“In terms of specialized AI within these industries. They're years and years ahead of where the animal movement currently is. Factory farms are increasingly using AI as well to do things like predicting the growth rate of chickens so that they can set the environmental variables up perfectly to exploit these animals as efficiently as possible.” – Sam Tucker   Sam Tucker is the founder of Open Paws, a nonprofit aimed at creating ethically aligned AI systems and he's the creator of Veg 3, an AI chatbot promoting animal rights.   Sam's expertise in AI development and animal protection provides both a practical and theoretical understanding of how to create technologies that benefit all species.   I asked Sam to come on the show because I want to understand how we, Species Unite and other organizations like us can be using AI to be way more effective.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: AI, Animals, and Digital Minds 2024 - Retrospective, published by Constance Li on June 19, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a retrospective of the AIADM 2024 Conference, Retreat, and Co-working in London. Tl;dr: ~130 people joined together over the span of three days to learn, connect, and make progress towards making AI safe for nonhumans. Background This event followed in the footsteps of the October 2023 Artificial Intelligence, Conscious Machines, and Animals: Broadening AI Ethics conference held at Princeton by Peter Singer, Tse Yip Fai, Leonie Bossert and Thilo Hagendorff. It was planned in a [formerly private] AI Coalition channel on the Hive Slack that many of the attendees of the original conference were invited to for the purposes of continuing conversation. It was here that I discovered that running the conference in 2024 would be highly counterfactual because Peter Singer was retiring from Princeton and none of the previous organizers were planning on repeating it. We were able to get permission to hold the second iteration of the conference and even got a promotional endorsement by Peter Singer. The process of planning took place over several months and was independently funded. Objective The goal for this event was to explore how we can develop AI technologies in a way that protects and benefits nonhuman animals and potentially sentient AI. We had the dual purpose of increasing the salience of the field of AI and Nonhumans and also getting potential leaders to network with one another. To advance the former goal, the content and programming needed to be highly accessible so we made it hybrid, recorded as much as practical, created website pages and social media assets for speakers to help with pre-conference promotion and future SEO for the speakers, and added more event space as the RSVPs crept up. It was open to anyone who could offer value to furthering this field, including, but not limited to, thought leaders, researchers, industry workers, funders and hopeful future contributors. Timing and location All in-person events took place in London immediately after EAG London (May 31 - June 2) June 3: Conference (hybrid: onsite - live room and overflow room, offsite - livestreaming, and virtual) June 4-5: Retreat (virtual and in-person options that only synced up during hour of livestreamed lightning talks) June 6-11: Co-working (in person) Attendees There were 260+ applications for attendance. A directory was created of people who consented to have their application answers shared with other attendees. These included answers to questions such as: What is your experience or demonstrated interest in the topic? Why do you want to attend? What can you offer to other attendees? Conference The 1st day was a hybrid conference: It took place at the London School of Economics (LSE), split between 2 rooms which had around 50-60 total attendees. It was also streamed live to Newspeak House which had 10-15 attendees. Around 50-70 people attended via zoom. We had a very tight schedule and prioritized having more time for Q&A so each talk was only 10 - 20 minutes long and we grouped similar talks together as panels. VEG3 is an AI-powered marketing assistant that helps vegan businesses and animal rights charities create impactful marketing campaigns that increase revenue while saving animals. After spending more than a decade laser-focused on making data-driven decisions to maximize the impact of work done by vegan businesses, VEG3 founder, Sam Tucker, realized there was a technological revolution happening that could scale the vegan movement and its economic impact to a previously unprecedented level. https://veg3.ai/Quote Scalability of your impact, especially as a vegan business, is driven by more than just the desire for profit - we have this deeper purpose of trying to change the world. And to change the world, it requires a lot more work than any one human can do on their own. So you have to be able to let go and to delegate in order to grow.—Sam Tucker⚙️ [00:40] How AI can be a tool in your toolkit and help you grow business. ▶️ [02:23] Animal activist since his teenage years: the idea of working in digital space was born out of limited scalability issues for nonprofits.

I am so excited to move forward with a vision I have had for a long time: a video version of the Creative Living with Jamie Podcast. It's a work in progress and there's a lot to learn but it is such a joy to make a start. Here's the very first episode, which features an interview with artist Sam Tucker, who uses words and images to tell the stories of her life. About Sam Tucker Sam Tucker is a storyteller in words and images.  She is currently immersed in a long-term project, an illustrated memoir and storybook chronicling her journey through the grief of losing her partner while wandering the country on an epic road trip. For years, Sam kept her creative dreams hidden in the shadows of her vibrant business consulting practice.  The journey to embracing her artistry, the essence of who she is, was a long and meaningful one that included journaling, visual journaling, book binding, collage and various forms of writing.  The turning point for Sam, that point where she finally stepped in and claimed her artistry was nearly two years ago.  Sam was part of the initial offering of the artist residency program, Devotion with Jamie Ridler.  That was a game changer!  Today, Sam divides her time between traveling the U.S. and finishing her memoir, Lost in Bentonia. BONUS CONTENT: I've put together a PDF of the transcripts in a  magazine style. It even includes a little creative assignment for you to keep the inspiration going and the creativity flowing. Mountain Mosaic has caught a nice draft and rolls on in the springtime sunshine, rocking and rolling to the sweet, sweet sounds of unpolished recording: Typing, popping tabs, unbalanced laughter audio, and the honest sharing of thoughts in the hope of inspiring others- or at least provoking thought. Episode 5 features Sam Tucker, in his words, "putting his cards on the table." Sam boldly speaks candidly about the challenges he's faced and his facing, specifically regarding self belief- or the lack thereof. We crack a couple of Meadjitos and dive into the grit beyond the surface level. It is brilliant to hear someone speak honestly about process and come to the understanding that their sun is still low in the sky not through ignorance, but through experience and acceptance. We all have internal challenges. We can choose to cower and be consumed by them, or we can go to battle and embrace the fight. War is hell, and Sam Tucker is a goddamn soldier!!!!! Break out of your cage, and get this!!!!!!! Episode Notes: As always, I do not own or claim to own some of the content in the intro. This one features the classic "Zombie Kid" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMNry4PE93Y), as well as a sound bit from the viral "Damn Ass Rock" video which has been removed from youtube. I do not own that content. One also cannot forget the sweet and wise Borat (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBduNcf1eQc) These are for entertainment purposes only. They are hilarious and deserve to be shared! I mention "A Better You" from the TED Radio Hour Podcast, which can be found here. https://www.npr.org/programs/ted-radio-hour/529942522/a-better-you We also mention Ethan Pringle for the third time in this podcast. Ethan Pringle is a personal source of inspiration. I admire his acceptance, understanding, and courage of the entire process instead of choosing to ignore the grit in his media. NZ Vegan Podcast Episode 40 - How to be a vegan in a capitalist society? Just kidding, I know nothing about politics

NZ Vegan Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2012

Listen HEREThis week I talk about how as a vegan consumer in a capitalist society I am trying to work as best as I can in the system, as a consumer in my daily life, aside from the main focus of advocating to individuals for a paradigm shift, and opening people's minds up to a fundamentally different way of thinking about all other animals and life on the planet by promoting the abolitionist approach and veganism. I admit I am very uneducated about politics, history, agriculture, sociology, and a myriad of other extremely important subject matters related to vegan advocacy, so I will do my best to educate myself as best I can for the rest of my life, and in the meantime lean heavily on my colleagues and fellow advocates who ARE educated in these things :-)So this podcast is just some of my personal thoughts, as always, and I do appreciate any advice and constructive criticism. One of the things I touch on is how we can avoid buying from companies that are direct exploiters of animals and their products, i.e non vegan restaurants for example. The truth is, most of us can't. I mean, we can easily choose to avoid some of them (non vegan restaurants for example) but what about the supermarket? What about where we buy our clothing? What about where we buy our fruit and vegetables? My fruit and vege place sells eggs and ice cream bars. Some people are lucky enough to have access and money to buy all their products from purely vegan online suppliers, but I am not one of them. That is why I always affirm that I personally am part of the problem, which is one of the many reasons I feel such a strong urge to rectify the problem and why make it my personal responsibility to do so as best I can. Please keep in mind, this is nothing at all like some "Vegan Outreach" advocacy that says "oh don't make a fuss and try to be pure, just eat the egg product every now and then so people don't think we are too fanatical". No no no. I am an ethical vegan. I am, however, a human being, an active consumer, and I live in a speciesist society, and whether I like it or not, I am contributing to industries that exploit animals, even when I buy my fruit and veges from the fruit and vege store. BUT we must let the producers know we vegans exist—that there is a legitimate and lucritive demand for vegan products. I am not a supporter of capitalism, I would like to see a better system, but I also live in reality and face truths. Right now, today, I live in a capitalist society and am an active member and consumer in that society whether I like it or not. So in the meantime too, while we are still working for change, we must have a voice. It will grow to a thunderous roar, right now it is a whisper in the grand scheme of things. But that will change. Until it does; don't be shy! Demand vegan! Ask for vegan products. Enquire about vegan products. MENTION vegan products at the very least. Educate sellers and producers about the vegan consumer. Tell them it's a guaranteed sale. That'll prick up their greedy little ears.Note: I don't consider "prick up their ears" to be a bad animal metaphor. That is because the way I look at it; noting that some lovely animals have ears that can prick up and using it metaphorically for human animals whose ears don't prick up doesn't have anything to do with exploiting the animals whose ears do prick up, so I think this is an acceptable animal metaphor. Thoughts? There is SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT it is just an inexhaustible subject this animal exploitation, unfortunately. I wish we didn't have to talk about it, but we DO.This week I mentioned some other podcasts and blogs and I would like to provide those links here, but they are also in my blog link list too.Firstly I mentioned Gary Francione's latest episode from his Abolitionist Approach Commentary:A Discussion of Abolitionist PrincipalsRoger Yates from his On Human Nonhuman Relations podcast:Dehumanization Processes Part OneDehumanization Processes Part TwoVincent Guihan from We Other Animals and Animal Emancipation:We Other Animals RadioI must make a correction - the podcast is called We Other Animals Radio not Animal Emancipation. My intro was my latest mention on No Agenda, although Dvorak got my podcast wrong, I DO NOT own the NZ Vegan podcast :) I do enjoy telling people to search for "NZ Vegan" when they look for my podcast on iTunes, because searching for "NZ Vegan" shows up all the New Zealand Animal Rights podcasts. I almost uniformly love each and every one of the results.I just wanted to let everyone know, I've decided to do all future animal rights, and Vegan related episodes under a separate designation. This will make it easier to just listen to the episodes you are actually interested in, if you want to only hear me talk about NZ news or movies, or if you want to only hear vegan topics. Or, ideally you could subscribe to both! The name of my new podcast, chosen by my friend Sam Tucker, is Coexisting with Nonhuman Animals. I asked for help on Veganzchat, an email group, with a starting point of " living with animals ", asking for it to be improved upon. Sam kindly came up with Coexisting with Nonhuman Animals. I like it very much, although it is a long name. You can find that blog at Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals.blogspot.com. I'm not sure how often I'll update each podcast, just when I feel like it most likely. To make up for this being a short episode, Im going to include some of my favourite outro clips. I have the autotuned Glorious Dawn, using clips of Carl Sagan, a famous astronomer, an american church which has banned Pepsi, and Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO, on the iPhone before it were released.Just to make it clear, you can find Coexisting with Nonhuman Animals on iTunes, by searching for it by name, although it shows up just fine if you search for " jay wont dart ", both my podcasts will show.
