If you have ever had a teenager in your home, you know that they have their own unique teenage aroma. New research out this week was able to confirm that teenagers typically smell of goats, cheese and urine- and there is a chemical reason why. Published in the journal Communications Chemistry, the researchers sewed cotton wool pads into the armpit area of pyjamas to collect the sweat from 36 volunteers who wore them overnight. 18 of the volunteers were infants aged 3 and under and 18 of the volunteers were teenagers aged 14-18. The extracted sweat was then analysed using both a gas chromatography-olfactometry device for chemical analysis as well as professions human smellers. The infants had their own unique smell which was described as smelling like violets and due to a higher level of the ketone α-isomethylionone. They found that chemically two steroids 5α-androst-16-en-3-one and 5α-androst-16-en-3α-ol were only present in the teenage sweat. These steroids are reported to have a smell that is similar to sweat, urine, musk and sandalwood. The teenagers also had elevated levels of six different carboxylic acids which smell of goat, cheese, capsicim and wax according to the professional smellers. The change in the smell of teenagers is due to the onset of activity of sweat and sebum glands combined with hair growth, and microbes on the skin. Sebum is an oily substance that helps to protect your skin and these glands become very active around puberty. While the study didn't come up with a conclusion as to why the smell of teenagers changes, previous research into stickleback fish found that related sticklebacks dislike each other's smell once they reach sexual maturity which might help them to avoid inbreeding. Whatever the reason – the likelihood is that your teenager stinks and there isn't much anyone can do about it. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Buying shampoo can be overwhelming – there are so many brands to choose from, across a huge range of prices. Some brands promise to repair and nourish our hair, while others promise to strengthen and add volume. But are any of these claims true? Do we even need shampoo at all? Since long before shampoo was invented – some say in India – our bodies have been producing sebum – an oil-like substance. Sebum stops our skin from getting dry, manages the health of our scalp and makes our hair shiny. But it also collects dirt, and, if left untouched for too long, sebum can cause our hair to become greasy. There are no disadvantages from a health perspective to letting our hair be greasy, says Eleanore Richardson, Trichologist at Fulham Scalp and Hair Clinic, but many people choose to wash their hair regularly for aesthetic reasons. Fulham Scalp and Hair Clinic And so we reach for the shampoo bottle. Shampoos contain a group of chemicals called surfactants. They grab the dirt and grease from the surface of our hair, meaning when we rinse away the shampoo, we also wash away the grease and dirt. But, as Laura Waters, who's a Professor of Pharmaceutical Analysis in the School of Applied Sciences at Huddersfield University, points out, 'some surfactants work too well' and take the natural oils out of the hair, as well. More expensive shampoos may contain less harsh surfactants, but – adds Laura Waters – the type of shampoo doesn't really matter. 'It's on our hair very briefly and gets washed away'. It's the conditioners and styling products that we use after the shampoo that make a bigger difference to the texture and feel of our hair. Of course, the more we put onto our hair, the more we need to cleanse it off, creating a vicious circle. So, yes, it seems we do have a need for shampoo, but we also shouldn't expect it to be a miracle cure. And, finally, next time you're in a shampoo aisle, remember that hair is made up of dead protein cells and that, sadly, not even the most expensive shampoo can bring them back to life.
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.01.530578v1?rss=1 Authors: Walton-Doyle, C., Heim, B., Sinclair, E., Hollywood, K., Milne, J., Holzknecht, E., Stefani, A., Hogl, B., Seppi, K., Silverdale, M., Poewe, W., Barran, P., Trivedi, D. K. Abstract: Background: Parkinson's Disease (PD) has been associated with a distinct odour, strongest in sebum-rich areas. Thermal Desorption Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (TDGCMS) has revealed volatile signatures that distinguish individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD) from healthy controls. Here, we applied the same method, including subjects with isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD) to examine the volatiles in sebum and compare this with that found in PD subjects and control participants. Participants with iRBD have a high likelihood for conversion to overt clinical synucleinopathies like PD, Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) or (less commonly) Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). Methods: Subjects with clinically established PD (n=16) or iRBD (n=9) as well as healthy controls (n=9) were included. Following methods established in our laboratory, sebum was sampled from each participant using cotton gauze and the headspace from these swabs, analysed directly with TDGCMS. Univariate and multivariate analysis was employed to probe the differences between volatile metabolites found for each phenotype. Putative identifications were assigned using spectral matching against the Golm metabolome and NIST spectral databases. Findings: We can completely classify each phenotype using the sampled volatilome from which we built models with logistic regression analysis. The classification between PD and control improved on previously published work, from 85% to 100%. Putatively annotated molecules include alkanes, aldehydes, fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), and three metabolites namely purine, tropinone and oleamide. Investigation of highly ranked features revealed 18 features that showed intermediate expression in samples from iRBD participants. Interpretation: TDGCMS can differentiate volatile metabolite signatures from sebum between PD, RDB and control samples. More than 70% of the identifiable metabolites that 2 permit this discrimination were putatively annotated as hydrocarbons and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). Our prior work indicates that these components arise from larger lipid molecules that decompose during the experiment. Features putatively annotated as tropinone, oleamide and purine, have previously been linked with neuroprotection, sleep induction and antioxidation, respectively, are significantly different between the three groups of participants, along with FAMEs and hydrocarbons. Is your teen struggling with acne? Acne can be a concern for many teenagers, impacting their self-esteem and moods. Acne can be a big problem during puberty for both boys and girls. During puberty, there is an increase in androgens – the male sex hormones. Both boys and girls experience a surge of these hormones. This surge increases the amount of sebum produced on the skin. Until the hormone and sebum levels balance, it can lead to breakouts and acne.In this podcast episode, I discuss:My own personal story with acne, and how it lead me to my passion in food, nutrition, naturopathy, and gut health; Why teenagers develop acne; How acne is a western problem and why teenagers in traditional populations don't experience acne, and what this tells us;The three most common medications prescribed to treat acne and why they offer a bandaid solution and do not address the root cause;I also chat about how diet plays a huge role, including:The two foods to avoid or reduce in teens who have acne issues; How you can go about reducing these foods; The role gut health plays; The most important nutrients for teenagers who have acne; How these nutrients can support healthy hormone function, improve skin quality, reduce inflammation, and more.If acne is a concern for your teen, why not book an Express Consultation with our Naturopath Sarah? Do you worry about the dreaded midday shine? This episode is for you! In this episode dedicated to oily skin, chemists Victoria & Gloria talk about the biology of oily skin, why it's not all bad news, and some products and ingredients that target those overly productive sebaceous glands.
What exactly is sebum, and what role does it play in our bodies?
Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum. Sebum is the oily substance that hydrates and protects skin. It's a mixture of dead skin cells and fat lipids that protect skin from drying out. Too much and pores can get clogged resulting in breakouts. There are a few main causes that lead to oily skin.
Wondering if you should bother with an eye cream? Searching for the best one? Then stick around, because on today’s episode, the eyes have it. As the skin around our eyes is the thinnest and most sensitive on our faces, it’s usually where the first signs of aging show up. Often, it’s when those first lines crop up that we think about incorporating an eye cream into our skincare routines. What causes the signs of aging around our eyes? The skin around your eyes is around ten times thinner than the skin on the rest of your face. This means that your eye skin gets less of the benefits of your natural oils. Sebum is the stuff that keeps your skin smooth and appropriately moisturised. On top of this, the effects of being outside (think urban pollution and UV rays) have an impact on your skin. Although we’re all different and the effects of aging happen no matter how well we live, there are a few things that can speed the aging process up. These include: Smoking; Excessive alcohol intake; Sun exposure The reason fine lines and wrinkles show up is because of a gradual loss of collagen and elasticity. Can’t I just use my usual moisturiser on my eyes? Great question. Although it’s true that eye creams are moisturisers, not all moisturisers are eye creams. What sets eye creams apart from your facial moisturiser is that: Eye creams are formulated especially for anti-aging. Ingredients commonly found in eye creams include Niacinamide, Peptides, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Hyaluronic Acid; They are made to be gentle enough to not trigger irritation on the particularly sensitive areas around your eyes. This is not necessarily true for all moisturisers. In addition, if you’re looking to get started with a preventative anti-aging eye cream while you’re in your 20s, you need to watch out for the formulation of your products. Typical anti-aging moisturisers are going to be too thick for young skin. What’s the best way to apply Eye Cream? Softly and gently. Lightly tap and massage eye creams onto our skin, making sure to give it enough time to fully absorb. Although it’s tempting, don’t use too much cream each application. Eye creams have a minimum effective dose and going above it won’t get you better results. In fact, if you over-do it, you may end up with millia. These are unsightly little white dots caused by clogged pores from too much product I recommend using no more than a pea-sized amount. How To Get More Bang for Your Buck With an Eye Cream Apply it to marionette lines and neck lines as well! These areas are similarly prone to wrinkles and fine lines. What is a sebum cure? Thanks for asking! The sebum cure is a natural hair care method, which consists in avoiding shampoo for a given period of time. Certain internet users have taken advantage of self-isolation to try the sebum cure without having to put up with greasy hair in public. So how does it work and is it really effective?Shampoo addicts know for a fact: greasy hair is a true vicious cycle. The greasier it is, the more you wash it, the faster it becomes greasy again. That might have to do with the aggressive nature of some shampoos which irritate the scalp, stimulate sebaceous glands and strip your hair off the sebum that protects the scalp from aggressive factors. So as a way of breaking the cycle of “it gets greasy, I attack it, it gets greasy again” certain influencers promote the sebum cure. The point is quite simple: forget about shampoo for about a month and let your hair get greasy! As you proceed with the cure, it is recommended however to brush your hair daily to remove dust and distribute the sebum evenly along the hair shaft. If you have long hair, in a few weeks the sebum will reach the hair ends and its secretion will self-regulate in a natural way. The hair coated with sebum will be just as well-groomed as if treated with vegetable oils, for example.Proponents of the sebum cure stress the multiple advantages it offers: it facilitates hair growth, makes your hair more voluminous, softer and shinier. Self-isolation comes in handy. Although under different circumstances it’s also possible to go through with the cure by wearing your hair in a bun or putting on an accessory, like a headscarf. And don't forget to brush off the first jerk that comes your way: “Yup, my hair is greasy, do you have a problem with that?” Thirty days later, despite the joy going back to shampoo might bring, it is recommended to opt for a softer kind and take it slow! But is it just a youtuber's trick or does it actually work? Exfoliating the sebum off your scalp is just as important as exfoliating the gunk off your face. Some individuals have so much sebum built up on their scalp that it prevents their topical hair loss treatments from being absorbed properly. When it comes to topical antiandrogens, topical PGD2 inhibitors, growth agonists like Minoxidil, or anything that requires some sort of delivery system, if there is something sitting on your scalp like sebum or dandruff, you may not even be absorbing your topicals properly and getting them delivered where they need to go.…
Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started! Kari: Hi Dr.Stephen Cabral and thank you for taking the time to answer my question today. I’m a 27 yo female living in Brisbane. Within the past year or so I have had about 3 outbreaks of scalp issues. I have had consistent patches of dandruff over this year or so that when scratched too hard often bring blood to the surface and have a burning sensation (similar reaction to when I had full body psoriasis in 2013/14) Although on these 3 occasions I have had what I believe to be sebum build up on the crown of my head. It’s waxy and I cannot get rid of it for days at a time. After blow drying my hair or air drying it’s a very noticeable build up from crown to about 2 inches down my hair. I have tried tea tree oil shampoos, prescription shampoo (clobex clobetasol propionate 500micrograms/mL), head and shoulders and Selsun Gold. It goes away after a week yet returned within 2 weeks on these 3 overall occasions. Throughout all of this I have not tried to change my diet although I eat 70/30 clean and healthy but don’t hold myself back when I want a treat or junk food. I was diagnosed with Celiac in 2012 and I believe my gut is in fine condition, but I have never tried a cleanse. Do you think this sebum build up is gut related? Do you have any advice for how I can get rid of the sebum waxy build up and dandruff forever? Thank you!!! Katie: I recently got some blood work done and my MCV and MCH were slightly elevated so I ran my B12 and folic acid test as well which came back normal. Should I be concerned? Savannah: Good morning! Thanks for your wonderful podcast! The past 10 years I have slowly been acquiring new symptoms. First started with fatigue (spent hours sleeping during the day) Then came painful body aches Now I have migraines & every few days some chest pains(my chest has been X-rayed & no heart problems) Eczema also. Chronic UTIs Chronic strep throat (getting my tonsils out soon) Constipation. Irregular mens cycle I am so tired and often in pain. I suffer from anxiety, depression & OCD. I always feel “on edge” & moody(not my personality). I have a lot of symptoms and don’t know where to start. I can’t afford hundreds of dollars worth of lab tests. If I could choose one which should I take? Thank you, hope I can find a place to start- feeling overwhelmed! Sinjin: Good morning Dr. Cabral, I am looking to further my education upon completion of IHP L2. I have lots of books lined up to read that are all geared towards the 7 branches of IHP, but seeking for hands on experience working under someone through either an internship or finding a mentor that can teach in person. In your opinion, off the top of your head, who/what/where would be your best recommendation for IHP’s to go and experience once becoming certified? I would love to be able to say I am mostly interested in just one healing method covered, but I truly enjoy them all. From personally putting to practice what the natural hygienists have taught, to learning how to read FM labs. I haven’t dove much into Hypnosis other than I have been listening to Psycho-Cybernetics while I sleep to see what happens. I would love to visit outside the US or HI to intern and learn but, I don’t know where to start! If you don’t mind could you give a few recommendations to myself and others out there seeking more experience as well as cultural submersion that will give us more skills to serve others. Thank you! Last time I wrote in was in the 500 episode, congrats on breaking the 1k! Lots of inspiration and guidance you and the team have provided along the way! Gracias! Claudio: appreciate all of the knowledge you share, and it’s great that you offer it free to the public. I recently completed the CBO protocol and I’m doing the CBO finisher now from equilibrium nutrition. This has completely healed my severe case of psoriasis, and has improved my digestion! However, my question is for my Father. He had a colonoscopy about 5 years ago. His doctor removed some polyps and found he had diverticulitis in his colon. Since then, he has tried to stay on a low fiber diet, avoid anything with seeds, and tried to avoid high lectin foods. For the past couple months he has been trying to eat healthier and incorporate more veggies into his diet. He recently completed the 21 day Dr. Cabral detox and felt great. However, he was constipated during the last week of the detox. He was eating a lot of dark leafy greens during this time. He decided to cut out the greens, in hopes of resolving his constipation issue. He continued a diet full of veggies, legumes, fish, poultry, and fruit smoothies (with berries). Upon completing the detox, he started the foundational protocol level 2, along with the activated b complex from equilibrium nutrition. The doctor said he could still have diverticulitis throughout his intestines. His mother had the same issue. He has suffered from constipation on and off throughout his life. Do you have any advice for his recovery? Also, do you think leaky gut and diverticulitis are related? Once his final surgery is complete, would starting the CBO protocol and sealing up his gut wall help to get rid of the diverticulitis and prevent perforation formation in the future? Any advice would help. I tried searching for diverticulitis on your podcast and found a brief mention on a house call. Thank you so much! Do you or your loved ones suffer from acne? When I was just 8yrs old, my first pimple appeared on my chin. Little did I know, it was the beginning of a 20yr sentence of what my dermatologist dubbed “stubborn acne”. Today, I will be talking about how to get rid of those nasty little bumps, without medication! Growing up, most people have some experience with acne, usually during the teenage years. Mine was a bit different. I saw my first pimple at just 8yrs old and it continued to be an issue for me until I was almost 30. Now, when I tell people I had horrible skin for 20yrs, they are amazed. Today, I have a clear, healthy, glowing, complexion. So, this is a subject that is close to my heart. First, I’ll talk about what acne is, what causes it, what doesn’t, and my top 3 tips for zapping those zits! So what is acne? Medical terminology defines acne as: A chronic, inflammatory skin condition that results in whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts, and nodules. While it is not dangerous, it can leave scars, certainly is annoying and can be embarrassing. Our skin has pores that connect to sebaceous glands under the skin. Sebaceous glands produce an oily liquid called sebum. Follicles connect the glands to the pores. Sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of the skin. Tiny hairs grow through the follicle out to the skin surface. Acne forms when these follicles become blocked and the oil from the sebaceous glands get trapped and built up under the skin. Acne is NOT the result of a lack of cleansing the skin. The pores do not get clogged from surface dirt. In fact, washing more frequently or scrubbing the skin can actually irritate pores and cause them to become clogged. As they used to say in Mary Kay: “your face is not a frying pan” so don’t scrub it. Be gentle, use your hands to wash and rinse your face 2x/day, and/or after workouts. Also, getting a sunburn does not help get rid of acne. I used to like a little sunburn in the summer when I had bad acne, because it momentarily dried up my skin a bit and the redness kind of helped to camouflage the blemishes. But, it didn’t take too long for the skin to react, trying to heal itself again. Dry, damaged skin causes sebaceous glands to produce even more oil and hence: more acne. The same reaction happens when you use a soap that leaves you with that tight, dry feeling. While it’s a nice reprieve from the excessive oil and shine that is often accompanied by acne prone skin, the dryness once again signals the sebaceous glands that it needs more oil - and here we go again. So what can you do? I will leave a more extensive list of treatments and tips on my website, supersimplehealthy.com/downloads. But here are my top 3 tips: 1) Drink a cup of "Skin Detox" tea (made by Yogi). It has awesome organic herbs that detox the liver like burdock, red clover and honeybush leaf. The liver is the major site where the body filters out toxins. This "Skin Detox" tea is caffeinated so better to drink in the morning than at night. Look for it in the natural or organic section of your grocery store. 2) Eat less dairy. Dairy products have been known to increase the production of sebum. The hormone IGF-1 found in milk has been linked to acne because it chronically stimulates sebaceous glands. So, try cutting dairy out for a month or two and see what happens. You can substitute almond or coconut milk products and get your recommended calcium through other nuts, seeds, and omega 3 rich fish like salmon. I hope that was helpful. Look for the more extensive list on my website at www.supersimplehealthy.com/downloads. And feel free to comment and share this episode or others the first place.with your friends and family.
- Metiiiiiiiin.... Kime diyorum ben! Gel, çabuk kahvaltını yap. - Tamaaaam anneee. (of!) - Nerdesin sen? Hemen gel buraya. Servisin gelecek şimdi! - Banyodayııım. Geliyorum şimdiii. (of! of! of!) 15 yaşında genç bir çocuk olan Metin'in banyoda bu kadar uzun kalmasının sebebi, yapmakta olduğu cerrahi müdahaleler. Metin'in son 1 aydır, başta yüzü olmak üzere birçok yerinde kırmızı kırmızı noktalar oluşmaya başladı. Her gün yenileri çıkıyor. Yanaklarında, çenesinde ve hatta burnunun tam ucunda... İşte Metin'i banyoya hapseden şey burnunda çıkan o kırmızı nokta. Dilerseniz biraz daha geriye, Metin'in ilk sivilcelerinin çıkmaya başladığı günlere dönelim. Bakalım, Metin'in vücudundaki hangi değişiklikler, bu kırmızı noktalara neden olmuş.
