This week, the boys pull up their dacks, lace up their blunnies, pull over their cardies, eat a bikkie, grab a tinny, and lob in for the Ridgy Didge himself, Baz Luhrmann's first feature film, “Strictly Ballroom”. After Jeff gives a quick mini-review of “Mission: Impossible— The Final Reckoning”, our native Aussie and gutless wonder, Dave, knackered from a good hissy at his lappy, guides us through this absolute hooley dooley. The Mission:Impossible movies started in 1996 with Tom Cruise playing Ethan Hunt for the first time. Now 29 years later, we might be getting the last Mission:Impossible movie with “Mission:Impossible The Final Reckoning.” We were left with a cliffhanger in the last Mission:Impossible movie, so we'll perhaps get the conclusion we're looking for. Is it worth going to the theater to see if we do? Check out this episode to find out! “Mission:Impossible The Final Reckoning” also stars Ving Rhames, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Holt McAllany, Janet McTeer, Angela Bassett and Nick Offerman. Here we are! Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt for his final(?) adventure with his IMF crew. Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise's latest team up - Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning - has now arrived in theaters, and is, of course, the second part of the Dead Reckoning saga of this franchise. As I've said before, Mission: Impossible is probably my favorite movie franchise of all-time. That answer has likely come about due to a number of my other favorite franchises diluting themselves over the last number of years, but Tom Cruise just knows how to deliver a kick-ass time at the movies. He's done so again, and again, and again, so consistently over the last decade, even outside the Mission franchise. That being said, Dead Reckoning was an interesting specimen. I loved it on first watch but that movie did not do very well at the box office, which was extra surprising considering it was riding the tremendous wave of Top Gun: Maverick's success the year prior. On successive rewatches, I myself have grown to have a number of issues with that movie but still find it to be an incredibly satisfying action movie. It's certainly still better than most other action movies you've seen in theaters since that film, largely because of Tom Cruise's endless dedication to risk his life... for our entertainment of all things. But, can Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning overcome the story shortcomings of its predecessor to close out Tom Cruise's run as Ethan Hunt with his most memorable ride yet? Find out in this SPOILER-FREE review!Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning:Directed by: Christopher McQuarrieWritten by: Christopher McQuarrie & Erik JendresenBased on the television series created by: Bruce GellerProduced by: Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrieExecutive Producers: David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Chris BrockMusic by: Max Aruj, Alfie GodfreyCinematography by: Fraser TaggartEdited by: Eddie HamiltonCasting by: Mindy MarinProduction Design by: Gary FreemanCostume Design by: Jill TaylorCast: Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Mariela Garriga, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Tramell Tillman, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell and Angela BassettSynopsis: Ethan Hunt and the IMF team continue their search for the terrifying AI known as the Entity — which has infiltrated intelligence networks all over the globe — with the world's governments and a mysterious ghost from Ethan's past on their trail. Joined by new allies and armed with the means to shut the Entity down for good, Hunt is in a race against time to prevent the world as we know it from changing forever.

The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom
Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss some of the major castings that HBO recently confirmed. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 2:17 Still nothing on the trio? We've already heard a lot surrounding other characters, and now we have confirmed other casting. But the series revolves around Harry, Ron, and Hermione, not these others. They are still important, but why would HBO cast the trio last? Perhaps they are going to dive into the past more…· 9:38 More past? If we have castings of characters that have an important role in the past events of the story, that might mean that the filmmakers are going to give us more of that backstory. Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Snape are some of the most important people for the lore of Harry Potter. That must mean something.· 16:29 These choices are overall good. They all have the look and their interviews and previous roles are in support of their choices. My only worry is with Paapa Essiedu. He has a very active energy that could be put to good use, but thinking of Snape, energetic doesn't come to mind. Alan Rickman portrayed a very cool and stoic Snape to a perfect degree. I don't want to put Essiedu in a box, but that portrayal is going to be hard to top.· 23:45 I want Voldemort! There have been no whispers about who he might be, other than perhaps Cillian Murphy which will probably not come to pass. He is the center of the conflict of the story and the one who drives it forward. Without him, there is little to be had when it comes to backstory and plot. We should be afraid of him. He should be a deadly calm that breaks into madness. When will we find an actor like that?Having anything you want to hear or say? Click here for a voice submission or here for text. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesMarvel Studios kickoffs of the summer blockbuster season in just 2 weeks with the release of Thunderbolts* on May 2. With tickets now on sale, box office tracking and projections ahead of the film's release are forecasting a solid, if not somewhat soft, opening weekend; with most estimates landing between $63 to $77 million. While that is on the lower side for an MCU movie, optimists believe the general lower level of familiarity with the characters on the roster, combined with the positive test screenings, could give the film significant potential and room to grow in subsequent weeks via word of mouth. Elsewhere, Captain America actor Anthony Mackie offered some insights on Avengers: Doomsday while promoting Twisted Metal Season 2 for Peacock, saying, “It's going to give the audience that old Marvel feeling that they always had.”The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the introduction of a new Oscar category for Achievement in Stunt Design, set to debut at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, honoring films released in 2027. This decision follows years of advocacy from industry professionals, including director and former stuntman David Leitch and stunt coordinator Chris O'Hara, who was notably credited as the first official "stunt designer" for his work on The Fall Guy. While the specific criteria and presentation details are yet to be finalized, this move is seen as a significant step toward recognizing the creative and technical artistry of stunt professionals in filmmaking. However, there is notable disappointment that earlier works, such as Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible series, will not be eligible for this new recognition.HBO has officially announced the adult cast for its upcoming Harry Potter TV series, confirming several roles and actors we've discussed, along with new additions. John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer is cast as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu takes on Severus Snape, and Nick Frost will play Rubeus Hagrid. Additionally, Luke Thallon has been cast as Professor Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse will portray Argus Filch. Casting for the central trio—Harry, Ron, and Hermione—is still underway, with over 32,000 children auditioning for these iconic roles. In an interview with Deadline, Warner Bros' Mike De Luca and Pam Abby confirmed that the studio is moving forward with sequels to A Minecraft Movie and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. This weekend, A Minecraft Movie crossed a half a billion dollars at the global box office.A24 has released the first trailer for Ari Aster's Eddington, which stars Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone. The film will premiere next month at the Cannes Film Festival and then will release in theaters on July 18th.Comedian Nate Bargatze will host the 77th annual Emmy awards which will be held on September 14th The Last of Us season 2 debuted to 5.3 million viewers, a 13% increase from the season 1 premiere.Insider Jeff Sneider is reporting that a remake of the 1988 horror cult classic Killer Klowns From Outer Space is in the works at MGM with Ryan Gosling attached to produce. This scoop is currently unconfirmed at this time.Jurassic Park star Sam Neill has joined the cast of the upcoming Godzilla x Kong monsterverse sequel which will be directed by Grant Sputore.Ahead of Star Wars Celebration this weekend, a new Darth Vader novel titled Master of Evil from author Adam Christopher has been announced which will release on November 11th.

British actor and comedian Nick Frost is reportedly in final talks to play Rubeus Hagrid in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series, a decade-long adaptation of J.K. Rowling's bestselling fantasy novels. Frost, known for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, would step into the iconic role originally portrayed by Robbie Coltrane. While HBO has yet to officially confirm the casting, Frost's cryptic Instagram post and recent social media activity have fueled fan speculation. The high-profile series is being helmed by His Dark Materials writer Francesca Gardiner and Succession director Mark Mylod, and will feature a new cast including John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, and Paapa Essiedu. If confirmed, Frost's casting would bring heartfelt humor and warmth to the beloved Hogwarts character, making him a standout choice for a new generation of fans. Keywords: Nick Frost Hagrid, HBO Harry Potter series, Harry Potter TV show cast, new Hagrid actor, HBO fantasy series, Robbie Coltrane Hagrid, Francesca Gardiner, Mark Mylod Harry Potter, decade-long Harry Potter reboot.

This episode will conclude our series on Hannah Arendt's last book. Unlike Hannah Arendt, who passed before she could finish her book, we will conclude the series on Life Of The Mind. Look for some archival footage and other surprises in the episode. While I am sad to see this series go, I am anticipating a good, deep dive when we enter the world of Annie Dillard's An American Childhood in September. We look forward to seeing you all in the chat and have some surprises to share! More on this special, multi part series, here: Book Lunch: Series: Hannah Arendt's “The Life Of The Mind” Hannah Arendt's The Life Of The Mind is the last published work from Arendt. It is unfinished as it was to be in three volumes titled according to what were for her the three parts of all human mental activity: Thinking, Willing and Judging. We only have Thinking and Willing, finally published in 1977. Mary McCarthy, one of Arendt's closest friends (and author of the famous The Group) was the editor of this unfinished masterpiece. Accordingly, I will not only discuss Arendt'a text but the work of McCarthy as well, the meaning and significance of their friendship. (I might even discuss Nora Ephron and read from McCarthy's fiction. We shall see) I will have some help from a discussion of Margarethe von Trotta's biopic Hannah Arendt, (starring Barbara Sukowa and Janet McTeer) including judicious clips throughout the series. Although I have been reading and studying Hannah Arendt for close to forty years, as I have changed over the decades in both my political and other views, so has my relationship with her as an author. Throughout all of this my estimation of her has never been without a great deal of love. The method I will use will be a variation of the "close reading" one in which I was trained and I have actually used to discuss practically everything I have covered on this podcast. Joan Didion was trained in this same method and she claimed it made her both a better writer as well as politically savvy even though it is primarily an aesthetic method. My interest in this series will be less in trying to evaluate Arendt in terms of whether she is ultimately "correct" or not but in terms of what it means for her to have written and thought in the way that she did. As will hopefully be clear, I see The Life Of The Mind an aesthetic work of imaginative prose that happens to be non-fiction, with the language and terminology of philosophical and theological traditions. #hannaharendtcenter #bardcollege #germany #shoah #holocaust #democracy #totalitarianism #ww2 #nyc #judaism #plato #philosophy #kant #christianity #psychology #newschool #columbia #augustine #socrates #plato #fascism #communism #marxism #politics #rogerberkowitz #samantharosehill #marymccarthy #edmundwilson #brooksbrothers #sidneylumet #1930s #1940s #1950s #1960s #1970s #candicebergen #thegroup #lillianhellman #dickcavett #noraephron #janetmcteer #barbarasukowa #hansmorgenthau #newyorker #newyorktimes #margarethevontrotta #newgermancinema --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/support
The sixth episode of our series on Hannah Arendt's Life Of The Mind continues with the discussion of volume 2, Willing, in which religious intellectual history is discussed as well as much else! Season 6 , “Book Lunch”, Hannah Arendt's The Life Of The Mind, Volume 2, “Willing” This, the fifth episode of our miniseries on Hannah Arendt's The Life Of The Mind, will mark the beginning of our discussion of Volume 2, Willing. This is a significant moment, of course, for our series as well as Arendt's text in general. I anticipate that we will need an additional episode after this one - as I hope to give, as best as I can, equal amount of attention to both volumes. Hello, we'd like to order one black comedy done well, please. This week, The Menu (2022) is what's on the menu for Spooky Tuesday, and we're breaking down the stunt casting that might've been, the cannibalism that should've been, and the iconic line-reading of the word “tortillas” that definitely was. "The Menu" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and is now playing in theaters from Searchlight Pictures. The film stars an ensemble cast of characters played by Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo, among others, who dine at the fine cuisine restaurant of world-renowned chef Julian Slowik, played by Ralph Fiennes. The evening takes a deadly turn for the worse, and the mind games from Chef and his right-hand woman, Elsa, played by Hong Chau, continue in a torturous evening for the guests. Hong Chau was kind enough to spend some time talking with me about her work in the film along with what the last year has been like, also working on Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" and Kelly Reichardt's "Showing Up." I also had the pleasure of speaking with the screenwriters Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, plus director Mark Mylod. Each conversation reveals another layer to the brilliant inner workings of what makes "The Menu" such a full-course meal, but please be warned, SPOILERS are ahead. Enjoy! Kriss and Ro review The Menu. This horror/thriller/comedy is a fantastic watch. There is a lot of social commentary in this film but it's not done in a heavy handed way. It's very smart and timely. The acting in this film is fantastic. The best moments in this film go from horror to comedy back to horror seamlessly. Listen as we review this film (spoiler-free). Like what you hear?
