Catalan folk duo Tarta Relena's vocal-based music limns centuries and borders, ranges from the sacred to the secular, and often uses electronics. Their body of work so far reimagines Mediterranean folk, Georgian laments, and the 12th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen. Then, there's their setting of verse from Afghan Pashto women singing about “controversial subjects such as envy, broken hearts, hatred or lust”, and adapted sacred music (they met as members of a religious music choir), (Songlines, 2022). Singing in Catalan, Spanish, Greek, Latin, English and Ladino, they treat each language as a tool, a color to bring up an emotion. Tarta Relena's arrangements and performances traffic in the intense spirituality and human connection of the music, which lands with joy and poignancy, enhanced by dramatic use of electronics: percussion, drone, some bass synth, and vocal effects. For this edition of the Soundcheck Podcast, Tarta Relena sings a cappella, just like they started the duo back in 2016. Treize versus Wu Fei! Quatre versus Dorothy! It's the back-to-back brawls that this series has been building to all along, apparently! Meanwhile, Duo smuggles the Weirdos to the location of their heroic atonement, and Heero finally, at long last, tries a little tenderness with Relena before speeding off for the ultimate(?) showdown with Zechs. Will a new world emerge from the ashes of all this conflict and monologuing? Is “Takeoff into Confusion” RAD… or is it BAD?

The consolidated forces of Earth finally quit with the bawlin' and make with the brawlin'! With Hilde's stolen data disk in hand and Hilde presumably in a coma somewhere, Heero jacks a White Fang carrier and attempts to rescue Relena from captivity while pretending he totally doesn't care that she is in captivity. Milliardo decides to reject Treize's offer to settle this whole thing with a duel and instead invites Treize to duel the business end of Libra's gigantic beam cannon. Treize is saved in a timely fashion by a highly unlikely figure from his not-too-distant past. Can justice move as quickly as Lady Une coming off an extended hospital stay? Is “Milliardo's Decision” RAD… or is it BAD?

Relena goes forth to talk some sense into her brother but ends up getting tossed forth into a locked room while Zechs unleashes a dangerous and unpredictable new weapon: the terrifying mind of Dorothy Catalonia! Quatre hooks up to the Zero System because nothing bad happened the last time he did that. Sally Po saves basically every protagonist, but will anyone say “Thank you?” Is “Go Forth, Gundam Team” RAD… or is it BAD?

Lady Une returns, significantly less dead than was expected but significantly more comatose than one would hope. Treize explains to her that he only took over for Relena because the Blessed Burrito Queen was unprepared to do gangster stuff. Wufei plugs his brain into the Zero system and it tells him to rejoin the main plot. Relena's Frontier Airlines flight to space might have many stops, but there's no stopping space justice! Is “Battleship Libra” RAD… or is it BAD?

Gundam Wing's star-crossed lovers and occasional jam bros are reunited by fate and a circus! Can the purity of their love rescue Trowa from his amnesia? No. Can the opportunity to suit up and do some more killin' rescue Trowa from his amnesia? Oh, absolutely! The war against White Fang rages on for some reason. Newly crowned Queen Relena casually obliterates the concept of national sovereignty, but she can't obliterate the quest for an answer: Is “The Birth of Queen Relena” RAD... or is it BAD?

2021 is about to leave us like Heero leaving the Sanc Kingdom the minute Relena takes her eyes off him, but before we go, your hosts are here to talk religion, make fun of Treize, and talk disastrous hookups—and we'll never be out of disastrous hookups! We're finally introduced to the dark and edgy outer senshi Gundam Epyon, which Treize has lovingly stashed away in a dark creepy mansion complete with his secret shrine dedicated to Heero Yuy figurines and photographs. Just kidding! He doesn't have a shrine! But he does have a lot of Feelings about Heero Yuy which he can't wait to share with us in a very long monologue, so long that we rise up like Nietzsche to declare that God--I mean Treize--is dead and Heero climbs into a deathtrap mobile suit just to get him to shut up. We conclude our journey through the animated After Colony timeline with a review of Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz!  One year after the TV series, some guy we've never heard of named Dekim Barton comes out of nowhere hell-bent on ruining Christmas with his army of bellhops, squad of boy scouts, and a legion of Diet-Coke Heavyarms.  Shockingly, the Preventers fail to prevent Barton's machinations after the world disarms and the Gundam boys send their Gundams into the sun (except Wu-Fei who kept Gundam Naruto).  Can the boys get their Gundams back in time to stop Barton and save Christmas?  Join us aboard Dorothy's bus line and watch Relena hit Mariemaia Khushrenada (allegedly) with some cold, hard total pacifism!   Merry Christmas Eve, listeners!

Zechs and Heero meet again amid the ruins of the Sanc Kingdom. With their homicidal suits at the helm and no bad guys around to fight, they do the only logical thing: Fight each other! With a PR victory in hand, a surprisingly effective Duke Dermail tempts Relena with power and a brand new title. Tsuborov and a bunch of random colonists become casualties of Wu Fei's quest to define integrity, and yet another ragtag band of space revolutionaries appears on the board. Oh great! Another faction with dubious intent! Just what this story needed! Is “Zero vs. Epyon” RAD... or is it BAD?

Quatre reunites with Sandrock and the Maguanac Corps. Duo reunites with Trowa (sort of). Relena reunites with her ideals. Dorothy and Crazy don't have to reunite because they've never been apart. Will Relena's long flight from smitten schoolgirl to sainted champion land with a cheer or an underwhelmed sigh? Is “Sanc Kingdom's Collapse” RAD… or is it BAD?

We conclude our review of the Gundam Wing TV series with another triple-sized episode!  Relena lets Dorothy into the Sanc Kindom despite those evil eyebrows; Romefeller sticks to its strength of holding daily meetings; Treize creates Epyon only to give it away because he wants to win by losing with Space Leos; Zechs takes control of White Fang because he looks more qualified than the guy in the vest; Quinze and the Engineers explain the plot in a few lines near the end hoping you don't notice; and the Gundam boys finally come together in the end. In hindsight, the whole conflict could have been solved with just communication... Plus, we both share recent real life encounters with Gundam Wing proving that we can never escape this series' legacy!

The plot thickens! Relena puts herself in danger, someone who isn't Relena puts themselves in danger, and Relena once again puts herself in danger! Nearly a hat trick... Like divine fury in a delightful red flight suit, Zechs Merquise returns to the story just in time to trash Tsubarov's day! Relena accepts an invitation to do diplomacy at the Evil Old Boys Club and takes along her most trusted and obviously dangerous psychopath as an escort. Pagan Eight-Guns wraps his car around a tree, but can the Secret Court wrap justice around this episode? Is “The Lonely Battlefield” RAD… or is it BAD?

We're still at Relena's School for Girls (and Two Boys!) Who Want to Craft Peace, except one girl came out here to have a good time and her idea of a good time is attacking and getting attacked. Dorothy doesn't have time for your thoughts on gender essentialism and pacifism or the battle between Bad Oz and Treize Oz. She's just here to stab Heero in a fencing duel and drive Relena straight into the middle of a mobile suit battle! Honestly, big mood. And speaking of moods, we delve deep into every one of the many vibes Duo is putting out in episode 32, from "the only pilot in a healthy heterosexual relationship with someone who is not his sister" to "divorced dad in the streets, sexy goth Gundam in the sheets" to killing Trant Clark for being too online. One day Mike Flanagan will take all of the Zero System episodes from this series and turn them into a limited-run Netflix horror show, where the Zero System is a symbol for capitalism (probably) and Duo will finally be the Hot Priest Character we all knew he could be. But for the time being, you'll just have to stick with us as we pour over this week's artifact: the manga prequel Episode Zero, which explains why you keep hearing about the Maxwell Church, Meiran, and Midi Une.

Bored Heero goes merc for the Treize Faction. Quatre goes Waltzin' Matilda to make friends with Father Dowling and a village full of stoic farmer-philosophers. Fights break out, both literal and rhetorical, and it's all just prelude to an awkward and long-awaited reunion on an airport tarmac. Is “Reunion with Relena” RAD… or is it BAD?

A golden Lincoln Towncar full of crazy rolls into Relena's life, threatening her peace initiative and her top spot as chief deliverer of unsettling line reads. Heero and Quatre crash-land back in The Sovereign Republic of East Texas without much of a plan beyond playing with dogs and getting captured. Noin springs Sally Po from the clutches of OZ, and they briefly become the baddest duo in the Earth Sphere. Dorothy wants everyone to hurry up and start a war, but the Secret Court wants to hurry up and answer one question: Is “The Heroine of the Battlefield” RAD… or is it BAD?

The Secret Court returns, whiskey in hand, to procedurally tackle the dreaded two-part recap episode! Relena talks to a picture frame and reminisces about the sweet boy who threatened to kill her. Treize takes a carriage ride and drafts his next Medium post while on house arrest. Does any of this clarify the plot thus far? Um, kind of? They aren't really RAD and they aren't BAD, but “The Locus of Victory and Defeat” and “Passing Destinies” must be entered into the record!

Close your eyes. Imagine a beach. The sand between your toes. The sound of waves. Your eyes are shrouded in unexpectedly detailed eyelashes. Your friend sits beside you. The setting sun brings a new vibrancy to his platinum blonde hair. Two dogs run up to you. You throw a pineapple for them. You are at peace. Your name is Heero Yuy and your animation budget has just been replenished. Okay, enough of that: we have some questions. First of all, where is this beach jungle of Europe? Is total pacifism possible or is it merely schoolgirl naïveté? Why do people love war? Do freaky pointed eyebrows correlate with loving war? What other eyebrow shapes indicate political positions? Can dogs even eat pineapple? A little pineapple as a treat? We carefully research (read: totally make up) answers to these questions and more at the fancy shoujo manga rich girl school where Relena is a student, a teacher, the principal, the school board, the student council president, and the actual president of the whole country. How does she have time to do all that when she has an evil new girlfriend with a car? For our fandom artifact, Kat and Mallory played 1996 Super Nintendo game Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Duel, a game about beating dudes.

In Gundam Wing's most realistic episode to date, Relena cops some boss duds and infiltrates a gathering of rich, inbred oligarchs who have been orchestrating wars in order to cement their own wealth and power! It's practically a documentary! Meanwhile, Zechs does sneaky stuff at the office! Heero continues to generously offer Field Marshall Noventa's family the opportunity to shoot him, but they'd rather have answers to the Earth Sphere's most salient question: Is “The Order to Destroy 01” RAD… or is it BAD?

Zechs returns home with Tallgeese, a wildly powerful proto-gundam with a troubling record of injuring its pilots! Duo returns to the hard court with Heero, a wildly dunktastic power forward with a troubling history of killing the occasional classmate! But even mopey Wu Fei and stalkin’-ass Relena can’t deter the court from diving headlong into judicial truth. Is “Portrait of a Ruined Country” RAD... or is it BAD?

The mysterious truth behind Relena’s whole weird deal is 34% revealed, costing her a father but gaining her a creepy old guy and a ride to the airport. Heero has a new mission. Duo has a new bro. Screw on your unsettling cyborg parts and prepare to ride the info dump! The armor-plated fancy lads are back in gear, and so is this mission of cosmic critique! Is “Relena’s Secret” RAD... or is it BAD?

The final stop in our apology roadtrip is Antarctica, where Zechs has planned a mobile suit battle that will ultimately end up merging Heero with Gundam Heavyarms and triggering the Second Impact. Wait, sorry, wrong series! We give props to Trowa for his emotional labor, Treize doesn't actively kill a metaphorical baby but it's a close shave, and Relena commits a federal mail crime-- but it's all in service of creating a better future for Heero. And while GW's lasting legacy should be how the Antarctica duel actually gives us characterization through piloting styles, it probably remains most well-known for its outrageous promo art, which is this episode's fandom artifact. In Episodes 13 and 14 of Gundam Wing, it's all eyes on Trowa in the center of the ring just like a circus he's about to blow up. Baby, he's a put-on-a-show kind of girl, so he's going to do some terrorism and self-destruct. Luckily, Catherine punches him in the face, as all of us wish to do to all Gundam pilots. Sunrise wastes some great goggle-wearing designs on one-off characters who exist only to allow Zechs to claim ethical superiority. The podcasters wonder if all anime is fascist—wow, @ past us, that's a little extreme, let's calm down. But we toss aside our serious analysis of politics to get to what's really important: World Apology Tour Featuring Heero and Trowa. They spent all that time alone on the road together—what did they do—did they accidentally brush hands—did they keep glancing at each other but missing when the other one looks back—we become feverish with possibilities. Heero apologizes to a Relena clone while Relena herself gets a fashion upgrade and yells at some old men. Just because you can't travel in the pandemic doesn't mean you can't visit ARAB WORLD and CHINA WORLD with Cathy, Caitlin, Kat, Mallory, and the cast of Gundam Wing! We had too much fun last episode talking about shipping and sex, so naturally this episode is absolutely no fun at all as we delve into colonialism and nationalism as it applies to Sichu—sorry, the Autonomous Mountain Region of China, whether shipping Wufei and Sally is weird psychosexual incest, Trowa's teenage terrorist trauma, and just how incredibly hot Noin is when she pulls up in a motorcycle to save Relena from dying while in her best Revolutionary Girl Utena cosplay. Whoops, I guess that part about having no fun at all was a lie. This episode's fandom artifact is the state of fan internet and webrings circa early 2000s, including the Society for the Defense of Duo's Intelligence.

Warren tries to reform his ways and fails. Brendan responds cautiously to a deep question. In this episode Relena gets mad air off a quarter pipe but her joy is short-lived. A mysterious old man wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sandals slouches towards Duo. Another older, creepier man gets pinchy with Relena. Don’t worry - we’re here with you for all of it, including the death of a significant character! And while Lady Une makes a big splash in her debut, her spotlight is stolen by the return of Relena’s friends! What’s all the commotion? With transparent fencing masks, equestrian computer hacking and pink limousines - Humans seem to have finally got things figured out. But this futuristic world is far from perfect: The carrier is not equipped for mobile suits. Relena has never been so happy and delighted to hear about an ambulance. We learn about beasts and that Gundams have the ability to lounge. While Heero pays homage to Dr Strangelove, he is painfully unaware of the concept of bullet-time. It’s pretty obvious to anyone what the impact tolerance of Gundanium is.
