Cameron was fun-loving, intelligent, compassionate, athletic, and talented who made his mom, Denise, very proud. After taking a counterfeit pill, he overdosed and lost his life when he was 23, even though his friends administered Narcan. Denise is on a mission to tell others that Narcan alone is not enough—911 must also be called. She reached out to Scott Silverman, a crisis coach, family navigator, and CEO of Confidential Recovery, an outpatient addiction program in San Diego, California. Ken welcomes Mark Bodnarzcuk back to the podcast. As he shared with Ken in March of this year, the fentanyl crisis in our country is real - and made an unwelcome visit to his home. Thomas, Mark's then 17-year-old son, took a pill he bought on the Internet that he believed was Xanax. He died a short time after swallowing the tablet. The autopsy showed that it was fentanyl - a deadly dose in a single pill. It's the subject of his new book (to be released October 15) - Finding New Life After the Death of My Son: Grace and Forgiveness in the Age of Counterfeit Pills and Fentanyl Poisoning. Mark shares his faith journey, and the impact of this unthinkable tragedy on his understanding of God, the Bible, science, and his years of therapy. A graduate of a Christian school (Wheaton College), his career has taken him to Stanford University and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, which is currently building the largest digital camera for space exploration ever made. Mark's keen interest in science, from the atom to the cosmos has also been influenced by the work of famed psychologist Carl Jung. Mark shares how psychology and science have shaped his faith, his love for the Bible, and his capacity to forgive. It's a very personal story that takes us from the courtroom to the mountains of Colorado to the labyrinth - both inner and outer. Ken and Mark talk about significant authors including C.S. Lewis, Tim Keller, John Ortburg, and Philip Yancey (who write the Foreword to Mark's book). However, with a record surge in fentanyl-related fatalities in the United States, attitudes are evolving. The alarming rise in deaths has intensified pressure on narcotics investigators nationwide, from the DEA to local police forces, to pursue justice for grieving families. Unfortunately, seeking justice for these tragedies is often slow and uncertain. In this episode of Grieving Out Loud, meet Matt Capelouto, a grieving father who is advocating for legislative changes to ensure that those who knowingly sell deadly drugs are held accountable with prison sentences. Grieving Out Loud: A Mother Coping with Loss in the Opioid Epidemic
At first glance, Kate Kerr seemed to have it all—a beautiful apartment, impeccable fashion sense, and was a nurturing mother who ensured her children were well cared for. However, behind this seemingly perfect exterior, a secret lay hidden, unknown even to her closest loved ones. Kate struggled with substance use disorder after a doctor prescribed her painkillers to recover from surgery. Unfortunately, that struggle took a deadly turn that her mother is still trying to piece together. In this emotional episode of "Grieving Out Loud," host Angela Kennecke sits down with Kate's mother, Deborah Zwicker, as she shares her perspective on her daughter's descent into addiction. Deborah opens up about the shock she experienced, as Kate's appearance and responsibilities seemed to mask her hidden struggle. With relentless determination, Deborah seeks justice for her daughter's tragedy and takes active steps toward preventing future tragedies caused by addiction. She wishes the person with her daughter when she overdosed would have immediately called 911 and taken advantage of the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act. I founded APALD-Association of People Against Lethal Drugs as a result of losing my son Jordan Garmatter to Illicit Fentanyl on 4/6/19. My son suffered from Substance Use Disorder. He was drug free for 8 months when he developed a wisdom tooth growing in the wrong way. His face was swollen and in pain. He worked part time and only had Medicaid insurance so he couldn't get in to a dentist for two weeks out. Jordan continued to work with this extreme pain but with one week left to see the dentist he made the mistake to go get Drugs to relieve his pain. But what he got was almost 100% Fentanyl. Enough to kill 8 people in his system. My son didn't ask for Fentanyl. The drug dealer made that choice to give him that and didn't tell him it was Fentanyl. So when I got the toxicology report and found out it was Fentanyl that killed him I got very angry as I looked it up and discovered it came from China then to Mexico and across our borders. So I thought to myself, I have to do something! So I founded APALD. Since founding APALD we have had two national rallies. We are getting set for our 3rd Annual APALD Nationwide Rallies on May 6th. Our message is to bring awareness to Illicit Fentanyl which is the leading cause of death in America ages 18-45. These Fentanyl Poisonings must stop. We are losing a whole generation to this Lethal drug. Lori and Dean join the show to discuss their son's life and legacy. They are the founders of djswish.org This is a topic that is quite common in today's society. We welcome these parents to discuss this topic so others are aware of what is happening and offer some solutions. Thank you for listening. From their website: On July 16, 2021, our lives took a drastic turn. That was the day we lost our only child to illicit fentanyl poisoning. Life wasn't perfect before that day, but we were happy and hoped that DJ would find a way to beat the demons that dragged him back into active SUD time after time. God had a plan for DJ and Dean and me. It wasn't the plan we prayed for and dreamt of. We had a choice to make, live in our sorrow or find a way to keep DJ's memory alive and help others. Like many families we watched our son change before our eyes. The real DJ was there at times, but SUD is a wicked disease without an easy remedy. Dean and I felt so very isolated. Few in our circle of family and friends were familiar with SUD. The stigma that surrounds it leads you to believe that you must hide the truth. It tells you that your loved one is weak and if they were just more determined they could beat it. The stigma tells you that you have failed. The stigma is WRONG. We quickly found there are hundreds of thousands of families like ours that don't know what to do or where to turn. We helped DJ get into recovery programs and while there we had hope for a bright future. Our son was back, he was healthy and working hard to free himself of the disease. He completed the programs and came home to re-build his life but found so many roadblocks that none of us were prepared to get around. The disease was active again and we helplessly watched the changes in our son once again. We did all the things traditional “therapy” suggests… set hard boundaries, cut him off, brought him home and so much more. We took him to detox centers and were turned away. For us the traditional efforts were not working. Finally in the summer of 2021 we tried once more to bring DJ home and set strong boundaries in place and thought we were helping him make good decisions. He found a job he enjoyed, stayed away from the people and places that triggered his addiction and we thought we were on the right path. It wasn't perfect, but we had time – or so we thought. That day in July seemed so normal. We had no idea what the morning would bring. Losing our son forced us to decide how life would look without him. The first few days and weeks nearly destroyed us both. The grief was suffocating. The anger was fierce. A giant hole made breathing a task. Something had to be done. We had to make a stand and we had to give our son a voice again. He told a friend that if he didn't survive, he hoped others would be saved because of his death. In October, DJ's Wish-Freedom From Fentanyl was launched as a Facebook page to help us spread information and news on the illicit fentanyl crisis our country is facing. While we are still a small group our reach grows daily. We are giving a voice to many, and God has provided many opportunities that we didn't dream were possible. DJ's Wish strives to be a resource for those who feel isolated. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/recoverynuggetspodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/recoverynuggetspodcast/support

Fentanyl is the number one drug causing overdose deaths in the United States. The problem is they aren't all from overdose. Two milligrams (mg) of fentanyl can be lethal depending on a person's body size, tolerance and past usage. 42% of pills tested for fentanyl contained at least 2 mg of fentanyl, considered a potentially lethal dose. Meaning that you can die from fentanyl the first time you consume it. These are not overdose deaths, this is mass fentanyl poisoning that is plaguing rural, urban, and suburban communities throughout the United States. Episode 13 of the podcast brings back Derek Maltz, a retired special agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) who rose the ranks to become the director of the Special Operations Division (SOD), spending his entire career fighting against major drug cartels, international terrorists and arms traffickers, and saving American lives. A 28-year career that involves some of the most high-profile arrests in the history of law enforcement, to include the infamous Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout, or the international arms trafficker, Monzer al-Kassar, to the narco-nephews of the wife of Venezuelan regime leader, Nicolás Maduro and his Cartel of the Suns. In this episode we discuss how Mexican cartels are working with Chinese transnational criminal organizations to distribute fentanyl by the kilogram across the U.S. southern border. One kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill half a million people. Fentanyl poisoning, drug overdose, and mental health are growing problems in the United States with each year more and more youth being victims of these social issues. In this podcast, we talk to the founders of the Michael Leonardi foundation and the parents of Michael Leonardi who lost his life to fentanyl poisoning in 2020. Please help support their cause and help raise awareness of this matter. BIO: Mona Leonardi is the co-founder of the Michael Leonardi Foundation, a bay area non-profit organization dedicated to raising illicit fentanyl awareness in communities across the north bay area. After losing her son, Michael on February 24, 2020, at the age of 20 to fentanyl poisoning, she started the foundation, along with Michael's father and sister, to be Michael's voice and the voice of those lost to fentanyl poisoning. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin, is taking the lives of young Americans at an alarming rate at the hands of drug trafficking organizations and dealers. The number one cause of death in the U.S. for ages 18-45 is fentanyl. Mark graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology and is originally from Long Island NY. He started a career in the hospitality industry working for iconic hotel companies such as the Four Seasons, the historic Shoreham Hotel in Washington DC, the world-famous Hotel del Coronado, and the Claremont Resort and Spa before starting his own company planning large-scale corporate events nationwide. Currently, Mark is the general manager of a tour company with offices in Napa and Sonoma Valleys while he is not working on the Michael Leonardi Foundation. His daughter Julia is a student at UCSB, and he also has a three-year-old son, Samual, who keeps him busy but very happy. He also thinks about and misses his son Michael daily. Mark's goals are to help spread the word about the dangers of fentanyl poisoning and help keep our children safe.
