In June 2024, Dr. Dean Ornish and his team at the Preventive Medicine Research Institute revealed for the first time that an intensive lifestyle intervention—including a whole-food, plant-based diet—can significantly improve cognition and even halt the progression of Alzheimer's disease! Dr. Dean Ornish shares details of his compelling protocol and insights into his randomized controlled clinical trial study that demonstrated the effectiveness of dietary and lifestyle changes in reversing early stages of dementia. With nearly 7 million Americans currently living with Alzheimer's, the potential to shift this alarming trajectory offers a sense of hope. Dr. Ornish's study highlights not only the importance of nutrition but also the critical role of exercise, stress management, and social connections in promoting brain health. It's an inspiring conversation that underscores the power of simple, yet transformative lifestyle choices in combating one of the most feared diseases of our time.Takeaways: Nearly 7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's, with projections rising dramatically by 2050. Dr. Dean Ornish's lifestyle intervention significantly improves cognition and function in Alzheimer's patients. A whole food plant-based diet is central to reversing the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The study found that 71% of participants in the intervention group showed cognitive improvement. Lifestyle changes can effectively reduce Alzheimer's symptoms, contrasting with traditional drug treatments that only slow decline. A supportive community and love are crucial components in managing Alzheimer's and improving quality of life. According to the CDC,  about 659,000 people in the United States die from heart disease each year. That's 1 in every 4 deaths. A staggering 100 BILLION dollars were spent several years ago on stents and bypasses. But how effective are those dangerous, invasive, and costly procedures in improving the patient's quality of life? Is there an alternative?   Today's guest is Dr. Dean Ornish, the founder and president of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute. He is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and the author of seven books, all national bestsellers. Dr. Dean Ornish has directed revolutionary research proving that lifestyle changes can often reverse or undo the progression of many of the most common and costly chronic diseases and even begin reversing aging at a cellular level. He documented his findings in his landmark book UnDo It!   Dr. Dean Ornish studied medicine under Dr. Michael DeBakey, an American vascular surgeon and cardiac surgeon, scientist, and medical educator known for his trailblazing efforts in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.    Today, Dr. Dean Ornish is helping people regain their health with his program, The Only Program Scientifically Proven to Reverse Heart Disease, which is reimbursed by Medicare from anywhere in the U.S. 'Nuff said! Let's dive into this eye-opening episode and UnDo It!   “When I was in medical school, we were taught that the only way to change your genes is to change your parents, meaning you can't do anything about it. But we did a study with Craig Venter, who was the first to decode the human genome, and we found that over 500 genes were changed in just three months. Same lifestyle changes turning on the good genes, turning off the bad genes in simple terms. And there are mechanisms. There is something called methylation, which is a molecule that's like a switch that can turn on or turn off a gene. Technically, the genes are the same, but the expression of the genes—if you can turn off a gene that causes cancer, then it's as though you're changing your genes. Or different proteins, histone, and non-histone proteins, they act as switches, and sirtuins and others that turn on and turn off the genes. And we found that over 500 genes were changed in just three months.” - Dr. Dean Ornish   What we discuss in this episode: - Dr. Dean Ornish walks us through that pivotal moment when he met Woodstock Guru Sri Swami Satchidananda and how that encounter changed the direction of his life  - How stress increases our predisposition to cardiovascular diseases and the worst thing about being depressed - Is there something wrong with traditional medicine?  - Dr. Dean Ornish talks about the joy that his work brings, enabling people to have options vs. undergoing costly medical procedures - How to UnDo It! Eat Well, Move More, Stress Less, Love More - How comprehensive lifestyle changes influence DNA methylation and gene expression - Does eating specific foods (sweet potato meals vs. blueberry vs. cheeseburgers) influence cancer genes? - What hope do we have in getting the message to people about the way we view our health and the overall healthcare system? - Choosing a plant-based diet - What you gain is so much better than what you give up! Dan collaborated with more than 100 science professors around the globe to create his digital humanOS application. Dan has a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience from Leiden University in the Netherlands and Stanford University in the United States. He has a master's degree in exercise physiology from Florida State University and currently lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, two young boys, and their dog, Wally. Joining STEM-Talk host Dr. Ken Ford for today's conversation with Dan is Dr. Marcas Bamman, a senior research scientist here at IHMC. Marcas was a STEM-Talk guest on episode 116. In today's interview with Dan, we cover his early career in bioinformatics and how a trip to Moscow led to his doctoral research of sleep and treatments for narcolepsy. He also talks about the Loop Model to Adopt and Sustain Health Behaviors, a program he developed during his Ph.D. studies. The Loop Model became the core of his company, humanOS. Finally, Dan talks about the concepts of “actual health,” health-performance experts and a shift in what aging means, which he believes is important to improving the quality of life for all of us. Show notes: [00:03:19] Marcas starts the interview by asking Dan to talk about his years growing up in Northern California's Marin County. [00:04:06] Ken asks Dan about building radio-controlled cars with his father. [00:05:11] Marcas explains that Dan's father was a successful businessman who, after a successful career as a salesman for Remco selling kitchenware, started his own company in California that grew to 200 employees. Dan has been quoted as saying that one of the lessons he learned from his father was the value of relationships. Marcas asks how that lesson has affected Dan's life. [00:06:29] Dan talks about his passion for basketball and how his time at the Cap Lavin camp influenced his early life. [00:08:15] Marcas mentions that Dan's “science life” seems to have begun with a seventh-grade science-fair project that ended up landing him a job with Nike. Marcas asks Dan to talk about that story. Dr. Dean Ornish and I talked about purpose, joy, happiness and social connection. It was a wonderful talk. I thought a lot about what he said. He tells his story of how he struggled with depression and how he overcame. We talked a lot about how people are lacking connection, joy and love and how important those components are to healthy living. We talk about education and how one needs to understand peoples' suffering in order to really change. We talked about plant based eating, healthy lifestyle and how that can have impact on illnesses. We talked about how we all need an “undo it” button. This is one I thought about for a long time and you may have to listen to twice. Dean Ornish, M.D., is the founder and president of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF. For over 44 years, Dr. Ornish has directed randomized trials demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery. Medicare created a new benefit category to provide coverage for this program. He directed the first randomized controlled trial demonstrating that lifestyle changes may slow, stop, or reverse the progression of early-stage prostate cancer. In other research, he has shown that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, “turning on” disease-preventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer and heart disease. And in collaboration with Nobel Prize winner Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, he has shown that these lifestyle changes may begin to reverse aging on a cellular level by lengthening telomeres. He is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of seven national bestsellers, including his most recent book, UnDo It! He received many awards, including the University of California, Berkeley, “National Public Health Hero” award; the inaugural “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine; was recognized as “one of the 125 most extraordinary University of Texas alumni in the past 125 years;” by TIME magazine as a “TIME 100 Innovator;” by LIFE magazine as “one of the fifty most influential members of his generation;” by People magazine as “one of the most interesting people of the year;” and by Forbes magazine as “one of the world's seven most powerful teachers.”

“What you will gain is so much more than what you will give up.” - Dr. Dean Ornish Dean Ornish, M.D. is highly regarded as “The Father of Lifestyle Medicine,” which is the fastest-growing trend in medicine today, and today's discussion with Rip dives deep into the vast body of work and groundbreaking research that Dr. Ornish has conducted for decades. As the founder and president of the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute (PMRI) for over 40-years, he and his team of researchers have demonstrated time and again how lifestyle medicine can reverse, treat, and prevent chronic disease.  How is this possible? Eat Well, Love More, Stress Less, and Move More – all of which are outlined in Dr. Ornish's latest book, “UnDo It - How Simple Lifestyle Changes Can Reverse Most Chronic Diseases,” which has just been released in paperback.  From the beginning, Dr. Ornish was met with criticism and skepticism, which would cause even the strongest of physicians to reverse course. But, because of his conviction and the overwhelming data he has produced, the only thing reversing is YOUR chronic disease including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, early-stage prostate cancer, and now – the evidence is showing - even the progression of Alzheimer's. Medicare and many insurance companies are now covering Dr. Ornish's lifestyle medicine program for reversing chronic diseases because it consistently achieves bigger changes in lifestyle, better clinical outcomes, larger cost savings, and greater adherence than have ever been reported—based on 40 years of clinical research published in the leading peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals. Recently, Medicare even agreed to cover Dr. Ornish's program for reversing heart disease when offered virtually via Zoom. Our bodies often have a remarkable capacity to begin healing if we treat the underlying lifestyle factors that cause them—and more quickly than we had once believed. All of this is great news because, as Dr. Ornish stresses, "We don't want take hope away. In fact, we want to give people a sense of hope." He's been giving us hope for over 40 years and, thankfully, he's just getting started.  About Dr. Dean Ornish Dean Ornish, M.D., is the founder and president of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute, clinical professor of medicine at the UCSF, and the author of seven books, all national bestsellers. Eat well. Move more. Stress less. Love more.I grew up hearing about Dean Ornish, and heard more about him when I came to Satchidananda Ashram because he was a successful healthcare leader who'd been a student of Swami Satchidananda. He's said that “all of [his] work is based on what [he] learned from [Swami Satchidananda]” - work that seeks to show it's possible to reverse illnesses like heart disease with simple tools like healthy diet, exercise, meditation, and healthy personal relationships. With US healthcare projected to reach about 20% of GDP by 2028 - $1 out of every $5 of goods and services produced - in a complex system that places a heavy emphasis on drugs and surgery, I find it exciting that Dean Ornish offers treatments that aim to put patients in charge of their own healthcare through natural means and with comparatively less cost.Biography:Dean Ornish, M.D., directed clinical research proving, for the first time, the heart disease and early-stage prostate cancer may be stopped or even reversed by comprehensive lifestyle changes, without drugs or surgery. He is founder and president of the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. His newest research was the first to show that changing your lifestyle changes your genes - "turning on" disease-preventing genes, and "turning off" genes that promote breast cancer, heart disease, and other illness, and increasing telomeres - the ends of your chromosomes that control how long you live. Our genes are not our fate.He is Medical Editor of The Huffington Post, chairs the Google Health Advisory Council, and authored six best-selling books including his most recent, "Undo It!" About Dean Ornish MD Dean Ornish, M.D., is the Founder and President of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute, and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and also at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Ornish was trained in internal medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He earned a B.A. in Humanities summa cum laude from the University of Texas in Austin, where he gave the baccalaureate address.   For over 40 years, he has directed clinical research demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse many chronic diseases, including even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery.  Medicare created a new benefit category, “intensive cardiac rehabilitation,” to provide coverage for this program.   He directed the first randomized controlled trial demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may slow, stop or reverse the progression of early-stage prostate cancer.  His research showed that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, “turning on” disease-preventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer and heart disease, as well as the first controlled study showing that these lifestyle changes may begin to reverse cellular aging by lengthening telomeres, the ends of our chromosomes which regulate aging (in collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine & Physiology).   His research and writings have been published in the leading peer-reviewed medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, Lancet, and New England Journal of Medicine. His work has been featured in all major media, including cover stories in Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News & World Report. He has received numerous awards, including the 1994 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award from the University of Texas, Austin, the National Public Health Hero Award from the University of California, Berkeley, a U.S. Surgeon General Citation, the Beckmann Medal from the German Society for Prevention and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Diseases, a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association, the Stanley Wallach Award from the American College of Nutrition, the Plantrician Project Luminary Award, and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Ornish’s TED talks have been viewed by more than 5 million people.  He has written a monthly column for TIME, Newsweek and Reader’s Digest magazines, is a LinkedIn Influencer, was the medical editor for the Huffington Post,(2009-2016), and cochaired Google Health with Marissa Mayer (2007-2009).   He was appointed by President Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and by President Obama to the White House Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health.   The “Ornish diet” has been rated “#1 for Heart Health” by U.S. News & World Report every year from 2011-2017.  The author of six books, all national bestsellers, he was honored as “one of the 125 most extraordinary University of Texas alumni in the past 125 years;” by TIME magazine as a “TIME 100 Innovator;” by Life magazine as “one of the 50 most influential members of his generation;” and by Forbes magazine as “one of the world’s seven most powerful teachers.” About Anne Ornish Anne Ornish is the Digital Director of Ornish Lifestyle Medicine and Vice President of Program Development at the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute.  She received a B.A. in Art History and Digital Art in 1997 with honors from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is the creator of Ornish Lifestyle Medicine's digital platform—including ornish.com—and Empower, a turnkey learning management system that trains health care professionals throughout the country.  Empower also guides participants through foundational courses that support people to transform suffering into health and well-being.  Empower provides best in class tools for sustainable behavior change and ongoing healthy living via enlivening educational and practice videos, workshops and community support. Her multimedia series of guided meditation practices are featured on a DVD inside Dr. Ornish’s book, The Spectrum, and at ornish.com. “It's not just about living longer, it's about feeling better and improving the quality of life.”Dr. Dean OrnishToday we explore what it truly means to live healthy and well. It's obvious that diet and exercise play a crucial role in this equation. Of course, mental health is key. And we're waking up to the importance of meditation and mindfulness. But what about spirituality? What role do connection, relationships and love play in the wellness equation? And how important is purpose? In truth, attention to all such factors is crucial. Because they are indeed connected. Interdependent. And absolutely necessary to live your best life. Our guides for this discussion are Dean Ornish, MD & Anne Ornish — the world-renown, pioneering power couple of lifestyle medicine. An early advocate and practitioner of preventive medicine long before it was trendy, Dr. Ornish is an absolute legend in the plant-based nutrition movement for his groundbreaking work in the holistic prevention and reversal of chronic lifestyle diseases such as atherosclerosis, America's #1 killer.Perhaps best known as the doctor who assisted President Clinton post heart procedure, Dean was trained in internal medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital. He is currently a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and the president and founder of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito. The author of six best-selling books, Dean was recognized as a “Time 100 Innovator”; by Life magazine as “one of the 50 most influential members of his generation”; by People as “one of the most interesting people of the year”; and by Forbes as “one of the world’s seven most powerful teachers.Highly trained and experienced in lifestyle medicine, yoga therapy, mobile applications and web design, Anne Ornish is extraordinary in her own right. A must read, it bookstores everywhere January 8 and is currently available now for pre-order now*.Given Dean and Anne's background, it would be fair to suspect that today’s conversation would be monopolized by diet. Of course we cover nutrition, including the scientific, peer reviewed research supporting the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle and how it measures up against other popular diet and nutrition protocols. But this exchange is also about the myriad of other crucial (and often overlooked or under-appreciated) factors imperative to consider in our personal health, wellness and longevity equation. We discuss the destructive role of stress and anxiety on the immune system. Examples are schizophrenia, depression, intellectual disabilities and disorders due to drug abuse. Most of these disorders can be successfully treated. This episode explores the characteristics of mental health disorders and why it is so hard to treat them. Hear from three speakers: Dean Ornish, Clinical Professor in Medicine, President and Director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute at University of California Sans Francisco talks about the critical aspect of depression, which is the changes in perception that prevent a depressed person to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The Health Technology Forum is on an incredible growth trajectory. A few years ago, they were a Silicon Valley health tech meet-up. Now they have a national footprint with 4500 members and 13 chapters in 5 different countries: San Francisco, Dallas/FortWorth, San Diego, New York City, Atlanta, Washington DC, Austin, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, London, Bangalore, and Manila. They have held close to 100 events world-wide, and some of them, like the upcoming Innovation Conference, have become “must attend” events in the health tech space.   In this chat on TDWI Radio, we asked the Founder, Pronoy Saha, about his passion in health and technology and his upcoming "Innovation Conference". To give a sneak peak: Saha's passion is to improve access to health care globally using technology. To do so, he organized a hackathon this last weekend focused on behavioral health - a topic that is often ignored in the rush to produce fitness apps and wearables. He and his team have also organized their upcoming annual Health Technology Forum (HTF) "Innovation Conference", themed "Pathways to Sustainable Health." There are more than 75 speakers including keynoter, Dean Ornish MD of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute at UCSF; Stefano Bertozzi, MD, PhD, Dean of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health; Geoffrey Clapp, CEO of Better, and Eric Bing, Director, Global Health at George W. Bush Institute. And as an added bonus all of the competitors in the hackathon (mentioned above) are invited to attend and the top 4 winners will be demo'ing at the meeting. Join us as Pronoy describes the journey.  It should be fun.
