Marking one of the shortest presidencies in American history, James A. Garfield died less than seven months after inauguration due to a bullet wound sustained during an attempted assassination. A Civil War hero born into abject poverty, President Garfield's attempted assassination set off a bitter struggle for power in the American government—even extending to contention surrounding the medical care used to treat his wound. Candice Millard, in conversation with David M. Rubenstein, offers an extraordinary account of Garfield's momentous, if brief, presidential career and the legacy left not only by his work but by his death. Recorded on April 11, 2023

On July 2nd, 1881, a disappointed and mentally unstable office-seeker named Charles Guiteau shot President James A. Garfield in a Washington D.C. train station. Over the next weeks, Garfield would linger, bedridden, as infection set in, caused by poor medical treatment, and America would wait with bated breath over whether their beloved president would survive. Meanwhile, Guiteau, the most hated man in America, would face trial and possible execution. My guest is Candice Millard, New York Times bestselling author, who discusses her book Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President. September 26, 2016 - This week, our time machine spins us back to Boer War in the twilight of the 19th Century, when the republics that preceded today's South Africa fought the British Empire over gold and diamonds. While there, we'll see a familiar face from World War Two forty years later. The name Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill invokes the balding, cigar-chomping, British bulldog who stared down Hitler across the English Channel. So it's easy to forget that he was a soldier once, and young. Distinguished author Candice Millard introduces us to this Churchill as he puts his foot on the first rung of the ladder to greatness in Hero of the Empire: The Boer War, a Daring Escape, and the Making of Winston Churchill. Her previous books are best-sellers The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey, and Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President, covering the man the President James A. Garfield National Historic Site described in our very first episode as, "The greatest president we never had." Visit CandiceMillard.com and follow this week's guest @Candice_Millard on Twitter. If you're fascinated by Churchill, catch our interview with Jonathan Sandys, Churchill's great-grandson and the host of Churchill Chat. His book is God & Churchill: How the Great Leader's Sense of Divine Destiny Changed His Troubled World and Offers Hope for Ours. Between 1837 and 1904, rumors spread of a strange bounding devil who haunted southern England, breathing blue flames and menacing his victims with steel talons. In this episode of the Futility Closet podcast we review the career of Spring-Heeled Jack and speculate about his origins. We also recount Alexander Graham Bell's efforts to help the wounded James Garfield before his doctors' treatments could kill him and puzzle over why a police manual gives instructions in a language that none of the officers speak.
