Postprocessing is a necessary part of the additive manufacturing (AM) workflow in almost every instance, because 3D printing alone rarely yields a finished part ready for use. Depending on the materials and processes they choose, AM adopters have to account for depowdering, curing, heat treat, cleaning, dyeing, tumbling, machining and many other post-print operations. Using lighting to enhance texture in your photographs can add depth and visual interest to your images. Here are some techniques to achieve this: 1. Side Lighting. 2. Directional Light. 3. Diffused Light. 4. Backlighting. 5. Texture as the Subject. 6. Macro Photography. 7. Use Shadows and Highlights. 8. Fill Flash. 9. Experiment with Angles. 10. Post-Processing. This Episodes Questions: Hey guys, First of all, thanks so much for the podcast. I really enjoy the banter and the in-depth analysis you guys offer. With MMU's being so popular and with Bambu Lab's intro into the market with the AMS, I was immediately intrigued at the ability to hit a button and generate a multi-color print. However, in looking into it, I noticed the waste it was producing and just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on one and contribute to that waste pile. I'm curious if you guys had any thoughts on how you would design an "AMS-like" unit that would be able to turn out a multi-color print all while producing minimal to no waste. Or is just something that is unavoidable? Thanks again for the great content! Josh I have read a little bit online about various methods of post-processing of plastic prints to improve strength, toughness and reduce voids. I understand there is a way use a type of salt that is packed tightly around a print to maintain it's shape and then the print is annealed at high heat. Have guys tried this and if so what was your experience? To me it sounds like a great idea, but like most things the devil is likely in the details. James I'd like to include some threads on some printed parts so I can connect them using bolts. When I try to print my parts, the threads are not clean enough to use. I design them .01 proud to leave room for the bolt. I'm printing them with the bolt going through the Z-axis, but the results aren't great. Any suggestions or reference to sources to get this figured out? Paul

This week I discuss a few different softwares that I use to post process my images, some plugins, and wrap up the Bringing Home Quality series. 

Sapna Reddy and Matt Kloskowski have more in common than just colorful photos of birds in nature and soothing landscapes. In this week's episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we investigate how their respective work lives have fueled the technical mastery that allows their creative vision to flourish. We spoke with them both as part of our continuing coverage of B&H's 2022 OPTIC Conference. We begin the show with Dr. Sapna Reddy, who balances a rigorous medical career in radiology with the creative freedom of time spent outdoors, capturing scenic landscapes. Reddy's medical work is limited to a strict analysis of grayscale image data, yet her colorful landscapes provide a healing influence from the world of hospitals. Listen in to learn how she follows the light based on what nature delivers—choosing extreme wide-angle lenses for scenes with powerful foregrounds that draw the viewer's eye and using longer focal length lenses for compositions that isolate elements. Reddy also tells of mastering the technical to allow the aesthetic step in, a process she freely shares with students during awe-inspiring photography workshops in destinations both near and far. After a break, we shift the conversation to Sony Artisan Matt Kloskowski, whose passion for bird photography is central to his motto of “Embrace the Chaos.” During our chat, Kloskowski emphasizes how technical knowledge of one's gear can minimize barriers between the eye and the subject. Along with an honest assessment about absorbing failure and challenging success rates, Kloskowski describes how the blazing frame rate of his Sony A1 and its bird eye autofocus help him achieve razor sharp bird pictures. It is July 2020 and it is feeling like a “lost year” already. I've felt somewhat aimless at times, drifting about. The phrase “lost year” reminded me of John Lennon's “Lost Weekend”, actually an 18-month period. During this time he drifted a bit and wasn't really rooted anywhere. He bounced around a variety of recording studios and had lots of collaborations.Yet John was incredibly creative during this period. He finished 3 full albums and charted his first #1 US hit as a solo artist. That got me thinking. What can I learn from John's “Lost Weekend”? Is there something I can apply to my photography?I explore this idea in today's podcast. Given the current world situation, in-person collaborations aren't really feasible. However, experimenting in post-processing certainly is. I share my story of how I shook up my workflow to spark some creativity.Here are three ideas to shake up your post-processing:Use a different editing tool. Start your workflow in a place that's not typical for you. Perhaps edit an entire batch of photos using your least-used editing tool. Starting in a new place will lead you down a different path.Explore the corners of the editing tools you own. Dig deeper into the editing tool you use most. Look at filters, effects, or sliders you don't typically use. Try them out.Push your tried and true sliders in a different direction. Most of us have a few favorite sliders and filters. Push the sliders in the opposite direction than you normally do. For example, selectively desaturate colors in a HSL tool or go negative with clarity and sharpness.It is OK if you fumble around a bit. It is also OK if the photos you produce are ones you never want to share. The goal of these ideas is to make discoveries, learn, and spark creativity. EP04. When I started my photography career I made the jump from hobby photographer to fulltime photographer within a year. After working with psychology and running a successful coaching business for more than a decade, this was a scary decision to make back then. But at the same time, I had this artistic side in me that felt somehow neglected. When I finally got my first camera something inside of me instantly clicked and I was hooked and the urge to pursue photography became so consuming I couldn´t ignore it. For a while, I was doing therapy sessions during the day, and then I took pictures in the evenings and on weekends. In the end, I was running two full-time jobs and I knew I had to choose because doing both was too much and I needed more time with my family. So I chose photography, and I jumped. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It was all learning by doing and I made so many mistakes along the way.
