In this episode, I sit down with Raelene Castle, a trailblazer in sports management as the first female CEO of Netball New Zealand and now the CEO of Sport New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand. We discuss her trajectory in the corporate and sporting worlds, her upbringing in a sport-centric family, and the importance for her of finding confidence through activity. Raelene shares her insights on the challenges women in leadership face - including the (elusive) balance of personal and professional life. She is not afraid to talk about the losses and well as the wins - as we delve into managing alopecia in a public role, responding to life not going to plan, and the profound significance of family connections. Our conversation touches upon mentorship, reverse-mentorship, inclusivity, and explores how young people can assert their voices and ambitions in today's world. Raelene is nothing short of inspiring, and I truly loved talking with her. Why Self-Discipline Can't Fix All Our Weight Loss Woes – In Session with Marc David

Psychology of Eating

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 24, 2024 49:43

Raelene, 46, would love to lose about 40 kilos. And she's had great success in the past: all she has to do is eliminate sugar, cut down on the carbs, watch her calories and portion sizing, and the weight will eventually come off.  But the problem is, she just can't seem to stick to a diet plan for more than a few months.   A cooking teacher and mother of two, Raelene says she simply doesn't have the discipline to stick with it. And after 15 years of off-and-on-again dieting, Raelene still hasn't reached the promised land – and like so many of us, is pretty frustrated and confused about what to do.  This is clearly a conundrum.  She knows what she needs to do, but she just doesn't have the discipline to do it.  In this episode, Marc David helps Raelene realize something important:  Diagnosing the cause of her weight challenges as a lack of self-discipline is misplaced. And we know that to be true, in part, because her many years of trying to simply muster more discipline hasn't been working. Discipline by itself will never solve her weight loss problem.  The reality is, Raelene hasn't been in the right conversation with herself, all because of an incorrect assessment she made about herself many years ago.  As you'll hear in this episode, Marc helps Raelene refocus on the true heart of the matter:  ⇒ Understanding what's truly driving her relationship with food (her eating psychology), and changing her core beliefs about food, weight, self-worth, and lovability.   So many of us focus on our weight from a place of judgment. But we deserve so much more than that. When we can bravely learn to step away from our harsh inner critic, and instead evoke compassion towards ourselves, we can discover what's really behind our patterns with weight.   For Raelene, part of that is understanding the impact of what she learned in childhood about weight loss: she was a “good” girl only if she was slender. Fat girls would never be loved and accepted.   It's no wonder that food became a source of anxiety, and the simple act of eating took on so much stress and pressure. If being overweight means being unlovable, then everything she eats must be just right, and her appetite must be in absolute control so she can finally receive love.  But the reality is, Raelene knows deep down inside that this is a battle she can never truly win. So a part of her rebels against dieting because her dieting is being driven from a place of low self worth. Eating to prove one's self worth is unnatural, and it goes against our humanity and our dignity.  Marc helps Raelene see the beautiful truth that she is unconditionally loved by her kids, her husband, and the people who care about her the most. There is no one in her life who needs her to lose weight so she can be more lovable. Except for herself.   And it's time to give herself some love when it comes to her body and her weight.  Episode highlights:  Eating psychology tools to help change unhelpful beliefs about food and body How to take the pressure off of weight loss, while also setting ourselves up for weight loss success How to shift out of dieting mentality Discovering who you are as an eater, and why that matters when it comes to weight How to quiet the unwanted inner conversation around food And more…  ---------------  Learn more about us at The Institute for the Psychology of Eating: https://psychologyofeating.com/   Ready to call a ceasefire in your battle with eating, and find peace and freedom with food? Blue & Raelene Elam had 6 kids within 7 years. They were in a tight spot financially but grew up believing that wealth could only come from an inheritance or completing a postgraduate degree. So, once they found out about network marketing, they spent a lot of time researching opportunities where the products and compensation plan provided what they were looking for. That's when they found LifeVantage–it checked all the boxes. Their family's support made it possible to jump into LifeVantage headfirst. They know that everyone who joins the company brings different skills and education to the table, and the industry allows everyone to build on what they already know. Blue, Raelene, and their 2 oldest daughters were in a major car accident that eventually left Raelene with both of her legs amputated. The security LifeVantage provided eased a major burden during this difficult time. Blue and Raelene share that if you keep digging in and believe in the company, you'll set yourself up for success. Blue Elam grew up on a ranch. After high school, he served a 2-year mission for his church and worked as a foreman. Both experiences gave him a passion for helping people realize their true potential. He completed a fire science degree in hopes of following in the footsteps of several uncles and cousins by joining the Tucson Fire Department. While at school, Blue met Raelene, who was playing volleyball on a scholarship at the University of Arizona. They dated for 5 months before getting married and have now been married for almost 25 years. Blue made the Tucson Fire Department, where he continued to help those in need. In 2008, Blue and Raelene discovered network marketing. They instantly fell in love with the idea of serving others while developing their own leveraged income. They are now LifeVantage Executive Master Pro 10s. Their successful business allows many others to spend their time where it matters most. Blue retired from the fire department 12 years ago.  Blue, Raelene, and their family reside in St. George, UT. They enjoy outdoor sports, hunting, fishing, and camping with their 6 children. They continue to pave the path to success and develop leaders around the world.   * These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Maryrose Cuskelly is an award winning writer or fiction and nonfiction. Her debut novel is The Cane. The Cane transports the reader to the Northern Queensland canefields and back in time to the 1970's.The town of Quala is reeling from the disappearance of sixteen year old Janet McClymont. In the weeks since Janet failed to arrive at her babysitting job the canefields have been repeatedly swept by search parties and every man is the district has been grilled over his whereabouts at the time of her disappearance.Told through a multitude of perspectives, The Cane delves into the psychology of a town on the brink. The questions of whether Janet is alive is almost secondary to the rarely spoken, ‘could have been one of us?'This is a society that views outsiders with suspicion. The new school teacher is too tall, too long haired and too free in his advocacy of social change. His alibi must be rechecked and still not believed. The new publican's daughter is old for primary school and too open in her ways with the boys. Raelene flaunts the unspoken rules that have turned the town in on itself. She freely walks alone and refuses to defer to parental authority. The new copper brought in from Brisbane is just too much because she's a woman and Quala's men have their own ideas about the roles women should occupy. With the harvest being held off in the hopes that Janet might be found before the cane burn the stage is set for tensions to run high. If the cops can't do anything about the malignant force that seems to have invaded Quala the locals might just have to sort it out themselves. The Cane has all the elements of a seat of your pants beach read, purpose built to give you aching arms and sunburn as you lay too long turning page after page. As it builds inexorably towards the moment the canefields are set alight the book shows us how social unrest brews in a town turned against itself. The various narratorial perspectives glimpse at the ways this highly conservative social milieu is fighting against itself and the forces of change. Women in particular are given the spotlight as agents of change and targets of those who would maintain the status quo.The narrative is based on a true story and it is not simply in this historical alignment that we can find resonance with The Cane's exploration of social expectation and control. It was interesting to read back fifty years in the wake of the current news cycle. While the sexism and misogyny of many of The Cane's men is more bald than we might be used to today, there is undoubtedly a through line from older attitudes towards women working, reading and expressing themselves openly, and attitudes in certain sections of the media about ‘proper' behaviour from prominent women.By giving us perspectives from characters as diverse as children, established and recent arrivals we are privy to a world that is seeking a united front but is torn by feelings that something is not right. As I entered the world of The Cane I fell into the trap of trying to solve the mystery alongside the characters. This is not a traditional ‘fair play' style whodunnit although it offers a compelling psychological search. As a reader you are given enough of a glimpse into the ensemble cast of characters to wonder at who might be the perpetrator, and perhaps just as importantly, how that person may go unseen within a close knit community.Check out The Cane. It's an exciting read with its soul in the heart of contemporary questions about how we treat and respond to violence against women.Book Club is produced and presented by Andrew PopleWant more great conversations with Australian authors?Discover this and many more conversations on Final Draft every week from 2ser.

The Understanding Boys Podcast

Raelene Plozza is an Instructional Coach and Head of Literacy at Brighton Grammar School, where she also teaches a very motivated Year 8 English class. Raelene trained as a Primary teacher and later completed a Masters in Literacy, with her research focused on motivating adolescent boys to read. Her teaching background is diverse, and she considers one of her greatest achievements to be even more passionate about her career choice today as she was when she began teaching in 1989. For the past 15 years, Raelene has been a teacher of boys. Her expertise in Literacy, and her natural curiosity about how we might maximise literacy outcomes for our boys, drives her to keep working in the field. She doesn't have all the answers, but she strongly suspects that reading is the answer to most of her questions.
