A few weeks back, I was delivering a Fanatical Prospecting Bootcamp to a group of sales reps - all in their 20s.  They had been assigned to me because their boss was tired of listening to their excuses about why they weren't consistently picking up the phone and prospecting.  When he brought me in, he said matter of factly: “They won't pay any attention to me, but before I start firing people, I'm hoping you can get through to them.” The reps didn't want to be there. It was a hostile audience from the start.  Just as I kicked off the training, one of the reps challenged me with, “Your book Fanatical Prospecting was written a long time ago. Is it even relevant anymore?” His sneering words were more of a statement than a question.  Cold Calling is Old School Distraction Like many reluctant prospectors, he wanted to engage in a distracting argument over whether or not outbound telephone prospecting (a.k.a cold calling) was old school. He wanted validation that his avoidance of prospecting was OK, and to make the point that marketing should be responsible for delivering hot, ready-to-buy leads on a silver platter. Sales reps of all generations -- for at least the past 125 years -- have been eager to make any excuse -- and I mean any excuse -- to avoid picking up a phone or knocking on a door. The most common excuse always has been that synchronous prospecting (a.k.a talking with people) is old school.  There were a couple of snickers from the back of the room in anticipation for what I would do next. But I'd been to this rodeo many times before.   “What do you think has changed since I wrote the book?” I asked calmly.  The young rep shot back condescendingly. “Well, for one thing, nobody answers the phone anymore.” So I challenged him right back. “Ok, let's test your hypothesis. Let me see the prospecting list that you brought with you.” (We run live call blocks in our Fanatical Prospecting Boot Camps and require participants to bring a list with them to class.)  Cold Calling Reality Bites I waited patiently as he pulled the list up on his laptop. Then, I began dialing his prospects, right in front of the class. Instantly I had their attention. They all leaned in to watch. Reality TV is a hell of a magnet.  I made 11 dials to his list, spoke to two decision makers and set one appointment—all within a span of about 15 minutes. As I handed him back his laptop, I turned to the group and asked, “Any more questions?”  Elvis Presley said, “The truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away.” The reason telephone prospecting wasn't working for the petulant sales rep who challenged me was that he wasn't doing it.  The cold truth about cold calling is that nobody answers a phone that doesn't ring.  Sales Success is Paid for In Advance with Prospecting What was true when I wrote Fanatical Prospecting is still true today:  If you wait for people to come to you, you'll starve to death.  If you think your marketing team is going to supply you with an endless stream of qualified, ready-to-buy prospects, then you are delusional.  Here's another truth for you: When it comes to prospecting, you cannot be delusional and have a full pipeline at the same time.   There are certainly sales jobs where your phone rings and inbound chat dings with people who are ready to buy. If you absolutely cannot stand interrupting people through outbound prospecting, but you like selling, perhaps one these roles are for you.  However, if you take a sales job where you never have to make a cold call, be prepared for a paycut.* Sales reps in these types of roles typically get paid by the hour with minimum commission upside. *[Also be aware that some people, including Victor Antonio, are projecting that many of these jobs will be taken over by AI in the future.] Cold Calling is a Prized Meta-Skill in Today's Noisy Marketplace The most coveted,

I am a great fan of Victor Antonio, who writes books, gives lectures and training on sales.  I listen to his Sales Influence Podcast and he has a lot of solid, credible advice. In a recent episode he spoke about not using “weasel words” in sales and being more directive and certain with the buyer.  Weasel words are defined as “words or statements that are intentionally ambiguous or misleading” and in sales would include words such as  “perhaps”, “maybe”, “could”, etc.  I was thinking about how this would apply in Japan. The culture here of modesty, humility, not standing out, not being openingly directive is the exact opposite of the culture in the USA, where you have to be more aggressive.  As a consequence, if I started being more assertive with my buyers, I believe they would dismiss what I was saying as American style push selling and reject both me and my solutions. I have lived here for 40 years in total now, so over those three sojourns, I have adapted my Aussie self to fit in with the way things work here.  In sales, when I first started trying to convince buyers to buy, I was using consultative selling methodologies.  That meant asking questions to understand the buyer needs.  However, I am sure when I got to the solution explanation part, I was being very strong and forthright in my recommendation that they buy what I was offering. Having sold here for many years now, I have changed that method to be less strident in my recommendations and I do use a lot of what Victor calls weasel words in the sale.  I have found that being too pushy with the buyer doesn't go down well.  Being too assertive isn't viewed positively and the buyer feels they are being pressured to purchase.  Deals don't get done as a consequence. If it was black and white, that would make things easier, but where is the line between strongly believing in your solution and being too pushy.  I know I really believe in what we sell.  We see the results from our training and how it changes people's lives, so we are all true believers. The problem is the buyers have to buy it, before the results are delivered and they have to take our word for it that what we are saying is true.  We know for certain but they are not sure. We also know that confidence in the solution does sell.  If we are too hesitant, too unsure, too circuitous in our explanation, then the buyer may not receive enough confidence from us, that what we are proposing will do the trick.  How much is too much confidence and how much is too little?  As I say – where is the line? I have found that the key is to be humble about what we say will happen after the sale, in terms of what they will receive in terms of results, and then pile on the evidence.  We can be very sure, passionate and enthusiastic about what we have seen work for someone else.  We can speak with total belief about what we have observed.  We can speak with authority of one who has witnessed the changes and the improvements.  In our explanation of the results from our training, the total certainty is there because we have seen it with our own eyes. When we speak about whether this will automatically transfer across to this particular buyer's situation, we have to be more conservative.  Having perfect knowledge of the buyer's situation internally and externally, is unlikely for us. We cannot say, “well this worked for XYZ company, so it will definitely work the same for you and you will get equal or better results”. This is where the weasel words are needed.  If we are too strong in our recommendation we will be doubted.  Every buyer is concerned that what they buy won't work as advised, and that internally they will be blamed and scolded for their selection of supplier.  They like the passion we show for our belief in the solution, because this gives them more confidence in the possibility it will work.  By not trying to push the sale through, we also show our respect for their position.  We need to say something like, “this worked well for XYZ company, so given your situations are very similar, there is a strong probability it will  work the same for you too”.  When we say it with these caveats, we sound more reliable to the buyer, because we are not giving any 100% guarantees, which may or may not be worth anything. We sound more honest too, because we are introducing the possibility it won't work for them, but that we will make a 100% effort to see that it does work.  That small sense of doubt gives the buyer confidence that what we are saying isn't salesperson blarney and that we are honest and can be trusted as a partner.  We are telling the buyer that we are not here for a sale. We are here for the repeat order and we will do everything we can do to make sure it works so that more orders flow and we build a solid trusted advisor partnership. What we say and how we say it matters in sales and semantics are crucial in getting the deal across the line.

As someone who regularly organizes professional meetings and conferences, I've noticed an interesting phenomenon.When I ask attendees who they want to hear speak, the overwhelming response is that they are "tired of hearing the same old names."People complain that they don't want to travel to a meeting only to listen to the same speakers they see at multiple events throughout the year.However, when I take this feedback to heart and curate speaker lineups featuring lesser-known experts, I often find that attendance suffers. Attendees say they want something new but then don't show up when I (or other organizers) deliver it.Just because a speaker isn't a household name in your industry doesn't mean they can't provide immense value.Some of the highest-rated speakers I've ever featured were people my attendees had never heard of before. Victor Antonio, for example, was one of the most popular speakers at OP Summit, even though most attendees were not familiar with him prior to the event.I would encourage orthodontists to look inward and be honest with themselves about what they truly want from professional meetings. Some top tips … Episode 44: Evergreen funnels with Bailey RichertDefining what an evergreen funnel is and isn't as well as how they can be used to bring in more consistent income between live launches - not to mention adding a lot of peace to your business and finances. Episode 45: Email marketing with Kyle StoutIf you're not focusing on your email list, you're likely missing out on a lot of money since most audiences need more time to be nurtured and understand more about your business and why they should invest before they're ready to purchase. He gives a great perspective on how to think through your email content strategy to make it an engaging, interesting experience that your audience wants to continue reading. Episode 46: Understanding and owning your confidence with Nicole KalilIn her book, Validation is for Parking, Nicole defines confidence as simply trusting yourself as opposed to looking for external sources to provide you with a specific feeling. It's a conscious choice to make a decision and choose it til you become it, which shifts your mind from fake it til you make it. It's ok to be new at something and not to be afraid of failure. Your audience needs to feel your confidence to help inspire their confidence to work with you or buy from you. Episode 47: SEO with Glenneth ReedThe most surprising tip I learned was the impact that specific details about your images have on bringing traffic to your website and keeping visitors there. Unlike many other places, you do not want high-resolution images on your website because it greatly slows down the loading time. When people have to wait, they leave - in a matter of seconds. Also, naming your images in metatags makes a big difference in Google's algorithm. Take the extra time and name them. Also, go back and name existing images. It can make a big difference. Episode 48: Get more sales with better web copy with Reese SpykermanAudiences always respond better to conversational language than formal “business-sounding” language. Also, your headlines are one of the most important parts of your website, especially your homepage. This is what entices your audience to stay put and read more. Don't write generic headlines but make them specific and interesting for your audience. Episode 49: Grow your business like a weed with Stu HeinekeIdentify your unfair advantage in business. Each business has one and once you find yours, incorporate it into your brand. The fastest way to grow is with strategic collaborations, the more, the better. Episode 50-51: Mastering sales conversations with Victor Antonio, parts 1 & 2Put your prospects at ease by simplifying their buying decision and don't bog them down with every detail that goes into providing them with your product or service. Focus on what they care about most. Then, understand what they need to get the best results with their purchase - immediately and down the road. Create an upsell process to build that into the buying experience. Most businesses leave a lot of money on the table because they don't focus on upselling, even though it's in the client's best interest. Women have a unique sales advantage because they are often naturally more focused on listening and wanting to help others. That can make you a better salesperson. Also, make a point to spend time learning how to sell and becoming better at it. You won't have a business without this skill. Episode 52: Become a modern seller with Amy Franko Build a more profitable business by getting a deeper understanding of the most profitable areas in your business - both to your top line and your bottom line. To take pressure off of sales calls, focus on using your expertise in your field to help your prospect walk through the decision-making process, whether that leads them to work with you or go another route, your only job is helping them make the best decision possible based on your knowledge and expertise in the area. However, this works best when you have a strong pipeline of prospects. Episode 53: Growing your business with your podcast with Zandra ZurawZandra shares how she makes the majority of her sales from her podcast by finding different facets of her offers that will interest her audience and sharing those on her show the same way she would talk to a friend. She gives several examples of this and how she's done it to fill up retreats and sell courses. No matter what you want to sell, engaging your audience and bringing them along for the journey is a great way to authentically drive your sales without feeling salesy.
