In this episode, Dave deBronkart and Christina Farr, champions of patient-centered digital health, join Lee to talk about how AI is reshaping healthcare in terms of patient empowerment and emerging digital health business models. DeBronkart, a cancer survivor and longtime advocate for patient empowerment, discusses how AI tools like ChatGPT can help patients better understand their conditions, navigate the healthcare system, and communicate more effectively with clinicians. Farr, a healthcare investor and former journalist, talks about the evolving digital health–startup ecosystem, highlighting where AI is having the most meaningful impact—particularly in women's health, pediatrics, and elder care. She also explores consumer trends, like the rise of cash-pay healthcare.
The stock market has been a tad volatile lately. But this month, the digital physical therapy company Hinge Health filed for an initial public offering. Plus, a new tool out of Stanford University evaluates how various AI models perform in real-world health care. It grades them on tasks from patient education to clinical note generation. But first, Nvidia just hosted its annual GTC confab, where it announced a whole lot of collaborations and, of course, some new and improved chips. Main takeaway: The company has its fingers in a bunch of AI pies. Marketplace's Meghan McCarty Carino discusses all of this with Christina Farr, managing director at Manatt Health.

There’s been a lot of discussion about health insurance over the last week. And one practice could be seeing more oversight: the use of artificial intelligence in coverage decisions. Plus, the FDA issues final guidance for makers of AI-enabled medical devices so they can now update their software after approval. And it was a good year for health tech startups — after a not-so-good year in 2023 — especially for those with the letters “AI” attached to their business. Our regular contributor Christina Farr, managing director with Manatt Health, joins Marketplace's Meghan McCarty Carino to discuss the news.

Paradoxical as it may seem, this is the thesis of Tryggvi Thorgeirsson and his team at Sidekick Health. As a medical doctor trained in Iceland in the 2000s, Tryggvi experienced rural medicine firsthand and what working as a general practitioner in a remote setting means. And he quickly found himself confronted with the limitations posed by the healthcare system at the time: Prescribing medications at the expense of other therapies where patients are guided toward healthier behaviors. The silos and impossibility of establishing a care plan that simultaneously takes into account multiple conditions. A purely reactive approach based on a brick-and-mortar model running out of steam. The emergence of smartphones and their potential as health companions became obvious to him. Based on this intuition, he co-founded Sidekick Health alongside his fellow physician and colleague Saemundur Oddsson. The company is now one of the leaders in digital therapeutics, offering a vast portfolio of therapies accessible from each patient's pocket, prescribed by thousands of doctors in Europe and the US. We talk with Tryggvi about the principles behind how these digital therapies work, how attention levers can be used to support long-term behavior change, and the growing impact these solutions have on individuals and healthcare systems. In the era of social media and the mental plague they represent, this episode brings a refreshing perspective on how dopamine can be used to put the health of individuals back in their own hands. Timeline: 02:35 - Tryggvi's background as a medical doctor and electrical engineer 04:05 - What felt missing in Tryggvi's rural medical practice 07:14 - Seeing early the potential of smartphones for healthcare 11:08 - Tryggvi's definition of digital therapeutics 13:44 - The impact of digital therapeutics on clinical outcomes and cost of care 16:44 - Driving behavioral change and medical education through timely bite-sized pieces and gamification 18:40 - Sidekick Health's approach to designing tailored and impactful digital health programs across multiple conditions 27:46 - Putting AI at the center of digital health programs and their usage 30:13 - Tryggvi's vision for the future of healthcare What we also talked about with Tryggvi: PINK! Prof. Pia Wülfing Pear Therapeutics Daniel Kahneman Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health We cited with Tryggvi some of the past episodes of the series: #7 - Redefining motor rehabilitation with digital neurotherapeutics - Naveed Ejaz - MindMaze #17 - Coaching as the key to a better health - Eugene Borukhovich - YourCoach.Health #30 - Building the Shopify of digital health - Dan Vahdat - Huma As mentioned by Tryggvi during the episode, we recommend reading Exits & Outcomes by Brian Dolan as well as Second Opinion by Christina Farr, two newsletters that will keep you posted on the latest in digital health. "History 102" with WhatifAltHist's Rudyard Lynch and Erik Torenberg Key Takeaways Our society obsesses over African slavery; it has become a deep psychological neurosis that tears society apart Africa had three different slave trades from the Middle Ages to the 20th centuryThe internal African slave (the largest) The Muslim slave trade (selling slaves to the Muslim world; 2nd largest) The Western European slave trade (3rd largest)Throughout human history, Africa was the place that the most slaves were pulled out of – contrasted with other areas such as Europe and Asia, which had centralized governments that were able to protect their citizens Once Africa became a part of the global economy, it realized that it could offer slaves in exchange for goods and servicesThe vast majority of people involved in the African slave trade were black “I don't think any serious historian could ever support the 1619 Project who is not an ideologue. It's not even a historical argument; it's a political argument masquerading through history.” – Rudyard Lynch Because America was so wealthy, African-American slaves had a higher quality of living than the peasantries of Europe did; however, African-American slaves were disenfranchised from any sort of respect or social standards “I think the British ending slavery in the 1830s and 40s is one of the most admirable things a country has done.” – Rudyard Lynch The West practiced slavery, but it was also a society that ended it – which is historically rareAs religions developed and spread around the globe, they eventually abolished slavery among their people Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode of History 102, WhatifAltHist creator Rudyard Lynch and Erik Torenberg discuss the history of the Muslim slave trade, a forgotten tragedy that predates and rivals the Atlantic slave trade in both scale and brutality. Dive into the complex dynamics and enduring impact of this dark chapter in African history, and explore the Muslim and internal slave trades while also challenging the 1619 Project's narrative. Learn about the broader context of global slavery, the complex origins of racial inequality, and the global network that fueled the transatlantic slave trade.

This week: Startups are taking longer to go public or sell to a buyer. What does that say about the state of tech? Also, the dating app Bumble once courted women by letting them make the first move. We’ll explain why Gen Z is prompting Bumble to change things up. But first, discount retail giant Walmart announced this week it is shutting down its telehealth business, as well as its network of low-cost health clinics. There were 51 of those clinics scattered across five states throughout the country. They were part of Walmart’s big push into health care, announced in 2019. So what happened? Marketplace's Lily Jamali is joined by Christina Farr, author of the health tech newsletter Second Opinion, for her take on this week's tech news.

Christina Farr wrote a great piece on the CMO role in Digital Health. Hiring or making the leap, this is a must read.FTA:Not all CMO jobs are the sameAccording to Accolade's CMO Dr. Shantanu Nundy, these are the four major types of CMO roles he tends to see in digital health:- CMO Product- CMO Sales- CMO Clinical Operations- CMO OpticsMixing two culturesDr. Davis Liu from telemedicine start-up Lemonaid said it's important that doctors moving into health-tech have a “curiosity/growth” mindset and be open to healthy levels of conflict with other teams (it should be “task-related” versus personal, he stresses). ----Other questions that get addressed:- Where to recruit CMOs?- To practice or not to practice?- What level of clinical training is needed to go into #digitalhealth? I've found that like other roles, cultural fit is one of the most important indicators for future success. That is, matching the goals of the organization with the hire. Clearly expertise and reputation are important factors, but when you plug a person into a leadership role it has to work, it has to feel natural and it has to make the whole better.
