Close to midnight on May 17, 1951, four north Alabama lawmen drove to a bootlegger's home to serve an arrest warrant. Before the clock struck twelve, the bootlegger lay dead in front of the house he shared with his wife and eight children, and three of the four officers were also dead. Afterward, a sixteen-year-old boy would face a series of trials that would divide a county and thrust the state of Alabama into the national spotlight. My guest is Professor Lesa Carnes Shaul, author of "Midnight Cry: A Shooting on Sand Mountain". She grew up on Sand Mountain hearing stories about this sensational shootout and joins me to talk about her research into this fascinating case. In this episode, host Zach Urness talks with two Oregon researchers that just published a study about a massive underground aquifer below the Central Cascade Mountains east of Salem and Eugene. Leif Karlstrom, a University of Oregon earth scientist, and Gordon Grant, a hydrologist with the U.S. Forest Service, discuss an aquifer they estimate as containing 81 cubic kilometers of freshwater — or roughly as much water contained in three Lake Meads, the largest reservoir in the United States. Karlstrom and Grant talk about how the aquifer is formed, where it's located (roughly between Mount Jefferson and south of McKenzie Pass) and why it's important in a warming future. They also talk about how it fuels many of Oregon's most famous rivers and spurs dramatic volcanic eruptions at places such as Sand Mountain.

If you've ever watched Josh Daiek's POV ski footage, you've probably been more gripped staring at your phone than he is straight-lining a couloir at Mach Chicken. So when Josh and his filmmaking adventure partner Hazen Woolson set out to make a new ski film for their sponsor Salomon, they wanted to do something different and unexpected to blow peoples' minds. Mountain State and Mountain State 2.0 were the result; two films exploring the rugged and seldom skied wilds of Nevada and the Great Basin, the latter of which recently took home “Best Backcountry Segment” from the IF3 Film Festival. In Episode 26, the boys sit down with Josh and Hazen at Gear Lab in South Lake Tahoe to chat all about the making of the films, from the highs of scoring in last year's record-breaking winter to the lows of getting skunked the two previous winters and Josh's terrifying skirt with certain peril skiing the East Humboldt Range. True Crime Tuesday presents With The Devil's Help: A True Story of Poverty, Mental Illness, and Murder with Author Neal Wooten! Neal Wooten grew up in a tiny community atop Sand Mountain, Alabama, where everyone was white and everyone was poor. Prohibition was still embraced. If you wanted alcohol, you had to drive to Georgia or ask the bootlegger sitting next to you in church. Tent revivals, snake handlers, and sacred harp music were the norm, and everyone was welcome as long as you weren't Black, brown, gay, atheist, Muslim, a damn Yankee, or a Tennessee Vol fan. The Wooten's lived a secret existence in a shack in the woods with no running water, no insulation, and almost no electricity. Even the school bus and mail carrier wouldn't go there. Neal's family could hide where they were, but not what they were. They were poor white trash. Cops could see it. Teachers could see it. Everyone could see it. Growing up, Neal was weaned on folklore legends of his grandfather—his quick wit, quick feet, and quick temper.  He discovers how this volatile disposition led to a murder, a conviction, and ultimately to a daring prison escape and a closely guarded family secret. Being followed by a black car with men in black suits was as normal to Neal as using an outhouse, carrying drinking water from a stream, and doing homework by the light of a kerosene lamp. And Neal's father, having inherited the very same traits of his father, made sure the frigid mountain winters weren't the most brutal thing his family faced. The “calling out” of Abe (and his friends) at church services reaches a boiling point at the famed “Old Rockhouse Holiness” in Section, Alabama. It's the church where author Dennis Covington of the hit book Salvation on Sand Mountain once became a convert and handled a massive rattlesnake. Abe tells the story of the founding of the church: the infamous murder trial and conviction at the heart of it.  After one service that Abe attended, with rattlesnakes in the building, the lights are shut off. In the darkness, Abe and his friend consider running out of the church. Meanwhile, Abe has his first encounter with National Geographic: a run-in with a photographer at both Old Rockhouse Holiness Church and, in the same weekend, Jimmy Morrow's church in Cocke County, Tennessee.   Brother Jimmy Morrow takes Abe to a graveyard high in the east Tennessee mountains, to see the graves of four believers who died following the signs.  Visit the Alabama Astronaut Podcast website for more content!Alabama Astronaut Podcast website Find us on social, too:Alabama Astronaut FacebookAlabama Astronaut's TwitterAlabama Astronaut Instagram Special thanks this episode:  Old Rock House Holiness Church Bro. This year Joey Lichter came back to the Last Annual Vol State 500k for redemption, and he did it! He made it to "the Rock" with a total of 7 days, 17 hours, 3 seconds!!! This was far better from his 2018 appearance where Joey had to pull the plug at 60 Miles, just two days into his journey. This year he managed to find that inner peace, overcome some brutal conditions to his feet, and the randomness of legit sleep. The Vol-State 500k is a journey, an adventure, and an exploration of inner space. It begins with a ferry ride across the Mississippi River, from Missouri to Kentucky, and finishes at “the Rock,” high atop Sand Mountain in technically Northeast Georgia. However, you spend the bulk of your miles with the journey across Tennessee! Joey has done races like the Icarus, Death at DuPuis, Picnic Island Ultras, Skydive Ultra, The Georgia Jewel, the Trident, and the Vero Beach Octopus Ultra!

Kenzie Allen on her selection: Growing up, I spent precious time each summer on a fire lookout, Sand Mountain, in the Oregon Cascades, and I still return there to volunteer with my father, as happened just last week. Each time I read “deer crowd up to see the lamp,” and “pancakes every morning of the world,” I'm transported back to the mountains, even (and especially) when I'm sitting on the fire lookout itself. For Philip Whalen, Gary Snyder, Jack Kerouac, and for me, these places invite philosophy and meditation, and an openness to wonder, which I hope Whalen's “Sourdough Mountain Lookout” can inspire for others. Up in the Middle of the Night? It May Be Natural. Research raises questions about the importance of sleeping through the night. I got the invitation? So do I do 300 plus miles of racing across Tennessee in the middle of the summer? #VolState #Sleep #RunWalk The upshot is that we still have a lot to learn about sleep and insomnia. For individuals who wake up in the middle of the night, the realization that their awakening may just be a throwback to an earlier sleep pattern may reduce some of the frustration and anxiety they feel. This is part of the cognitive behavioral technique of cognitive restructuring, or reducing stress by having more accurate information about sleep. It is also possible that we need to think about other patterns of sleep and not confine ourselves to assuming that the regimented, factory-shift-driven model we’ve all come to know is what we should to strive for. There is likely more than one way for the Sandman to welcome us to the Land of Nod. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/sleepless-in-america/201609/in-the-middle-the-night-it-may-be-natural The Vol-State is not just another ultramarathon. It is much more than that. The Vol-State is a journey, an adventure, and an exploration of inner space. It begins with a ferry ride across the Mississippi River, from Missouri to Kentucky, and finishes at “the Rock,” high atop Sand Mountain in Northeast Georgia. What lies in between are 314 miles of the great unknown. From the time the Vol-Stater steps off the Ferry, until they reach the Rock, they are totally reliant upon their own physical and mental resources. For the next four to ten days, in the face of the heat and humidity of July in Tennessee , the Vol-Stater must make their way on foot, along highways and backroads, from one small town to the next, over hills and across rivers, up mountains and down long valleys, all the while accounting for all of their most basic needs; “what will I eat?” “When will I find water?” Where will I sleep?” Principles behind Run Walk Run: • Continuous use of a muscle will result in quicker fatigue • The longer the run segment, the more fatigue • Run Walk Run is a form of interval training • Conservation of resources • Quicker recovery • Less stress on the “weak links” • Ability to enjoy endorphins • Reduce core body temperature http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/run-walk/ In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. This was my first injury since I started Endurance Training in 1979. Then in late April of 2020, I ended up in the hospital for the first time in my life. The diagnosis was Congestive Heart Failure. India Ramey is a singer/songwriter from Birmingham, AL. She is the granddaughter of a Sand Mountain bluegrass and gospel musician and career piano tuner.Blasting twin barrels of Americana noire and southern-gothic songwriting, India Ramey fires on all cylinders with her national debut, Snake Handler. Pentecostal churches, broken households, crooked family trees, forgotten pockets of the Deep South, and domestic violence all fill the album's 10 songs, whose autobiographical lyrics pull from Ramey's experience as a young girl in rural Georgia. Intensely personal and sharply written, Snake Handler shines a light on the darkness of Ramey's past, driving out any lingering demons — or snakes, if you will — along the way.  Recorded March 2018 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our guest, Gary Carlyle talks about growing up on Sand Mountain in North Alabama. Sand Mountain, which is most famous for its snake-handling culture, as told about in the book by Dennis Covington, Salvation on Sand Mountain, provided lots for a growing boy to get into and Gary is full of stories that will make you laugh and make you wish you were a mischievous kid again. Mentoring and educating young people is at the top of Gary's priorities and he's dedicated his life to teaching young men and women, through word and deed, the life skills necessary to survive and flourish in life. Next, I'm feeling nostalgic and a little homesick after traveling the last two weekends, so I'm inspired to write a little ode to Home. Be it ever so humble, there's no place like it.

Amanda and Alice talk nonfiction about the Civil Rights movement, memoirs of interesting people, and more in this week's (all nonfiction!) episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Book Riot's TBR, Nobody Real, and LibraryReads. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS here, or via Apple Podcasts here. The show can also be found on Stitcher here.   Feedback None this week! Questions   1. TL/DR: Looking for book recommendations for my mom. Any good nonfiction about civil war/reconstruction/Jim Crow-era? Longer story: This weekend during a visit with my parents, it became very evident that my mom (aged 69) has some cringe-worthy misconceptions about the origins of the Civil War ("It wasn't about slavery"), the relationships between slaves and slaveowners ("Many slaves loved for their masters"), and doesn't have an understanding of how current cycles of poverty can be traced back to how black Americans were treated after the Civil War. My father and I tried to help, but she's resistant to most things my dad says. I gave her my copy of Zinn's A Young People's History of the United States, but she actually asked (a win!) for books that could help her understand the plight of freed slaves after the Civil War. Can you help? TIA for any all assistance in updating my mom's education! Sincerely, Bevin 2. Your WWII suggestion, My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me, got me thinking about my own family history (though hopefully nothing so awful would come up). More than my own family history, I am interested in learning more about the places my ancestors are from, especially Germany (before the World Wars), the Phillippines, and Hawaii before it was a state. Historical fiction or non-fiction recs are both great, in any format. Thanks! -Kristin   3. I'm really interested in hiking and travel books. I've already read the current big two books: Wild and A Walk in the Woods, but I want to read more books like those, either fiction or non-fiction. Also road trip books would be good too. Thanks! Lily   4. I first read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil a few years ago, and although I have read and loved so many books since, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil still stands out as one of those books that completely captivated me. There were many things to love about it, but I especially loved how it made me feel completely immersed in the location, and how it allowed me to indulge in the idea that it was a mysterious and almost unreal place. I would love suggestions for either non-fiction or fiction that would give me that same feeling about a real-life location. Any ideas? Thanks! -Janine   5.  I'm looking for fiction and non-fiction epistolary novel recommendations. As a kid I absolutely loved the Dear America Series, but I'm having hard time YA or Adult books in that genre. Dangerous Liaisons and Dracula weren't my cup of tea. I enjoyed The Diary of Anne Frank, The Color Purple, Dear Thief, and I, Vampire. Thanks Olivia   6. I am not a huge reader, but I've been trying to read more non-fiction and recently read "an astronaut's guide to life" by chris hadfield. And it's basically about his personal journey that brought him to becoming an astronaut. More than anything I found this book really Inspiring and Motivating. I tried to look for more "motivating" books but all I found were self help and this is NOT what I want. I would really like to read more books like Hadfield's, about interesting people who have really great successful careers but also had to put in a lot of work to get there and who have interesting outlooks/attitudes on life. THIS is what really motivated me after reading Hadfield's book. Books written by women is also a big plus. Thank you so much for all your wonderful work. Violet   7. I've long been a huge fan of audiobooks but never thought non-fiction was in my wheelhouse. After being introduced to podcasts (like Get Booked!) - to my great surprise, I've discovered that I love listening to non-fiction selections. The catch is that the book needs to be as engaging as a podcast. Examples of recent audio books I've enjoyed as audiobooks are American Fire and Killer of the Flower Moon. I also love books with buzz. What recommendations can you share? -Lisa   Books Discussed Blood at the Root by Patrick Phillips Capitol Men: The Epic Story of Reconstruction Through the Lives of the First Black Congressmen by Philip Dray History of the Philippines by Luis Francia Germania: In Wayward Pursuit of the Germans and Their History by Simon Winder An African in Greenland by Tété-Michel Kpomassie, James Kirkup (translator) The Ridiculous Race: 26,000 Miles, 2 Guides, 1 Globe, No Airplanes by Steve Hely and Vali Chandrasekaran Border: A Journey to the Edge of Europe by Kapka Kassabova Salvation on Sand Mountain by Dennis Covington Frances and Bernard by Carlene Bauer Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs Make Trouble by Cecile Richards Happy Accidents: A Memoir by Jane Lynch Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty The Real Lolita: The Kidnapping of Sally Horner and the Novel That Scandalized the World by Sarah Weinman

For thousands of years, much of western Nevada was submerged under the waters of ancient Lake Lahontan. About 4,000 years ago, climate change caused the waters to recede and the area around what is now Fallon, Nevada became a dry desert playa. Prevailing winds from the west blew millions of tons of sand from this playa into a 500-foot high pile of sand now known as Sand Mountain. In modern times, Sand Mountain became an attraction to dune buggy enthusiasts and it became a popular recreation destination. Continue reading →

The Can You Hear Me? crew finally addresses the loss of the late great Merle Haggard on this week's episode.  They've been talking to one another off air about how much Merle meant to them in their personal musical pantheons, but they finally bring it out to the public. But, as you know by now, they can't stay on topic and in short order, Gustav yanks the wheel hard to the right and they go careening into the bar ditch for their normal bumpy ride.  The first thing to derail Gustav is the professional connection between Merle Haggard and Clint Eastwood in the late seventies/early eighties.  Instantly, it's no longer about Merle Haggard, but instead turns into: an dust up over spaghetti westerns, harsh opinions about Sandra Locke (Clint's girlfriend during that era), and the iconic status of Johnny Cash, both in his heyday and in the final years of his life. The day before this episode was recorded, Heavy and Gustav had gone back to their hometown which is somewhere in the 903 area code.    They attended a funeral for a long time family friend who had been in bad health for many years.  As they stood at the graveside on a hot June afternoon, they both were contemplating the phenomena of the rural funeral.   A heated discussion ensues which devolves into doctrinal differences between Methodists and Baptists, Gustav's tale of dueling preachers at his great-grandmothers funeral and the wonderful book Salvation on Sand Mountain, which details a snake handling congregation in Appalachia. After such serious topics as funerals and theology, the guys lighten up with some banter about our fathers with smart phones, Heavy's new underwear and Gustav and Ty stockpiling socks. The guys also give a big shout out to their fellow podcasters at Partial Recall who fondly look back at the nineties and aughts.   Take a moment to check them out.   The post Merle, Burials, and Boxer Briefs appeared first on Can You Hear Me?.
