The Big Story Ep 83: PSLE entry scores explained; No need for perfect results to get into top sec schools 11:26 mins Synopsis: This is a special episode of The Straits Times' video series The Big Story. Primary Six pupils will not need to achieve perfect scores to get into top secondary schools when the new PSLE scoring system takes effect this year, based on entry scores for 139 secondary schools released on Tuesday (April 27) by the Education Ministry. The indicative cut-off scores are based on the new PSLE scoring system, which will be used for the first time by this year's Primary 6 cohort to gain entry to secondary schools next year. Senior education correspondent Sandra Davie advises parents on how to choose the right school for their children, instead of the top school. In November 2020, a news story went viral - many Singaporeans were moved by a young boy's courage, resilience and love in the face of suffering. The boy's name is Raphael Lee. Despite battling cancer, he soldiered on and took his PSLE. Before he could receive his results, he passed on after complications from a surgery. His parents, William and Winnie Lee, took his results on his behalf, and gave interviews on Raphael's journey. On this episode, I speak with William in an intimate setting, on Raphael's life and lessons learnt, and finding strength to care for Raphael while he was growing up, and now, to move on strongly. I was nervous before the podcast, given it's sensitive nature. Yet, William was so open hearted and assuring, letting me know he is ok with the questions. He wishes to celebrate Raphael's life, allow others to learn from him, and move on strongly. Needless to say, I got deep insights from listening, and was moved to tears by some stories William shared. I hope this episode represents him and Raphael's message well.
Welcome to Woman Leadership show. I'm Janet and in this episode, I will be sharing with you what was my childhood dream. I wanted to be a princess when I was young, beautiful and be saved by charming prince who can sweep off my feet and lived happily after so I loved to play and pretend to be princess in school and at home living in my fantasy that one day a prince in white horse saved me from the provision shop that I was staying and go to faraway place where we lived heavily after with no worries. One day, my teacher asked us what would we want to be when we grew up. I said to be a teacher because I saw how my primary school grades have improved because of my primary school teacher who was there for me and encouraged me to unlease my potential and did well in PSLE and subsequently in secondary school. I thought I would be failure but I could make it to A student. I loved to teach my cousins and would give little stickers for good work and mark their work. I also helped my classmates who are weak and help them to copy questions and got them to practice Maths questions. During those days, I don't have copier machine at home but I will copy. At the same time, I became so familiar with questions and workings that I was being selected to participate in school maths competition. After I completed my A levels, I was contemplating if to go to National Institute of Education since my A level results were not good enough to go to local university. My relatives told my mum that I would not be suitable to be teacher as I did not would not have patience with children and students. Though I did not agree about my patience part but I did not pursue the teaching profession and went on to study private diploma and degree. Never did I expect that I would embark adult training in the corporate world and later on scale up from audience of about 10 persons in the room to 1000 in the townhall. I conducted various soft skills and leadership programs not only in Singapore but across APAC and Global on online platform. TakeawayWe may be so occupied with our roles and responsibilities with regard to our job, family that we forgot about our dreams. I forgot about my childhood dreams till my mentor Genecia asked me what was the childhood dream that I been wanted and that was to do what I love sharing with others around the world. Now this is possible not only limit to offline but also online. Now with this coronovirus, this will be even possible for online. Even my child's tuition has now change to online. When we enjoyed what we do, we will find ways to improve. I joined Toastmasters and setup the club with one of the companies I worked. When we enjoyed what we do and able to monetize it, we do not need to work but enjoy what we are doing and get paid. When we want to do something or embark on a new path or dream, there will be more people pulling us down with all the negative comments just like what my aunty did asking me not to be teacher. However, if we like what we do, go after our dreams. What is the worst can happen? We can start all over again , start afresh and learn from mistakes. I hope that through my sharing, it draws inspiration and personal reflection for you. I believe every woman can be a leader in your own way. I look forward to seeing you in my next episode where I will be sharing with you tips and ways to realize your full potential as a leader on Woman Leadership.
TRANSCRIPT FOR EP 23:Welcome to Woman Leadership show. I'm Janet and in this episode, I will be sharing with you how I keep my sanity as working mum Working in a senior position and leading teams would require a lot of investment of time in addition to night and morning calls. When I was working in the bank, there were periods when I travelled almost 50% of the month for about 2 years to work on various Human Resources projects. I would be away from family at leasy 5 days at one time and had to have facetime at night for few minutes before I would have to prepare my work for next day's meetings or training. Feeling lonely at times when I travelled on business trip and during longer periods the hotel was like my second home. Was there a better option and so I moved to another role which required no travelling for few years while I could focus on my eldest son who are taking PSLE . Youngers ones were moving to upper primary which requires more support in their studies. So being in Singapore did got me time to be there for them though I was working long hours and during weekends. I take things easy such as there are some thing that I do not force myself that they have to score perfect marks. If they did not do well in any subject, I will see if there are resources to support. I do not give myself too much pressure as long we and children do our best. I enjoyed travelling but there would be at stages where I would have to sacrifice to be more grounded with the children when they need me. Now I am taking career break to pause and reflect what is next step for me and for my family now my late mum has just passed away. Do I want to continue my career in corporate or start to look into starting a digital business and flexible options so I can be with my teenager children. I will schedule make it a point to manage my time around family , close friends, health , managing finances and time that I spent will work towards in achieving my goals , to have a consistent time scheduled set aside for family and couple outings. I realized if you do not set aside fixed time regularly, you will be swamped with things that you think are important and take up a lot of your time letting you think misunderstand that you have been very busy which could be good but later on realized it was like firefighting not really sure what we are all busy with at the end of the day, week and months and if those time spent will add value to what we want for ourselves, family , goals, career, business and our dreams. Ilearnt to assess what we do benefit us whether for personal growth, for family, work towards our goals and dreams whether is for work and business. We want our time spent to be productive and eventful as everyone has the same number of 24 hours and what we do with every minute counts and that differentiate us from others looking at what we have achieved in life. I use the same principle in managing my various roles and manage my time in prioritizing what are important for me. Do not feel guilty about not being there for the children, mum or husband. It is a choice made with the support and discussion with husband what works or everyone. Should anyone is not happy, we will trash it out and see if there is any changes needed ot tweak to ensure everyone is well supported. There is no wrong or right decision, it depends on what we want to achieve and what is important to us. What is our values and our priorities may change over time such as how it has changed for me over the years in my career and having different stages of growing up children. I hope that through my sharing, it draws inspiration and personal reflection for you. I believe every woman can be a leader in your own way. I look forward to seeing you in my next episode where I will be sharing with you tips and ways to realize your full potential as a leader on Woman Leadership.

TRANSCRIPT OF EP 2Welcome to Woman Leadership show. I'm Janet and in this episode, I will be talking about my childhood and what I have learnt. What I learnt from my childhood.1) I spent a number of significant years of my childhood helping out at my grandparents provision shop where my aunty family was helping to tend the shop. Since the age of 6, I had to wake up at 6am and opened the shop brought out all the shelves getting ready for customers to purchase groceries. I would go to school after that and upon returning, I would continue to help in washing dishes and laundry before I start doing my homework. I would help in to attend to customers after completed my homework and revision and would only get to sleep at 10am. 2) On weekends and school holidays, I would have to deliver groceries to customers at hawker centers or customers houses, imagine I was only weighing less than 30kg and have to carry 5 – 10kg of rice and groceries. 3) There would be times I made mistakes or mischievous, I would be scolded, beaten or asked to slap myself in front of the customers. I wished that I would grow up quickly so I can get out of the situations I was in. I could not understand why I was treated this way just like a child labour doing all the work but not appreciated and cared for like any other child with parents to protect and care for them. 4) Luckily, I enjoyed school lessons and activities that I joined which kept me occupied and limit my negative thinking. I did not do well in school during lower primary, it could be due to long hours I have to cope at the shop and studies or there was no motivation for me to do well or there was no one to guide me in my studies and homework. I thought I would not be able to do well and progress in upper primary looking at my results and teachers comment was I was talkative in class so not able to focus. Things start to change when I had a new form teacher in upper primary and he had made an impact in my life especially in my school grades. He would check on me every other day if I have any difficulty in my homework and studies and encouraged me to ask questions coupled with more practice if I do not understand or did not do well in the tests. With his guidance and encouragement, I came in top in my class during upper primary and participated in Mathematics competition with his recommendation. It has boosted my confidence and reignite my interest in my studies to do well in PSLE. As a results, I scored A* and 3As. His belief in me has spurred me on to continue to excel in studies and sports. Never give up because you see I never give up though I worked long hours at the shop and have to manage my school hours and school work. I had to endure the hardship with no one to support me emotionally but it has helped me now to be Look for someone who can guide you help be it mentor or coach for example my primary school Mathematics teacher who believed in me and encouraged me to work towards excellence in the subject. Be patient, though I failed P1 – P3 maths but it improved significantly when I was in upper primary. Though I felt stuck working in the shop for long hours on top of school and school work, I waited patiently that I would be able to grow up and be independent. Those experiences have helped me to be more resilient today when I face difficulties, I would be patient when things are not going well and find ways to improve my situation. I hope that through my sharing , it draws inspiration for you. I look forward to seeing you in my next episode where I will be sharing with you tips and ways to realize your full potential as a leader on Woman Leadership.
In Singapore, our lives are somewhat aligned with each other. We go through roughly the same amount of years in school, from PSLE to 'O'/'N' Levels and then tertiary education. Of course to my Singaporean brothers and some sisters, we will all meet in National Service be it SPF, SAF or SCDF. Because of this similar timeline, I believe that the majority of Singaporean Males would have the same thought process. So after NS, some guys plan to work, some plan to study and some want a gap year. But I assume eventually us guys, we would want to settle down but how do we do it? We already have 2 years less working experience and therefore a lot lesser CPF in comparison to our female partners. So here is a little insight into our possible thought process. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's the final episode of our Adulting series and this will be your final chance to attend the Adulting 101 workshop that will be organized by Planners Inc. We hope that we have managed to convince ya'll that learning to 'Adult' early is vital and we just want to ensure that you guys have a headstart! The seats are limited for the workshop on the 9th of November! and this is the last workshop of the year! Do sign up via the link in the bio or register your interest so that Planners Inc may conduct another Workshop! mrbrown and Mr Miyagi have another one of their talk cock sessions, this time at their favourite izakaya in Singapore. Which they will not name. Over good Japanese food and shochu, they discuss where Chop Chop Curry Pok came from, a wine fair that brown went to, post-PSLE school activities, Mr Miyagi's school pool shenanigans, and ECAs (now called CCA) they did when they were in school. #themrbrownshowonanchor
