When Australian Rules footballer Heather Anderson died by suicide last year (in 2022), her family donated her brain to the Australian Sports Brain Bank, hoping to better understand her death. Because of that, a team of Australian researchers recently said that they've made the world's first diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, in a professional female athlete. As research into CTE linked to contact sports continues to grow, this has led to calls for better concussion protocols to protect players in these various sports. To find out more about CTE as well as the gender disparity in research, we speak to Assoc Prof Dr Michael Buckland. He's a neuropathologist as well as the founder and director of the Australian Sports Brain Bank. Image Credit: Shutterstock

Guest: Tiffany C. Gurley-Nettles, Ph.D., CCC-SLP - This course explores neuropsychology to understand behavior as it relates to the brain and the influences of illnesses or brain injuries on behavior and cognitive functions. Dr. Gurley-Nettles discusses how brain injury and behavioral and emotional changes emerge from the injury itself, the distress from adapting to the changes following the TBI, or a combination of the two. She highlights how clinical neuropsychologists have been instrumental clinically and scientifically in the identification of problems, signs, and symptoms of sports-related head injuries. Additionally, she addresses their involvement in the areas of effective treatment plans following the cognitive and behavioral assessment, as well as the facilitation of recovery monitoring, returning to sports, school, and community reentry.

Impulsivity and distractibility seen in some kids who learn and think differently puts them at greater risk for injuries and accidents, including head injuries. Now that sports games and practices are back in action following pandemic cancellations, it is important to talk about these risks and what to do to support kids who experience concussions. Today's guest, Dr. Talin Babikian, explains concussions, which are mild traumatic brain injuries. She also shares with us what to look for in the event of an injury. There are many mental health challenges and environmental stressors related to head injuries, and Dr. Babikian inspires us to focus on what we can control - being the caring adult that a struggling child can connect with.   Show Notes: [2:51] - This topic is something Dr. Babikian is very passionate about. [3:49] - Most concussions in children happen while playing recreational sports. Dr. Babikian explains what a traumatic brain injury is. [5:14] - Our physiology is designed to be able to handle some brain movement within the skull.  There are different levels of brain injury. [6:57] - Most of the time, kids will fully recover from mild brain injuries, but they should all be taken seriously. [9:00] - Dr. Babikian shares what symptoms to look for, mainly changes in behavior. [11:40] - Helmets are incredibly important, but they give people a false sense of security because they don't prevent concussions. [13:08] - Brain scans are not tools to detect concussions. [14:38] - There is a window of time that doctors look for in which kids should recover from a concussion. There are chronic symptoms that could happen past that window. [17:01] - There are different paths to recovery for each child. [18:12] - Anxiety can be concerning after concussions. [19:56] - Kids with ADHD tend to be more likely to have accidents that could result in concussions. [22:01] - Some kids show symptoms of ADHD after a head injury. [24:40] - There will be a level of emotional response to the injury as well as seeing emotional changes as a result of the injury. [26:30] - Caregiving, peer interactions, mentorships, and other environmental factors make a huge difference in moving forward. [27:51] - Dr. Babikian discusses mental health risk factors in youth. [30:29] - Dr. Babikian shares a story from early in her career that shows the importance of having a connection with a caring adult. [33:40] - There are many things we can't change, but we can offer the connection children truly need.   About Our Guest: Dr. Talin Babikian is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist with over 16 years of experience in both private practice and academic settings working with a broad spectrum of children and young adults, and their families. She is Associate Clinical Professor in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Associate Director of BrainSPORT at UCLA, an inter-departmental and multi-disciplinary program for identifying and treating brain injuries — including concussions — in youth and professional athletes, where she oversees the Sports Neuropsychology Fellowship training program. Dr. Babikian earned a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Neuropsychology from Loma Linda University in 2005. She completed a combined research/clinical postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology at the UCLA School of Medicine, specializing in general pediatric neuropsychology and a research focus in brain injuries in youth. Dr. Babikian is actively involved in research using novel neuroimaging techniques to understand neurocognitive outcomes and the course of repair and recovery following a brain injury in childhood. She has authored and presented several publications on this topic in journals, book chapters, and professional seminars nationally and internationally.   Connect with Dr. Talin Babikian: Dr. Babikian's Website Phone: 310-855-4552   Links and Related Resources: Navigating Brain Injuries Including Concussions in Children and Adolescents: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers A Bang to the Brain Recovery Time for Sports Concussions   Join our email list so that you can receive information about upcoming webinars - ChildNEXUS.com The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. We have no idea what the fruit of the growing body of research on concussions among kids will lead, but we do know that parents, coaches, schools, and community athletic groups need to be more diligent in prevention and treatment. Gone are the days when a kid who suffers a severe blow to the head needs to shake it off and get back in there. New research from the University of Michigan School of Nursing tracked nearly fifty-three-thousand students in grades eight, ten, and twelve. They found that self-reported concussions rose from 2016 to 2020. Specifically, in 2016 nineteen-point-five percent of kids reported experiencing at least one concussion. By 2020 that number had risen to twenty-four-point-six percent of kids. There was no increase among kids who do not participate in sports. The increase was seen among our sports-playing kids. Parents, concussion injuries do both short and long-term damage. Keep an eye your kids in ways that prepare them for a life-time of healthy living.

Join host Amy Zellmer as she speaks with Dr. Alison Alford. I was born and raised in Lancaster, PA.  I attended undergraduate at University of Miami obtaining a BS in Psychobiology.  I then attend Jefferson Medical College back in Philadelphia, PA.  Once I graduated, I did my residency and fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 2012 I became a board-certified Child Neurologist.  I had a strong interest in headaches and studied to obtain my second board in Headache Medicine in 2013.  I have become the only board-certified Pediatric Headache Medicine Specialist in Virginia.  I would see a fair amount of post-concussion syndromes for their headache management.  However, in 2016 one of our concussion clinics lost their primary physician.  I, personally was not a fan of the way other clinics were run, so I decided to start managing more of the concussion symptoms myself.  I pride myself and my clinic on bringing the relationship back into medicine and I felt that needed to happen with concussion/TBI patients as well.  So many people do not understand the far reaches of a TBI and how much disability it can cause.  So, I felt this was very important to protect this patient population and provide the best care possible.  I was also asked to join the board of directors for the Brain Injury Association of Virginia.  I have learned so much about the need for even more resources for TBI in Virginia.  This has made me all the more passionate about getting these patients what they need.  I live in Richmond with my husband of 13 years.  We have two young children and a loving Golden Retriever.   Sponsored by: Minnesota Functional Neurology, DC

[60:22] - Helen talks about her new book, Sports Concussions and Getting Back in the Game of Life, and how much of it deals with each of several various topics. Get Optimized! Try reading for an hour. Assess whether you get sleepy or feel like you’re getting a headache. If so, you may have Irlen Syndrome. During your hour of reading, pay attention to how the experience changes. Irlen Syndrome may lead to your reading getting slower or choppier as the session goes on. Make a list of visual factors that affect you. For example, are you bothered by bright light, fluorescent lights, or high contrast in text? A concussion is an injury that afflicts two million people in the U.S. each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Today, new brain imaging tools are revealing how concussions, which result from a blow to the head that causes the brain to move inside the skull cavity, are more serious than previously thought, producing actual damage to the brain's intricate network of wires that connect key regions of mental activity.
