(including me, even though I know I shouldn't use that word!).But what IS a picky eater, really?Did you know:Only about 1/3 of kids are actually picky, although 50% struggle age 2-3.Only about 25% of kids outgrow it.5-10% are problem feeders and need professional help.Dr. Kay Toomey explains how parents can determine if their "severity" meter is accurate when it comes to their kids eating. Do you have a problem feeder who is truly extreme? Or just a picky eater? These questions will help you determine! And the craziest part -- it might not all be in your child's head, even if they are having trouble accepting a wide variety of foods. It turns out that what matters is how much it takes to chew, physically, and what food feels/looks/tastes/sounds like etc. to the child. Some picky eaters just never learned to chew properly! :o #mindblownHere you'll get help understanding WHY your kids are so wiggly at dinner, the special chair that could make all the difference, and more practical tips and picky eater solutions.According to Dr. Toomey, it takes real intentionality to help your kids expand their palates — most kids won't just “grow out of it” like we secretly hope! From the extra little plate you'll now set on the table to the way in which food is served, to your rules about who moves (the food or the kid), your routines are about to be turned upside down! In today's episode I speak with Virginia Sole-Smith, author of the new book Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture. We explore anti-fat bias and fat phobia, and how weight, health and beauty have gotten tangled up with notions of morality. Virginia explains how (and why) our culture has become so afraid of fat, and how this fat phobia has resulted in real systems of oppression where humans are valued according to their weight. Virginia explores what it means to be healthy, and the fallacy of linking weight to health. We talk about diet culture and how restriction just doesn't work, and Virginia offers real tips on how we can start to change the system and gain body autonomy. We also talk about feeding our kids, and how we can raise children who have body autonomy. She offers tips for teaching our kids that their bodies belong to them and that all bodies are equal. This episode is so expanding, whether or not you have children. The Suburban Women Problem
Feeding Kids Is A No-Brainer (with Admiral Rachel Levine and Hunger Free CO)

Today, we're talking about hunger and school lunch. Right wing extremists want to distract us, but what's more damaging to a kid's health and education... the gender of one of their friends, or going hungry?  Free school lunches are so important to make sure that students are fed, healthy, and ready to learn. Feeding kids shouldn't be a partisan issue - in fact, as Jasmine says, it should be a no-brainer.So this week, we are so excited to chat with Marc Jacobson and Ellie Agar from Hunger Free Colorado. They helped write Proposition FF to provide every student in Colorado a free school lunch. Marc and Ellie share how that ballot measure came about, how prevalent the issue of hunger really is, and how we can talk to our friends and neighbors about the issue. And after that, Amanda sits down with Admiral Rachel Levine, the Assistant Secretary for Health with the Department of Health and Human Services. She also happens to be our nation's first openly transgender four-star officer and the first to be confirmed to an appointment by the Senate. Amanda and Admiral Levine talk about the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, the difference between food insecurity and nutrition insecurity, and how her identity as a transgender woman isn't her weakness - it's her superpower. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to museums, making connections and building community, and the people of Wisconsin in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”We invite you to join us for a virtual Troublemaker Training on Thursday April 13th to hear more about the work that school boards do, and again on Thursday April 20th to learn how you can speak out a school board meeting like a pro. Is scratch cooking really all it's cracked up to be? In this episode, Jane and Liz challenge the idea that society's ills can be solved by each of us spending more time in the kitchen, sing the praises of convenience food, and talk to the authors of the 2019 book Pressure Cooker: Why Home Cooking Won't Solve Our Problems, and What We Can Do About It. The hosts close out the show by sharing the dinner shortcuts they love.  As promised, here are Pressure Cooker's picks for time-savers you can feel good about. Heat and Eat  Talia Di Napoli Frozen Pizza: Crust that tastes like a wood-burning pizza joint and sauce that tastes like sunshine. Available retail and online; $13 to $15 per pizza.  Trader Joe's Cheese and Green Chili Tamale: Made for the microwave and not too spicy for the kids. $3.79 for two. Trader Joe's Black Bean and Jack Cheese Burrito: The antithesis of the sad desk lunch burrito. Perfect from the toaster oven and big enough for two small kids.  $3.99  Jaju Pierogis: The Polish know kids. Dough + potatoes and cheese is a hit. Add some raw veg and you're done. $10 for 12. Pasta Sauce  Rao's Marinara Sauce: Yes, it's cheaper to make your own but this is better and fast. Look for it at Costco or Aldi for a price break, from 5.99 for 24 ounces.  Good and Gather Organic Marinara Sauce, Target's affordable no-sugar option, $2.79 for 24 ounces. Dump & Stir  OmSom: Think of these packets as authentically spiced flavor bombs, allowing you to make restaurant-quality Asian dishes in 15 minutes, Available online or retail; three packets (six servings) for $12.  Maya Kaimal: There are a zillion simmer sauces but Maya Kaimal's are the OG. Most kids will dig the mild creamy Butter Masala. $5.  Haven's Kitchen: Great flavors in resealable squeezy pouches. We love the golden turmeric tahini and the chimichurri. $6.99 per 5-ounce pouch. Rice, Noodles, Dumplings Birdsye Frozen Rice: The fastest way to get a healthy grain on the table. $2.50 per 10-ounce bag.  Momofuku Ramen: An upgrade on the dorm-room fave with air-dried noodles and a tasty spice packet.  5-pack starting at $12. MìLà (formerly Xio Chi Jie) Pork Soup Dumplings: As good as a restaurant. Seriously! And so fun for kids. $40 for 50 dumplings.   Trader Joe's Pork and Ginger Soup Dumplings: Affordable and delicious is possible. $6 for $3.79. What are your faves? Let us know @pressurecook_fm

Did you know that one third of children in schools in Montgomery County are on the free or reduced lunch program? This number is shocking to see anywhere, but more so when referring to a county that is seemingly more affluent. This just goes to show that no one is immune to food insecurity, regardless of what a situation may appear as.This is why our guest on today's episode founded KIND to ensure that children facing food insecurity have meals when they go home. Jeremy Lichtenstein has teamed up with his community to purchase, pack, and distribute meals by sending kids home on Friday with a backpack full of meals so they don't go hungry over the weekend.KIND's operation is smooth and efficient, allowing for the most bags to be packed in the shortest amount of time, 115,000 food items in 30 minutes to be exact, and every dollar raised goes directly toward purchasing food for these children.Tune in to hear how this organization has made a huge difference in the Montgomery County area and how they want to continue their efforts to provide consistent aid for underprivileged schools and children. You don't want to miss this one!Connect with KIND:WebsiteFacebookInstagramTwitterConnect with Jamie at Truman Charities:FacebookInstagramLinkedInWebsiteYouTubeEmail: info@trumancharities.comThis episode was post produced by Podcast Boutique https://podcastboutique.com/

Very low CGM numbers with keto diet [7:47] Krista says: Hi Robb & Nikki! Love all the work you guys are doing!! LOVE Scared Cow!!! I'm a 44 year-old women who started a keto diet in November to combate 15lbs of hormonal weight gain (a really stressful 5 years threw everything off despite eating very clean, working out, prioritizing sleep, etc). I lost about 8lbs right out the gates and a few lbs are still coming off very slowly. At the start of my keto journey I also discovered I have a histamine intolerance (long Covid???) and have modified my diet and done all the things to limit my histamines. My histamines have slowly but surely decreased but still not totally in the clear. With all that being said, I've been using a CGM to look at how my body interperts food for a while now (even before my keto diet) and my sugars have always been low (average around 90) but the numbers did increase with my histamines but now that my histamines are more under control my numbers are back to normal....super steady and never going above 110 unless during workouts. Finally my question....in the last 4 days my cgm numbers have gone super low!!! I'm averaging 65. I still feel completely normal (this is not a new cgm) and am sleeping normal despite it going into the 40's. Nothing has changed in my life or diet My daily macros....1800ish calories 100ish grams of protein, 40ish grams of carbs and the rest fat. I weigh about 135 and all my hormone levels are back to normal (I work with a NaturoPath). My only thought is as my histamines continue to decrease is this my new normal in ketosis or ????? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! 2. Kids and food [14:33] Sydney says: I'd love to hear your approach to feeding your children at home and outside of the home (with grandparents, vacations, birthday parties, etc.). And how has that changed as they've grown? We've been able to just stick with our preferred food for the most part since they've been so little, but we are encountering more and more occasions where there are things offered that we wouldn't usually let them eat in a million years! And we say no…but it doesn't always sit quite right! Thoughts? Not so much worried about offending others…more so thinning about the ideas and beliefs we are instilling in them around nutrition. 3. Coffee Enemas [24:38] Doug says Robb: I've been a huge fan of yours for years. Thank you for all your content and all you do. I especially appreciate your integrity and truthfulness on all subjects. I have a family member who is trying to cure eczema with an elimination diet. What remains is mostly meat, fish, a limited selection of fruit along with a little bit of white rice. This person is lean, strong and very healthy, but has recently suffered painful outbreaks of eczema. The “guru“ we are following and doing this elimination diet recommends coffee enemas. Unfortunately, despite The enthusiasm of this guru, and many others on the inter-webzs, there is a surprising paucity of information on them out there. The closest thing to a theoretical explanation is that a vein in the colon leads right the liver and the caffeine/coffee stimulates the liver to pump out Lots of bile, with which aids in cleansing and flushing. I know, I know, cleansing and flushing and detoxes are mostly bullshit. But anecdotally, people seem to really love these coffee enemas. What's the truth?
