na'amat in the triangle region. Na'amat is a feminist organization with a link to the biggest federal Labor Union in Israel. 15 years ago, only 25% of the Arab women were engaged in the labor market. Now we reached 40%. So we have progress!Maisam Jaljuli We have met the ministry of internal security, the ministry of police after we held a demonstration near his house. We demonstrated for a whole month. It was a struggle but we succeeded. Maisam Jaljuli about her activities against violence and crime in Palestinian towns Domestic violence and the women who lost their children to crime in the Arab towns in Israel became some of her key activities in the last years. Right now, Maisam is in a transition period to change her focus even more towards the Israeli Palestinian relationships. Maisam talks openly about the struggles and conflicts she and her fellow Palestinians endure but she also sees the difficulties on the Jewish side. Her main goal is to be engaged as an active part of the Israeli society. Maisam was awarded the Walking Man prize for social activism in 2017. Her wish is to receive the full acceptance and support of the Israeli establishment for her activities as a Palestinian (and) women in Israel. We had a great inspiring conversation and I really admire her positive contagious energy to continue fighting for a better society for all. Listen to another Palestinian voice from across the boarder in Lebanon. Iman talks about her life and role as an educational specialist in a Palestinian refugee camp in Southern Lebanon.

Hello to you listening in Chicago, Illinois! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.I'd seen him walking the early morning road, an older gentleman wearing a white tee shirt stretched over a bit of a paunch and tucked into belted farmer-style dungarees, baseball cap pulled down snug over his forehead, chin to chest walking steadily and deliberately to a tune only he could hear. The other day I was walking the same early morning road and there he was. I waved “Hello!" as we do here, I'm Diane, how ya doin? Fine, he replied; I'm Stan. I've seen you walking this road; how far do you like to go? Oh, 10 miles up and back! 10 miles! Every day? No, just 2 days a week; but I've been doing it - for 20 years - rain or shine.” And off he went walking steadily, deliberately.10 miles a day, 2 days a week, for 20 years, rain or shine. My Canadian friend and colleague Charlene Norman says, “There is magic and success in consistency.” Imagine that! This is the place to thrive together. When I first noticed Walking Man, I was in my twenties and he probably wasn’t much older. The difference between us was that he never stopped walking. Season Five: This season I go back to my roots, and share some stories recorded in-studio. You’ll get one story per episode, along with a return of Paul’s Picks, where I share something I’ve been reading, watching, or listening to.The Story: It was one of those times where I just started walking and kept walking. I am The Walking Man, after all. There’s never a goal in mind, but I always seem to arrive exactly where I supposed to be.Paul’s Pick: Outside of David Sedaris, Stewart Lee has been the biggest influence on me as a performer. Simply put: he’s brilliant. Sometimes he’s almost too smart for his own good. I first heard him on Marc Maron’s podcast years ago, and quickly devoured all of his standup comedy shows. Sometimes you don’t know where he’s going, and he even seems not to know, but every story is a journey to a place I never imaged. This long story - tell it to me straight like a pear cider made out of 100% pears - is classic Lee and my absolute favourite.Podcast Partners: The live monthly event Stories We Don’t Tell has been my storytelling home for almost five years. The theme music is by singer/songwriter Arlene Paculan, check her out at officialarlene.com.Read: Read a transcript of this episode on my blog.

A lot of people use the word brand incorrectly without really thinking about what it means. What is strategic identity and how does it allow us to ask the right questions about brands? How do you define a problem and go about solving it? How do we embrace the chaos in our lives? On this episode, the grand dame of design thinking, branding and naming, Karin Hibma talks about creativity, career, and innovation. I want deep relationships and transformative things that are going to change the world. - Karin Hibma 3 Things We Learned - There's a difference between strategic identity and branding The word “brand” is a label that gets attached to many things, even when it hasn't been thought out. Too many people invest in brand energy without really knowing who they are and who they want to be. - Uncertainty breeds creativity A time of uncertainty is a creative time. If you can accept it and embrace it rather than fight it, so much more value of fruitfulness and happiness will come out of that. If you are able to embrace chaos in that uncertainty there will be more opportunities than when you resist it. - We're in a very special time in innovation and design thinking We are at a nexus point of a lot of technology and innovation like AI and VR. This means when we look back to the era we're in right now, this age is going to be unrecognizable. We're not even close to using all the innovation capacity that's out there. Exciting times are ahead. For individuals and companies, a lot of the greatest opportunities, moments, innovations and creations come out of the greatest times of uncertainty. Sometimes we make the mistake of trying to ignore and fight through the unknown by looking for a quick solution. If you are able to embrace chaos and be comfortable in that uncertainty, the universe will give you surprising answers. Guest Bio Featured in the Harvard Business Review and honored with Fast Company's “100 Most Creative People in Business” award, Karin Hibma is a design, naming and identity legend. She works to see the world through the eyes of customers, using cognitive identity insights and design thinking to find the strategic “big idea” inherent in every project. An early entrepreneur, Hibma founded creative research company Design Resource. She founded Cronan Artefact – their award-winning Walking Man apparel line was sold in one of the earliest online catalogues. Co-founder and principal of : : CRONAN : :, a strategic identity design consultancy working with change-makers looking for innovative answers, from startups to Amazon Kindle, Apple, Estée Lauder / Origins, Levi Strauss & Co., SFMOMA, TiVo and the White House.

On this episode of Positively Creative, Maggie Covert LeBlanc of Walking Man Studios talks with us about being an artist in New Orleans, keeping her business going while experiencing a family tragedy and how her art helped her heal after the loss of her niece. We also chat about her custom work and her adorable dog series! About Maggie: Maggie Covert received her Bachelor’s degree from Maryland Institute College of Art in Interdisciplinary Sculpture with a Concentration in Book Arts. She was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her home has made a huge impact on her art, as the culture, vitality, and architecture are hard to escape. Since Hurricane Katrina, Maggie has been exploring the ideas of losing the contributing factors that make a place home. She has been drawn to the repetitive nature of disastrous events along with the governmental, social, and geographic reactions to these. Her most recent work channels the whimsical nature of New Orleans’ architecture and characters. She continues to be drawn to details in the buildings and landscape of her hometown. Seeing the beauty and tireless work in each structure, She creates a connection to each establishment through the recreation of these in architectural drawings and paintings. Maggie currently works with multiple local realtors and real estate companies providing personalized illustrations and paintings for them to gift to sellers or buyers at closing. Creating connections with others who love architecture and real estate is continually inspirational to Maggie’s craft and business growth. With her studio on Magazine Street in New Orleans, Maggie continues to work on Custom Home Portraits - for locals and many from other states such as Maryland, New York, Oregon and even receiving requests from the UK. Gaining experience with multiple commercial property drawings as well as album art and wedding invitations, she has branched out to stationary work allowing her to create custom notecards, postcards and custom wedding invitations. In addition to the architectural work, Maggie has begun a series of "Walking Illustrations". Each walking piece is meant to provoke a feeling of movement (physical, emotional, spiritual, mental)- growth in one's life and development. With these illustrations, Maggie hopes to portray a joy that much art, culture and people are missing in modern times. Focusing in on joy with a little whimsy and maybe even some historical or spiritual undertones, Maggie aims to show that "everyone walks the same path." For many years, Henry Wyndham was the senior auctioneer and chairman at Sotheby's, the world renowned auction house. Known for his towering height and garrulous style, the auctioneer presided over some of the most significant bidding wars in art history. His £65 million sale of Giacometti's "Walking Man" sculpture in 2010 was at the time the most expensive piece of art ever sold at auction. Today, Henry talks to us about his failed first career as a door to door salesman, how auctioneering is all in the eyebrows, and how a shooting accident might just have changed his life for the better.

The StoryI always wanted music in my life, so I decided to buy myself a keyboard. I learned to play the piano as a child and could still read music. I found a keyboard for sale on Kijijji and when I met the seller, the conversation quickly devolved into me having to make up a fake son named James. This story was recorded live off the floor at Stories We Don’t Tell. Please note: I was sitting at the keyboard for the story. Some pauses and audience reactions were due to me about to play and then not playing. You can read the original story on my blog HERE.Paul’s PickKarl Ove Knausgaard wrote a six volume series of autobiographical novels. Full disclosure, I’ve only read the first three and starting on the fourth. I can’t really explain them, as there really is no story and there are many passages that are about the mundane. However, something very much alive lurks in the many pages of these books. I once heard Knausgaard describe these books as novels where he used himself as the main character. I used this same description when people asked about my own novel, The Walking Man. These are tough books, but stick with them, they can be at times profound and heartbreaking.

We chat about that process, employed with great success by Judd Apatow, Paul Feig and others, and how that has influenced making his own films. Josh is the editor of the Ferrel/McKay produced "Welcome To Me" starring Kristen Wiig and directed by Shira Piven. Opens May 1st, 2015. An old friend from High School, Justin Krey sits down as my special guest as we revisit Richard Stanley's cult classic, Dust Devil. After spending the better part of a decade lost in video limbo and cut to incomprehensible shreds, the film can finally be appreciated in full on DVD. A shape-shifting serial killer prays on lonely, desperate women who have lost hope and want to die. Meanwhile, a sullen cop tries to maintain order among the corrupt police force as he chases the demon across the South African desert. The Walking Man, played by Robert John Burke begins a cat and mouse game of seduction with his latest victim, as his human form conflicts with the spiritual realm.Justin and I take a look at the film's layers of social, political and spiritual themes. We also discuss the circular nature of the film's narrative structure and how the most intelligent and creative filmmakers are usually misunderstood by the Hollywood assembly line. As per usual, listen for the preemptive countdown before starting your DVD.
