Sometimes a horror film is called a “comedy.” But usually they are actually dark comedies, or simply dark drama. Well, the 2022 film THE MENU most certainly has some dark humor in it, but it is definitely a horror film through and through. With its exaggerated caricatures of those in certain social statuses, people are going to get a chuckle. But all in all, the frights do come through.A well known chef has opened up an exclusive restaurant on a remote island. Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) has been invited to a private dinner there by her boyfriend. The restaurant is filled with various folks from the upper class, new money and old. When Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) begins to serve each course, he brings a story with the food that is specific to each of the attendees. A quiet dinner turns out to be much more. The film is directed by Mark Mylod based on the script by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy. Starring Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy, the movie's cast also includes Nicholas Hoult and John Leguizamo. Having received a theatrical release, the film has garnered fine reviews by both reviewers and audiences members alike. Your co-hosts take a look at this commentary on the class system and people behaving badly and give their thoughts.

Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) has been swapped in as Tyler's (Nicholas Hoult) last minute plus one, much to Chef's dismay as her appearance has disrupted the proceedings of the planned evening. Writer Will Tracy, who counts shows like “Last Week Tonight” and “Succession” among his credits on IMDB, was on his honeymoon in Norway when he started exploring the best options for dinner as a certified foodie. What he discovered was a private dining location on an island where a boat was required to pick you up and drop you off for a five-hour experience where the chef and staff prepared an elaborate meal for an exclusive set of clientele. That was all the inspiration Tracy needed to return to New York and seek out his friend Seth Reiss to explore transforming this idea into an actual film that dissected the elite world of overpriced gourmet food. During the writing process, Tracy and Reiss actually started imagining Ralph Fiennes in the lead role as the eccentric chef that sits at the center of their dark-horror comedy but the pair were even more stunned when the actor actually agreed to do the part. The finished product centers around a group of 1-percenters who pay to have the ultimate eating experience on a private island with a world class chef but they soon find out that what they're being fed is far more bitter than any dish that's being served…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to clear our palettes and try to figure out the theme for the evening as we review the 2022 film “The Menu”…

Welcome to Right on Cue, the podcast where we interview film, TV, and video game composers about the origins and nuances of their latest works. It's hard to think of a more overt lens through which to satirize the divisions of class more than through food: Fast food vs. haute cuisine, Michelin stars over star-shaped chicken nuggets. Mark Mylod's The Menu is a sizzling satire of the snootiness of fine dining, and the class conflicts it unfurls. Set on a remote island that's home to one of the most exclusive restaurants in the world, The Menu treats us to a multi-course prix fixe of mayhem centered around high-profile chef Julian Slowik (a beautifully ostentatious Ralph Fiennes). But as the eclectic group of well-off diners sample one conceptually-minded meal after another, it becomes clear there's more than meets the eye for Chef Slowick's menu. Accompanying each course of the menu Mylod, his cast, and screenwriters Seth Reiss and Will Tracy have set out for us is a cheekily propulsive score courtesy of Hereditary composer Colin Stetson. He lays out ornate soundscapes and unusual instruments (glasses played with chopsticks, pans as percussion) with the same perverse mirth as Fiennes' devilish chef, granting each course, and each sick joke on Chef Slowik's guests, a unique voice. And all throughout lays an arch counterpoint to the kind of chamber-music regalness we aesthetically associate with fine dining. It's a pleasure to welcome Colin Stetson to the podcast to talk about all these ideas and more. You can find Colin Stetson at his official website here. The Menu is currently playing in theaters. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Milan Records.
"The Menu" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and is now playing in theaters from Searchlight Pictures. The film stars an ensemble cast of characters played by Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo, among others, who dine at the fine cuisine restaurant of world-renowned chef Julian Slowik, played by Ralph Fiennes. The evening takes a deadly turn for the worse, and the mind games from Chef and his right-hand woman, Elsa, played by Hong Chau, continue in a torturous evening for the guests. Hong Chau was kind enough to spend some time talking with me about her work in the film along with what the last year has been like, also working on Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" and Kelly Reichardt's "Showing Up." I also had the pleasure of speaking with the screenwriters Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, plus director Mark Mylod. Each conversation reveals another layer to the brilliant inner workings of what makes "The Menu" such a full-course meal, but please be warned, SPOILERS are ahead. Enjoy!
