SynopsisOn today's date in 1941, the final orchestral work of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff received its premiere performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra, led by Eugene Ormandy.It was an orchestral suite, Symphonic Dances, and was originally planned as a triptych depicting the passage of time, with its three sections to be titled “Midday,” “Twilight” and “Midnight.” For this new work, Rachmaninoff recycled music from an older one: an unfinished ballet from 1915.Rachmaninoff was an unabashed and unrepentant Romantic at heart, with his musical style grounded in the late 19th-century tradition. Oddly enough, in all other matters Rachmaninoff was modern — even trendy. When living in Russia, he owned the first automobile in his rural part of the country. Global sanctions and boycotts are a critical tool being used to pressure and isolate Putin. At the same time, this moment has proved precarious for some Russian businesses in the U.S. Vandals broke windows at the Russia House Restaurant in D.C. last week. The famous Russian Tea Room in New York sat almost empty this week, despite posting on their website that they stand with Ukraine.  We speak with Anton Svyatsky, managing partner of Fragment Gallery, which works with marginalized artists in Russia and Eastern Europe to amplify their visibility and facilitate conversation with the West. Her credits include TV, radio, nightclubs, country clubs, cultural centers, retirement venues and libraries. In 1978 she began a twenty-seven year stint in the cabaret world, performing in all the leading Manhattan cabaret clubs, including The Russian Tea Room, The Firebird Cafe, Judy's Supper Club, Danny's Skylight Room and the Hideaway Room at Helen's. She has recorded ten CDs. Diana is also the creator and Artistic Director of "Broadway In The Bronx", a variety show featuring top-notch cabaret artists. Her talent was recognized and honored by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs when they presented her with their 2006 MAC Award for Best Female Vocalist. Diana taught tap dancing for eight years and in 1979 she choreographed the Off-Broadway show "Stardust" presented at The Carter Theatre in NYC

I am delighted to be joined by Ruth , Managing Director of The Admirable Crichton. The Admirable Crichton celebrate their 40th year in 2021 as one of London's most prestigious and innovative caterers. Ruth's career over the last 25 years has equally seen her working at some of the best venues in London including Royal Palaces, Exclusive Private Homes, The RAC Club and National Architectural Gems. In true Ruth style she takes us all to the Russian Tea Room in New York for an immersive and hugely fun 80's themed party. Greeted by actors dressed as Polar Bears on Roller skates, and with the venue decked in full neon, the scene is set for the celebrations ahead. Guests will be served 1911 Champagne, Bramble Cocktails and stunning canapes. Dinner starts by staying true its Russian home with a Smoked Salmon & Caviar Bar and, with Ruth being a pescatarian, for the main course guests are served Nobu's Blackened Cod. This is followed by Baked Alaska and an extensive cheese trolley to graze on as the evening progresses. Keeping it 80's Rick Astley will be there to get guests on the dancefloor and the amazing actor, presenter and raconteur, Michael Palin, will be there for enlightening and uplifting conversation. Ruth touches on her amazing memories from working in the events industry and the mentors who have led her through the good times and the bad as her career has progressed. Ruth takes us through her learnings, actions and hopes from her career and through the pandemic period. She touches on how it has accelerated pivots, how it has helped to re-invigorate her love for events and the light it has thrown on the importance of creating the right work / life balance in the events industry in the long term. She is open about how she has learnt from her mistakes and how she continues to look at ideas from different industries that can be incorporated into events driving future success. Overall it was an absolute pleasure to discuss her career and her fabulous party and I shall hold out hope for the invite envelope arriving at some point in my letter box.

Synopsis On this date in 1948, the ballet “Fall River Legend” was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera House by the Ballet Theatre of New York. The previous year, de Mille and Gould had met at the Russian Tea Room to discuss their ballet, a retelling of the true story of Lizzie Borden, acquitted for the gruesome ax murders of her father and step-mother. Both de Mille and Gould thought Borden must have been guilty as charged. “Well, what shall we do about that,” asked de Mille. “Hang her!” said Gould, adding that it any case it would be easier for him to write hanging music than acquittal music. So, with that large dollop of poetic license, de Mille and Gould came up with the scenario for a ballet that opens with Lizzie standing before the gallows. Morton Gould was known for his ability to blend folk music, jazz, gospel, blues, and other elements into lively, colorful orchestral works. He was also a noted conductor, with over one hundred recordings to his credit—including a classic RCA “Living Stereo” recording of the Suite he arranged from his “Fall River Legend” ballet.

What does it mean to be American? This isn't just a question for us in 2018 -- it was an unanswered question for the country in the late 19th century when it came to musical identity. And of all the people to try to answer it, it may have been the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak who came closest, while living in New York City and a small town in Iowa during the 1890s. Dvorak harnessed what he experienced -- African-American folk tunes, Native American culture, sounds of nature -- and worked them into four pieces including his most famous, the symphony "From the New World." In this episode, Bob Crawford and Matt Negrin (neither of whom are experts on Dvorak but who did play viola like Dvorak) sit in the Russian Tea Room next to Carnegie Hall where the New World symphony debuted to discuss their favorite classical music composer, and what it must have been like to be Dvorak in America.

Jim Caruso made his Broadway debut alongside Liza Minnelli in the smash hit Liza’s At The Palace!, singing, dancing and celebrating the music and arrangements of the late, great Kay Thompson and the Williams Brothers. The show was honored with a 2009 Tony Award for Best Special Event and the recording was nominated for a Grammy.For his nightclub work, Caruso has won six MAC Awards and two BackStage Bistro Awards for sold-out shows at Birdland, The Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel, and The Russian Tea Room. He has also performed at clubs in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Palm Beach and London.His recent studio recording, “The Swing Set,” was called “a top drawer, first-rate swinger” by Jazz Times and “a completely entertaining experience” by All About Jazz. His first CD, "Caruso Live and In Person," went to number one on both the album and singles charts at Outvoice.com. Jim was featured in a Tribute to Kander & Ebb at Carnegie Hall, backed by the New York Pops, and performed in a Tribute to Hope & Crosby in an evening hosted by Michael Feinstein at Zankel Hall.
