Today we welcome back Dr. Charles Raison to this Sauna Talk podcast part 2. I encourage you to check in with Part one, where Chuck and i work from the starting block about Sauna health benefits and research surrounding hypethermia and hot/cold contrast therapy. In this episode, by design we go deeper. We unpack hot cold therapy as a novel treatment for mental health. 101.3 101.3 isn't just the radio frequency for a hit music station in the Twin Cities. We have foundational research surrounding the effects on the body and the mind of achieving this core body temperature. Ashley Mason's work at University of California San Francisco is expanding upon the psychological and physiological effects of this level of heat stress when reaching this core body temperature. Physically, from, for example the standpoint of blood pressure and heart rate variability. Yet how do these physical changes affect people's moods? Specifically, as a possible novel treatment in the area of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Totonu The Japanese have a word for that nirvana feeling we get after a few sauna rounds and cold therapy action. They call it Totonu. And there is actually a published study on the neuro effects of sauna bathing. We link to this study on the Sauna Research Institute website as well as on SaunaTimes websites. In the study, it is recognized that sauna is an activity that promotes relaxation and health. Three cycles of sauna, cold, rest lowers your heart rate and makes you feel more relaxed. Intense feelings of happiness have been reported shortly after enjoying a hot sauna and cold water, what is known in Japan as the “totonou” state. With this contrast therapy, we achieve a lower heart rate, changes of brain waves, and better metabolic health through the increase in brown fat production – known as “the good fat”. And one could argue that, for those horizontally challenged, sauna use raises heart rate to about the state we achieve with a fast walk. So there is a weight loss association to regular sauna use. But this is not something i'd get the scale out to rely upon. The Vail Project – Eagle Valley We discuss a “Top Flight Sauna” for Vail Health's Behavioral Health Innovation Center. Right now in development, the CHILL'D Study (“Cold and Heat Investigation to Lower Levels of Depression”) will explore ways to optimize the proven benefits of hyperthermia for depression, including whether adding cold to heat will improve outcomes and whether hyperthermia can be effectively combined with standard antidepressants. Vail Health is especially interested in thermic bathing within ancient practices. Many of us listening enjoy Nordic style sauna, where we pay homage to the origins of the word sauna (Finland). And sometimes many spend a lot of effort scolding its improper pronunciation. Yet, for those of us that share and know that good feeling, the definition of sauna is arguably much more important than its pronunciation. And for that matter, the definition of sauna is universal and straightforward: Sauna Definition: A room, often lined with wood, with a heat source that heats rocks to sufficient temperature to create steam when water is tossed on rocks. So, for example, Temascal, Native American Sweat Lodge, Banya and venik treatments, are all ancient sauna sweat bathing practices. Chris Lindley is Chief Population Health Officer, Vail Health and the Executive Director, Eagle Valley Behavioral HealthExecutive Director at Eagle Valley Behavioral Health. I will save his bio for what I hope to be a dedicated podcast interview with Chris. But a quick note: Chris's education and passion revolve around improving the population's health, emergency response, and wellness. Chris is a decorated combat veteran, receiving a Bronze Star and Presidential Citation while leading troops in Iraq in 2005. The convergence of the Sauna Research Institute, Vail Health, and the work happening with Charles through Ashley in San Francisco, Chris and team at Vail Health, as well as at Harvard are exciting examples for all of us, that right now, what we all know to be true is being studied and researched. Sauna is good for us! Soon, as we continue to unpack and understand how.. and why.. and how much.. I will say, I hope you enjoy my visit with Dr. Charles Raison.. and Sauna on!

In this episode, Carol discusses how early in her career she was hired to be the assistant director of training for a child and family guidance clinic, and became very intrigued in the processes of clinical supervision. After a decade, she became Director of Training at another American Psychological Association accredited program and developed the site visit documentation, which led her to collaborate with her future coauthor, Ed Shafranske, Ph.D., to develop a model of supervision. She explained how their model is transtheoretical, providing a framework for supervisors to provide supervision systematically and intentionally. She said that most clinicians provide supervision the way they were supervised, through osmosis, or internalizing practices done unto them, rather than using a particular model or being guided by research and evidence. She pointed out that increasingly, high rates of inadequate and even harmful supervision are being reported by supervisees, and how the process of becoming a supervisor varies dramatically. Some supervisors simply begin, utilizing practices that were done unto them during their training trajectory; others have taken a workshop, and some have a longer training period with a substantial sequence of courseswork, experiential training, video review, and targeted feedback to develop their skills as a supervisor. She explained that in their model focus is on a process that includes development of the supervisory alliance, monitoring that alliance over time attentive to the perspectives of cultural humility with respect to the clients, supervisees, and supervisor. Additionally it includes focus on reacivity or countertransference, supervisee self-care, legal and ethical issues, attending to a communitarian constellation, an environment of caring, respect, and support. We discussed having strong boundaries around supporting the supervisee in instances of reactivity in regards to client, while at the same time, never crossing the boundary to provide psychotherapy to the supervisee. In talking about supporting supervisees, she discussed trauma informed supervision and helping supervisees to have an understanding how their nervous system is affected, as well as helping them have tools for regulating their activation. She pointed out that the ultimate job of the supervisor is to protect clients, and gatekeeping, ensuring that unsuitable supervisees do not enter the profession. Carol discussed cultural humility and power in the supervisory relationship and how she and her co-author encourage supervisors to be open about their various identities and privilege from the outset of the supervisory relationship and throughout. She encourages giving feedback regularly throughout supervision, and being honest and transparent about the supervisee's development and scaffolding their strengths to improve the areas that are in development, rather than avoiding giving corrective feedback until review time. She discusses how monitoring client outcomes and feedback is critical and often left out in supervision, as well as encouraging supervisee self-assessment and not being fearful of give needed feedback to the supervisee. Carol Falender, Ph.D. is co-author of multiple books on clinical supervision including Clinical Supervision: A Competency-based Approach (2004; second edition, 2021), Getting the Most Out of Clinical Training and Supervision: A Guide for Practicum Students and Interns (2012) The Essentials of Competency-based Clinical Supervision (2017), co-editor of Casebook for Competency-based Clinical Supervision and all with Edward Shafranske; Multiculturalism and Diversity in Clinical Supervision: A Competency-based Approach (2014) edited with Edward Shafranske and Celia Falicov. She edited one book on consultation, Consultation in Psychology: A Competency-based Approach (2020) with Edward Shafranske. She has written numerous articles and conducted workshops and symposia internationally. She directed APA approved training programs for over 20 years and was a member of the Supervision Guidelines Group of the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) and Chair of the Supervision Guidelines Task Force of the Board of Educational Affairs of APA. Dr. Falender is a Fellow of American Psychological Association (APA; Divisions 37. 29 and 43). (This interview is dedicated to my friend Randy Lee, a dedicated public health nurse, who passed away earlier this week.) Justin Smith in his book published earlier this year, The Internet is Not What You Think It Is, argued the internet is addictive, its use of algorithms leaves our lives warped and impoverished and despite these problems there is little or no federal regulatory oversight. Concerning the internet's effects on children, Dr. Linn argues in her recently published work, Who's Raising the Kids, that our digital landscape essentially invades children's privacy in order to use their personal information to drive endless consumerism. Children's screen use, that amounts to upwards of 7.5 hours on average per day - substantially longer for poor and minority children - is having profound negative effects on children of every age. Generally by threatening childhood development and more specifically Dr. Linn noted by, for example, driving childhood anxiety, conflictual relationships with parents and family stress, depression, diminished language development, eating disorders, erosion of creative play, materialistic values, obesity, precocious sexuality, sleep disturbances, underachievement in school and youth violence.During this 35 minute interview Dr. Linn begins by explaining how Mattel's Aristotle (never commercially launched) and Epic's Fortnite are designed to drive revenue. She discusses how digital games erodes or undermines children's creative play, how the use of various marketing tools or approaches drive every digital experience leading to a purchase, for example, by creating "frictionless" online experiences. She discusses the influence corporations have in formal education programming via Sponsored Education Materials (SEMS), discusses what parents can do to monitor children's screen use, what federal policies have been proposed to protect children's privacy and regulate how digital game design and what action the American Psychological Association has taken. Dr. Susan Linn is currently a Research Associate at Boston Children's Hospital and Lecturer on Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She has lectured on the importance of creative play, the impact of media and marketing on children and the use of puppetry as a therapeutic tool in venues throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. From 2000 to 2015 Dr. Linn was the Founding Director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. Dr. Linn and her puppets appeared in several episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. She has written and appeared in a number of video programs designed to help children cope with issues ranging from mental illness to death and loss. This Secret Should Be Told, a syndicated TV program for children about sexual abuse won her a coveted Action for Children's Television and earned Dr. Linn a New England Emmy Award. With Fred Rogers' production company, Dr. Linn created the acclaimed educational video series Different and the Same: Helping Children Identify and Prevent Prejudice. Different and the Same has been used in classrooms in all 50 states and won numerous awards including the two top prizes from the International Communication Film and Video Competition and the Media Award from the Association of Multicultural Educators. Her book, Consuming Kids helped launch the movement to reclaim childhood from corporate marketers. Her work has been featured on Good Morning America, Today, Sixty Minutes, Dateline, The Colbert Report, and the acclaimed documentary The Corporation. Among other honors, Dr. Linn received an UNIMA-USA citation for excellence; a special award for puppet therapy from Puppeteers of America; A Champion of Freedom Award from the Electronic Privacy Information Center; The Creative Leadership Award from the Puppet Showplace Theater; and, a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association for her work on behalf of children.Information on Who's Raising the Kids is at: https://thenewpress.com/books/whos-raising-kids. “SARGE!” is a fascinating memoir by the late Chicago Police Detective Sergeant John A. DiMaggio, one of the most decorated officers on the force during a career that spanned the years 1957 to 1991. Among his awards are two Superintendent's Awards of Valor, Mayor Richard J. Daley's Praiseworthy Acknowledgment Plaque for Exceptional Act of Bravery Involving Risk of Life, a Presidential Citation of Appreciation, the Illinois Police Association Award of Valor, and many more.Upon his retirement in 1991, DiMaggio wrote a fascinating account of his work as a cop. The manuscript languished among his personal effects until after his death in 2008, after which his family decided to resurrect it, spruce it up, and submit it for publication. It turns out that he was an excellent word craftsman and storyteller; in fact, he was no stranger to writing—for many years he wrote the “Ask Sarge” column for the Mystery Writers of America Midwest Chapter newsletter.Told in a conversational, “regular guy” voice in episodic fashion, “SARGE!” reveals to the reader what it was really like to be a cop. The manuscript in many ways takes the form of a prose treatment of a weekly television police drama. A large selection of PHOTOS is included.DiMaggio takes the reader back to the decades such as the turbulent 1960s, when the police department was making a painful transition from “old school” to modernization. The author describes firsthand the legendary riots that occurred in Chicago after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. He illustrates the integration of minorities into the department and how that played out. He also goes into famous cases of corruption and the politics of navigating such a large department. One of the “set pieces” of the book is the story of how DiMaggio, as part of the “Three Musketeers”—a trio that included two detectives who were close friends—investigated a series of terrifying slasher attacks on women that occurred in the city in the mid-70s. The case became one of the police department's most memorable. Among the other cases detailed in the book include how DiMaggio found himself entering the home of a crazed young man holding hostages with a shotgun; the investigation of the discovery of a headless corpse; the take-down of the Chicago “Mad Bomber”; how an anonymous audio tape provided clues to the identities of armed robbers; and the manhunt for a cop killer. Can science and religion truly coexist, or are they forever locked in conflict? Kenneth Miller approaches this question from a unique perspective. In focusing on a few of today's most contentious issues, he explores if science can be understood in a religious context, or have we finally reached the end of faith? Modern science has its roots in western religious thought, was nurtured in universities established for religious reasons, and owes some of its greatest discoveries to scientists who themselves were people of faith. Nonetheless, on one issue after another, from evolution to the "big bang" to the age of the Earth itself, religion is often on a collision course with scientific thought. On one side, religious believers have constructed pseudosciences to justify narrow interpretations of scripture or to support specific religious claims. On the other, non-believers have used scientific authority to label faith a "delusion" to be set aside. Kenneth Miller is a professor of biology at Brown University. He has received six major teaching awards at Brown, the Presidential Citation of the American Institute for Biological Science, and the Public Service Award of the American Society for Cell Biology. In 2009 he was honored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science for Advancing the Public Understanding of Science, and also received the Gregor Mendel Medal from Villanova University. In 2011 he was presented with the Stephen Jay Gould Prize by the Society for the Study of Evolution.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

British Columbia's unemployment rate has more than doubled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. New numbers from Statistics Canada show BC's unemployment rate for April is 11 and a half per cent. Pre-pandemic, that number was five per cent. BC's Minister of Finance says most of the job losses are in the food and wholesale/retail sectors. Carole James says she is hoping employment numbers will improve with the gradual reopening of those businesses. More than 400,000 British Columbians have applied for the BC Benefit for Workers. James says the government is turning its attention to how it can best spend the one and a half billion dollars it has earmarked for economic recovery. She says she welcomes ideas from all British Columbians but admits there is still a hard road ahead, and it could take years for the province to fully recover.BC's Provincial Health Officer says there is help for small businesses that are unsure how to navigate safe openings during the pandemic. On Wednesday, the Premier announced that restaurants, pubs, hairdressers, barbers, and a series of personal health providers like dentists, chiropractors and counsellors will be allowed to reopen their doors after the May long weekend, if they follow provincial pandemic guidelines to do so safely. Dr. Bonnie Henry says specific plans for each sector, including templates and checklists are coming soon. She says individual business plans for reopening do not have to be approved by the province, but they do have to be publicly posted, whether on websites or taped to the entrance to the business. The idea is to instill public confidence that businesses are taking all the necessary steps to ensure their customers and staff are best protected from COVID-19.The Vancouver Island Regional Library is being recognized with an international award for a series of programs on indigenous affairs. VIRL's Indigenous Voices Initiative will receive a Presidential Citation for Innovative International Library Projects from the American Library Association. The "Indigenous Voices Initiative" was created in 2018. It has presented forums on reconciliation, residential schools and creation stories, along with organizing medicine walks, drum making sessions and smudging ceremonies. More than 1300 people have attended almost 60 elder-led programs and the library says more are planned for the future. An article about Indigenous Voices will be published in the July issue of American Libraries Magazine.Written and reported by Lisa Cordasco. Hosted by: Dr. Danielle Belardo Instagram: @theveggiemd Twitter: @theveggiemd Facebook: The Veggie MD Produced by: Dr. Kasey Johnson Instagram: @drkaseyjohnson This weeks episode features the return of incredible lifestyle medicine team Dr. Dean Ornish, and his wife Anne Ornish. -- Part THREE! About Dean Ornish MD Dean Ornish, M.D., is the Founder and President of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute, and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and also at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Ornish was trained in internal medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He earned a B.A. in Humanities summa cum laude from the University of Texas in Austin, where he gave the baccalaureate address. For over 40 years, he has directed clinical research demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse many chronic diseases, including even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery. Medicare created a new benefit category, “intensive cardiac rehabilitation,” to provide coverage for this program. He directed the first randomized controlled trial demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may slow, stop or reverse the progression of early-stage prostate cancer. His research showed that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, “turning on” disease-preventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer and heart disease, as well as the first controlled study showing that these lifestyle changes may begin to reverse cellular aging by lengthening telomeres, the ends of our chromosomes which regulate aging (in collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine & Physiology). His research and writings have been published in the leading peer-reviewed medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, Lancet, and New England Journal of Medicine. His work has been featured in all major media, including cover stories in Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News & World Report. He has received numerous awards, including the 1994 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award from the University of Texas, Austin, the National Public Health Hero Award from the University of California, Berkeley, a U.S. Surgeon General Citation, the Beckmann Medal from the German Society for Prevention and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Diseases, a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association, the Stanley Wallach Award from the American College of Nutrition, the Plantrician Project Luminary Award, and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Ornish’s TED talks have been viewed by more than 5 million people. He has written a monthly column for TIME, Newsweek and Reader’s Digest magazines, is a LinkedIn Influencer, was the medical editor for the Huffington Post,(2009-2016), and cochaired Google Health with Marissa Mayer (2007-2009). He was appointed by President Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy and by President Obama to the White House Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health. It's a pleasure to be spending this time with you. One of the activities that I do each week is I set aside some time to sit down and brainstorm about all the various topics that are related to chronic pain. The reason why I do that is it helps me find interesting and inspiring people to share with you on this show. If you follow this show for probably for a couple of years I've been doing it, you know that I've spoken about popular topics such as pain education, pain psychology, exercise, physical therapy and nutrition. One topic that interests me and quite frankly is the topic that doesn't receive enough attention in the media or receive grant money for research is the topic of health disparities. A health disparity is a difference in the health status of different groups of people. For example, patients such as racial minorities and women have been identified as not receiving adequate pain care. Another group that faces significant barriers, adequate healthcare are transgender people. Transgender is an umbrella term for a diverse group of people whose gender identity or expression differs from societal expectations of how they should look, act or identify based on the sex they were assigned at birth. There are approximately 1.5 million transgender people living in the United States of America. Although this data is incomplete because many transgender people feel uncomfortable or feel that it's not safe to share their personal information. From a healthcare perspective, transgender people experience higher rates of suffering and disabling conditions including a wide range of mental health problems and chronic pain conditions including chronic pelvic pain. Unfortunately, when transgender people seek treatment, they often encounter providers who do not understand their unique needs, face challenges with health insurance and are often neglected or perhaps even mistreated within the healthcare system. Here to speak with us about improving transgender healthcare is Dr. lore m. dickey. lore was raised as a female but never truly felt at home with the female identity. Several years after his transition, he returned to school to become a licensed clinical psychologist. He learned early in life that the best way to make a change is to be part of the solution. lore is the author of two books, 22 journal articles and seventeen book chapters. He's an advocate for the trans community and a prolific and engaging speaker. lore is also providing you with two free resources that you can download on the show. The first is the American Psychological Association Task Force on Guidelines for Psychology Practice with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming People. lore developed these guidelines along with the APA. The second is a complete list of all the books and book chapters which lore has contributed to. lore did receive the 2014 Presidential Citation by the American Psychological Association for his dedication to the LGBT community. He's got great resources. Take a moment now to download them. To download them, all you have to do is text the word, 137DOWNLOAD, to the number 44-222. You can do that right on your smartphone or if you're on a computer, you can open up a new browser and type in the URL www.IntegrativePainScienceInstitute.com/137download. lore is a leader in transgender healthcare. I want to thank him for joining us on this show and all the work that he's doing for the transgender community. Let's begin and let's meet Dr. lore dickey. Richard Harris has covered science, medicine and the environment for National Public Radio since 1986. He has traveled the world, from the South Pole and the Great Barrier Reef to the Arctic Ocean, reporting on climate change. The American Geophysical Union honored him with a Presidential Citation for Science and Society. In 2014, he turned his attention back to biomedical research and came to realize how the field was suffering. Too many scientists were chasing too little funding. That led him to take a year-long sabbatical at Arizona State University’s Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes to research and write Rigor Mortis.

The “Ornish diet” has been rated “#1 for Heart Health” by U.S. News & World Report every year from 2011-2017. Can science and religion truly coexist or are they forever locked in conflict? Kenneth Miller approaches this question from a unique perspective. In focusing on a few of today's most contentious issues, he explores if science can be understood in a religious context, or have we finally reached the end of faith? Kenneth Miller is a professor of biology at Brown University. He has received 6 major teaching awards at Brown, the Presidential Citation of the American Institute for Biological Science, and the Public Service Award of the American Society for Cell Biology. In 2009 he was honored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science for Advancing the Public Understanding of Science, and also received the Gregor Mendel Medal from Villanova University. In 2011 he was presented with the Stephen Jay Gould Prize by the Society for the Study of Evolution.
