"Probes: Deep Sea Diving into St. John's Gospel" is a beautiful union of Scripture Study and the prayer experience of Lectio Divina. I've never seen anything quite like it (and I hope I see more). What the reader will find is that diving deeper is actually climbing higher. Under Dr. Kreeft's guidance, we learn to ask penetrating questions of Sacred Scripture, but more importantly, we learn to listen to the Word for the answers. Designed for community study or individual reflection, this is the "John" book I have been waiting for! Thank you once again Dr. Kreeft! It's an underlying skill that we really have to harness in all of our college, university, and high school programs. It's fundamental. We seem to teach people how to problem solve, but this is table stakes. In order to ever get AI right, we've got to solve the data challenges.”“There's no question on whether business value and how to measure AI's return on investment (ROI) is always top of mind in my discussions with executives. But what they really want to know is if their existing ROI methods are sufficient or not. What are the new metrics that they need to put in place to validate AI and its sustainability?”“We're not at the high-growth stage of AI innovation. We're in the early experimentation stage. We don't have international guardrails. All of these systems are going to take around 20-years to put in place. It takes six years to put a new university curriculum in place. People have to take responsibility to learn. This is a fundamental shift and it's one that's happening at break lightning speed.”Mentions:Mood InsightsGallup Research: 1 in 5 Employees Feel Lonely Worldwide KFF Loneliness and Support Networks Survey United States Artificial Intelligence Institute Dr. Cindy Gordon's AI Insights NewsletterHispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement and SalesChoice Whitepaper: Why Diversity Equity and Inclusion Leaders Must Lead in AIBio: Dr. Cindy Gordon ICD.D. is the CEO of SalesChoice, a SaaS AI company focused on Ending Growth Uncertainty for Human Advantage, and has been recognized by Onalytica as one of the top AI global influencers. Key Takeaways: [1:17] Ryan Piansky and co-host Holly Knotowicz introduce the topic, artificial intelligence and patient education, and their guest, Dr. Corey Ketchem, a third-year Gastroenterology Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. [1:30] Dr. Corey Ketchem has an interest in allergic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, particularly eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases (EGIDs), as well as artificial intelligence and epidemiologic studies. [2:01] Dr. Ketchem did his residency at the University of Pennsylvania following medical school. There he met Dr. Evan Dellon, a world expert in EoE. Dr. Dellon became a mentor to Dr. Ketchem. [2:24] As Dr. Ketchem learned more about EoE, he was fascinated by the many unknowns and opportunities for discovery within the eosinophilic GI field. He wanted to make an impact on patient care. [2:51] Under Dr. Dellon's mentorship, he did epidemiologic studies. Seeking specialized training, he ended up at the University of Pennsylvania where he is getting rigorous training in epidemiology to study EGIDs. [3:18] As ChatGPT was gaining its buzz, Dr. Ketchem saw a lot of clinical applicability. He views AI as an asset in epidemiology and hopes to use it to accelerate his research. [4:30] AI usually references using computers to mimic human abilities, estimate decisions, or predict outcomes. An example is Natural Language Processing (NLP), to analyze and understand human language. Large Language Models (LLM) use NLP. [5:08] ChatGPT is based on a LLM. LLMs use NLP techniques to understand vast amounts of text that they are trained on and generate responses in a chat format. [5:25] Machine learning is another subset of AI that uses statistical techniques to give computers the ability to learn with the data and predict outcomes. [5:50] The hope is to use these AI techniques to speed up discovery and also minimize human expense or labor. [6:28] Dr. Ketchem co-authored a paper in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology about an AI chatbot and EoE. He had been inspired by a cardiology paper on whether ChatGPT would create accurate, appropriate answers about cardiology disease health. [7:19] Dr. Ketchem wondered if ChatGPT could be applied to EoE education. He discussed it with Dr. Dellon and Dr. Krystle Lynch, Dr. Ketchem's mentor at the University of Pennsylvania, and with Dr. Joy Chang, at the University of Michigan. They came up with a study design. [8:06] The study asked ChatGPT questions about EoE, focusing on patient education and the therapeutics, and seeing if it gave accurate responses or not. [8:45] The four doctors developed 40 questions that they gave ChatGPT as prompts and evaluated the responses. They proposed the questions in two ways: each question in an individual chat and 40 questions in a single chat. [9:41] Analyzing the responses, the study demonstrated that ChatGPT responded with multiple inaccuracies to questions about EoE on general topics, complications, and management. Over half of the responses mixed correct and incorrect information. [10:09] To evaluate the readability of the responses, the doctors used the Flesch-Kincaid reading ease tool. To understand the output from ChatGPT one would need high school and two years of college. That poses a potential health literacy barrier. [11:40] The questions ranged from general: “What is eosinophilic esophagitis?”, to complications: “What is a food impaction?”, “What is a stricture?”, to therapeutics: “What are steroids for eosinophilic esophagitis?”, “Can I use a proton pump inhibitor for EoE?” [12:15] It was not clear where ChatGPT pulled data from to respond to the questions. The data it was trained on was known to be in texts over a year old. Newer data may not have been accessible to ChatGPT. [13:29] The doctors asked about things that were common knowledge in the eosinophilic GI realm, like dupilumab, and ChatGPT didn't know much about it because it was a newer treatment option for EoE at the time of the study. [13:42] The doctors scored the answers on their scientific accuracy and patient educational value. Simple questions got good responses. For questions about therapies and complications, “it wasn't doing well.” They identified limitations to the study. [14:14] The doctors asked ChatGPT if EoE is associated with cancer. From their best epidemiologic knowledge, the doctors don't think that it is. ChatGPT falsely associated EoE with esophageal adenocarcinoma. [14:34] ChatGPT also associated EoE with Barrett's esophagus. To the doctors' best epidemiologic data, they are not sure that there's a connection. [15:02] When the doctors asked the questions in individual chats, they asked ChatGPT for medical literature references for the information. It didn't provide accurate references. Titles and authors were often incorrect and links often didn't work. [15:36] The incorrect references were a signal that ChatGPT wasn't ready to answer complex medical questions. In the more updated versions of ChatGPT, instead of giving references, it says you should consult your doctor, which is the right thing to do. [15:56] The researchers concluded that implementing this technology requires clinical oversight; it's a tool that should be used with caution for patients in educating themselves and also from the perspective of a physician who is not an expert in EoE. [16:29] Dr. Ketchem had been surprised by how long the responses were. He was expecting paragraphs but got pages and pages. He was also surprised by how quickly people were starting to use ChatGPT in other aspects of gastroenterology. [16:57] While Dr. Ketchem and his team were writing the paper, another study came out about gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) that was somewhat similar to what Dr. Ketchem proposed for EoE. There is rapidly much being published about ChatGPT. [17:14] Although the results were imperfect, there is potential applicability in patient-facing chats in the future for patient education but not yet there “for prime time.” [18:33] These chats need to be transparent about where they're getting data, especially in the medical field. [18:41] There will always be a role for people in medicine. You can't replace a face-to-face connection with a nurse or a physician with a chat bot. [19:11] Dr. Ketchem says everyone needs to be careful about using AI tools. He advises patients to always discuss any medical questions with their physician. AI tools are not yet able to provide accurate medical information all the time. [19:50] Ryan reminds listeners that this podcast is for educational purposes. Always consult your physician before making any changes to your healthcare. If you ask ChatGPT, also consult with your doctor before making any changes to your healthcare. [20:31] One of the problems with large language models is the potential for inaccuracy. Dr. Ketchem's gold standard is the medical literature and you don't know where the large language models are getting their information. [21:04] Future benefits may include helping patients get answers quicker and becoming more educated. Dr. Ketchem hopes we will get to a point where we can trust these technologies and implement them safely. [21:37] Government organizations like the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) are bringing together experts to think about large language models and create regulatory frameworks for their use in healthcare. Dr. Ketchem tells how HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) rules are followed to protect patients. [23:29] Dr. Ketchem sees potential in machine learning to predict which therapies an EoE patient will respond to. AI is also used in colonoscopies to identify hard-to-see polyps. It might be useful in endoscopies to see changes in the esophagus from EoE. [24:35] AI image recognition could also be applied in pathology. Dr. Ketchem is interested in trying to apply it to work he wants to do in the long term. People are working with pathology specimens to automate the counting of eosinophils. Dr. Ketchem discusses the potential use of AI for epidemiology in pathology. [25:43] Dr. Ketchem and Holly discuss the potential for using AI chatbots in medical screening questionnaires. There will always need to be a human element. [27:57] Dr Ketchem speaks to the potential future development of educational videos prepared by AI. It is a complex scenario that would require a lot of training. If a camera is added, AI could analyze where patients are having problems in taking medications. [29:55] Dr. Ketchem says there are many moving parts in healthcare and many stakeholders, making it difficult to implement AI. It could be used in many aspects, but its use must be safe. Dr. Ketchem thinks it will soon be useful in medical imaging. [30:57] In the next decade, AI may be used in drug discovery, clinical decision-making, and healthcare administrative operations. The goal is to improve the care for the patient. Personalized care would be an aspirational goal of using artificial intelligence. [31:29] Dr. Ketchem heard of a computer scientist at a government meeting suggesting a far-future scenario of doctors having digital versions of patients to test the patient's reaction to a specific medication, based on comorbidities and other medications in use. [32:30] Holly thanks Dr. Ketchem for sharing his research findings to help others. [32:40] Dr. Ketchem's last words: “The future is bright. There are many open avenues to apply these technologies to eosinophilic GI diseases – in diagnostic support, personalizing treatment, and predictive modeling – to make patient care better.” [33:10] Dr Ketchem is building a research program to use epidemiologic training with artificial intelligence. He hopes to find how to take text from histology or pathology and apply epidemiologic methods, to build a cohort of patients to study diseases faster. [34:03] Dr. Ketchem hopes to use AI to help predict patient outcomes, regarding who will respond to what therapy and who will have more complications from their disease; those are things he is interested in. There are so many unanswered questions. [34:30] After Dr. Ketchem finishes his fellowship, he hopes to be an independent investigator, being curious and answering these questions somewhere. If you know of such a job, please let Dr. Ketchem know! [34:53] To learn more about Dr. Ketchem's research, please check out the links in the show notes. LEXINGTON, Ky. (January 4, 2024) – [THIS IS AN ENCORE EPISODE.] The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) is a pivotal federal law enacted in 1990 that addresses the repatriation and disposition of Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects and cultural patrimony. With the understanding of the pain caused by historical practices, UK remains dedicated to working closely with Native nations, aiming to ethically repatriate these items. The size of the NAGPRA collections requires extensive expertise, staffing and resources, and is an ongoing collaborative process involving thorough consultations with Tribal stakeholders. Dr. Celise Chilcote-Fricker, a distinguished bioarchaeologist and assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, is the NAGPRA coordinator at the William S. Webb Museum of Anthropology at UK. In the five years she has been at UK, she has spearheaded various initiatives, including policy implementation, research moratorium, establishing an osteoarchaeology lab and developing digital databases shared with Native nations. Dr. Chilcote-Fricker is steadfast in leading this work with transparency, respect and meaningful consultations with Tribal representatives. In early 2023, the university pledged nearly $900,000 over the next three years to accelerate the NAGPRA efforts. This substantial investment, a collaboration between the College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of the Provost and led by Dean Ana Franco-Watkins, aims to expand personnel and resources, doubling the team dedicated to NAGPRA efforts. Under Dr. Chilcote-Fricker's leadership, and with reinvigorated support from the university, UK has made commendable progress in ensuring that these cultural artifacts find their way back to their rightful homes. Through their efforts, UK has culturally affiliated and repatriated 721 ancestors and 5,186 associated funerary objects from 39 different sites, which represents about 15% of the university's NAGPRA-related archaeological holdings. “We're moving at a snail's pace compared to what's available out there. These kids are going to change the world if we let them. Or, they won't because we stopped them.” “I think that the biggest issue in science it's our inability to share our stories.” Serena has dedicated her life to advancing science and science education while working with the nation's most promising youth. Dr. Serena McCalla was raised in New York City and fell in love with science as an elementary school student. She earned her bachelor's degree, as a double major, in Biological Science and African American & African Studies from the State University of New York at Binghamton University with intentions to become an ER physician. However, she quickly realized she was more inspired by research than medicine. To satisfy her craving for deeper scientific understandings, Dr. Serena McCalla earned an MS degree in Hematology/Microbiology, a Ph.D. that explored the use of diagnostic tests to improve the comprehension of genetics, photosynthesis, and respiration in secondary and collegiate Courses. Dr. McCalla's teaching experience began shortly after earning her bachelor's degree. In the classroom, her appreciation for the sciences became more profound as the students exposed her to nuances of various scientific disciplines including material science, nanotechnology, computer science, computational biology, and physics. Using her growing knowledge of science fields outside of her degrees, Dr. McCalla founded the iResearch Corporation while working as the Science Research Coordinator for Jericho UFSD, Jericho, NY. The iResearch Corporation is the parent company of iResearch Foundation, iResearch Institute, iResearch Academy, and iResearch Science. These companies help Dr. McCalla share her research practices with educators and students from around the globe. The iResearch Foundation supports underrepresented and underprivileged students' participation in the iResearch Institute and iResearch Academy. These programs promote science research method training and review of fundamental and advanced sciences by conducting laboratory experimentation and data science/bioinformatics data analysis and research to test novel hypotheses. Additionally, the iResearch Institute and iResearch Academy review the scientific method and research method practices through its international programs. The scientific training of these students encourages them to a) systematically address the use of the scientific method during the completion of projects, b) complete novel experimentation, and c) promote expertise in presenting and writing journal-worthy papers. Secondarily, Dr. McCalla is the Science Research Coordinator for Jericho Union Free School District (UFSD) and designed her curriculum to foster excellence in scientific research. The Jericho UFSD program has become one of the preeminent science research programs in the United States. Under Dr. McCalla's tutelage, the school district is lauded annually for its exemplary performance in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and Regeneron (formally Intel) Science Talent Search (STS) competitions producing over 80 scholars and 15 National finalists. The iResearch Corporation parallels the environment Dr. McCalla built at Jericho High School and UFSD, the culture of her classroom and lab brings forth copious avenues to help students excel in science, math, bioinformatics, data science, and engineering research. She enjoys that each day provides a new opportunity to encourage students to explore and impact the future of science and society. A natural competitor, Dr. Serena McCalla is not only a science research enthusiast and professional; she also considers herself a science geek and competition supporter. She is the President of the New York State Science and Engineering Fair (NYSSEF; 2014 - present) because she believes in promoting students' academic excellence and encouraging accompanied recognition in science. Her most pivotal goal is to foster student learning and research to extend past successes in their universities and ultimately manifest themselves in the global arena. Dr. McCalla believes these works will propel this generation of students to improve life on this planet as we know it. Dr. McCalla has earned numerous awards for teaching and mentoring. Awards she has received include the U.S. Presidential Scholar Program Teacher Recognition Award (2023, 2017, & 2010), the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Harvard Club of Long Island (2016 & 2012), the Teacher of Merit Award earned annually from Regeneron/Intel Science Talent Search (2023 - 2010), received an honorary minor planet (named Serena McCalla) from MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force funded Outstanding Teacher Award in association with the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). Dr. McCalla's students have won virtually all STEM competitions that are publicly accessible regionally, nationally, and internationally. To conclude, Dr. McCalla had the unique experience of participating as a principal subject in the National Geographic documentary Science Fair. The immensely likable film chronicles the importance of science fairs in the high school learning experience. The documentary highlights the trials, tribulations, and successes of the Jericho High School students in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The documentary was selected for and premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and was honored by winning the festival's first-ever overall Festival Favorite Award. The documentary also earned additional awards, including an Academy Emmy Award. Dr. McCalla is again a principal character in the upcoming National Geographic TV/Disney+ docuseries released on December 10, 2023, called Science Fair: the Series. Dr. McCalla has also participated in speaking engagements, commercials, and panels for Disney+, National Geographic, and XSTEM. She is also a newly named National Geographic Explorer, receiving the Wayfinder Award in 2023. The Wayfinder Grant supported the design of a new science research competition entitled “The Lost Einsteins”. Dr. McCalla hopes to continue to bolster the brilliance and determination of future scientists. In addition, she encourages her students to follow her quote- “if you dream it, complete the work to make your dream reality”. McCalla aspires to support all students to make a difference by discovering something new within themselves and the world. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Find your passion. Share your story. LEXINGTON, Ky. (November 30, 2023) – The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) is a pivotal federal law enacted in 1990 that addresses the repatriation and disposition of Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects and cultural patrimony. In a world where health and well-being are paramount, the Health Science podcast presents an illuminating episode featuring Dr. Frank Sabatino in conversation with Dr. Greg Fitzgerald. This thought-provoking discussion takes a deep dive into the transformative power of natural hygiene and its profound impact on overall health and wellness. Dr. Fitzgerald's journey towards natural health began when he noticed a concerning decline in the fitness and health levels of his high school students. Motivated by a desire to make a difference, he immersed himself in the study of various health practices, leading him to redirect his career path towards natural health and wellness. During his naturopathy studies, Dr. Fitzgerald had the extraordinary privilege of encountering a true luminary in the field, Dr. Alec Burton, a founding member and past president of the International Association of Hygienic Physicians, Inc., USA. Under Dr. Burton's guidance, he gained invaluable knowledge and wisdom, which deepened his understanding of holistic well-being. This mentorship inspired Dr. Fitzgerald to pursue degrees in chiropractic and osteopathy, shaping his approach to healthcare and further fueling his passion for natural hygiene. At the core of natural hygiene lies the belief that true health is achieved through healthful living. Dr. Fitzgerald explains that the human body is innately designed for optimal health, with sickness and disease arising from factors that disrupt this natural balance. Natural hygiene encompasses the study of life, health, biology, and physiology, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these aspects and their profound influence on overall well-being. What sets natural hygiene apart is its holistic perspective on health and wellness. Dr. Fitzgerald emphasizes that vibrant health and vitality are achieved through the harmonious integration of all elements of natural hygiene. Rather than focusing on a single aspect in isolation, a balanced approach that incorporates appropriate nutrition, regular exercise, sufficient rest and sleep, and nourishing exposure to sunlight taps into the body's innate capacity for healing and rejuvenation. One of the significant paradigm shifts that Dr. Fitzgerald challenges is the prevailing misconception surrounding cure and care. In conventional medicine, symptoms are often viewed as adversaries to be eradicated, leading to a focus on symptom suppression. However, natural hygiene offers a refreshing perspective, considering symptoms as intelligent responses that signal the body's natural healing processes. It underscores the importance of caring for the individual, providing the necessary conditions and support for the body to restore its normal state of health. Dr. Fitzgerald acknowledges that embracing natural hygiene and shifting paradigms can be challenging in a society entrenched in traditional medical approaches. However, he reminds us of the transformative power that lies within this holistic framework. By honoring the body's innate wisdom, providing the necessary conditions for healing, and embracing a holistic approach to health and wellness, individuals can embark on a journey toward vibrant health and well-being. The conversation between Dr. Frank Sabatino and Dr. Greg Fitzgerald serves as a catalyst for reevaluating our understanding of health and the role we play in our own well-being. It invites us to tap into the timeless principles of natural hygiene and unlock our full potential for vibrant health. Snow appeared in the Western District Court in Charlottesville Friday to answer to charges that stemmed from a federal investigation, along with his son who pleaded guilty to a charge of heroin distribution. The elder Snow was caught trying to harass and intimidate a confidential informant involved with the investigation.“Elected officials should hold themselves to a higher standard and serve their community responsibly,” said Stanley M. Meador, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Richmond Division in a release sent out by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia. “Mr. Snow violated the faith entrusted to him, and with his son criminally used personal information of community members for their own gain,” Snow was first elected to the position in 1987 and was reelected in 2019 while under indictment with three quarters of the vote. In November 2017, Bryant Snow was arrested on two state counts of distribution after selling methamphetamine and heroin to an informant. He plead guilty to the meth charge in April 2018 and was imprisoned at Central Virginia Regional Jail. While there, the father and son discussed ways to intimidate someone referred to as Person A. At one point, the elder Snow sent out over 12,000 pamphlets to Greene County residents describing how the Sheriff’s Department uses informants in an attempt to dissuade Person A. Larry Snow will be sentenced on July 25 and Bryant Snow will be sentenced on August 1 before Senior Judge Norman K. Moon. Bonds stepping down as director of the Blue Ridge Health DistrictA search will soon get underway for a new director of the Blue Ridge Health District now that Dr. Denise Bonds has announced she’ll step down from the position at the end of this month. She’s been the health director since 2015 and led the agency during the COVID-19 pandemic and during a name change. “Under Dr. Bonds’ leadership, BRHD expanded its HIV testing and prevention services, increased access to testing for sexually transmitted diseases, and broadened the size and reach of the Population Health Division, including launching a robust Community Health Worker program,” reads an announcement from the Blue Ridge Health District sent out yesterday afternoon. Dr. Bonds also served as interim director of the Rappahannock Area Health District from August 2020 to April 2021. The Blue Ridge Health District is also closing down its COVID-19 case investigation team. According to the release, they followed 47,274 cases since March 2020. After this weekend, the Mobile Health Unit created during the pandemic has held 200 events at which over 5,000 COVID vaccinations were administered. A memorial to those lost during the COVID-19 pandemic will be held on May 24, 2022 at the Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital Amphitheater.COVID-19 update A spring surge of COVID-19 continues to rise with the Virginia Department of Health reporting 2,677 new cases on Friday, with a seven-day average for positive tests at 11 percent. That’s about where things were in late February when the Omicron surge was waning. “And that’s up from around three percent, three and a half percent in March, so we have seen an increase in test positivity,” said Dr. Costi Sifri, the director of hospital epidemiology at the University of Virginia Health System. “This is occurring in a background where we’re having less testing in general because of the growth of at-home testing and I would say the vast majority of the people who are testing positive at home through a rapid antigen test are not going on to get a PCR test somewhere else.” The dashboard for the Blue Ridge Health District hasn’t been updated since May 1, and the Virginia Department of Health no longer provides that information in an easily-consumable fashion. The dataset is available here. The increasing number of cases are not leading to increased hospitalizations. Today the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association reports 30 COVID-positive people in intensive care units and 11 on respirators. At the height of the Omicron surge in late January of this year, that number climbed over 400. Dr. Sifri said the numbers are expected to rise as more people forgo wearing masks indoors and as people move further away from their vaccinations or boosters. “There is some progressive loss of some immune response,” said Dr. Sifri. “And finally, in this background is new subvariants of Omicron.” Dr. Sifri points people to the weekly models produced by the University of Virginia's Biocomplexity Institute. The latest from April 29 predicts a further surge this summer, though with lower death rates due to treatments that are now available, more than two years after the pandemic began. “The open question is how much of an impact will that have on health systems?” Dr. Sifri asked. “Is that going to lead to more hospitalizations? Is that going to lead to more [intensive care unit] hospitalizations and deaths? That’s our concern.”Dr. Sifri said vaccinations may not prevent infection but do limit the severity. City taking donations to cover unpaid utility billsIt’s been nearly a month since the City of Charlottesville announced it would resume the practice of shutting down service for unpaid utility bills. There was a statewide moratorium on such disconnects that expired last September. In all, the city used $557,000 in various federal assistance programs to help some customers. However, they announced in April disconnects would resume. “To date, six accounts have been disconnected and remain out of service,” said Chris Cullinan, the city’s finance director, in an email to Charlottesville Community Engagement. However, the city is taking donations to help prevent further disconnects. Cullinan said that as of Thursday, the city had received $800 from concerned community members. He said checks marked with “Water/WW Assistance” in the memo can be sent to:City of Charlottesville Utility Billing OfficePO Box 911Attn: Water and Wastewater AssistanceCharlottesville, VA 22902Second shout-out goes to a Charlottesville Jazz Society event this weekendIn today’s second subscriber-supported shout-out, the Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU are pleased to bring bassist Joe Fonda back to town with his long-standing group the Nu Band. On Friday, Kellen Squire released a video to launch a campaign for which he filed earlier this spring. He’s an emergency room nurse who ran in the 58th District in 2017 against incumbent Rob Bell. “Just as I believe there’s hope for me when I come home to my family,” Squire narrates in the two-minute video that depicts him driving home from a shift, concluding with him getting out of his vehicle. “I’m Kellen Squire and I’m running for the House of Delegates because as an emergency department nurse, I know that we all do better when we all do better,” Squire continues. “I’ll fight unapologetically for rural Virginia. I’ll put people before party. And I’ll make sure no Virginian gets left behind.” Squire joins Albemarle Supervisor Donna Price in the race for the Democratic nomination, a race in which the winner could take on Republican Rob Bell, who has represented the 58th District since 2002. He’s not yet made an announcement about the next election. The 55th District is geographically different and will consist of most of Albemarle County, western Louisa County, and northeast Nelson County. Price made her announcement on Facebook on Tuesday, a day after someone leaked a draft Supreme Court ruling purporting to overturn Roe v. Wade. (read the story)There is a chance that an election could be held this year due to a federal lawsuit filed by Richmond attorney Paul Goldman arguing that legislators elected in 2021 are in unconstitutional districts. Judge David Novak of the Eastern District of Virginia is expected to rule on whether Goldman has the legal standing to file the case.On Thursday, Novak admonished Goldman for filing a motion to ask the court to consider the draft ruling as evidence for why a House of Delegates race should be run this year. “The Court hereby STRIKES this Motion at patently inappropriate and completely irrelevant to this case,” Novak wrote in an order. “Neither draft opinions nor press reports have any impact on the decisions of this Court.” Novak told Goldman to stop filing additional motions. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The Quadra Singers released a video of the world premiere performance of Dr. John Hooper's composition Corona Chorus, which they sang at the Quadra Community Centre on December 10th and 11th, 2021. Hooper is a former Professor and Director of the School of Music at Concordia University of Edmonton, an examiner for the London School of Music and the Music Director of Island Voices. At the time of the Quadra performance, he was also the interim conductor for the Quadra Singers. In the press release accompanying the audio that follows, choir president Joan Varley, said,“Singing together is a decades-long tradition in our small island community, and it was very hard to let that go in the spring of 2020 because of the pandemic. After two sessions online, we worked hard, following provincial guidance, to provide a safe environment to sing together again. Under Dr. Hooper's leadership, this piece, it's musical style and lyrics, really captures the mix of feelings and challenges that we're facing during the pandemic. And the bonus was that he turned a really tough subject into something that shares the important public health message in a new way.” This was the Quadra Singers 2021 Christmas concert and they followed strict safety protocols. The participants were fully vaccinated, kept two metres apart and washed their hands when entering the performance area. Prior to the pandemic, there would have been 140 to 150 people in the audience. Due to COVID restrictions, the performance had to be scheduled over two nights to meet this capacity. Dr Hooper introduced his composition by saying, “ I've written a piece attempting to communicate some aspects of our lived experience for music to communicate our reactions, our rules, our new realities, our frustrations, our life changes. And even some of our sadness over sickness and death. You'll hear many words that have become all too familiar to you. Yeah, I hope you'll also hear some optimism as we come out of this together, as well as some friendly finger-wagging and reminders along the way. I hope Corona chorus will make Dr. Henry proud.”

Research shows that the LGBTQ+ community is almost three times more likely than others to experience a mental health condition such as major depression or generalized anxiety disorder. And, LGBTQ+ youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide, experience suicidal thoughts or engage in self-harm than heterosexual and cis-gendered people. This is not due to their sexual orientation or gender identity but oftentimes from outside factors such as a non-affirming home environment, a volatile political climate, and the lack of freedom and space to be true to who they are. Today, in honor and celebration of June being Pride Month, we're talking to Dr. Amy Green, the Vice President of Research at The Trevor Project (an organization providing crisis intervention and prevention services to LGBTQ+ youth) to talk about how LGBTQ+ youth are disproportionately impacted by things suicide and other mental health challenges and how we, as allies and supporters, can help change those numbers. And in the second half of the episode, host Chad Moses sits down with Jessica Strait, a frequent author on the TWLOHA blog, to hear about her lived experience as a queer woman who grew up in a religious family, has dealt with multiple mental health challenges, and is in the midst of an ongoing journey toward self-acceptance. Dr. Amy Green and her team support the organization's work by using data and research findings to advance its crisis services and peer support programs, as well as advocacy and education initiatives. Under Dr. Green's leadership, the research team produces innovative research that brings new clinical implications to the field of suicidology and LGBTQ mental health. Amy lives in Los Angeles with her wife, who is also a clinical psychologist working in suicide prevention, and their two dogs. Jess Strait is a long-time TWLOHA supporter and a frequent author on our blog. She is a queer woman who currently resides in Wilmington, North Carolina with her partner of 16 years and their three kids. It wasn't until 2014, that Jess and her now-wife shared their relationship publicly and got married the year after same-sex marriage became legal in the US. A former healthcare worker, Jess has dealt with a myriad of mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse. — “End-of-life experiences are proof of humanity's built-in, natural, and profoundly spiritual capacity for self-sustenance and self-healing, grace and hope.” Valeria Teles interviews Dr. Christopher Kerr — the author of “Death Is But a Dream: Finding Hope and Meaning in End of Life Dreams.” Christopher Kerr is the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Executive Officer for The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care in Buffalo, New York. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Chris earned his MD as well as a PhD in Neurobiology. Outside of direct patient care, Chris' focus is in the area of patient advocacy. Dr. Kerr's background in research has evolved from bench science towards the human experience of illness as witnessed from the bedside, specifically patient's dreams and visions at the end of life. Although medically ignored, these near-universal experiences often provide comfort and meaning, as well as insight into the life led and the death anticipated. To date, the research team at Hospice Buffalo has published multiple studies on this topic and documented over 1,500 end-of-life events, many of which are videotaped. This work was the subject of his TEDx Buffalo Talk which has been viewed over 3.3 million times. A tree branch hit his head inflicting post-concussion syndrome and sinus infection—eventually ruptured his eardrums after four weeks. He called his family doctor to diagnose his condition and was given a 10-day levofloxacin prescription. He was doing well until he experienced suffering worse than his concussion. He did the responsible thing to go to his family doctor's office where he was diagnosed as bipolar—he was gaslighted.Gaslighting is a psychological term where medical professional downplay your symptoms. Tom was not crazy but he was treated as such by the medical personnel. After an arduous defense about his personality for months, he concluded to not talk about any mental health issues with the medical community—he will be regarded as crazy if he does and it will be a glaring mark to his medical history.Tom went to a doctor from a major university where she was able to alleviate some of his woes. He commended her job but it only went so far. He felt violated talking about her cognitive issues until he was able to find Dr. Hugh—now feeling a lot better.Consequences[07:38]Tom decided to have the power of attorney after he was diagnosed as bipolar. He felt defeated and he could not think clear.[08:16]Her wife was overtaxed with work and his condition. It was a stressful situation for both of them, emotionally and mentally. Tom ended up creating a poem—while laying in a dark room.Lifestyle[09:52]Tom's condition affected his business and personal life. As the months went by, Tom channeled a positive outlook where he made the decision to work towards a healthy lifestyle.[12:42]Having a huge plot of land, he went to hike and travel to numerous states. With the help of his friends, he became more productive and active daily.Stability[17:58]Tom cancelled his appointment to a psychologist—he was doing better. He refrained from a psychologist because he does not want to be given another drug that would potentially make things worse. He was already happy and recovering with the assistance of a functional medicine doctor like Dr. Hugh.[20:25]With things moving at the right direction, Tom needs more time and he would be better than before the incident.Spreading the Word[23:49]Tom advices to keep things going. Keep trying and don't stop. Even though it was an uphill battle, Tom was glad that he did not stop. Set your goal and fulfill it!

Phillip D. Zamore Bio: Phillip D. Zamore, Ph.D. has been an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 2008. In 2016, he became the Chair of the RNA Therapeutics Institute, which was established at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2009. Dr. Zamore also is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, the department he joined in 1999, and he became the Gretchen Stone Cook Professor of Biomedical Sciences in 2005. Dr. Zamore received his A.B. (1986) and Ph.D. (1992) degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Harvard University. He then pursued postdoctoral studies on the role of the RNA binding proteins in Drosophila development at The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Zamore's laboratory studies small RNA silencing pathways in eukaryotes and prokaryotes, including RNA interference (RNAi), microRNA, and PIWI-interacting RNA pathways. Dr. Zamore and his collaborators seek to use these insights to design therapies for human diseases, including Huntington's disease. Under Dr. Zamore's mentorship, the Zamore Lab has produced dozens of researchers working at top institutions both in the United States and abroad. In 2015, Dr. Zamore was awarded the Chancellor's Medal for Excellence in Scholarship at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. To date, Dr. Zamore has more than 150 publications and has been among the most highly cited researchers for more than a decade. He serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals and is in demand as a presenter at conferences and institutions worldwide. Dr. Zamore holds more than 20 patents, with other applications pending; he was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2014. In 2002, Dr. Zamore co-founded Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (Cambridge, MA), a publicly traded biotech company which now has more than 1000 employees and multiple drugs in clinical trials. Alnylam's first drug, ONPATTRO, a first-of-its-kind RNAi therapeutic, for the treatment of the polyneuropathy of hereditary transthyretin-mediated (hATTR) amyloidosis in adults, was approved by the FDA in 2018. In 2014, he co-founded Voyager Therapeutics in Cambridge, MA. Chair and Professor at University of Massachusetts Medical School, Phillip Zamore, joins the show to discuss a new method of gene silencing called RNA interference (RNAi). Tune in to learn the following: How the RNAi system is analogous to the basis of vaccination How specifically the method of RNAi prevents a protein from being made and what happens to the mRNA after it has been cut Why RNAi will never replace the knock-out method, and the benefit of combining both methods Zamore states that the world's diseases can be divided into two broad categories: those with mutations in the genome that can be addressed by turning off the gene forever, and those with mutations in the genome that can be addressed by lowering the amount of a gene product, as opposed to turning off the gene completely. The gene knock-out method is used for the first kind of disease, and the effects of the knock-out are irreversible. This makes the method a good tool for studying model organisms in the lab, but rather risky as a therapeutic intervention for humans. This is where a new method called RNA interference comes into play and holds promise for the future of medicine and the treatment of diseases. RNA interference is a way of destroying messenger RNA (mRNA) in order to prevent the creation of a protein. Unlike other methods, RNA interference uses a natural cellular pathway, which makes it more effective than other mechanisms in turning off disease genes. And just like taking a drug, stopping this process means stopping any unwanted side effects, which means it's a lot safer and less risky than the knock-out method. There are currently two RNAi drugs on the market, both of which direct small RNA (sRNA) to the liver where the protein in question is made. By way of preventing the creation of that protein, the disease gene is turned down (almost off). Zamore explains why the liver is particularly amenable to these drugs, and the ongoing research and development taking place for drugs that target proteins made in other areas of the body. He also discusses the near-term goal of bringing to market an sRNA drug that blocks the production of a protein in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. This drug would function as a replacement for statins, and comes with fewer side effects and would only need to be taken by a patient twice per year. Zamore brings an impressive amount of insight and information to the show, discussing a number of topics in depth but with enough clarity to follow along with ease.
